Sir John Horsey

Thanks for this fantastic article :). I've moved it to just John Horsey; we have a rule about not sticking titles like "sir" at the beginning of article names. Have you considered seeing if you can expand it a bit and then sending it to WP:DYK? Ironholds (talk) 10:37, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

1,500 characters of prose, not words :). It is currently at 1263. Do you have access to the Oxford Dictionary of National biography? It has information on his father (also Sir John Horsey) son (the same) and grandson (the same) which could act as quite a good DYK hook: Did you know... that Sir John Horsey had the same name with his father, son and grandson? In fact (and this might be a stretch) we could try and write articles on all of them and have a DYK with four subjects. Ironholds (talk) 12:10, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

FWIW, I've now renamed the article 'John Horsey III', and have written another article on his father 'John Horsey II'. Not sure whether these qualify for WP:DYK, though I think the new article is easily the right length... Alfietucker (talk) 20:23, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

The new article is fine, but there is a problem with the references in both articles. Most of them are from genealogy forums and posts, which is a problem because the info was gathered by amateurs and therefore probably fails WP:RS. I'll try and replace the refs with those from the ODNB (the definitive reliable source) where possible and, with your permission, submit it to DYK. In future I'd advise avoiding forums and genealogy sites at all costs; they aren't considered reliable 99 percent of the time. Ironholds (talk) 21:54, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. Erm, not sure whether you mean 'did you do a lot of work on the Horsey articles?': the answer is I knew just a bit about the family, but I spent maybe 2-3 hours at the most researching them - mostly on the internet (there is also a family tree I consulted, but that's not published) - for those articles; or 'do you write these kinds of articles outside Wikipedia?' (no: professionally I write mostly about music, so my interest in the Horseys is purely amateur). Anyway, I'm very touched by the interest you and Shimgray have shown in these budding articles. • Marvellous articles, but I'm a little concerned with the names of these - using "II" and "III" seems rather unusual for a sixteenth-century knight, if not faintly anachronistic. The DNB only seems to use it in a "disambiguating" sense - in square brackets in the names - and in running text they use things like "the younger Sir John". Would you mind if I moved them to things like, say, John Horsey (d. 1564)? This way we avoid giving the impression it's their actual names... Shimgray | talk | 10:48, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Quite sure - you can see what remains of the original Tudor mansion of Clifton Maybank standing today; quite a sizeable building still, though with one facade that was added at the beginning of the 20th century Alfietucker (talk) 16:31, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. I have added my argument for not calling Rachmaninoff a "Russian-American composer" on the talk page, and have shunted the info about his citizenship - a step made less than two months before his death and years after he had ceased composing - into an appropriate spot in the article. Michael Jaffe

The Independent source does specify 'Yeovil' as his place of death (see the potted biblio at the bottom of the obit). I realise this might be 'newspaperese' for Clifton Maybank itself, but equally he could have died in Yeovil Hospital, say.
