--LezFraniak (talk) 14:43, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Leonard Michaels photo

Thanks for approving my request! One tiny thing, though, the Facebook page still shows a flag (standard unspecified page logo) instead of his photo. Any idea how that can be fixed? It's linked to the wiki page, but doesn't show the photo like it's supposed to. I'd be very grateful for any help. I'm Aumurto, by the way. (http://www.facebook.com/aumurto.chaudhury) P.S. I wish I knew how to give you a Barnstar, but I don't. Sorry. I owe you! Hey - are you the person who wrote this paper? If so, I never knew he was on WP - sorry for the late notice! You may have already come across the BW equations article, but if not the WP article cites that paper, just thought to let you know. Feel free to edit by all means. It is one of the few papers I've ever seen clearly state the generalized gamma matrices used for describing spin fields. Best regards! M∧Ŝc2ħεИτlk 12:44, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2013 March newsletter

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate London Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's New South Wales Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.

Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr (Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare (Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus (Alaska Keilana (submissions) and New South Wales Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John (Indiana Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.

Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.

A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Just a heads up: I do agree with the whitelisting request, and I would even be favourable to requests to de-list it on meta. However, the casino-review.org site is not a redirect .. it was plain affiliate spam (which I could not revert due to your subsequent edit .. :-( ). I've meta-blacklisted the latter, removed it from en.wikipedia (including using an intermediate whitelist to be able to do so), and replied to the whitelist request. FC report (April)

Hi, I saw that you wrote this week's featured content report for the Signpost. EUROCITIES logo change request

If the problem was the low quality of the logo you could have asked for a better quality instead of declining the request immediately! — Preceding unsigned comment added by EUROCITIESbrussels (talkcontribs) 10:31, 16 April 2013‎

I don't think so. Most of the time a request with a higher quality image isn't made. Also the fact that the image was declined doesn't mean, that you can't make another request. Armbrust The Homunculus 06:31, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Category help

Hi Armbrust, I put SIMPOL in Category:Political campaigns - it showed up in the upper section (subcategories) instead of lower part (categories). I'm very new to all this (and not too clever) therefore I'm not surprised that I made a mistake - many apologies for you needing to put a question mark on it (it can be deleted by the way). I have now put International Simultaneous Policy Organization into the category section there instead - I know how I was able to put it there; but please can you tell me how I put SIMPOL as a subcategory (so that I don't do it again and cause work for others). Many thanks for your time. Best wishes, Richard — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fountain Posters (talkcontribs) 20:50, 19 April 2013

You put the Category:SIMPOL page in the category instead of International Simultaneous Policy Organization. As the former is a category it appeared at the right place. For more information on categorizing pages see: Wikipedia:Categorization. Armbrust The Homunculus 21:04, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 2 weeks for your disruption caused by edit warring and violation of the three-revert rule at 2013 World Snooker Championship. During a dispute, you should first try to discuss controversial changes and seek consensus. If that proves unsuccessful you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection. If you would like to be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Bbb23 (talk) 01:43, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't get it Armbrust. You do so much great work and are a real help in numerous administrative areas, but you don't seem to be able to restrain yourself from edit warring. I felt so bad when I accidently blocked you two years ago, now that block is just the beginning of a very long record of actual valid blocks for edit warring again and again in the same topic area. When this block expires I would strongly suggest you simply topic ban yourself from the world snooker championship articles. Nobody wants to see a user who does so much great work get thrown out for good, but eventually that is what will happen if you can't find a way to avoid these edit wars. Snooker Q School 2013 Event 2

;) Was genau bedeutet den "kl."? Hi, Armbrust. Adding nowrap to this breaks Portal:Featured content for me. I do not think having to scroll the whole page is better than a wrapped title. Don't assume such fixed formatting works just because it works for your particular setup. I am talking about 23rd Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Kama (2nd Croatian). 80.132.77.140 (talk) 14:24, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but I don't know what you mean. {{Nowrap}} can't break the table in any way. Armbrust The Homunculus 14:26, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well it makes the first column take up as much space as it needs to display the title unwrapped (say 90% of the page width). The remaining columns try to squeeze in the remaining 10 % but they can't get narrower than the longest word in them. So in effect the table overshoots and one has to scroll. This has to happen if there is really not enough space but nowrap forces it unnecessarily. 80.132.77.140 (talk) 16:45, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's unfortunate, but to achieve the result you describe someone needs a monitor with a resolution less than 1024x768. Per Wikipedia:ACCESS#Resolution: "The lowest resolution that it is considered possible to support without adversely affecting other users is 1024×768". It looks just okay at that resolution. See there. Armbrust The Homunculus 18:01, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well it's not just screen resolution but also font size etc. And I would not complain if there was a good reason for the nowrap. Do you really think it's that bad to have the title wrapped ? Regardless of screen/font size it also makes the width of the columns unequal (they are supposed to be 33% each). 80.132.77.140 (talk) 18:16, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you would add such long titles with nowrap to all 3 columns you could make it overshot even on 2560x1600. 80.132.77.140 (talk) 18:21, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think it is. Every list should contain 15 items, but the wrapping of a line has caused many confusion on the page, and the wrapped line was seen as 2 item. There is also no rule, that says they had to be 33% each. To your last point, that's the exact reason, why the Featured Lists columns is in the second row. The promotion of Featured Topics and Featured Portals is very rare nowadays. Armbrust The Homunculus 18:31, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's what the bullets are for. All that fiddling with fixed formats is futile I think, there will be the next case when it breaks. It's also not required because Wikipedia isn't a "stylish" website anyway. As to the 33% the code says style="width:33%;. Has this already been discussed somewhere ? 80.132.77.140 (talk) 18:41, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But only for people with a monitor resolution of less than 1024×768, and according to Wikipedia:ACCESS#Resolution these don't need to be considered. Also the style="width:33%; code is also there in the second row, but there is no third empty column. BTW the WP:MOS contradicts your assessment, that "Wikipedia isn't a "stylish" website". Armbrust The Homunculus 18:48, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I don't agree, but thank you for explaining your view. This particular item isn't very important. Where do you think this point could be discussed in general ? 80.132.77.140 (talk) 18:54, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Everything that's related to this template should be discussed on it's talk page, there. Armbrust The Homunculus 19:13, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Armbrust. I'd like to formally ask you to take the FA section of the FC report and make it yours, just like Pine does with the FP part. I'll be very busy from now on and I won't be able to do both the FL and FA parts of the report. So, I'll make the FL part, you do the FA part, and Pine does the FP part. Pine and I will handle the special reports and interviews, though if you have one, we'd be glad to publish it too :) I'd also like to give you my words of appreciation for all the help you've been doing. I deeply thank you for all your efforts, and for backing me up when I was unable to finish the work. Thank you! — ΛΧΣ21 03:47, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have not missed it, was just a bit busy this week. Armbrust The Homunculus 06:52, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We were thinking of just having you write the FA section, not the entire FC report as you wrote this week although I appreciate your initiative. That's ok with me this week though, I can use some time for other things. --Pine 19:28, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Im Zeizplan steht: "The Australian wildcards 1 and 2 will play two players selected at random from the lowest 16 seeded qualifiers". Armbrust The Homunculus 08:25, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

ArmbrustBot & CFDs

Hi, is ArmbrustBot still processing CFD outcomes? The regular bot has been down all day and a backlog is piling up. Timrollpickering (talk) 22:00, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Of course. It just has to be activated manually. Will do in a moment. Armbrust The Homunculus 22:02, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Bot activated...... For now it works the CFDS nominations until African Commissioners. After it finished I will add the others too. Armbrust The Homunculus 22:06, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Backlog cleared, new categories created and old ones nominated for deletion. Armbrust The Homunculus 02:46, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We have a bunch of speedy renames to clear through in the next few hours, it would be great if we could have the bot working on these, since Cydebot seems to be on strike. I've added some, but there are several hundred more to be listed today at WP:CFDW. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:07, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done for now. Created target categories. The remaining ones are IMO waiting in the job queue. Armbrust The Homunculus 03:54, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I was referring to the categories listed here. Are these the ones in the bot's queue? The only targets created for those ones are the ones Vegaswikian and I have done manually. I saw you were creating some manually. Can the bot not do this—this is really all we need it to do, since these categories are populated by templates and there are really no contents for the bot to "move". Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:20, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately the bot can only recategorise pages using the AutoWikiBrowsers CFD module, it can't create the new categories. I'm afraid it has to be done manually. Armbrust The Homunculus 05:39, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! I see. That makes sense. Thanks for the work you and the bot did do on the other ones! We'll try to get Cydebot up and running for these other ones. Good Ol’factory (talk) 06:02, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers!

Just wanted to say cheers for your diligence, patience and hardwork in closing noms over at FPC, especially in light of the recent set of 47. I know it's thankless, dull and sometimes controversial work. Cowtowner (talk) 03:37, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, the 47 image set nomination. I already made every step in the closure of that on Friday, and than saved in on my computer. Armbrust The Homunculus 06:24, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Subcategories

Armbrust, will you please take a look at this edit and tell me if it's correct? It looks redundant to me, but I don't know much about categorization, so can you let me know if the article should belong to both Category:Snooker world rankings and Category:Sports world rankings. Betty Logan (talk) 19:38, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WP:EPON says that's one of the possible options: "Keep both the eponymous category and the main article in the parent category." However it also says, that the best solution should be decided "by consensus for each category tree". However I think the 3rd option is the best in this case. Armbrust The Homunculus 19:54, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Armbrust The Homunculus 11:25, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
--LezFraniak (talk) 12:31, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

TemplateData

Hey Armbrust

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:25, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I already have tested VisualEditor, and I didn't like it at all. Armbrust The Homunculus 08:29, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Poland Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and Canada Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. We are currently seeing concern about the amount of time people have to wait for reviews, especially at GAC- if you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

Armbrust The Homunculus 13:19, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FC report (July)

Hey Armbrust :) How are you? I'd like to know if you could back me up at the FC report this next two weeks, given that I would like to dedicate myself to take some of my projects to FAC. I can do the FL part and Pine will handle, as usual, the pictures, but I need you to help me with the featured articles, if you can. Cheers! — ΛΧΣ21 02:07, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hungarian help needed

Hello Gábor, I'm contacting you because we need some Hungarian translators to help with the deployment of the new VisualEditor on hu.wikipedia. There are help pages, user guides, and description pages that need translating, as well as the interface itself. The translating work is going on over on MediaWiki: Translation Central. I also need help with a personal message for the Hungarian Wikipedians. If you are able to help in any way, either reply here, or head over to TranslationCentral. Thanks for your time, PEarley (WMF) (talk) 01:14, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but I dislike this new feature, and therefore won't help with any translation about it. Armbrust The Homunculus 18:12, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, thanks for the reply. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 20:07, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Requests for Closure

Hello Armbrust, In case you haven't come across me before, I'm a reviewer and rollbacker here on Wikipedia. I've been working at settling disputes and bringing closure to other disputes for as long as I have had these tools, but your incentive for earning an award is one that I'd like to take you up on. Shall I begin and let you know when I've completed the incentive? DarthBotto talkcont 11:37, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Multi-sport events – amateur events?

Per this edit I saw that you think multi-sport events are counted as amateur events. Then also the World Games would be an amateur event and the winners Bjorn Haneveer, Gerard Greene and Nigel Bond have it as non-ranking in their articles. --BlueFire10 Let's talkabout my edits? 12:48, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Updating template links

Thanks for fixing backlinks to Category:Politicians of Silesian Voivodeship (1920–1939). Did you have to do null edits on all the pages with template:Silesia topics? Is there a tool to do so quickly? – Fayenatic London 11:56, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, made many null edits. I use AWB to make them, and it's relatively quick. Armbrust The Homunculus 16:59, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks. Wish there was a version of AWB that worked on Mac OS. – Fayenatic London 20:28, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A nod of thanks, and a teensy request for help

Hey Armbrust, I took inspiration from your user page and used it to help create mine. You seem quite handy with the code; can you help me figure out how to get overflow to work on my barnstars section? I want it to scroll so it doesn't take up too much space. The only examples I can find of how overflow works seems to require a substantial change, and I didn't want to deviate too much from your style. Any ideas? Thanks! Julia\talk 21:47, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to answer this late, but somehow I missed this section. I have found a possible solution, but it only works if you move the Barnstars to a subpage. If you move them to User:Julia W/Barnstars, than replace the current content with {{Scroll box|height=600px|width=100%|{{User:Julia W/Barnstars}}}}. WikiCup 2013 July newsletter

We're halfway through this year's penultimate round, and the competition is moving along well. Pool A's Canada Sasata (submissions) currently leads overall, while Pool B's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) is second. Both leaders are WikiCup veterans, and both have already scored over 600 points this month. If the round were to end today, London Miyagawa (submissions), with 274 points, would be the lowest-scoring participant to make it through. This indicates that participants will need a score comparable to last year's (573, the highest ever) to qualify for the final. The high scores this year are a testament both to the quality of participants and to the increased focus on significant content (eligible for bonus points) in this year's competition. So far this round, both Sasata and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) have made up over half of their score through bonus points, with, for example, high importance FA koala earning Sasata a total of 440 points (from a multiplier of 4.4) and high-importance GA sea earning Cwmhiraeth a total of 216 points (from a multiplier of 7.2). Other articles on important topics submitted this round include a featured article on the Norman conquest of England by Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), and good articles on Nobel laureate in literature Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate in physics Hans Bethe, and the noted Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryū. These articles are by Poland Piotrus (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) and Sturmvogel_66 respectively.

Other than that, there is not much to report! If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs!
