Infobox templates

That is the standard we had used on over 80 other hurricane sites - it is not new with Katrina. Those images should be placed elsewhere on the page in an appropriate section. It just messes up all the other ones... CrazyC83 21:24, 2 September 2005 (UTC)

Template:Christian denomination tree (categories)

Why did you replace the Quakers with Pentecostalism? KHM03 21:07, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

I did that because Pentecostalism is a much more significant movement than Quakerism. I also replaced Anabaptist with Baptist because of the significance of the movement; and added Churches of Christ to Restorationism because of its significance. -- Chris 00:05, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

I would take issue with some of that...for instance, the Anabaptist movement is more significant historically than the Baptists, who were largely birthed by the Anabaptists. Quakerism, also, historically, was very important, though, I grant that it looks as if Pentecostalism is (or soon will be) equally so. Anabaptists were placed there largely to cover both the Mennonite-style folks as well as the Baptists (who are also in large part covered under Calvinism). KHM03 03:49, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

I take the general point on Anabaptism. I think another way might be for me to create a category page called "credobaptism" (as a movement) that could list all the various links for Anabaptists, Baptists, and believer baptism in general. Also a category page on "Proto-protestantism" (Waldensians, Huss, Wycliffe, Tyndale, Anabaptists, etc.). In addition, a "revivalism" page could be made that includes Methodism, among others. Moreover, I think we should delete the portion on Restoration movements, and have two lines on Protestant movements, spreading it to include: Proto-protestantism, Lutheranism, Calvinism, Credobaptism, Puritanism, Revivalism, Liberalism, Evangelicalism, and Pentecostalism. Political spectrums

I saw your proposal at Political spectrum, and responded over there. But if you're interested in political spectrums, I invite you to take a look at one I proposed. I believe its fairly balanced, and for reasons cited believe it describes the spectrum more accurately than the Nolan Chart and derived models.

By the way, my views were initially very similar to yours (pro-life, pro-universal health care), although they've shifted a bit towards the left lately. I had actually thought about starting a Communitarian Party or Christian Democratic Party, and am certainly interested in the one you're trying to get started. Your link to its website didn't bring anything up, though... If you're interested in a discussion about politics, political spectrums, or plans for the Party, I'll be back from Fresno on Sunday (leaving tommorrow morning). Christian Democracy

Hi. I'm the person who listed your article on the CDP USA on WP:AFD. I have recently been messing around with userboxes and ran into the Christian democrat userbox you made. I renamed the template in accordance with new naming standards; it's now called {{User Christian democrat}}. I also changed the template so it adds people who use the userbox to Category:Christian democrat Wikipedians. Additionally, I removed your userpage from Category:Christian Democracy and Category:Christian Democrats -- those categories are for articles in the main namespace and not user pages. I just wanted to leave you a note to explain this so you wouldn't be confused. I hope it won't be a bother.

As a further note, I just wanted to mention that I hope there are no hard feelings about deleting the page for CDP USA. I'm not against the party or Christian democrats, but it's clearly a party you're starting, so Wikipedia was being used as a forum for original work rather than an encyclopedia to document events. Fideism

I see you contributed edits to the article on Fideism. I moved the "note" to talk, because I suspect it needs to be hashed out further: I don't know of any version of Christianity that doesn't make faith in God's existence a necessary cause for salvation, even if such faith is not a sufficient cause. Proof of God's existence would therefore threaten to contradict a major element in the belief required by Christian revelation. It may be that the existing wording of the article doesn't make this clear enough, or that the "note" might be worded to read better. Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Guðsþegn, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. Redwolf24 runs the spam to keep members up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of FireFox, Flcelloguy, Titoxd, and Karmafist. The next set of elections will be in February, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

The thing I hate most about this war on freedom of speech on user pages is that the accusers always seem to have this presumption of good will, which leads to the "offending" userbox creator being guilty until proven innocent by a referendum.

Thank you for the recent compliment regarding my name, i.e. my username. I just invented the name "Guðsþegn" myself. Icelanders have a tendency to have compound names, especially patronyms of course, but also including compound given/Christian names. So for example, God's Thane --> Godsthane --> (in Icelandic or Old Norse) Guðsþegn. I was thinking about naming my son (if the Lord in his providence so gifts me) that name as well, perhaps as a middle name. Some other examples of compound given names and patronyms: Þorvaldur Eiríksson, Þorfinnur Karlsefni, Þórbergur Þórðarson, Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir, and Guðmundur Hagalín. Again, thanks. Userboxes

I can assure you I looked at the debates and restored the userboxes that should've been restored. User Catholic Evangelical wasn't deleted so I didn't touch it. It is listed on TfD and it's ultimate fate would be decided there.  Grue  20:20, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

You gotta be kidding. I didn't know about that TFD. It should never have been started because of the pending DRV that you just closed. How many votes must this userbox suffer? I still haven't fully figured out the correct text used in userboxes to make it subst the username, and hence sort the category according to name. {{PAGENAME}}? When I tried it, it didn't seem to work, but after you altered categories for the architecture userboxes, adding the one you found that I didn't know about (dang case sensitivity), it seemed to work correctly, even though as far as I could tell you didn't alter the relevant language. It's a bit bewildering. But thanks anyway. BTW, I couldn't find a 'how-to' page describing exactly how to create a category of users via inserting userboxes. Yes, it is rather complicated; I had to look at a lot of userboxes to find the ideal text, not only because of the bewildering amount of code involved for such little things, but also because many userboxes are quite inconsistent in how or whether they use categories (and in other areas)! I don't know if there's any guideline for making them; the guides at Wikipedia:Userboxes seem pretty basic, probably because users are too busy arguing over the new userbox policy votes to do much of anything else. :) I like your new boxes, though, and am glad you've got it working now; if you do have any future troubles with any templates (or anything else), no matter how trivial, feel free to give me a call here and I'll help fix 'er up or explain what's going wrong with the code.

Also, good luck with WikiProject Architecture! I look forward to any future improvements to Wikipedia's architecture articles; I've tinkered around with a few Greco-Roman architecture pages in the past, but a lot of these articles are in pretty bad shape, so it's a good thing that users have new ways to work together on this subject now! -Silence 09:36, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience: "No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention." Stress Alerts The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them. Note from the editor Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!

The last AC meeting (full log) Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on. CD temp

Hey there,

I see you've been adding the CD template to a lot of articles. Please check whether the addition of such templates does not interfere with the structure of the article. For instance, in Helmut Kohl, the template moves everything downward, leaving a gaping ugly hole in the middle. I've left the error so you can see what I mean.

Why did you change the redirect back into a full article? The content is pedestrian, unsourced, and hardly worth its own article. There was a merge proposal, and it was merged, but you've unilaterally reversed it. Why should we not revert? --Hyphen5 15:33, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Well, in fairness, there was absolutely no discussion on the talk page regarding any merge into the RC article. The sub-section part of the link (i.e. to social teaching) was dead. There is no such section there. The topic is not covered adequately there. Moreover, while the article needs work, it is not exactly a grossly-violating article. It just needs some work, not a merge. The topic is worth a stand-alone article, if not several sub-articles. It should not be folded into the RC article, because the movement Christian Democracy, which is highly tied to the concept of CST, is not tied to the Roman Catholic Church itself. In short, CD exists independently of the RC, but not of CST. :-) Therefore CST needs an independent article. For example, I am a Christian Democrat who believes in 95%+ of CST, but I'm not Roman Catholic.    GUÐSÞEGN   – UTEX – 16:28, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Okay, Christian Democracy may not exist without CST, but I think the point is that CST does not exist without the RCC! You can't justify divorcing the Church's own teachings from its article by saying that you want to claim them for CD. In any event, as somebody who likes CST, you should be just as concerned as I am about the horrible state of that article. There is no context; it's just a list, and a specious one at that. That's why we merged it; to give it more attention at Roman Catholic Church. There was no discussion happening at Catholic social teaching because hardly anyone was paying attention to it.

Can you not distinguish a difference between Vicente Fox of Mexico or Angela Merkel of Germany and the Hamas leadership of Palestine or Ali Khamenei of Iran? That's the difference betweem Christian Democracy and Islamism. The Catholic Church

Thank you for you note on my talk page. I appreciate that you and many others do not agree with the usage of the term, Catholic, for the the Church based in Rome. I respect you freedom to disagree; however, I do not believe you have the right to tell people how to name themselves. The Catholic Church could claim the rights to all the names of the various Christian Churches saying that their use of their name is "parochial." Of course this would be rude and condescending, and we do not. For instance, we could say that "Baptist" really should only be used to refer to all Christians, since we all practice baptism. Presbyterian--well, Catholics, Orthodox, and Anglicans would all have a much fairer claim to that title than Presbyterians do, since that term is understood to mean "priest," which they do not actually have. Methodists hardly have a method, but many other churches claim to. Everyone claims to be "orthodox", many churches are "episcopal" in their governance. Oh, and precisely which church is not evangelical in some fashion? ...etc., etc. (Not to mention LDS!) So, the first argument is that it is a matter of respect to call churches by how they call themselves. That is a minimum decency that civil people afford eachother. (

Also, it drives me crazy that Spanish speakers insist that the Americas are one continent and every on it is an "American," so, US citizens should really be "Unitedstatians," or some such other un-English formulation because it better suites their sensibilities. Let's just say that's not going to happen. In a likewise manner, it is very awkward English to use "Roman" in every reference to Catholicism. No one I know really talks like that. It is just poor sounding English.

Also, there are many Catholic Churches is the original sense of the term that do not call themselves "Roman," such as the Greek Catholic Church, the Ruthenian Catholic Church, the Maronite Catholic Church, etc. By original sense of the term I mean that "catholic" in the early church meant those in communion with the Church of Rome. Ignatius, if you read his discussion on the Church, literally says this! "Roman" Catholic within the Catholic Church means the "Latin Rite" almost always, though sometimes sometimes the term is used for the entire Catholic Church to ''emphasize'' the primacy of the Bishop of Rome, Primate of the West, Vicar of Christ, etc.

Now for the historical/institutional matter: No one in the 16th Century argued that the Catholic Church of Trent was a different institution from the one that Luther and the rest protested against and had sought to reform. Also, there was no Western Christian prior to the Reformation(s) that did not understand the Western Church as the Catholic Church. It is very clear that the Catholic Church after the reformation is the same institution that existed before and had alway called itself since Ignatius of Antioch the Catholic Church. The theology of sacraments, ecclesiology, etc. had not changed with the Reformation. So, the burden of proof is on someone who wants to claim that the Catholic Church ceased to be itself such that it needed to change its name.

Now this is where it gets interesting. The term "Roman Catholic" only came into vogue in the 19th Century for a number of reasons. It was a way for Catholics to distinguish themselves from others who broke away but kept the name, such as the "Old Catholics." It was a way to distinguish Latin Catholics from Eastern Rite Catholics within the Catholic Church. And, most interestingly for this discussion, Anglicans which had never had much use for any claims to being "Catholic" suddenly became interested in the term when the intense study of the previously lost patristic texts showed how ancient the term was and how "Catholic" the early church was in its theology and ecclesiology. Such patristic studies gave rise to the Oxford Movement and eventually the claim to Anglo-Catholicism. Of course, that the Anglican church was clearly protestant historically is demonstrated by such names as "The Protestant Episcopal Church of American," which is the original name of the ECUSA.

The term "Catholic Church" is never used in capitalized form for the "universal Christian church," because that would be confused with the Catholic Church. Except in the creeds, this term is never used without qualification for that purpose. Besides, we are talking about corporate entities, concrete churches. The abstranct sense is not a practical term but a theological conception (which does not make it any less real, but does put it in another distinct specific conversation in which the speakers would know the difference).

Lastly, while Catholics do occasionally call themselves Roman Catholics (only in the West) we have at no time in history ever ceased to call ourselves simply Catholics. This the name for our Church and ourselves in continuous use from the time of Igantius of Antioch ~107 A.D. Use of "the Catholic Church" is not "parochial," which seems to be an intentionally demeaning term, but is rather historical. Ignatius, by the way, was an Eastern Patriarch (of Antioch) and still claimed communion with the Bishops and especially the Bishop of Rome as the essential way to distinguish orthodox Christianity from false revelations, prophets, philosophies, etc. This explains the strangeness of WP aticles on publications such as the "National Catholic Reporter" with the word Roman interjected at every instance of the word "Catholic" except in the title of the "NCR" and the WP article title on the subject. It is just awkward, forced and ultimately a POV ideological imposition.

Administrator Coaching The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service. This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins. A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Re: Fair use in templates

While it may be legal, it is still not permited by Wikipedia policy. The reason for this is that having a large number of exceptions depending on a dizzying array of potential circumstances creates a situation that is untenable from a management of copyright concerns perspective. Thus, the policy is written such that the use of fair use images in templates is proscribed. Please see Wikipedia:Fair use criteria item #9 where it says "All other uses, even if legal under the fair use clauses of copyright law, should be avoided". Fair use images are to be used only in main namespace articles. Thus, it was properly removed from {{Christian Democracy sidebar}}. If you have any questions about this, I'd be happy to answer. Box on CST page

Kristófur, I have a suggestion concerning the Catholic social teaching page, and the Chistian Democracy box. The box was deleted during the recent cleanup efforts, as a couple of us were concerned that CST was more than just a subtopic of CD. I noticed that you put it back in recently. (Well, we are supposed to edit boldly . . . ;) ) Instead of just reverting that change, I have an proposal for you. I still think the box may be a bit much for that page, but the Euopean Christain Democracy movement has played an important part in the development of CST, a part that simply concentrating on encyclicals will miss. Apparently, you know a great deal more about the CD movement than the rest of us -- would you consider dropping the box, but adding some content about the interaction of CD and the development of CST? I think it would result in a greatly improved article, perhaps a better one than many of the alternatives on the net.

No this is Wikipedia and space is limited in articles. They are only so long and text and pictures always take priority over nav templates which add nothing to an articles content and in fact encourage readers to go elsewhere. Those of us who actually write articles and take pride in our work are fairly miffed by the proliferation of multi-colored, half-screen-size nav templates that squash the text and pictures made by people who never contributed anything to the article in the first place. Then when people complain you don't say "OK, maybe we can try a less obtrusive version, like one along the bottom of the page etc.." you force it and point to other large ugly obtrusive templates which are redundant with Categories and See Also's - why not just make the top %50 of the article a big nav template, I could think of a few thousand articles that could be linked to Christianity. -- Stbalbach 20:20, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!) Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach. Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins. What's New? The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one! The last AC meeting (full log) The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived. There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia. The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested! In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias. A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted! Project News Four articles are at FA level and sixteen are GA level articles. You can help by adopting a topic. There is a lot of work for this Wikiproject. Go to tasks to find out how to help. Please help with the Destubbification Drive. John Carter created the template {{Christian list}}. There are currently five article being peer reviewed by the peer review team. Please stop by and see if there is any way that you could contribute to those articles. It has been proposed by John Carter that the various other projects which relate to Christianity ought to all at least tag those articles which fall within their scope. That way, this project would have a better idea which articles do not fall within the specific scope of any of the other related projects. Articles can be "tagged" by placing {{ChristianityWikiProject}} in the articles talk page. WikiProject United States Government

Greetings. I noticed that you are one of the members of WikiProject United States Government that are still active so I wanted to ask you a question. It appears that this project is mostly inactive aside from what the members might be doing independently. I was considering suggesting that this project be pulled in under WikiProject United States and wanted to solicit comments from some of this projects members before doing so. As with Washington DC and the others the project would for the most part maintain its own independence but I believe this would benefit both projects.
