A progression of warnings helps deter future vandalism, because it shows the vandal that their actions are being monitored and that they will be blocked if they continue. A request

Thanks for your help on recent changes. It would help identify the repeat vandals if you would issue warnings when you make a reversion. It is certainly a discretionary action, but it would make it easier on the admins to identify those individuals that simply aren't changing their behavior. Just to say that Avoided (talk · contribs) has issued 117 warnings since we requested it just before midnight UTC, so I think we are OK on that now. BTW, four warnings aren't actually required. For example, when there isn't any possibility that an edit was made in good faith—e.g. if it is just filthy language or garbage like "fdsjfgkdjsaTgyehsjekghsikebdhjxztkegfv"—it is OK to start with a level two warning. When an account re-commences obvious vandalism very shortly after a block expires, you can start with level three or higher. If an account has vandalised many articles in a very short space of time and is still active, you can leave a "immediate" ({{uw-vandal4im}}) warning and get ready to go straight to WP:AIV.
