[edit] midpoints in Hadamard spaces

According to what you wrote,

The point m is then a midpoint of x and y: d(x,z) = d(z,y) = d(x,y) / 2.

After the colon, the point m is not mentioned, and the statement that appears there looks as if it says that z, rather than m, is a midpoint between x and y. Michael Hardy (talk) 12:06, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it's a typo :) Thanks for spotting it. (I first used z to denote the midpoint, then forgot to change it to m later.) -- Taku (talk) 12:58, 6 August 2011 (UTC) By the way, I didn't know H is silent. Interesting. -- Taku (talk) 13:01, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Localizations

Hi, this is concerning the question I had that came up about localizations which are domains. My commutative algebra is not very well exercised, but I think you can help. My first thought was "If two nonzero elements of R were such that ab=0, then in a localization at a multiplicative set S, wouldn't (a,1)(b,1)=(0,1)?" I think I'm just overlooking something special that happens when P is prime, which probably makes one of (a,1) or (b,1) zero in the localization. So far, whenever I try to look at (a,1) and (b,1) being nonzero, I just get "a and b are both in P", and then I don't see a path. Thanks for looking at this, Rschwieb (talk) 17:58, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Oh, of course, this just shows that zero divisors turning into non-zero divisors is consistent :P I will find myself a nice example to look at and thank you for your time. Rschwieb (talk) 19:28, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
I didn't do anything. But maybe I did something. So, you're welcome :) -- Taku (talk) 13:14, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
I figured if I'm nice now, then you'll answer questions later too. My first being: do you know if normal rings are always reduced? In the Noetherian case, they're reduced by that structure theorem cited. I didn't see a direct proof of my hunch, though. Rschwieb (talk) 14:59, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Well, in [1], they define a normal ring to be (i) reduced and (ii) integrally closed everywhere. So, no probably not in general. (But this begs a counterexample.) -- Taku (talk) 15:53, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
I also saw that requirement in Eisenbud's book. BTW, being in a business where logic is important, I hope you're aware of the misuse of the phrase "begs the question", which has now become a sad fact of life. I never use "begs a noun" or "begs the noun" mainly so that I don't encourage the misuse, but also I would be afraid of eliciting smirks at conferences... Anyhow, compromising with "begs for a counterexample" is a (sensical) substitute. I am interested in a counterexample then, if you run across one.Rschwieb (talk) 16:19, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Not sure if you noticed, but I left a footnote in integrally closed domain to explain that if all localizations of R are reduced, then so is R. I think the argument is complete but let me know if I slipped. Rschwieb (talk) 20:17, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Actually, I completely missed your edit: I have been caught up by other stuff. Also, I couldn't find any source saying "reduced" is a local property. But I think the proof is correct: so it must be true, then? I tweaked the proof. I hope you don't mind. -- Taku (talk) 22:29, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

I don't mind, I would have done it myself if I weren't worried about the length of the footnote. But there aren't a lot of footnotes really so it shouldn't matter. Does 'local property' here just mean that if the localizations at primes have a property, so does the original ring? Or does the property have to go both ways?

I don't know enough about algebraic geometry to deduce what a geometric interpretation of 'reduced' means. In the noncommutative case I just think of reduced and nonsingular rings as having very nice (self injective von Neumann regular) maximal quotient rings. Rschwieb (talk) 00:47, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Well, "reduced" means no nonzero nilpotent and, geometrically speaking (long pause) I think it's very hard to explain it: there are no "nilpotent" in classical algebraic geometry, as I understand. Maybe an alternative approach is to consider the relation between "reduced" and "separable". Unfortunately, neither our reduced ring and separable extension don't answer your questions (but they should.) -- 14:50, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Request for translation

Hi Takyua, I saw your name on the list of translators from Japanese to English and I have a request to make of you. It could be quite challenging. Could you possibly translate the text from Hokusai's 1820 erotic woodcut The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife, at File:Tako to ama retouched.jpg? It is already transcribed, but the transcription may need a double check. It may feature old slang and terms with different connotations than modern Japanese. Thanks in advance. Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:29, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough with the classic Japanese to translate it. Try asking someone with expertise on ukiyoe. (though I wonder if there is any in Wikipedia.) -- Taku (talk) 14:54, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
  • Thanks. MSJapan said he'd give it a shot. Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:41, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Merge and something else on localizations

Your speedy action on the merge makes me feel like a bully now. I half expected you'd have half a dozen paragraphs of interesting results on f.g.f.e. and we'd have to merge adjunction into it. Or maybe you already have that in the works... Anyhow about the localization thing, I found out that Kap's Theorem 168 basically makes our ad-hoc proof obsolete, and so I'm going to incorporate it and remove the proof. I had assumed the structure theorem made special use of "normal" but it looks like it's beside the point. Rschwieb (talk) 16:21, 19 September 2011 (UTC) Ah, hold on, I need to modify that modification. Perhaps what we have is needed after all. Rschwieb (talk) 16:31, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

(Laugh) No, I didn't have any "grand vision" for the future of the article: I started it without much thought, and so there is no trouble merging. wiki is supposed to be quick after all. About the proof, I realized that it's also related to the fact that a scheme is reduced iff it is so locally (i.e., the stalks are reduced). Hartshorne ex 2.3. So, the statement is definitely correct. What we really need is the creation of reduced scheme and the expansion of reduced ring. A trouble is the two concepts are closely related (actually the same?) In any case, I don't think the proof is a big deal. -- Taku (talk) 16:35, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
This might be my excuse to start learning about schemes. As a ring theorist, I never really ran into a reason why reduced rings should be so interesting, but since in the commutative case it corresponds to "nonsingular" I guess they can get more mileage out of it. When you add in geometric meaning, there's another whole layer of meaning also, so I guess I missed out on some stuff. Rschwieb (talk) 17:18, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
I don't have the book with me, but I think I remember this: For any commutative ring R with nilradical N, Spec(R) is homeomorphic to Spec(R/N) (I mean to say both are equipped with the Zariski topology). I read briefly in the wiki that schemes were a useful generalization of varieties which allowed nilpotence to be studied, but if what I'm vaguely recalling is true it looks like nilpotent elements aren't important for varieties. Thoughts? Rschwieb (talk) 01:48, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

You raised an important point: the topology of a scheme (as I understand) cannot detect nilpotent elements. So, the geometry of scheme is something very algebraic. (duh, it's algebraic geometry.) Since the classical algebraic geometry didn't have nilpotens, the geometry with nilpotent elements is something that doesn't have counterpart in the classical case. This geometry is, apparently, important, in, for example, the study of algebraic groups. (cf. Milne, http://www.jmilne.org/math/CourseNotes/ALA.pdf. He stresses the importance of allowing nilpotent elements.) -- Taku (talk) 14:14, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

This is an interesting fact, and thanks for the link. It's all consistent: to paraphrase Klein, "Algebra⊇Geometry". If that really were the case though I shouldn't be feeling so clueless about the study of geometry :) Rschwieb (talk) 14:34, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

If/when possible, could you translateInterview by Japan's Media Arts Festival. Unfortunatly, their English page does not contain a translation. :( This appears to be one of the better resources out their too. I got the jist of the first 2 sections being background info on Horii, but the kanji is beyond me for most of that article.
