I agree. However, any decent or promising software deserves a mention. The list should be as comprehensive as possible. I have looked at a few of the items your editing removed, and they obviously include noteworthy if not more than noteworthy software. Even if someone added their software to the article for advertising purposes, you should remove only the advertising bit, and avoid "punishing" them by removing the item completely. That a software package does not have a Wikipedia article is most definitely not a good enough reason for removing it from the list. Instead, how about creating an article?
