Hi Mbekey, and welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed your edits to BIRN, and appreciate your efforts to improve the page. However, Wikipedia must be very careful to avoid copyright, and the text you use is from this website: http://www.birncommunity.org/about/overview/. Do you have any proof that this content is public domain or that the author(s) have licensed it Creative Commons or GFDL? Then we can put your edits right back into the article from the history tab. -kslays (talkcontribs) 18:04, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed the site you copied the text from does have a CC license, but it unfortunately does NOT allow derivative works: http://www.birncommunity.org/copyright/. So unfortunately we cannot use that text with your improvements to it. Perhaps we could put it in as a block quote though. -kslays (talkcontribs) 18:12, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kslays -- thanks for the message. I'm the marketing person for BIRN, & will look into getting the specific permission you cite. I appreciate your efforts to keep Wikipedia text legal. In the worst case, I'll rewrite the content -- it was just easier to cut-&-paste parts of it given that a team had worked very hard on the language already.

Meantime, there are other people involved with BIRN who wanted to review my edits, & were surprised they had disappeared. Is the text archived somewhere where we can find it?

Oh, okay, I'm glad you're re-writing the article. Your edits are all saved - look on the "History" tab on the upper right part of the page. If you want to review, edit, or revert back to your version, just click on the date of your last edit. You can edit that (now old) page, and save that version. You can also use the history page to review any changes from one version to another. It's the "no derivatives" part that is really a problem - I would suggest licensing the BIRN content "BY-SA" which means attribution and share-alike (all derivatives must also be licensed CC-BY-SA). Also, the text appears to be promotional of BIRN, and Wikipedia material must be written with a neutral point of view. Let me know if I can be of any help. -kslays (talkcontribs) 15:00, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also, you'll want to clear Information Sciences Institute of any content copied from other websites without a CC-BY-SA or GFDL license (ie http://www3.isi.edu/about-isi_profile.htm) ASAP or it is likely to be deleted. Wikipedia policy is to take copyright very seriously and act immediately. -kslays (talkcontribs) 16:04, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mbekey, I just got your message about your recent edits to BIRN. I don't edit Wikipedia all that often, but I'll see if I can help out - I'm happy to encourage fellow editors! A few tips: On talk pages, be sure to sign using four tildes: ~~~~. Also, try to make good use of the Preview button and make sure the page looks how you want before hitting "Save page" - it makes reviewing your edits much easier! In case there are other editors interested, let's take this discussion to the BIRN Discussion Page - please see my comments there and respond. -kslays (talkcontribs) 03:19, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Req. Edit[edit]

Would someone who's an editor please take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_Sciences_Institute? I've been updating the content, removing the promotional tone & adding numerous references & links. I realize it'll still need 3rd-party references for a lot of things, but am wondering whether the caution about the "promotional tone" at the top could be removed. Thanks. - Mbekey.

I wouldn't remove it yet. A few of the strong indicators of a non-encyclopedic tone that come to my view immediately are the use of lots of in-line external links (generally avoided, see WP:ELPOINTS #2), not to mention "More information on ISI research can be found on YouTube." An encyclopedic "Expertise" section would largely summarize what other, reliable, third-party sources have said about ISI's expertise. If there isn't any such third-party coverage, a few words about ISI's self-described expertise could still be appropriate, but not a large list.
And there is a point which applies more broadly. About half of the article is sourced to, and written from, what ISI says about itself. This is a poor balance. The strong majority of information, generally, in an encyclopedia should consist of summaries of third-party reporting.
As a stylistic detail, I'd also take a look at WP:BURL. This is not in any way related to the neutrality issues.
Thank you for your efforts to improve our encyclopedia! --j⚛e deckertalk 18:55, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for February 6[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Information Sciences Institute, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Soar (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 08:59, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Requested edit[edit]

I've been editing the Information Sciences Institute page to update it & remove the promotional tone. Is it possible for an editor to review it & consider removing the advertising warning at the top? Thanks.

Answered above. Also, I had to change the subheaders here, trying to put a requested edit template within the header text was causing the wikitext to explode. Let me know if I can answer any questions or concerns. Best regards, --j⚛e deckertalk 18:56, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
