Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button (Insert-signature.png or Button sig.png) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Athletes.[edit]

Greetings! I have made the requested page moves for (athlete) → (specific event), but please fix the incoming links correspondingly before changing any redirects to point to the disambiguation pages. I am adding redirect hatnotes to the affected articles for now. Cheers! bd2412 T 15:10, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. It'll take a while to sort that out before the next tranche of "(athlete)" moves -- 65.94.169.222 (talk) 04:32, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
User:BD2414 Please stop with the unnecessary moves. (athlete) is the conventional disambiguation for people who participate in athletics. The more specific, unnecessary disambiguations are not. They further confuse users, most specifically myself. I brought the issue up at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Athletics#Relevant Rfc at Talk:Sportsperson. Please reserve the creative and specific disambiguation names like when we have Steve Smith (pole vaulter) (born 1951), US pole vaulter, Steve Smith (US high jumper) (born 1971), US high jumper, Steve Smith (British high jumper) (born 1973), British high jumper. There is only one Mike Powell in athletics, Mike Powell (athlete) sufficed. Jesse Williams (athlete) sufficed. It should remain consistent with the huge number of existing athletics articles until further disambiguation is necessary. Without the redirect, there will be too many exceptions for regular users, much less newbies, to remember and properly refer to. Your many contributions are greatly appreciated, but we have a certain pattern that has been used for years. Trackinfo (talk) 08:31, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
per talk:athlete (formerly talk:sportsperson) "athlete" does not mean "athletics" and "athletics" doesn't mean what you imply it means. Athletics is a disambiguation page, while athlete is the page for sportsperson. Our disambiguatory terms cannot so greatly conflict with what our articles say, nor what all varieties of English call an "athlete" in general (per talk:athlete discussion that renamed the page) ; regular users and newbies would not expect "athlete" to mean the sport named "athletics", as indicated by the disambiguation page at athletics and prior to the move of sportsperson, the disambiguation page at athlete. The discussion about objections to the use of "athlete" should therefore be occurring at WT: WikiProject Sports not WikiProject Athletics. -- 65.94.169.222 (talk) 08:55, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

30 SW RFC[edit]

Would you be interested in certifying this RFC? It just needs people to certify that we have tried to work with them and have failed in doing so, and since you have attempted to do that and are familiar with their work, I figured I would ask you. Thanks! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 05:37, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. Not really sure what I could contribute, as I've only been involved with the Fairfax matter, and not the editing of this user in general, or on topics other than the Fairfax set. -- 65.94.169.222 (talk) 06:31, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
I think even a comment there stating that you agree with this would be a big help, since a lot of what they have done has gone under the radar per se, but the fact that they have been cherry-picking sources or are just blindly working with the sources and not knowing exactly what is going on (i.e. Fairfax) means that there are probably even more issues because these are only the things we are familiar with, not just two random occurrences. Michael McDonald[edit]

Who changed his page from Michael McDonald (fighter) to Michael McDonald (mixed martial artist)? "Fighter" is the official designations for MMA fighters, not "mixed martial artist". This needs to be fixed. LiberatorLX (talk) 01:56, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

"fighter" is also a term used for boxers and other martial artists, as well as freedom fighters, and other warfighters. You can request a name change back with WP:RMTR , but cutting-and-pasting an article is the wrong way to do it. -- 65.94.169.222 (talk) 03:15, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Actually, for boxers it's "boxer", and martial artists it's "martial artist". For MMA fighters, it's "fighter". LiberatorLX (talk) 03:58, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
In the English language, "fighter" as a term to describe a person existed long before the sport of MMA existed. So, martial artists are called fighters, MMA fighters are also martial artists, kickboxers are also called fighters. Warfighters are also called fighters. When there are multiple persons with the same name with articles on Wikipedia who can be described as "fighter", the diambiguator "fighter" loses its disambiguational effectiveness. -- 65.94.169.222 (talk) 04:02, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi[edit]

Re. Lü Lin → Lu Lin (table tennis) – or Lu Lin (ping pong); there are two references on this article, and neither uses "Lü", they both use "Lu". Further WP:PINYIN dissuades using diacritics with people names 65.94.169.222 (talk) 04:44, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Hiya, I don't support the RM but knowing that you're not an editor who knowingly goes against existing guideline project consensus I'm pretty certain that you were in good faith wrong-footed by poor wording in that guideline - poor wording that has caused confusion between the closed sixth vowel ü (used in Pinyin, used to be v) and tone marks (often dropped in pinyin and dropped in MOS:CHINESE). You may be interested that there's a discussion going on at Wikipedia Talk:Naming conventions (Chinese) about whether the guideline really is clear to non-China editors on the difference of which diacritic marking pinyin includes and which diacritic markings we don't. Those familiar with it evidently think it is clear, I'd be interested in your comments there as a good faith "outsider" to WikiProject China. In ictu oculi (talk) 02:09, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up (My IP has rotated) ; My opinion hasn't really changed, it's still WP:V, WP:NOR, WP:UE, WP:BLP anything that prescribes a form that isn't actually used fails "V" if another form exists that is used. If the form requested isn't used in English while another form is commonly or frequently used in English, it fails UE. Using a form not found in English is SYN, if sufficient English usage exists to establish common usage. Using a form not found at all, but where other forms exist to establish latin-letter common usage, then that fails NOR. -- 65.94.171.225 (talk) 05:40, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
