[edit] Wikimania Oxford bid
Some time ago you indicated your support of the Oxford 2010 Wikimania Bid, and it was recieved with much gratitude. I now ask if you could could help support our bid by contributing to the bid page that is located at: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2010/Bids/Oxford. Now is the critical period for work to continue on the bid as the official bidding period has now started and the jury has been formed.
I do not ask for huge swathes of time, just enough that with eveyrone working on this, it can be completed in time to the high standard required in a bid. For the bid page, an excellent source of information is the travel wiki article on the City of Oxford which is found at: http://wikitravel.org/en/Oxford. The chance of bringing Wikimania to the UK is the best so far and i expect the best chance for many years. With a fresh and stong UK chapter we have an amazing opportunity to put ourselves on the map. If you have any questions, please mail them to the Wikimedia UK mailing list, email me or post a message on my talk page and i will answer as quickly as possible.
I look forward to working with you on the bid page. Many Thanks. Seddσn talk 15:13, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Adam Nicolson
Mervyn
I am the Adam Nicolson whose page you keep re-editing for me. I am a professional writer and I don't want people who look me up on Wikipedia immediately to be re-directed to a page that announces in 5 foot high letters that I have, through no fault of my own, become 5th Baron Carnock. This is a labelling issue. Can I please ask you, as I don't know how to manipulate the title of a page in Wikipedia, to remove the redirect instruction from the page called simply 'Adam Nicolson', so that all the information currently to be found on the page entitled 'Adam Nicolson, 5th Baron Carnock' is found there instead.
with many thanks for your understanding
Adam

- Adam, my apologies. I've moved your article back to the original title. We do usually mention noble titles in the first sentence (rather than the title) even for noblemen who don't use them—see Michael Ancram for instance—but I've noted that (if I understand your remarks correctly) you don't currently use the title. I hope you find this suitable; you can contact me at my talk page if you have any further concerns or objections and I'll do my best to accommodate you. Choess (talk) 13:25, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Proposed deletion of Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:
- No third party sourcing; no actual demonstration of notability. Charity registration and a self-produced video at YouTube are not enough to satisfy minimum notability requirements. Has the organization ever gotten a canal built? Or even gotten press coverage?
All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on OVH, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Me-123567-Me (talk) 00:30, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
[edit] Nomination of OVH for deletion
A discussion has begun about whether the article OVH, which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/OVH until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.
You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Me-123567-Me (talk) 05:03, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Autopatrolled
Hello, this is just to let you know that I have granted you the "autopatrolled" permission. This won't affect your editing, it just automatically marks any page you create as patrolled, benefiting new page patrollers. Please remember:
- This permission does not give you any special status or authority
- Submission of inappropriate material may lead to its removal
- You may wish to display the {{Autopatrolled}} top icon and/or the {{User wikipedia/autopatrolled}} userbox on your user page
- If, for any reason, you decide you do not want the permission, let me know and I can remove it
- If you have any questions about the permission, don't hesitate to ask. Otherwise, happy editing! Acalamari 21:32, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Conversion of old monetary values to modern equivalents
Hello Mervyn,
I have a question that I don't even know the right words to use to ask of Wiki, so I wonder if you know the best way to appreciate/convert old monetary values. Is there a template(s), a table(s), a page(s) that I have never found?
- How much would 1,000 dollars from 1900 be worth today? .... in dollars? ...in pounds sterling?
- How much would 1,000 French Francs from 1900 be worth today? .... in dollars? ...in Euros? ...in a working man's wages? ...in loaves of bread?
I'm not asking for the answers to the above, I am interested in the method/tables etc.
Many thanks Chienlit (talk) 13:49, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, You need an "inflation calculator" - have a look at the links here... http://projects.exeter.ac.uk/RDavies/arian/current/howmuch.html
- Hope that helps, --Mervyn (talk) 15:05, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you. Very interesting. I assume there is no magic page in Wiki, but at least I now know which ball-park to search in and which words to use. Many thanks. Chienlit (talk) 21:17, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
- ... I thought you might like to know how useful the "inflation calculator" link is already (Léon Lemartin) although the article still needs a bit of polishing. Many thanks (in advance

[edit] Sid Ferris
Hello Mervyn, I have received this note from Ohconfucius about Sid Ferris. ...
I would just like to compliment you on your nice little article on the above. As the cigarette card image is now PD, I have put it onto Commons. I also note that the UK National Archives has 9 pages of autobiographical notes by Sid Ferris, written on headed notepaper of the Vegetarian Cycling & Athletic Club donated to it by Raleigh. I don't know if it is possible for you or someone else in the UK to go and access this (Archives record number:DD/RN/4/86/2/2-10) --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 06:25, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
... Do you know how to get at the National Archive records that he links to? Regards. Chienlit (talk) 10:29, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

- Hi Mervyn, Sorry I troubled you. It appears that I would have to travel to Nottingham and ask a dusty old archivist to find a dusty old shoe box containing the papers. Only the index is online. ...and they charge 50p per click if I use my own camera. I hope that you didn't waste any time on this. Regards Chienlit (talk) 16:43, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Citation for Tiffany Blue RGB?
hi Mervyn, you created the InfoBox for the Tiffany Blue article back in 2007. Is there a public source documenting that the Tiffany Blue color is RGB #0ABAB5? The Tiffany Blue-ish graphics on the tiffany.com website are RGB #81D8D0. Runtime (talk) 04:53, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
- Not sure I can find anything now. May just have been my best guess at the time! Those carefree days of 2007! Feel free to change. Thanks.--Mervyn (talk) 08:42, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Hiallt
Hello Mervyn,
May I ask you for a small favour, please? I have created the page on Hiallt, an obscure Viking whose DNA has had a disproportionate(ly bad) effect on the world, but I am not confident of the veracity of my reading of the chart of his ancestral lineage. The reference Google books, The British Chronicles, Volume 2 By David Hughes, Page 527 shows his family chart, and I believe it shows that Hiallt was the great, great, great, great, great grandson of Ogier the Dane (aka Holgar "Danske"). But I am not familiar with such charts, and I am not sure if the minimal entries for Ivar and Magnus represent full generations, &/or illegitimacy, &/or insufficient information, or something else. Could you please take a look and explain/correct any misunderstanding. Many thanks Chienlit (talk) 16:43, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
p.s. I am also uncomfortable with writing great great great ... but regard it as 'work in progress' that some kind soul ( :-) ) may also improve.

[edit] William Ernest Henley
Hi, I am writing a Norwegian article about the poet, and I am wondering if you can help me with a problem. His wife is said to be Salina Robinson Henley, but in the article about their daughter, Margaret Henley, she is named as Anna Boyle, a sister of a former school mate of him. I have found references to both. So, did he have two wives, or is one of the names wrong? --Finn Bjørklid (talk) 01:10, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
