Wikimeet Houston[edit]

Hi, I noticed you are from houston and wanted to say that I am trying to get a WikiMeet Houston organized... let me know if you interested... here is the link: Wikipedia:Meetup/Houston. Flying Hamster 17:32, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Year navigation in academy awards[edit]

Hi ACupOfCoffe, I have traced the addition of the big year navigation template of the academy awards to you (March 6th). The fact that the award for films of a certain year is awarded in the next year is often confusing. However the header of the navigation states "award ceremonies", whereas the years linked refer to the year of films honored. Either the header should be changed or some note should be added. I have been doing large scale updating in the years in film (as in 1985 in film) and have been adding awards and making things more consistent through the years. Golden Globe also partially uses such a navigation and I intend to apply it to all the award years too. So this is a point that has to be made very clear, or there is bound to be confusion. Please, let me know what you think is best to do. Hoverfish 19:22, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't have mush of an interest in those pages, so I'd suggest asking on those talk pages. If I had to pick one, I'd say change the header. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 23:26, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

I have 30-second .ogg audio clips -- but what should I select for licensing?[edit]

Hello there, ACupOfCoffee. I am working on an A-class article of an Indian music composer (Ilaiyaraaja). I have recorded 30 second audio clips of this musician's songs in .ogg format, to include on his Wiki as sound samples (the Michael Jackson page does it). Now, my question is this: when I upload it onto the Wikipedia Commons, what sort of licensing should I select, since these are 30-second audio clips that I had created based on this musician's songs? I have read the fair use guide on Wikipedia[[1]]. I know that I may have to provide 'fair use rationale' for putting these audio clips are, thats no problem. But I just want to know if I could go ahead and do it now or do I need to get permission from the musician or his record company first? Would appreciate some guidance as I'm totally clueless on the procedure, especially since there is a lot of fuss about free use/fair use. Cheers, AppleJuggler 05:14, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Fair use isn't allowed on Commons, but for uploading it here, I would tag it them just like the Michael Jackson ones with {{Music sample}}. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 23:01, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Abe Vigoda.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Abe Vigoda.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 06:04, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Fair Use help[edit]

Hi. I uploaded an image from the official site of the Profile in Courage award. I believe this to be a fair use of the image, as its presence on Wikipedia illustrates the work in question. Can you assist me in determining the proper tag? Alan 02:17, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

I would suggest using the {{Fair use in}} tag, as I can't find another one that actually describes this one at the moment. It's obviously fair use, but it doesn't fall into one of the neat little categories already set up. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 05:06, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your encouragement to develop my entry.: " Cosmological meaning of human life"[edit]

I realize that my entry is written in a bad English .. If you have the idea who could help me to correct my text - let me know.. I am willing to consider also any advices related to this subject..

Thank you .. User:Anbro

Just request it on the article's talk page. Or perhaps tag it for {{cleanup}}. If you're not too comfortable in English, you might visit one of the other language versions of Wikipedia. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 20:57, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Image:Abe Vigoda.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Abe Vigoda.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 03:12, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

GFDL/CC-BY-SA 2.5[edit]

  • Thanks for your input. The link you sent from the free software foundation rails against using the nondescript term "creative commons license". What I am talking about is the specific creative commons license that is compatible with the GFDL when the other terms of the GFDL are met.

Here's what I mean by compatible: Lets say I come across a work that is licensed under the CC-BY-SA 2.5. That license gives me the permission to appropriate and republish that work under its own terms (give attribution to the author and include a copy or pointer to the original license). If I then use that permission to publish the work on Wikipedia under a dual-license, the contribution remains available under the CC license and also becomes available under the GFDL. Since the contribution is now licensed under the GFDL, its derivative works are also GFDL. Someone wishing to use the the CC licensed contributions without meeting the additional terms of the GFDL would either (A) research the history of the article and re-use only those contributions which are dual-licensed or (B) Follow the link back to the CC-licensed source material and use it directly. This gets complicated (see Wikipedia:Multi-licensing), but is not against the rules. --Dystopos 14:45, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Atlantic Records[edit]

Hello, ACupOffCoffee You linked this [[2]] sandbox in the Atlantic Records discussion forum, and indicated that you wrote it. Could anyone link me to a list of code-thingies for the colours? i tried in my talk page, but could only get black (color:#0000TT) and dark blue (color:#0000FG). Is there a list, or could someone post a list? most of them seem to result in black lettering. this was the full code:

<-div style="-font-size: 180px; -color:#0000FF; -line-height:-100%; ">-'-'-'-WORD-'-'-'-</-di-v>-

minus all the "-" that I put in there to stop it actually writing it. I know i havent been terribly clear or leet but would it be possible for some guidance? sry for making new subject & everything, but i didnt know who else might know... Many Thanks :) (PS Sorry for second edit, realised that colour:#0000FG went black. colour:#0000CB should be dark blue) WookieLord 01:04, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

You can just put it in or tags to keep it from actually executing. A go[d repository of the colors is here: http://www.diefenbachgasse.at/inf/colornames.htm — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 08:23, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

When the only editor of an article blanks it, that's a request for deletion, so don't revert it. Just let an admin delete it. (referring to Megz) — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 08:12, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Problem is, blanking a speedied page removes it from the category, making it just a touch harder to find. I figured putting the speedy notice back on can only be a good thing. --HubHikari 08:13, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:84summerolympicslogo.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:84summerolympicslogo.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

The following images also have this problem:

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Wikipedia Reviewer.svg

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

Wikipedia Ambassador Program in Houston[edit]

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you're listed as a Wikipedian from Houston. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors from the Houston area, to help with Wikipedia assignments at Texas Southern University. Classes at TSU will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester, and the role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

If you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone in Houston who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page. Thanks!--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 19:46, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

History of Jardine, Matheson & Co.[edit]

Hi, thanks for your edits on the History of Jardine, Matheson & Co. but you should be aware that when "Jardines" is used as a noun it does not have an apostrophe - this only applies to the possessive case. Best ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 08:29, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

I was under the impression that since the name of the company is singular, any usage with an "s" would be possessive — sort of like McDonald's. Would that not be the case? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 06:45, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── This is the historic usage and is grammatically correct insofar as "Jardines" refers to the collection of people that made up the partnership - so its already a plural like people and its possessive form is always Jardine's. Check out some of the references - they all use Jardines. Best ► Philg88 ◄ Star.pngtalk 06:57, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
