Happy New Year!
Image archives
Hi, you seem to be a knowledgeable person about Wiki stuff that relates to Vietnam. Do you know any good online archives that house high resolution public domain images of Vietnamese history and culture? Looking for 2MB minimum, ideally 10-20MB or more in uncompressed .tif format. Thinking of potential material for featured picture candidacy, would be glad to restore if the technical specs are up to par. Best wishes, DurovaCharge! 06:05, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Renaming
I have to "copy paste" because the article with the new name has already existed and redirected to the old one. Please show me how to delete the page then i'll move the article to it.
I think the article is still at its early age. So, be flexible to what we do. Mr Vinx (talk) 10:49, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
Sockpuppet is attempting to have the Joseph Cao picture removed
Apparently, there is a sockpuppet that goes by the various names of Admitaside342 on Wikimedia Commons and Showwould40q on Wikipedia. In both places, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, Admitaside342 and his sockpuppet Showwould40q is arguing that there is an undefined copyright violation. Showwould40q attempted to begin a 3RR fight that I refused to participate in--even though he had already wrote me for the 3RR after merely placing the picture back in the article ONE. Both Admitaside342 and Showwould40q have ONLY edited three things in both of their entire editing careers with Wiki--Joseph Cao and Joseph Cao's picture. They both started their wiki careers in the last couple of days and they both seem to know how to complain to the Admin Notice Board and to have pictures taken down--specifically the Joseph Cao portrait that was specifically released by the Congressman's office. A Wikipedia admin has stated that he believes Showwould40q is a sockpuppet. I quote, "S's edit history is suspiciously short, presumably someone's sock." William M. Connolley (talk) 19:47, 2 February 2009 (UTC)No Violation Decision. As to the substance of the claim, the picture has been specifically released by the Congressman's office. There is paperwork on file with the Wikipedia Foundation to refute the sockpuppet's claim. I just wish that the sockpuppet would come forward and explain who he is.--InaMaka (talk) 02:22, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
- You claimed that you have permission from Cao's office for the image that you uploaded. You should provide proof of that to prevent it being considered a copyright violation. DHN (talk) 02:41, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
- As I stated above I have an e-mail directly from Congressman Cao's office. When I posted the picture I forwarded a copy of the e-mail directly to the Wikipedia Foundation, as the posting instructions indicate. I still have that e-mail and the Wikipedia Foundation's response to my e-mail. How can I provide you with a copy of these various e-mails? And let me repeat that Showwould40q and Admitaside342 are sockpuppets of each other.--InaMaka (talk) 02:47, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Vietnam photos
I noticed that the original image on the Viet Wiki has been deleted, and I shamefully can't really read that much Vietnamese to be of much help. It looks like it was deleted on request of a non-member or something, and as the person who uploaded it to this side, and knowing more Vietnamese, maybe you're able to figure it out?
Also, somewhat unrelated, I was thinking of snapping some useful shots of the local Tet Festival tonight at Inala but ended up having camera problems. The usefulness of the camera's pretty dubious, since it's a bit old, but I'd take suggestions of something that may be considered useful, so I can try getting it tomorrow evening. I don't really know much about Tet and what's usually there, besides food, fireworks and lions, so I'd appreciate anything. - Zero1328 Talk? 14:11, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- I couldn't find that image on Commons, actually. Maybe I didn't put in the right word or something? I never actually of Tet Festivals that way; I thought it was a regular thing, since I grew up going to them every year. I should probably consult my mum on that.
- I was only really thinking of generic things that could be found in a Tet Festival anywhere, instead of more unique things. Thanks for the suggestions; I'll try to keep an eye open for clear shots of the bamboo pole, and the various displays of the flag. There are already good pictures of those three foods, but I can probably get shots of something like nem nuong, bo la lot, nuoc mia and the juicing machine for it. - Zero1328 Talk? 22:37, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- Well, if it's really in the public domain like you say it is, it's probably just better off at Commons and having it copied from there, instead. And I've never seen a reconstructed Vietnamese village before! That sounds really weird for me. There's a large Vietnamese/Chinese community here and I've honestly thought Tet Festivals were a regular occurrence, instead of being something to introduce our culture. I don't really see anything done here in that regard. Anyway, if I do end up taking shots I'll be sure to let you know, since you can contribute to the Viet Wiki too. - Zero1328 Talk? 23:22, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Well, I just came home and reviewed my photos, and realised that I actually did fairly terrible. It was only on a whim but I ended up trying to prep for the second day, but I still had camera problems. I ended up taking photos at 1024x768 and my (quality) batteries kept dying after 10-15 shots, without flash or the active display. I also forgot about personality rights and forgot to make it very clear that I intended to publish the photos. Except for maybe the battery problem, it's been an interesting experience, taking photos in this type of environment, so I'll probably try to learn more about my camera when I find the next interesting photo op. Out of the 102 photos, I think only 5 or so are usable, but I won't place them on Commons, since I could do better next year. Nonetheless, I'm still grateful for your tips. - Zero1328 Talk? 14:11, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Finally had a chance to do a lot of personal stuff, but only because I got ill and resting at home right now. Thanks for the suggestions again; I've been thinking that you might be doubting me or something, since I haven't shown anything, so I grabbed a sample and stuck it on megaupload: [1]
My hands have been shaky lately, for some reason, and most of these photos were taken from inside the car, whilst driving. We've mostly been going around the areas close to the house. I stuck them on megaupload instead of commons because I've only glanced at them so far and I want to be personally sure of the licensing and blurring of the sensitive things like faces, and I can probably only do that when this is all done. - Zero1328 Talk? 14:31, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
I forgot to describe each photo; here's a quick summary in order of the photo numbers:
- bamboo pole at Inala
- nem nuong at Inala, mum said that it's red food colouring in the nem mix, not like that in vietnam
- Entrance to Tet in INala, at night, the center banner in viet is actually all over the place in vietnam
- A performance in Inala Tet, too blurry
- This is taken over singapore
- Something at a quality vietnamese restaurant
- Interior of main saigon post office, has international help, money exchange, phones
- power lines, it's like this everywhere
- I think it's the emergency side to the hospital, I'll catch the name later
- roundabout in front of a shopping center, billboards in center
- one of many small streetpost signs
- balut with side dishes, I cracked one open and placed it on the tray, this needs cropping
- The ones with phone numbers are some sort of advertisement, I don't know what the center text says, I can't read it and didn't ask my mum
A quick file count says 244 photos in my camera so far, and I'll leave the settings as you see the vietnam photos as. I still need to further study my phone's abilities to take better photos. My sister also has a camera and I might use some of the ones she took, but I'd prefer to have her properly aware of the licensing available, which I also haven't properly studied. - Zero1328 Talk? 14:49, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
After you and YellowMonkey download it I'll probably delete it just in case, next time I'm free, or after a few days, since this isn't really ready for presentation. I have fruit in the fridge and some dried lychee thing, a bit like raisins, which i might take photos of if I grab a plate to properly present it. I've taken alot of street photos, since I've been trying to find a photo of the explicit danger involved, particularly one with a turning group overtaking someone going straight, or someone crossing a road. It's all from the car though, so there should be a slight window reflection, and right now I can't tak photos at night due to light blurs, I need to work that out. - Zero1328 Talk? 15:01, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
I think that was taken from the car, actually. I guess I'll try to take some new pics of it. But what do you think of the photo quality/usability? Those were the non blurry ones; I tried to take multiples for redundancy when I could, so generally, out of the several hundred photos I'll take, I guess half would be usable while a quarter would be informative enough for inclusion. - Zero1328 Talk? 02:44, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

These don't need to be at the end of the names do they? eg Guangdong Province, California State etc, except for Quan 1, Saigon etc. I asked this at WT:VIET. They're everywhere here. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:59, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Vietnamese wiki
Hi. Yes its doesn't happen all of the time as I've managed to retrieve some data from it but especially the last few days when I click the Vietnamese wiki link my whole Internet browser just freezes. It doesn't even work if I try to ctrl alt and delete, I have to end up rebooting my PC. What details would you like to know? Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:00, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I'm afraid I have no idea but the codes are. I['m using a Dell Dimension 3000 and I use Mozilla Firefox as far as I'm aware and am located in the Cardiff Wales area. The crash occurred on several different pages which I can't recall. Hope the problem diesn't persist as I want to get the communes of Vietnam up and running in the next few weeks. I could sure use some help though translating some articles in Category:Articles needing translation from Vietnamese Wikipedia. Hopefully I can obtain some reliable sources for population and area data on communes. I know it must exist as I've seen 2004 data on Vietnamese wiki (when I managed to get through) but can't find the government census details. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:04, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
I use XP. I've tried searching but nothing is showing up. I haven't a standard task bar as I've opted for this slim bar which maximises the extent of the page. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:16, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi DHN,
As far as I'm concerned, the image is already licensed under Creative Commons Attribute-Noncommercial-ShareAlike. I'm not really good at this Wikimedia Commons uploading procedure, so I'll look into uploading it into Wikimedia Commons when I have some time later in the week. yellowtailshark (talk) 09:23, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Banh it
Hi, can you tell which subtype of banh it this one is? It's not the "naked" kind and it wasn't wrapped in a ramie leaf (it was wrapped in what appeared to be a banana leaf, with a darker green leaf wrapping inside that was more like the bamboo leaf used to wrap Chinese zongzi. Badagnani (talk) 04:03, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, that was quick. I was just going by the label (they're often wrong). This search does pull up a lot of the bright green pyramid dumplings, which my photo was. Badagnani (talk) 04:08, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
What can you glean from this article? Badagnani (talk) 04:09, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
Regarding the photos you showed me, the one I had had a filling that was a very fine, soft-ish white paste made from sticky rice flour, filled with smashed mung beans, rather than whole sticky rice grains. Also, the inner leaf looked dark green and dull like the ones you showed me, but the outer leaf wrapping was very bright green, a banana leaf like in the above article's photo. Badagnani (talk) 04:11, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
It seems to be the same one I got here in Ohio. Perhaps makers in the U.S. are imitating the one you mention. There are other articles calling this bright green pyramid "banh it," such as this one. Badagnani (talk) 05:01, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
N & S
Can you find sources for:
- Southerners more entrepreneurial
- Southerners are shorter and darker (a stereotype some Northerners hold based on both climate differences and the idea that Southern Vietnamese, upon first settling in the southern regions, have mixed somewhat with the native Chams and Khmers)
I think there were a couple of other things that got lost in the shuffle as well.
Badagnani (talk) 23:09, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Com ruou
Hi, can you tell me if gạo rượu is another term for com ruou? I just found this term online referring to the Chinese jiuniang, which I just tasted for the first time yesterday and which appears to be almost exactly the same thing.[2] Badagnani (talk) 15:45, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Here's the search: [3]. Badagnani (talk) 18:34, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks very much; I've just created an article on Jiuniang, which is very similar to com ruou. Badagnani (talk) 18:47, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Misleading claim
I was going thorough an archives and came across an issue. I do not like how you handled it as feel your change did not address the issues I had raised and instead continued to introduce highly misleading claims in the article, that we not supported by the sources used. I have therefore modified the articles accordingly and further explained that here Talk:Cultural and political image of John McCain#Support for McCain vs support for him using the term 'gook'. Your comments are welcome. I understand given your background you may have your experience of the matter, but remember that we can only go by what the sources. The sources do not say that the majority of Vietnamese Americans were supportive of his use of the term gook, simply that they were generally supportive of McCain himself. This is quite a different thing and the two should not be conflated even if it is fine to mention both. As I've said, unless a poll was done on the specific issue, it seems unlikely anyone knows whether the majority of Vietnamese-Americans were supportive of his usage of the term. P.S. Just to be clear, I'm not saying that the majority of Vietnamese Americans were not supportive of McCain's usage of the term. I have no idea but would guess it's possible although would also guess a more subtle general opinion is possible e.g. are not necessarily offended by it but feel it would be best if he didn't use it even if they understand why he uses. Ultimately however, without reliable sources it's not something we should comment on (Nil Einne (talk) 21:30, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Lien Thanh
Has this fellow Major Lien Thanh, the former head of police in Hue come round to your area to speak about his new book "Bien Dong Mien Trung" about the Buddhist crisis in 1966, the Tet Offensive and Hue Massacre in 1968 and the 1972 communist offensive? I presume he went around the US before Australia. Apparently 1000+ people turned up in Melbourne. About 300 people here came out of maybe 12,000 Viets in the city, although only about 1% were under 45. He made some quite sensational claims about Thich Tri Quang etc [which violated BLP so I won't repeat it here], and all these people he claimed to be communists. The crowd, as far as I can tell, was more like an organised Diemist demonstration. Actually more like any Asian country where teh govt cadres tell the villagers to applaud at the end. There were a stack of people who all started clapping and cheering in a raucous way each time he bagged Thich Tri Quang, and their way of doing it didn't appear surprised as though they were taking new info, it seemed feigned. Most of them were well known Catholic activists lol. YellowMonkey (cricket photo poll!) paid editing=POV 03:47, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Re:Gratuitous use of Chinese in Vietnamese language
Actually, many Vietnamese-related articles are annotated with Chu Han in Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and other Wikipedias regardless of whether the same Chu Han annotations are used in Vietnam Wikipedia or not. Besides, for readers who from East Asian Cultural Sphere or who are familiar with Chu Han, it will be a good help for them to understand the original meaning of the certain terms if Chu Han annotations were used. Moreover, Chu Han is still used in some special cases in Vietnam, such as traditional ceremonies, history studies, traditional literature or Han Nom studies. By the way, I insist that people should not forget their own history and cultures.--서공·Tây Cống·セイコゥ? ★委ủy班ban復phục活hoạt漢hán喃nôm越việt南nam★ 13:54, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

The reason he did that, according to him, is that I reverted his warning more than 3 times. And I actually did that. At first, we talked about the reason and the way he locked a new user who just made an edit for the first time in the article Nhan Quyen tai Vietnam. I argued with him about the ligitimacy and the process by which he did that. (You can read our discussion on the page Tin nhan cho bao quan vien in the section called Ve viec cam thanh vien Modesldale-and don't forget to look at the history page.) While discussing, he used insulting words to me, resulting in my deleting his insulting words (i used <s></s>). That's the reason he issued the first warning. I didn't accept that. And I reverted it. To conclude, please look for the way Sysop Dung005 locked the new user, and the way he issued various warnings to me. I believe that all of what he did is illegitimate and shows signs of abusing the sysop tools. While waiting for the expiry of the locking, I will be active in English. I use a permanent IP address, so i have no way to give any feedback on my Vietnamese page. Thank you.--Trananh1980 (talk) 03:55, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
- I'm going to try to look through the relevant comments this weekend. DHN (talk) 05:20, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
- By now, I hope you have finished reading the discussions between me and user dung005. If you do not agree with me on something, just make it clear to me. I ll understand. Thanks--Trananh1980 (talk) 22:17, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, it's been a hectic week and I haven't had time to do anything. As soon as I find some free time I'll take a look. DHN (talk) 23:28, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
- No, I cannot edit any page on vi.wiki. Anyway, this is a good time for me to calm down and refresh my mind. If you have spare time, I will appreciate your help. But if you don't, that's fine. I m okay. --Trananh1980 (talk) 02:01, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for helping. However, don't you think user Dung005 has to take responsibility for issuing illigitimate warnings? How would you deal with that? He thought I could not delete his discussion for his rudeness?--Trananh1980 (talk) 02:38, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I checked the wikipedia and there is nothing preventing you to delete comments on your talk page. ~~EBE123~~ talkContribs 20:32, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- According to Wikipedia:User pages#Removal of comments, notices, and warnings, users can't delete warnings issued by system operators. The reason I did that is because I believe the warning i received was illegitimate. I should have talked to other sysops, which I did not.--Trananh1980 (talk) 22:12, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

--Trananh1980 (talk) 05:17, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Help with source in Vietnamese?
Hi! I've been helping with the FAC for S&M (song) and found a source about what countries the song was banned in, but it's in Vietnamese... I did Google Translate, but just wanted to confirm that the machine translation was accurate. Based on the source would it be fair to say the following? "The video was banned in eleven countries, including China, Malaysia, and Indonesia." And for the source I intended to do: Tuấn Thảo (February 24, 2011). "Video clip của Rihanna bị 11 nước kiểm duyệt" (in Vietnamese). RFI Vietnamese. http://www.viet.rfi.fr/tong-hop/20110224-video-clip-cua-rihanna-bi-11-nuoc-kiem-duyet. Retrieved July 24, 2011. (Machine translation via Google.) Thoughts? Calliopejen1 (talk) 02:31, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Chinese Characters
Okay, no more Chu Nom from now on. Calvin Marquess (talk) 00:24, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Hi DHN, Calvin Marquess keep changing his accounts (Earth Wikipedia; Heavenly Dragon) to add Han Tu to Vietnam-related articles. I have removed some of them before and he now re-added them. I think it isn't legal. Can you do something, as an experienced editor?--AM (talk) 18:46, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
South Vietnam/North Vietnam
There has been persistent edit warring on these articles recently. See this post on my talk for details. Kauffner (talk) 16:53, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
