Proposed deletion of Tilgate Formation[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article Tilgate Formation has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Tilgate Formation appears in index of 2nd edition dinosauria with reference to page 308, but there is no mention of Tilgate Formation on that page, just Tilgate Forest, so Tilgate Formation is merely a lapsus calami for Tilgate Forest

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Hi, Abyssal. I thought you might want to know about the above PROD, since you created the page. I investigated the claim, and I suspect that instead of a lapsus calami, what actually happened was a spellcheck error in the process of converting the book to an electronic version. Do you have a hard copy of The Dinosauria that you could check? - Gorthian (talk) 05:19, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Just a note to add that what made me suspect a spellcheck error is the phrase "discovered in the strata of Tilgate Forest" on page 737 in the Google Books version. The idea of a stratified forest struck me as most peculiar. - Gorthian (talk) 05:29, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Time Units[edit]

The ages in Dinosauria are very general, and a lot of more detailed start work has been done on major formations since the 2nd edition was published. In general though, things like Aptian-Albian are usually used to mean somewhere around the boundary or straddling the boundary, not ranging from early Aptian to late Albian. It can also mean the youngest sediments are Albian and oldest are Aptian, though you wouldn't be able to tell from this when in each stage they are, nor should just Aptian be taken to mean it spanned the entire stage. Listing stage alone is good to get general bearings but is next to useless for comparing formations. Dinoguy2 (talk) 16:23, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Locations of Mesozoic formations[edit]

You've been going great guns on creating Mesozoic-formation stubs (I came here from Khilok Formation), but I have a request. Please put in some information about where each formation is located: a region, a state, a country, anything! It will help de-orphanize some of the articles, and it would help greatly in categorizing. Thanks! - Gorthian (talk) 04:55, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Also, if you could tag the talk page with the WP:GEOLOGY banner, that would help out, too. - Gorthian (talk) 04:57, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Duplicate articles?[edit]

Hi, me again. You recently created Luohangdong Formation; but I think it's a misspelling of Luohandong Formation, which you created back in 2009. If I'm right, maybe you could just ask for a speedy delete of the mistaken one. If they really are separate formations, maybe a hatnote or two to disambiguate them? Cheers! - Gorthian (talk) 05:10, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, now I found Qiqu Formation and Qigu Formation, and I have the same questions. I don't have the background, or the references, to tease these out. - Gorthian (talk) 05:46, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

pagename[edit]

Hi Abyssal! I see you have been creating lots of article stubs using {{pagename}}, which puts your articles in the maintenance Category:Pages which use a template in place of a magic word. Could you replace each instance of {{pagename}} with {{subst:PAGENAME}}, so that the wiki will automatically convert the template to the actual page name? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:58, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Page is even worse. If there was a Rube Goldberg machine edit award, having {{#if:|{{PAGENAME:}}|{{PAGENAME}}}}[[Category:Pages which use a template in place of a magic word|PN00{{PAGENAME}}]] for the page's name almost takes the cake.
Here's the edit summary I did on multiple pages in case you didn't see them... Talk about a Rube Goldberg machine edit to just do the page's name. No flags per WP:MOSFLAG. Reference does not mention this formation. Give the exact page, not the home page. Bgwhite (talk) 04:49, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
@Bgwhite: In my tests, I found that using {{subst:pagename}} (lowercase), I got the mess, whereas {{subst:PAGENAME}} (uppercase) should be fine. Could you please confirm which you used? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 22:43, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
GoingBatty, yes, uppercase is answer. Bgwhite (talk) 22:46, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Lists of fossiliferous stratigraphic units in Europe[edit]

I was about to Prod the article until I saw your name. You need some text.. big map with nothing else tell me nothing. But the big problem, screen readers (aka blind) have a hard problem "seeing" anything via the map. Might want to change it to a list. Bgwhite (talk) 05:56, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

What kind of text do you think it needs? Surely a clickable map is better than a text list of links to articles, which can be found in the category of the same name anyway. Abyssal (talk) 10:30, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
To begin with, what in the world is a Fossiliferous stratigraphic unit? Without any text to tell what is going on, the map is no better that the template below. Bgwhite (talk) 17:35, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Schreyeralm Formation[edit]

I don't think that this is actually located in Germany. Both the Paleobiology Database & the Fossilworks link in-article state that this is actually an Austrian formation, while this paper mentions 'the Schreyeralm Limestone of the Northern Calcareous Alps,' which is both located in Austria & Germany. Are there any other sources about the location of this formation? Strangeday (talk) 20:44, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Regarding Richard A. Thulborn[edit]

Please consult WP:SCHOLAR before creating stubs about scientists (or any person), and make an effort to verify the living or dead status of the subject. Unless you have evidence to the contrary, or the subject was born more than a hundred years ago, always assume the subject is alive, per WP:BLP. You seem to have arbitrarily pulled Thulborn's name him out of a book he was mentioned in, making a biased article, and stating a fact that is insufficient to establish notability. I've added some broader context to give a fairer picture, and you're welcome to help expand the article, but from what I've found thus far there may not be enough significant secondary material to build a comprehensive biography. Cheers, --Animalparty-- (talk) 00:28, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

List of fossiliferous stratigraphic units in Kansas et al.[edit]

I have a question about the conventions for articles about geological/stratigraphic units. There seem to be some unusual usages (to my experience) and redundancies. I will only at this point discuss the List of fossiliferous stratigraphic units in Kansas and the Category:Geologic formations of Kansas as my familiarity is with Kansas Geology.

In the List of fossiliferous stratigraphic units in Kansas in particular I noticed listings of what seems to me to be redundant articles, which I think is owing to the unusual naming (which I may be wrong about):

Off the bat, the Admire Group is listed as Admire Formation; in the KGS literature I have read, this and all other groups are all called groups, not formations. Then, the Admire Group is given in your list with its constituent formations, which are shown (IMO correctly) with no “formation” qualifier, even though that is what they are.

There are three entries for the Foraker Limestone formation, but each link to the same page, which IMO is correctly titled without the formation qualifier in this instance. The article itself states that the Foraker is in Nebraska, but it neglects to also state that the formation is also in Kansas and Oklahoma. Moreover, some units like the Grenola Limestone formation are listed twice AND linked to two different articles; one placing it in Kansas and the other placing it in Oklahoma, when it is the same formation in both states (and in Nebraska, too). Then there are a number of actual members described as formations.

It is my observation that in general, that the qualifiers member and formation are commonly dropped; being used only when necessary to give context or when it has become conventional to call a particular unit by its member or formation qualifier, such as the Dakota or Ogallala.

I realize these are stubs, but I would like to contribute to the expansion of the Kansas articles. I imagine that at this point, I would be suggesting deletion/moves/renamings; so I would like to know the conventions for the group/formation/member article titles before I do. Surely, I am not the first to get hung up on this. If it is preferred to list groups and members as formations, please direct me to the relevant geology style guide or discussion.

My intended taxonomy would be the updated Classification of Rocks in Kansas and The National Geologic Map Database.

IveGoneAway (talk) 02:22, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Referring to National Geologic Map Database (Geolex), I note the listing of Admire as a Group in the relevant states (and not just in Nebraska). However, Geolex also shows that Admire is referenced in OK as both a Group and as a formation in another Group (Vanoss Group). It is easy to see that the units named Admire are the same stratus in both usages, but I am guessing that in certain Oklahoma locations, the unit has lost the characteristic subdivisions seen in Kansas that elevate it to a Group there. Again, let me know if there is any WP convention to apply here. IveGoneAway (talk) 02:03, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
