The Handsworth Union Debating Society was created in October 2005, as the official machine to channel formal debating and the procurement of free and intelligent speech in Handsworth Grammar School, Birmingham, United Kingdom. The founding members were Damilare Tanimowo and Mark Moloney who was bestowed the post of Honorary Chairman, these two forming the Executive Board. The Union prides itself on offering automatic membership to all members of the school population Modelled on the prestigious Oxford Union, after ratifying its constitution, the first formal act of the Society was that 'This House resolves that student tuition fees are not right and necessary' by 7 ayes to 5 noes.

With its further stance on adoption: 'This House resolves that gay couples should have the right to adopt' by 14 votes for to 8 against, the Union has gained something of a reputation for a libertarian outlook which many associate with the centre-left of the political spectrum, however the central tenet of the Union is to promote the rigorous debating of dissenting views.

The Society continues to be a robust tool for involving students in the political process within the walls of the School, and also has close links with 'The Orator' periodical.
