Bonus bridge


@Hafspajen: First is lovely, but camera wasn't quite good enough for FP - very soft at full res. Second a bit under minimum resolution, but if we could get it bigger, we should go for it. It's the left image of a triptych, so stitching might be enough. The third image appears to be a religious procession, probably Easter or a Saint Day. Resolution strikes again, though. WikiCup 2014 June newsletter[edit]

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to Florida 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. I'll have a look at that once the text is finished; balancing out the sections tends to be the harder part, and it's better to have FA images next to FA text if possible - and outside of what I used and maybe the Hilda Rix Nicholas lead image, FAs are a bit sparse on usable images this week, though. The fringes of The Fringes[edit]

Well, I gave it a (very quick) go, here. The only thing I'm not quite sure of is if you want to keep the OOF binding or not; I preferred the look without the big blurry area, but as you are scanner your opinion comes first. (As for how I did this: select by colour to get the whole background, invert selection, refine edge (gets a nice, non-jarring edge, with some feathering), cut and paste as a new layer, duplicate the background, paint that one black, and just refine the selection with the lasso tool set at Feathering=2). There are, of course, conventions in art - standard layouts, ways of identifying a character, conscious imitations of a famous work to make the reference clearer that eventually make the depiction even more the default. Scanning question[edit]

Question for you. I'm scanning a (reprint of a) 1930 poster for Dardanella's Dr Samsi, but I've got some bleedthrough from the following page in the book. Commons recommends putting black paper behind the page I'm scanning... does that work very well for you, when you scan works like Puck? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:48, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've actually worked with them before. Wikimedia Indonesia trained some of their staff in writing Wikipedia articles (results of the program include Djenar Maesa Ayu, Ahmad Tohari, and Armijn Pane), and I helped train those who were writing in English. They also sent a scan of a Poedjangga Baroe cover when I wrote that (they did the Indonesian version... originally).

Bonus picture

Well it is much better than the selfportrait as skull. And yes, it is a good portrait. It looks calm, centered, thoughfull - and interesting. It is like a portait of a man that had the genius of painting all those beautiful pictures. It is not just like, hey, today I will sitt down and paint a masterpiece. Good luck, try that, but it will not work. It doesn't work like that. Or you have it or you haven't.

No, where is that? And - why is this file File:Edouard Manet 004.jpg been superseded by File:Edouard Manet, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère.jpg + It has less pixels, 1,600 × 1,188 pixels. On the second point, I'm going to guess colours. Doesn't mean the superseded one is correct colours, though; a lot of people just decide that they should be fixed.
On the first point: The Library of Congress put scans of a lot of their content online. Hafs, this isn't about Coat. I generally just put everything into the list in chronological order, with the occasional exception for ones that are currently, say, sorting something out, or fairly obviously have no hope. Before we can deal with the situation with you and Coat, we need to deescalate it.
Opposing a nomination need not lead to rancour. I've spotted problems with Crisco's nominations before, and he with mine. But the key is to keep the focus on the image itself. "Oppose - it has a yellow cast, which I don't think is in the original." is fine. "Actually, it's not uncommon for images to get a yellow cast from varnish, and it's generally accepted that we'd prefer an exact representation of how it looks now for paintings." is fine. If I might suggest, how about you and Coat agree to only use simple, declarative sentences or simple questions about the image on each others' noms for a bit? It should help. Thanks for the ping. I've already discussed this editor with his mentor elsewhere and I don't think there is anything that I can offer further. That yellow cast didn't come from varnish but from digital processing. I made what was essentially your suggestion on my Talk page here. The editor's response was very far from constructive. I don't mean to come off critical, but I'm extremely confused on the blurb about the article. You state that it was a "mainstream film", it could be "deemed succesful", and it made "a small profit". The film was made on a budget of $45,000, was released in less than 30 theaters, and didn't even make $41,000 at the box office. The film lost money, was far from mainstream, and was not deemed successful, critically or financially. Why did you choose to describe the film this way? For the work on the Skelton photo! Have something which you might be interested in. In 1894, Southern Pacific brought out a new train from New Orleans to Los Angeles, the Sunset Limited. To promote the train, the company gave away die-cut "standees" of the locomotive and all the train's cars. Not sure if this was originally meant for children, but the railway got their "pitch" in on the back of each of the die-cuts. When these came up at eBay some time ago, I grabbed all of them and uploaded the largest files I was offered. We hope (talk) 22:21, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW, some sellers either won't ship outside of the US or charge horrible shipping costs to Canada because they don't want to fill out a declaration form. When the folks in SK have this problem, they send it to me and when we have enough for a shipment, I send it out through UPS.
