Alansohn, I agree that your arguments are valid. However, it was not a good idea to post complaints at the ANI. Doing so you invite sanctions against yourself. I do suggest that you stop discussion at WP:ANI immediately, simply because it does not help. I get a block for doing just that. On another occasion, I asked ANI to reconsider a long block for a very good content editor who had a kind of an emotional breakdown at some point. Instead they blocked this user indefinitely. What options do you have? Talk with other individual users including administrators about the problem, file an RfC about the user you complain about, use RS or BLP noticeboards, try mediation, or take a wikibreak. If you wish, I can sometimes visit pages you are editing and look what is going on...Biophys (talk) 22:42, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

(this diff) The only problem is that these remarks were not in any of the text added to the article. It may violate WP:SYN -- even if the conclusion is patently obvious to any reasonable person reading the article -- but it violates neither WP:BLP nor WP:LIBEL.     • You had already offered to intervene on the very current and very much unresolved issues at George Thomas Coker, which should hopefully lead to a conclusion on that issue. User:Relvse's decision to recuse himself from participation will also help in that matter. User:RedSpruce had been continuing with new wholesale reverts over the past few weeks, which he has acknowledged, again leading to a possible conclusion there. After much painful effort, the Dane Rauschenberg, has already reached a reasonably satisfactory conclusion. I'm not sure what other "old" disputes you could be referring to. New violations have occurred, and have been reported to the appropriate place at WP:ANI. If the issue is being addressed -- and even more so, if appropriate actions are taken by the user in question to stop the pattern of abuse -- there will be no reason for future reports.       • Okay, I went ahead and set one up with a 30-day (30d) cutoff, though you are welcome to adjust it to something else if you would like. It will probably kick in within the next 24 hours or so, and then recheck your page once a day and archive as needed. I told it to start archiving into /Archive 10, after which it will continue archiving until the archive page reaches a size of 75K, and then it will automatically move on to the next page in sequence. I could also set up an automated "archive box" for the top of your page, but they are pretty basic at this point (just numbers, no dates), so it's probably better to stick with the format that you've got now, and then just manually update it as each new page is created. Up to you though! If you want to see what an automatic archive box would look like, add {{archives|auto=yes}} to your page and preview (or check the top of my own talkpage, since that's what I use). Defunct Municipalities in New Jersey

First I'd like to thank you for getting Richard Arthur Norton (1958- )'s attention regarding the Van Nest - Weston Burial Ground in Manville. He wasn't responding to me.

Secondly, you created a category I appreciate called Defunct Municipalites of New Jersey. A user by the name of NE2 has created an array of categories entitled Former ____ of New Jersey. The blank can be filled in with cities, towns, townships, and villages. All of these categories are included in the Defunct Municipalities category you created. Yet, there are several problems. Most of the municpalities placed in the varying categories are not defunct, but have simply been renamed (from town to city or from borough to town, etc.) Moreover, truly defunct municipalites also appear in these new category pages, rather than as being truly defunct.

For example, East Millstone, a defunct municipality, is listed as being a "former town," alongside Flemington, a municipality which renamed its official title from town to borough. I find these categories to be highly problematic. I told NE2 about this, but he hasn't responded. I think he acted in good faith, but I see some problems here. I'm telling you because you created the initial defunct municipalities page.

Why won't you discuss the high property taxes of Teaneck?

I inserted it - you removed it.

Moreover, I inserted a very basic, fundamental fact that the Town would not like published but is true - that is, the Town does NOT supply garbage removal service - a core municipal government role - yet Teaneck though charging incredibly high property taxes doesn't offer this basic service.

Suggestion

Hi, I had an idea, which you are welcome to ignore, but I think it might help things move along a bit more smoothly at the Coker article. I know that you feel that you have a strong case on adding more information about the Hearts & Minds documentary, and you are absolutely correct that the information is well-sourced, and worthy of being included in the Wikipedia article, once we figure out the proper proportion. However, I've noticed that your main focus on the article, in the several months that you've been working on it, is on including that one bit of information, and little else. So, my suggestion is this: You seem to be a good researcher and a good writer... Would you be willing to spend some time trying to expand other sections of the article as well? If you were to expand non-controversial information about his military career, his medals, and so forth, it would help portray you as an editor who was more interested in improving the article as a whole (rather than just that one section), and I think that it would help decrease tension on the talkpage. Also, once other sections of the article were more fleshed out, it would be easier to expand the H&M section. For example, with enough extra information, there could easily be sections on "Military career", "Life as a POW", "Homecoming", "After Vietnam", etc. Just thought I'd toss that out there as a suggestion, Elonka 03:32, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

• My only interest in the article was that he had lived in New Jersey and I would have never touched the article again if I hadn't seen a link to a movie removed. I researched the film and reinserted it with one of the sources I had found, just trying to be a good editor adding a needed source. Why did you remove this from the Marlboro NJ Article

This is all 100% factual. It is in the news and merely states fact. Kindly explain why you removed this.

Due to a court ruling in NJ, All towns are required to accept low income housing. The willingness of Property Owners of the towns to accept this housing is not considered.

Famous First Facts

I see you have recently started an article on Famous First Facts. Apparently you have a copy on hand? The 2000 version I borrowed from the library the other day shows in item 2287 (page 109) that Columbus used Zacuto's table to predict an eclipse. Does it show also in your copy as such. There is a discussion on the Reference Desk/Humanities currently going on about this. I don't have a copy of Samuel Eliot Morison's Christopher Columbus, Mariner (1955) so can not verify the current reference that it was the Ephemeris of the German astronomer Regiomontanus. Chatham, Chatham Township, and The Chathams

I intend to sort out the Wikipedia confusion about Chatham and Chatham Township and to continue to feature their shared school and library systems separately by changing the titles to two of the related articles. The lack of clarity in our entries is confusing for our readers and I believe there is a simple fix.

The article now called Chatham, New Jersey should be about just that -- and the article about the shared school system and the library services being extended to Chatham Township should be changed to The Chathams. The Chatham Twonship article does not require any changes.

I have begun making edits to enable this change and to eliminate the confusion created in Wikipedia on the topics. Since you are a consistent contributor to the articles, knowing the objective of my edits should allay concern about the steps taken to complete the transition. No one calls Chatham, "Chatham Borough" and it never appears on maps or such as a name for the town. When the township is discussed it is as "Chatham Township", which is its name and which always appears on maps and such.

The use of borough, when related to Chatham is a discussion of its current governmental form -- not of the place. Chatham has a long history and has had several forms of government since 1710.

Chatham Township is governed as a township and it has never had any other form of government.

The government forms are well differentiated in other articles and I believe that there is no need to create such confusion to readers by emphasizing an issue that is discussed at length elsewhere.

Switching the title of Chatham, New Jersey -- back -- to the town, as it had been once, seems the only logical action to work toward. Replacing the title to the newer article about the two shared services to, "The Chathams", a name that is reflective of their --shared-- services and which was created by the two communities themselves to identify the combined services.

This will have to be made carefully to make all of the corrections to links, but it will be well worth the effort to eliminate the confusion to our readers.

Please discuss this with me if you have strong opinions against this, because I believe that your edits are valuable and we should be able to achieve consensus that benefits Wikipedia. 83d40m (talk) 13:36, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

I've done a lot of work on virtually every article for each of New Jersey's 566 municipalities. Most articles are straightforward in terms of title and content. But there are a few oddballs, and it's not just their existence but their solution that is problematic. Should "Township" be included in titles of municipalities that rarely use the term in common use, as I just saw suggested for Springfield Township, Union County, New Jersey, which does not commonly use "Township", whereas Springfield Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. There are many borough/township pairs (plus a few non-boroughs), and the question of how to distinguish between the two individual municipalities is often a challenge. For a mythical place called "Foo", we often have pairs of "Foo, New Jersey" and "Foo Township, New Jersey", sometimes supplemented by "The Foos, New Jersey". There are multiple pairs of "Foo Borough, New Jersey" / "Foo Township, New Jersey". The question being what does "Foo, New Jersey" refer to, the borough or the collective. For example, there is Borough of Princeton, New Jersey / Princeton Township, New Jersey for the two municipalities, with Princeton, New Jersey covering the collective. Often, sources are unclear as whether a person or place is from/in the borough or the township, which makes the "Princeton, New Jersey" article useful. In the case of Chatham, clearly the Township stays unchanged (as it almost always should). I agree on moving Chatham, New Jersey to The Chathams or The Chathams, New Jersey (joining The Amboys, The Brunswicks, The Caldwells, The Oranges, The Plainfields, The Ridgefields and The Wildwoods). The fit isn't perfect, but "The Chathams" is a term in use, as in the title of the school district. So what to do with the borough? I have been baffled and I think other people become confused by the absence of the "borough" as to whether the usually small municipality at the center of the pair is being referenced or the combined borough/township pair. Even the borough's web site refers to itself alternatively as "Borough of Chatham" (in several places in the title), "Chatham Borough" (in the opening words of the first paragraph) and as "Chatham" (perhaps referring to the pair). As the site states, "Chatham Borough and Chatham Township share a common heritage and both are often referred to by their shared name, Chatham." Thanks for your prompt reply -- I do think the solution I have planned is feasible, and it is returning to the older article formats for Chatham and Chatham Township which worked well for a long time -- as this arrangement works in many states and counties.

First, I will have to research all the links to the three changed pages that will have to be changed also, including the "borough" one that will be eliminated. It is a tangled mess now. Second, I will create an article for the school system and the library as The Chathams with all of the current data moved there. Once that is complete, I will make the transition of the Chatham, New Jersey article back to the town by moving all of its relevant data back to it. Once that is complete I will eliminate the Chatham Borough, New Jersey article and make it a redirect to Chatham, New Jersey.

This really is not so difficult to justify because there is no town of the township and it always has been differentiated clearly as Chatham Township on maps and in use through its history -- when it did contain distinct "towns" or "villages" such as Green Village, Bottle Hill, Chatham, etc.

Words need to retain their meanings in our articles, especially when people around the world read our articles and translations must be expected. Imagine trying to understand some of the Wikipedia articles that are full of slang and jargon if one is not a native speaker... imagine the garbled translations obtained through translation software!

I have begun new pages, but never made such a change to revert to a former identity after it has been usurped for another use as this one has recently. I will take it a step at a time, and I have limited time to work on it, so please be patient.

If you see any error in the logic of my plan, please advise... I'll look here for further discussion.

I have a page in creation right now that is almost ready to post and the Chatham issues will be next.

Zip Code Tabulation Areas (Census)

I noticed your comments on User:Nyttend's talk page about Census Zip Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTA) for helping with demographic data for communites. That's a great idea, one I may use for some unincorporated communities in North Dakota I'm researching. However, ZCTA's are inventions of the Census Bureau, and don't always correspond on a 1-to-1 basis with a US Postal Service Zip Code. So, data for a ZCTA will not always equal the data for a particular zip code, and should be used cautiously when attributing ZCTA data to a specific community. ZCTA's pick up the majority, but not all addresses in a particular zip, including people in rural areas that may not live "in the city." The ZCTA for Lefor, ND (58641) has an area of 82 square miles, but Lefor itself consists of just a few houses. Alan, didn't we go over this some time ago? Saying that Brielle is in the Fourth Congressional District and New Jersey's 11th Legislative District is obviously relevant to an article on Brielle. Going on and on, however, about details specific to those districts, is not. Those details belong in articles on those districts. Not in every article for every city party of them. What was [[10]] about? Teaneck definitely gets moderating effects from the ocean. Just compare it to Chicago. Also, according to the Koppen climate classification, Teaneck has a humid subtropical climate because the average temperature during the coldest month (January) is greater than 26.6F/-3C. I'm not one of the belief that all things need cited directly- especially something like this that is done en mass. But those are the three sources that I have. Since I'm trying to put this info on for all 435 members of the House, I obviously don't remember which ones came from which of those sites. But all are legitimate and you can find the information there. If you want to add a citation, then that does indeed make the site look better I'd say. Just don't change things because what I have written isn't exactly what's on on the other sites- for example, Congress.org or VoteSmart may list a member as only a "businessman", but if you look at their official website, you might see that they sold real estate, which leads me to list them as the more accurate "real estate agent".Mr. Vitale (talk) 18:19, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Well almost all of this information can be found directly on congessional websites- they'll usually talk of their college and working lives. And their residences can be found in the official house rolls. For myself, using Congress.org and Votesmart are a lot easier than scrolling through the crap on congressional websites (fidning useful info among the officials drumming up their record). Plural schools redirect to disambig links

Hi, Alansohn. I was wondering about this myself. My information is based on Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Links. There is a section on "Double disambiguation" (very tiny) and another on "Links to disambiguated topics" there but I have not found any policy that directly applies to this type of situation. Please correct me if I am overlooking something. The MoS is becoming a vast tome in and of itself. I think the changes are kosher. I decided to use the be bold policy and just made the pages. There is a reason for it: using these links makes some of the "see also" links much clearer in some school disambiguation pages. I also think that this change is valuable enough that if we do found some style guideline we should discuss it further before any reverts and maybe consider using the build the web and ignore all rules policies if not amending the style guidelines. The crux of the problem is that many of the high school disambiguation pages do not have "(disambiguation)" as part of their title and the disambig links are supposed to be the true name of the link. So when you use just "X high school" as a double redirect in the "see also" section it is more confusing than "X High Schools". The best way out is to have "(disambiguation)" as part of the title. But since few people are going to search for "X High School (disambiguation)" so we also need to handle the search terms. It therefore seems like the "true" solution would be to have "X High School" and maybe also my "X High Schools" always redirect to a page called "X High School (disambiguation)". I assume you're referring to a school entry I added. I put it in the Whippany, New Jersey article, because the school lists itself as being in Whippany. I have also added notables who have identified themselves as being from Whippany. I understand your issue, but I think it gives a bit of character to an article that is otherwise empty of it. Please realize that everyone in Hanover Twp identifies themselves as being in either Whippany or Cedar Knolls (there are separate post offices). But it is all part of the Township. It seems to me that for consistancy's sake, we should either use the Hanover page as the main article or populate all three pages (the Township plus Whippany and CK) with all of the relevant data which would be more difficult to maintain. New Jersey local government

Seeing you adding the link to City (New Jersey), I wondered: is there any article on a topic similar to Local government of New Jersey? Well, it's possible to have titles redirect to sections: Buffalo-Niagara-Cattaraugus, NY CSA goes to a lower section of Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. Do you think that would work? Or perhaps the statewide article could have small sections using the {{Main}} hatnote to refer readers to the existing articles on the various kinds of municipalities? I'd just really appreciate a good sourced article that could give a short explanation of the various types and forms of local government; as an Ohioan, who only has four kinds of local government (city, village, township, and the rare urban township), I find New Jersey's systems quite confusing without a single place to go to find them all discussed together. WikiCup 2012 May newsletter

We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Cwmhiraeth (submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Grapple X (submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Miyagawa (submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Casliber (submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.

This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, Muboshgu (submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. The Wikipedia standard for such lists is that the places have Wikipedia article and are accompanied by reliable and verifiable sources supporting the connection between the business and the place. Hello, you recently reverted some of my edits to the pages of the five career academies in the Monmouth County Vocational School District, e.g. here. The edit summaries read, "rv chg; the school (and the whole district) uses the software, but this doesn't add anything to the article, as evidenced by lack of coverage in independent sources." After reading Wikipedia:Notability, I think your reasoning is correct in that there should be independent sources, however notability within an article is not restricted, according to this section, except for lists. I tend to take a more conservative approach to reverting, knowing that Wikipedia is a work in progress, and will be that way permanently.

I'd like to explain my reasons for complaining about this. Many of the course descriptions of district schools, and various other information, are unsourced (see Biotechnology High School, Communications High School, High Technology High School), and could probably use the {{refimprove}} template. Unfortunately, the only good sources of information are the webpages for the schools themselves; you can see I used the page AAHS Courses of Study extensively on Academy of Allied Health and Science#Curriculum. Should this information be removed because no reliable third party source can be found? The absolute purist would expunge this material also. Despite being unsourced, this material was left in. Besides, I don't think the citation needed template could've been added to the edit that was reverted. Since notability is not an issue, since it does not pertain to content within articles (excluding lists), I think there's a pretty good argument for leaving that information in.

I have left the pages as they stand. Also, I made the same edit to Academy of Allied Health and Science and Monmouth County Vocational School District. I assume you had the best intent. Once a consensus is established, I will be willing to abide by it.

WikiCup 2012 June newsletter

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. Alan, please do not do blind, blanket reverts of articles, as you did here. Unless you can assert that all of my edits to that article were without merit, such reverts are completely inappropriate. The material you mentioned as having been removed was removed for good reason: Much information in the article was unsourced, and quite a number of the photos in the article were of poor quality, bore no relevance to the sections they were in, harbored only incidental relevance to the city's notability, and were so numerous that they violated WP:STACKING. In addition, you also undid all the other work I did to that article, fixing citation formatting, placement of fact tags; moving images to more relevant sections, a lot of copyediting (compare the passage on Kevin Smith in the In media section to what it looked like before, for example), and you even removed material that I added to the article with a source. Please examine the edits a bit more closely if you're going to revert them all.

To be fair, the aerial shot does make a better choice for the Infobox, and I missed the fact that passage about the ice boats in the Arts and culture section was indeed sourced, and not unsourced, as I mistakenly believed. Thanks for that. Nightscream (talk) 02:53, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Alan, there's a saying. When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

It's clear that you're lying about your edits, because you don't want to cop to what you did. If you undid all of my edits without distinguishing between the material you wished to restore with sources and the rest, then yes, it was indeed a blind revert, and that is indeed what you did. You did not, for example remove "some of my wording", nor did you fail to be "perfect" in retaining it, you removed all of it, and made zero effort at retaining any of it. That's clear from looking at the diffs. You tried your best to match my photo placements? Oh really? Which photos were those? Can you name one example? All one has to do is compare the version of the article before I started editing it to the the version saved after you undid all my edits to see that aside from the aerial shot placement (which was your change, not mine), the photo placement in both versions is identical. It's obvious you just hit the "Undo" button before making your own changes to the article. That's a blind revert. But if I'm wrong, then point to me a single instance of wording or photo replacement on my part that you retained. If you can't, then please don't engage in such mendacity. Two categories are listed, Category:Monmouth County, New Jersey and Category:Cities in New Jersey. Another example: Category:Clifton, New Jersey with categories Passaic County, New Jersey and Cities in New Jersey. So, why make the exception for Category:Summit, New Jersey? We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.

Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Why? The use of the past tense convinced me that the rain stopped in time to keep the event tonight, rather than pushing it off until tomorrow. I always hate those situations like Inauguration Day or when new legislators take office where there's a tendency for some people to place the event in the present when it didn't yet happen, even though there's every reason to believe that it will occur as scheduled. I'm still looking forward to attending, seeing 100,000 Jews in one place and feeling the rush in the audience when Bruce Springsteen comes on as the opening act and discloses that he really is Jewish after all and plays the distinctive chords of "Born to Run (to Shul in time for davening)". Regarding Galloway Townshipo

The deputy mayor DOES HAVE roles that benefit the township. He conducts the council meetings in the absence of the mayor and also has specific administrative functions and abilities within the township. In Galloway Township he heads numerous committees. Your claim that there isnt a function to the deputy mayor position is untrue.

As to your other concern, (and therefore township) is added as many people consider neighboring Hamilton Township to be larger. Also, many individuals do not know what the different types of municipalities are in the state of New Jrsey.

You seem to keep missing the subcategory entries at these categories: Category:Towns in New Jersey (you just removed Secaucus, NJ subcategory but left the other 7), Category:Townships in New Jersey by county (look at several pages having various subcategories where it says 2 C, 2 P, for example under the Townships in Hudson County category), Category:Boroughs in New Jersey by county and you recently removed all the subcategories in Category:Cities in New Jersey. What I would still want to ask is whether the source really goes into enough detail about him as an individual to really justify having a standalone article about him separate from the one about the show; while there's obviously always the perception that even one minimal source is sufficient to fork out a separate article, it's not always true that a single source is actually enough to establish that he's independently notable as a separate topic from the show as a whole.

Since you didn't actually provide the details about the specific source you have in mind, I do thus have to ask how much new content your one source can really support: is it really detailed enough to really justify a whole new article about him as a separate topic, or would a stickler for quality sourcing be more likely to suggest that it really only justifies one or two more sentences about him in the show's article?

If you had a dozen new sources that could support a really long and detailed article about him, I'd certainly unprotect without a second's hesitation — but if all we're talking about here is adding one single source to an otherwise entirely unsourced BLP, then that by itself isn't necessarily enough to warrant a standalone article. WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

1. Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
2. Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
3. Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
4. Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
5. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
6. Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
7. Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
8. Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), Ealdgyth (submissions), Calvin999 (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), The Bushranger (submissions) and 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.

Fort Lee, New Jersey

Hi Alansohn, I know that you are a respected editor here. I see that you removed my statement and reference about Fort Lee being described as New York City's sixth borough. Actually, if you look at the New York Times article, it says that "several" residents have described it that way, not just one. I believe I have heard this myself about Fort Lee. Would you have an objection to the statement being re-inserted somewhere in the article, and saying that "It has been described by residents..."? Also, the reason I put it in the lead is that I felt it described the borough's character as a whole and set the tone for the article, actually even more so than the statement about being the birth of the American film industry (which really could be placed in the History section, as an example). OK, I found this: http://www.northjersey.com/fortlee/Fort_Lee.html. I think this is a strong source, in conjunction with the other one. I'm just stumped where else to put a statement about Fort Lee's evolving cosmopolitanism, with this statement and these refs to support, other than the lead. From what I hear and read, this is the direction Fort Lee is clearly heading, and in a major way; I would think this is certainly as important to point out early on as historical artifacts about its early involvement with filmmaking (not to say that shouldn't be mentioned as well). Maybe as its own sentence in a second paragraph in the lead section? - just a thought. Where or what would your preference be?

Location maps

I've uploaded a new version of File:Location map of Somerset County, New Jersey.svg, in which the scale text is enlarged and the interstate highways are labeled. Thanks to your prompting on the production of this map, I've been generating similar maps for more Indiana counties, and have found that the highway labels help to increase the usefulness of the maps as long as they are not in the way of pushpin labels. Let me know if you have any further thoughts on these maps; I will probably go ahead and create the maps for the other New Jersey counties soon, since I'm in this mode. New Jersey Municipality Demographics

Every single California municipality in Wikipedia has in its Demographics section the numbers and percentages of same-sex couples and unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, as in an example I have copied below from Bakersfield, California.

"There were 111,132 households, out of which 51,995 (46.8%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 57,276 (51.5%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 18,049 (16.2%) had a female householder with no husband present, 7,829 (7.0%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 8,159 (7.3%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 845 (0.8%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. 21,800 households (19.6%) were made up of individuals and 7,354 (6.6%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.10. There were 83,154 families (74.8% of all households); the average family size was 3.56."

When another editor and I had worked on loading the 2010 Census data for New Jersey we had endeavored to match the data that had been loaded from the 2000 Census, which did not include information about same-sex couples and POSSLQs. I'm still working on this, but there are two issues. There is no standard template that's used nationwide. I worked with another editor to build a template for New Jersey that could be used nationwide but there is no national solution. The other part we worked on was downloading the data from the Census Bureau for all of New Jersey, another non-trivial task. Expanding the template is fairly easy, but I have had a hard time tracking down where all the fields are in the 2010 Census data. I looked at the article for Bakersfield and I'm not sure how the process was done for California. Let me assure you that I agree that this is a worthwhile task and that I will continue to work towards adding this information to the templates and to the articles. Hey Alan, sorry for the delayed response on this. Haven't had time to contribute in a while. The same-sex demographics are not part of the Census data proper, they are part of the American Community Survey. ACS is not asked to every household and is asked outside of the decennial census process. There is a ton of other ACS data that could be provided as well, and it is updated far more often than the census. Since it is not asked to every household, it introduces statistical error. We would have to include a +/- error figure and IMO it should not be confused with actual census data. It would be a big project to properly interpret and select ACS data for inclusion in articles. I think that is outside of scope. What do you think? I've got the county data in the spreadsheet now and will add it to the list of templates shortly. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 16:57, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

If it's not part of the census, why can't it just be mentioned as being part of the ACS data, mentioned between the 2010 and 2000 Census data? I think this issue would be a poor excuse not to include it. NJ Monthly Ratings of Schools

Hello Alansohn. As per your request, I am contacting you about the posting of NJ Monthly's schools rankings from NJ schools' Wikipedia pages. The NJ Monthly rankings and methodology are not well-established (it is a popular magazine, rather than a government report or recognized periodical within the field of school research), and I recommend avoiding their use as a public ranking. The methodology relies on NJ School Report Card data used without regard to context (e.g. schools that have only been open for 2-3 years being ranked low due to inadequate AP enrollment ... when obviously such a ranking fails to capture that the school is newly opened). I would appreciate if you could refrain from replacing the text if I have taken it down. No governmental agency in the state offers any system of ranking schools. While no rating system is perfect, the rankings offered by New Jersey Monthly magazine are widely reported on by other publications and are extensively used by many schools that appear high up in the rankings. That the school is new is clear from the article and I will be happy to insert an indication that the 2012 rankings are the first for the school. Depriving readers of relevant information from reliable and verifiable sources is never an effective way to deal with information of this kind. Alansohn (talk) 15:21, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

I believe the concern relative to this page is the extent to which the NJ Monthly rankings report analyses in error when addressing restructured schools. Admittedly, I can only speak for schools in Union County, NJ (with which I am more familiar than others), but the errors can be quite startling--a recent yearly report placed Elizabeth High School as No. 2 in the state by Washington Post and, at the same time, near the bottom by NJ Monthly. Clearly the ranking is lauded by schools by schools at the top of the ranking; despite it's flaws, it portrays the schools in a positive light. Your edits to Galloway Township, NJ

I am writing you as you yet again deleted my revisions to Galloway Township. Your insistence on adding the population changes in the introduction is totally unnecessary. This information is already included under the demographics section of the article and with you adding it, you are only repeating information. Also, an introduction is a broad overview, not an in depth detailed paragraph. The introduction needs to read as it does with my edit because many people confuse neighboring Hamilton Township as the largest municipality in the state. That is why (and therefore township) belongs in the introduction, the clarify which township is bigger. You also continuously delete the information next to the Township Manager (Arch Liston) for no reason. The date is included so it can serve as a reference point to those who view the article.

I see the information that you added to the info box on the right side of the article, although the information is a bit excessive, I will not delete it. I ask you to show the same courtesy to my edits. If you continue to undo my edits, I will keep on re-adding them. We went over this same issue a month ago, for some reason you decided it was time again to re do my edits. I have been a lifelong resident of this township, therefore I believe I know what I am doing to the article.

If you claim that I "own the article" then you are doing the same. And my residency is completely relevant as I am able to edit the article immediately. I keep fiddling with your edits as you keep fiddling with mine. Just because every other article on municipalities in New Jersey follows your pattern doesn't mean that this one does as well. This article (and every other one on municipalities) are entitled to be unique. They don't have to be part of a monopoly.

1. The deputy mayor is completely relevant as he leads numerous subcommittees in the township. Therefore he belongs in the info box. The deputy mayor also has numerous functions in the township in addition to heading committees and acting in the mayor's place. This position will remain in the info box as it is completely relevant.

2. You are correct, population trends are listed in every article. However, they don't belong in the introduction. Take an article about any community in the state of California, or on the city of Chicago and you will see that this information is not in the introduction, it is only in the demographics section. An introduction is a brief overview paragraph, not an in-depth and detailed paragraph. Just because they are in most articles only in the state of new jersey (but not any other state) isn't a reason to insist on putting in the introduction. that and the fact the information is too much and therefore unappealing to any reader.

3. The manager's hire date is indeed important as many people will need or will wish to reference it. Just because no other article has it does not constitute a reason as to why it should be on here.

4. "Galloway Township is the largest municipality (and therefore township) in the State of New Jersey" belongs in the introduction as people still claim that Hamilton Township is the largest township in New Jersey even when you put Galloway as the largest municipality in New Jersey. Therefore it is completely necessary to put it in the introduction. If you lived in the area you would be completely aware of this.

Overall, I am willing to work something out with you. I have not touched the rankings that you added into the info box even though they are a bit excessive. You are completely allowed to add any relevant information to the article, but undoing my edits without any justified reason is not acceptable. As I stated above, just because every article on municipalities in New Jersey follows your expectations does not constitute a reason that this one does as well. Articles on Wikipedia are entitled to be different from ones on a related topic. A great consensus would be to let my edits stand in the introduction in addition to the deputy mayor and manager while I let your info box edits on rankings stand. Please let me know.

Your suggestion that our dispute be resolved on WT:NJ is not appropriate as you are the founder of that page. The reason why I opened it on the Dispute Resolution Board is because there clearly would be no bias on that page. You also state that you are willing to accept a resolution. How is that when you have not even stated what contributions of mine you are willing to let stand!?!?!? As I have stated two or three times, I will let your unnecessary edits in the info box pertaining to rankings stand. As for you, what edits of mine are you willing to let stand? WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Sasata (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

Galloway Township, NJ Compromise

This is to notify you that I edited the article in order for it to be an appropriate compromise. The following was done for you:

1. Introduction: The wording on how Galloway Township is the largest municipality was edited to match what you wanted.

2. Township Manager: I deleted the date that he took office.

In return I ask the following of you:

1. Introduction: To keep the population changes out of the introduction paragraph as they are already greatly detailed in the demographics section.

2. Deputy Mayor: To keep the deputy mayor position in the info box. This position is extremely relevant in the Galloway Township article as the deputy mayor is given the same powers as mayor in Galloway Township under the township code.

This is likely the best compromise that we can both agree on. It is my hope that you will agree to it and leave the article as it currently is. If you have any further concerns please let me know.

GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! I would like to discuss the inclusion of the "incident" or "controversy" sections of the Bishop George Ahr High School Wikipedia page.

Regarding this article and its subsequent edits: First, thank you for removing the original post that included names (circa May 2012). This was a violation of NJ State law regarding the State information act and specifically how it relates to the treatment of minors. Thank you, again.

The information regarding the Bishop Ahr swim coach should not have its own heading, and should not be listed on the school's main page. It was the act of an individual who was not acting on behalf of the school. If I were to attempt to post references to recent sexual incidents at neighboring schools on their respective Wikipedia pages, I would be told that this is not the place for such things, and would be repremanded or possibly blocked.

New Jersey Municipality Demographics

Hi, it's been some time (months or so) since discussion about including same-sex and opposite-sex demographic data within New Jersey's demographics template for all NJ municipality articles, similarly to all California municipality articles. The discussion must be archived, but you had mentioned you would work on it and give an update. Just want to know, are you still working on it, or should I seek direction from another editor? Why bother?

This edit, not unlike the one described above or many other of your recent edits, added spaces in a header. These spaces add nothing for a reader of the article, who sees the title exactly the same way. Nor does it add anything for an editor looking at the article. Wikipedia's resources are wasted to handle and process an edit that adds nothing for no one, and for editors looking at the article who need to figure out what has been done to the article, our time is wasted trying to figure out why anyone would bother making an edit fgor no purpose whatsoever. My general rule is that I will only make purely cosmetic changes if I am also making some constructive edit to the same article. So many of the articles that you have edited would benefit from real improvements -- adding new material, adding / updating references or copyediting the text -- that any resources devoted to adding needless addition of spaces only adds to one's edit count but detracts from real opportunities to improve the encyclopedia. The title for the question is "Why bother?" and the first two words are "This edit" with a link to a specific edit. The question -- which involved connecting the title to the text -- is "why bother making edits, such as the specific one in question, that make purely cosmetic changes that are mostly or entirely invisible to anyone reading the article?" Hello. Sorry that it took me a while to reply. Sometimes, I make edits that are substantive. Sometimes, I make edits that are cosmetic. It depends on many different factors and whatever my agenda is at that time. Apparently, in the days to which you are referring, I had made a lot of cosmetic changes. Furthermore, I do not employ the same modus operandi that you employ. That is, I subscribe to a different editing philosophy than do you. Namely, I do not "wait" until I have a substantive edit to make, in order to proceed with a cosmetic edit. I will simply go ahead and reserve some time and effort to strictly cosmetic edits. Also, I am a strong believer that "blank white space" and "blank carriage returns" serve a very useful purpose within a Wikipedia article. I am aware that these do not appear to the reader. But, they do appear to the editor who is editing the article. And, having "blank white space" and "carriage returns" does indeed serve a purpose to the editing editor (as opposed to the reader). Since you seem knowledgeable, let me ask you. In less than 2 months, the two municipalities are to become one. Yet, very little is said of the merger. Is the township annexing the borough, or will the consolidated Princeton be given a new municipal title (like Town or Village or City) as per NJ municipal nomenclature?

Who will be the mayor of the united Princeton, the current township mayor, the current borough mayor, or will they have to elect a new mayor?

• I was just wading through the articles for both Princetons and I agree that the lack of public details is quite surprising given that the change will take effect in six weeks. The web site for Transition Task Force Consolidation of Princeton Borough & Township appears to have the most detailed information, but it seems that the most useful information is in articles linked on the media page. I hope this helps and I will continue to look for resources better documenting the municipal organizational details that muni-geeks like me (and fellow sufferers with the same symptoms) would appreciate. Neptunes

Cities that have the word "Township" in them are often referred to in shorthand without that word, which is why a reference in cited sources to "Neptune" probably refers to Neptune Township. North Bergen Township is another example. That latter word is indeed part of its name, but no one in NB or all of Hudson County, in the 40 years I've lived here, refers to it as "North Bergen Township". I doubt any significant number of them even know that that word is part of its official.

Conversely, cities that have the word "city" in their name are generally not, in my observation, referred to without that word. I've never heard Carson City, Nevada, Iowa City, Iowa, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, etc. referred to without the word "city". Another example, of course, is Union City, New Jersey and Union, New Jersey.

For this reason, I believe that references to to Neptune City in the sources are referring, of course, to that specific city, while those to "Neptune" are referring to Neptune Township, including Danny DeVito and Nicole Atkins, whose album, Neptune City, I believe, does not necessarily refer to where she's from. Rather, I removed the passage that asserted this, in part because the cited source doesn't reference her album, or the derivation of its name. The passage appeared to be an assumption; Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, after all, are not from Philadelphia, New York City or San Francisco, respectively, despite singing songs with whose titles reference those cites. The main reason I think Atkins from Neptune Township is because two of the three sources cited for her residence both refer to merely "Neptune". While one of them does say "Neptune City", I think this is a mistake, because in one of the first two, Atkins is quoted herself saying "Neptune". Just as I never refer to my home town of Union City as "Union", I don't think she'd refer to her home as "Neptune" if she were from Neptune City. Some of this is admittedly guesswork and surmising, but most of it is based on sourcing and I think reasonable interpretations thereof. Let me know if you're okay with this. GOCE November drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November. Remember that we are supposed to make links that are relevant to the context; it's just like linking years in articles about dates. To quote WP:OVERLINK, the name of the country in which a place is located is "particularly relevant to the topic of the article" when the article is about a place. I just quoted you one bit of support; as I already told you, the country in which a place is located is highly relevant to that place. By your logic, we shouldn't link to the United States anywhere, because the country is just as relevant to the locality as it is to the state. You've provided as good an argument for removing the link from New Jersey as you have from this article: if we mustn't link it from the municipality, it's not appropriate to link it from the state, either. Moreover, note that the vast majority of US place articles have linked to the country since early in their histories (before they did, they generally didn't mention the country at all); because policies follow common practices, the vast majority of pages of a certain type cannot be at variance with policies that are derived from community consensus. In that discussion—you know the one I think—you recently stated that "Good Olfactory could have asked uninvolved admins to investigate the suspected sockpuppet in early December". The discussion is closed now, but I just wanted to let you know that I did do so shortly after my question was posted at User talk:Buck Winston. I contacted several admins via email who I thought were investigating the issue and I shared my vague suspicions. At that stage I had seen very few of Buck Winston's edits. Anyway, I also did some work for them comparing historical edits using some tools. Just thought you'd like to know that it wasn't exactly how you presented it. (Or maybe not!—Whatever!) Alan, about a year ago...

I got into long debates with more experienced Wikipedians about the whole issue of quoting. And they kind of persuaded me to try to keep quotes short and sweet. It didn't matter much whether the quotes were in the "quote" section of a reference; the idea was to try, as best we can, to respect copyrighted material, and I have come around to accepting their way of looking at things. That is, Wikipedia could possibly take a NY Times article, and quote it verbatim, at length, and publish it for everybody -- but you might see how this is ripping them off in a way, since they worked hard to get the information, and hope that they have a right to publish it, and make money from it. And we can quote it provided that we use just the minimal amount necessary. So, just a-saying.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 22:40, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Township??

I'm curious as to why a self-proclaimed "munigeek" would deliberately mislead readers by labeling the newly-created Princeton as a township when it's actually a borough. Yes, you linked it to borough, but you wrote in township. Misleading and inappropriate. Some people may be confused by nomenclature. True, the new borough is not the same entity as the old borough, as the old borough and township were dissolved and superseded. However, it is a borough nonetheless.

Now, what's the plan for the old borough and township articles? I feel that the two old articles should be kept but they should be gutted and be no more than a paragraph explaining that they ceased to exist Jan 1, 2013, and contain the final census info. That seems to be the protocol with other former municipalities, like Pahaquarry and Island Beach.

Also, can someone upload a new map on the Princeton page that shows the newly-formed borough instead of the old township? Thanks. 98.221.141.21 (talk) 06:15, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

When I updated the article for Princeton, New Jersey, I had copied in the settlement infobox and lead paragraph from the article for Princeton Township, New Jersey, carefully correcting all of the mentions of "township" to "borough". Unfortunately, I missed one. The situation is already confusing enough, and my error didn't help even if it was quickly corrected. I agree that the articles for the former borough and township should remain using the model of Pahaquarry, Island Beach and many other such defunct municipalities. A discussion regarding a possible merge of these articles is underway at Talk:Princeton, New Jersey. I have received some assistance from a map geek in the recent past and I will ask for a new map, though, in retrospect, a map that shows the outlines of the former township surrounding the former borough does provide useful information to readers that does include the borders of the new consolidated municipality. I hope I didn't come off as too confrontational, it was an honest question. One more thing on the maps. I agree the old maps are useful and should indeed be kept in the old articles. While a map showing the former municipalities might seem informational in the new article, I think the convention with other municipalities is to show the map of the current municipality as it exists. The new year always brings a crop of changes, but the added details of the Princeton merge have been quite challenging. I saw you chimed in on the merge of the articles, and we will be able to beef up the new Princeton article and trim the old borough and township articles in the ensuing days and weeks. I followed up on your view that Category:American actresses should be recreated as expressed at CfD. Someone has now tried to do a speedy delete on the category. I have contested the speedy deletion. A new speedy request has been put up, where they seem to be implying I should have tried to get the deletion overturned. They might have a point, but I figured since we were more than a month removed from the deletion, just recreating the category was the easiest move. I am still trying to figure out how it is problematic to create a clealry acceptable subcategory of Category:Actresses by nationality when a CfD just closed saying that Category:Actresses by nationality was an acceptable category. pbp is really getting on my nerves, and I am trying to avoid getting into a needless fight with him. Vineland Borough and Consistency

Since the Princeton consolidation is the first merger since Vineland Borough and Landis Township in 1952, and since the consensus seems to be to keep the articles for both of the former Princetons, then shouldn't Vineland Borough get its own article, just as Landis Township has its own?

I understand much of the history is covered in the current article for Vineland City, but since Vineland City is not the continuation of the borough, but rather a consolidation of the now-defunct borough and Landis township, shouldn't there be a short article for the borough alone? As in, "Vineland Borough was a borough that existed from 1880 until its consolidation with Landis Twp to form the City of Vineland"?

There's no rush, just something to think about as the details are hammered out with the Princeton situation in the coming weeks. I'm asking you because I saw that you created the Landis Twp. article. 98.221.141.21 (talk) 06:42, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

The analysis is correct and the changes have been made. See Vineland Borough, New Jersey. I also added some population statistics for Landis Township, New Jersey and reflected in the Landis Township and Vineland, New Jersey articles that the 1952 merger combined Landis Township and Vineland Borough to form Vineland City, more accurately corresponding to the planned retention of slimmed-down (but not gutted) articles for Princeton Borough and Princeton Township. Drew University cleanup

There was discussion at Talk:Drew University about creating a unified category for faculty, alumni, and university presidents. I see no advantage of having a separate category for each one. DavidinNJ (talk) 22:49, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Alansohn, I think all we can do is re-categorize the articles individually. We could use a bot to merge all the articles into the alumni category and then weed out the faculty articles (or do it vice versa), but I'm not sure if that would save any time or not?
