Theatres in Sutton[edit]

The search engine takes a while to index new articles, so unfortunately, it's just a case of waiting.--Launchballer 12:42, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I had a feeling it might be something like that - thanks for confirming. At least I now know for sure that it will sort itself out in time.A P Monblat (talk) 15:57, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
In the meantime, could you add a reference for each section and top up Secombe Theatre to 1,500 characters (currently 1,127)? I'd like to nominate the articles for DYK.--Launchballer 19:41, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
I have done a bit on the Secombe so far, but there is more to do. It might take a couple of days to get it perfect A P Monblat (talk) 01:24, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Secombe now completed, I think. It is fully referenced, and I think must be over 1,500 characters - how does one check exactly? A P Monblat (talk) 11:30, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I use WP:DYKCHECK, and it says 2,003.--Launchballer 11:48, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks - I have made a couple of further small improvements. A P Monblat (talk) 12:15, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I have now fully referenced the Charles Cryer Theatre article as well. When are you planning to nominate the two articles? A P Monblat (talk) 19:23, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
As soon as they were eligible. I have now nominated them.--Launchballer 19:57, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. A P Monblat (talk) 20:49, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Sutton armillary[edit]

Hi there!

Re that new article - there's a few problems with it.

You need to provide more references to reliable sources, plural.

There's several reasons; firstly, you need to show "notability", which on Wikipedia means showing "significant coverage in reliable sources".

Secondly, readers need to be able to 'check the facts' - everything needs to be 'verifiable'. Anything that isn't can be removed by other editors. If the information can't be backed up by a reliable source, it doesn't belong on Wikipedia.

Thirdly, when there is only one source it's often hard to avoid copyright violations and/or close paraphrasing. For example,

Source: The Armillary The Clubs conceived, planned and together with other organisations funded the Armillary in response to the Council's request several years ago for Millennium projects that had a direct relationship with time. The Armillary is in the form of an historical timepiece, was designed to be durable for many more years

Your article: the Rotary Club conceived, planned and, together with other organisations, funded the armillary in response to the local Council's earlier request for millennium projects that had a direct relationship with time. The armillary was designed to be durable for years to come

You also need to take care to maintain a neutral point-of-view. For example, you shouldn't say that it is a popular feature of the town and provide an iconic focus unless you can support it with really good third-party references (such as newspaper articles or books) saying that; and in fact, it's probably best to leave those things out altogether. Just stick to facts.

I hope this will be useful advice, and that you'll be able to tweak it somewhat. I suggest the first thing is to worry about any copied text, because Wikipedia is very strict about that sort of thing. It's kinda hard but... you need to both a) have solid references supporting all the claims, but b) put it in your own words :-)

For general advice, see WP:FIRST - which has links to lots more detailed information.

Best of luck, 88.104.23.102 (talk) 18:14, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the tips. I've added a bit, reworded some of it, and added additional references. Is there anything else it needs? Any tips for further improvements? A P Monblat (talk) 20:55, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
(same person here; IP has changed)
That's great; seriously; much better, and better than about 99.9% of new articles.
You asked for tips, so here goes;
  • First suggestion is, clear this talkpage down. A lot of the stuff above is outdated and irrelevent, and doesn't look super-great; and this is your talk page. You could just delete the outdated stuff (that's perfectly OK!) or, maybe neater, create User talk:A P Monblat/Archive 1 and cut all the old stuff out, and paste it into there. (Archiving your talk can also be automated, but that's probably something for later).
  • New articles like Sutton armillary can be featured on the main page of wikipedia under "Did You Know". It's not as hard as it looks; Wikipedia:Did_you_know/Nomination. It only needs to be less than 7 days old, and at least 1500 characters of 'prose' (I think it might be a little short right now), and it needs good references. If your DYK attempt is successful, it'll appear on the main page of Wikipedia for hours, and thus be seen by many thousands of people :-)
  • Using 'citation' templates for references makes things look a lot nicer; I did a couple, see [1]. For the possibilities, see {{Citation}}
  • Try to wikilink relevent items...but don't over-do it. For example - I would remove the link to England from "Sutton in Greater London, England" because it's such a common term, and anyone clicking the "Sutton" link will see which country it is in; however, I would link Rotary Club.
  • You could add an 'infobox' - those boxes at the top right of lots of articles. I think the most appropriate is probably {{Sculpture}}. If you see the example there, you can basically fill in whatever info you can give about it. A nice touch is that, if you can give the geo coordinates, it'll automatically link to it on a map. An easy(ish) way to find them is, look at the article on Sutton, click where it has 'coordinates' (this), and look on Google Maps or something, to work out the exact coords of this piece.

...and this is probably a bit "information overload", so I'll stop now. Best of luck with everything though. remember, you can always get help with any problems. 88.104.23.102 (talk) 22:39, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for all these ideas, and for your vote of confidence in the article. A P Monblat (talk) 00:25, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
According to DYKcheck, the article stands at 1,459 characters.--Launchballer 07:29, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for checking this. I've added to the article, and put in sections and an infobox. I could not, however, do the coordinates - could you possibly do this when you get a minute? A P Monblat (talk) 11:21, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
I've just noticed that the coords are given in the citation from the Master Clock - Location: 51°21'43.16"N 0°11'33.95"W. A P Monblat (talk) 14:49, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Perfect. I just added the coords with this edit, and it looks good; if you click the coordinate on the top right of the article and choose e.g. "google maps' or whatever, it shows a location just off "Carlshalton Road", close to Sutton police station. Does that seem about right? 88.104.23.102 (talk) 16:45, 23 August 2014 (UTC) ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Thanks again. I've checked as well now - I am getting Trinity Sq, which is correct. (This is near Carshalton Rd as you say) A P Monblat (talk) 19:02, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Great. And glad to see you're using named citations too!
I suggest you submit it for DYK, because the process takes a while. It doesn't have to be 'perfect' or even exactly ready; when someone (eventually) checks it over, they'll tell u anything that needs fixing or improving, so you might as well get the ball rolling. You can continue to work on it, of course.
Also because it must be submitted within 7 days of creation. Once it's been submitted, time doesn't matter.
As regards further improvement - I often find it is helpful to look at a really high-quality article on a similar topic. Not that you'd expect to get it to that level, but it gives ideas, and if it's a "featured article" you can be fairly confident they're doing things in a really good way. In this case, I suggest you check Fountain of Time.
All the best, 88.104.23.102 (talk) 23:23, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks again. I have now done a DYK nom here A P Monblat (talk) 02:11, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Nomination of Sutton twin towns mural for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Sutton twin towns mural is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sutton twin towns mural until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Fram (talk) 09:48, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

I don't understand how this can one week be cleared for DYK and the next week be recommended by someone for deletion. A P Monblat (talk) 10:05, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
DYK, for some unclear reason, doesn't care about notability of the subject. If it is kept at AfD, it will still get its DYK moment though, it ha just been put on hold for now. Fram (talk) 10:20, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
How did this article come to your attention? Was it through the DYK process? Regarding sources, the fact that this artwork was put in place before the Internet had got into its stride, means there is less on the web than there might be if it had been more recent. Most of the articles would have appeared fairly shortly after the mural's installation A P Monblat (talk) 10:56, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I regularly check the articles which are bound to appear on the main page, mostly for problems with the hook (the DYK line on the main page), but also for lack of notability, copyright problems, ... I do the same with many new pages as well. It's nothing to do with you or the subject. Fram (talk) 14:22, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

A Dobos torte for you![edit]

Dobos cake (Gerbeaud Confectionery Budapest Hungary).jpg 7&6=thirteen () has given you a Dobos Torte to enjoy! Seven layers of fun because you deserve it.

To give a Dobos Torte and spread the WikiLove, just place {{subst:Dobos Torte}} on someone else's talkpage, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend.

7&6=thirteen () 14:15, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Many thanks, it was damn fine cake! A P Monblat (talk) 14:41, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
I created that template. Although I'd rather eat the Torte.
These notability discussions are becoming increasingly common at DYK queue 1. Sometimes they are silly, sometimes they aren't. But always they are aggravating. I just went through one, although based on the merits I don't know why. 7&6=thirteen () 14:53, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi! Even though the consensus is growing to "Keep" the article , there has been no "Result" until now of the discussion. The discussion is ongoing 1 and hence, the AfD cannot be deleted. 7Sidz (talk) 01:51, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

I tried to un-italicize the title, but it wouldn't work. Do you know how to do it? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:52, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi! I have added a couple of additional sources. I think the italics are the result of the use of an artwork infobox, and probably OK. A P Monblat (talk) 21:55, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi, I just noticed that someone promoted this to the prep area. The hook was never approved (although it is AGF), and I wonder what was the outcome of the deletion discussion on the image? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 19:21, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi there, two images were recommended for removal from Commons and were recently removed. They automatically came out of the article as a result, clearing the one remaining hurdle up. If you have the time, you might want to look at the latest comments on the article's talk page. I think my suggested course of action deals with the concerns. A P Monblat (talk) 19:36, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I'm leaving it be. Glad it's finally moving to the main page! Best, Yoninah (talk) 19:51, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
