  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation[edit]

The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page!

The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there!

Head of the church[edit]

Hi. When you set up the discussion at Wikipedia:Neutral point of view/Noticeboard, did that automatically notify all members of Project Christianity? Hi again. Thanks for all the good suggestions and questions on the notice board, by the way. I'm hoping developments there might help to allay any fears there might be about dealing with an Orthodox point of view. I'm afraid there's too much history of hostility, and I'm determined not to carry any within myself, much less display any. But (generally) after things have been touchy, I have found it is better to be absolutely clear, certain, and explicit about agreement, so that no one can claim later that it was otherwise, or that there was no opportunity to discuss. ColonelHenry has retreated, which is his/her right, but if s/he wants to have a say in what's POV or not, now is the time, and it will have to be WP:CIV too. The community decision needs to stand clearly in public view now, so it's more difficult to try to re-open later. The proposal is useful stuff for actually dealing with the POV in the articles, but the recognition of POV is an important separate point that the whole of Project Christianity needs to deal with, and in an adult manner.

I've been around about 7 months now, and I've contributed a number of places outside the Christianity arena, but this is the only place I've encountered hostilities. In fact, on other articles, I'm welcomed and other editors have engaged in whatever issue I brought up, and something constructive was accomplished. I've identified myself as Orthodox from the start, and have never encountered the same general atmosphere in Christianity. It's full of suspicion and rivalries, some of which I've simply watched happen among others, and it's not just Catholic-Orthodox. If I have one agenda here, it's to do what I can to soothe and quiet that stuff down. Now I'm not a good natural soother, but a technique of directness about my point of view and careful respect shown for other points of view, combined with really making agreements explicit, all make for an awareness: "this one's not trying keep secrets or be tricky", which can be pretty soothing in itself.

So, that's what I'm doing with with my latest call to agreement about the POV issue. What we've got is some support for POV, plus silence. It's the silence that bothers me. If it isn't answered by opponents now, they'll be on record as not having answered, which amounts to saying there was no need. On top of that, it's the matter of POV that sent this issue to the current noticeboard. I have thought that if POV could be really closed, that it might be appropriate to take the rest of the work back over to the Project Christianity page where it most properly belongs. That would even highlight that there are two pieces of work that have had to be dealt with to settle just the one issue.

I wouldn't say that this is all maneuvering, but more a matter of keeping separate matters separate. The proposal is still something that can safely be ignored until the POV is firm. After POV, there is no choice but to modify the articles. It's either some sort of proposal wording, or else simple removal of the "head". And so far, there's been no engagement on any proposal except for us. So I'm not counting any chickens yet.

Yea, people often resist change when it comes to controversial revisions, it happens. I think moving it back to WP:Christianity is an okay idea but people might get annoyed that it keeps switching. I wouldn't move it back until full POV agreement is registered. That can't happen right away, anyway. And I wouldn't want to move it if it would annoy anyone. If anything, I was thinking it might annoy to have what is basically a Christianity question that is no longer a POV issue staying where it is. But I'm fine as is, if you are. As for "resist change", that's a crux here. And it's two BIG changes. First, acceptance of "head" as POV, which is especially tough because of some incorrect notions that have gained traction around application of WP:RS, and second, with the idea of having Orthodox participants enter an arena that Catholics have mis-identified as their own, which is really another POV. Now truly, Catholics are not the adversary here; only perhaps one, so no need to paint anyone else (and don't write that one off either). I think there's a bigger POV issue floating around Project Christianity, which is quite simply secularism. And if we want to talk group allegiances, the Catholics are natural allies. That also goes whenever any Protestant POV shows up. I can't think of another project where POV is so likely to turn up, from so many sources, and where it needs to be handled with more care and mutual respect. But that makes for a good opportunity to put Christianity into practice. Reconciliation is the theme: finding out that the other guy is not so bad after all. The hardest work is just getting there. And we can be a part of it in this odd wide microcosm. I sure won't change the world; no ambition that way anyway. But I intend to grow where I'm planted, and to try to produce some good seed. I don't think it is a good idea to describe anyone as "adversaries" or "allies". We declare our COI so that we can lay it aside. We are here to objectively improve Wikipedia, which includes making articles more NPOV. Gold Standard 20:22, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi again. There's no activity on the noticeboard, and I don't want to put anything more there before everyone's eyes unless you see it first, since you're the one who has actually engaged constructively in proposal-making. So I want to sound you out about two further ideas I have developed that might help.

  1. "Head of the Catholic Church", while POV, is RC POV, and it applies to the leader of the RC church. The interpretation of "head" is RC; the claim of catholicity is RC, and "Catholic Church" commonly implies the meaning of "Roman Catholic Church". That last is only one common meaning, but it is a common one most readers will cue in on. So as long as we're talking post-schism Popes, does that strike you as an acceptably placed and attributed POV? I think it does to me.
  2. The "eminent"-type phrases work only if we editors have the leeway to do the phrasing. I think that's been the case so far because the proposals have been an attempt to create a job description. I think I'm right about what I've said about application of WP:RS, but I think Johnbod has been hasty drawing conclusions about me, wrong ones actually, and doesn't want to engage even to read it. What most of the community is thinking, I have no idea; they are silent, and imagining this or that is really an exercise in mind-reading, so I just don't go there. But Johnbod is an experienced editor, and probably knows the people here, at least somewhat. He's been complaining about "not in the sources", and saying "never going to happen", or the equivalent. Maybe. He's still just one editor. But he is one who has at least responded a couple of times, civilly, if gruffly. And his dismissals have generally been made with reference to what modern-day Popes are called. He's just not paying much attention as far back as the schism (except for one reasonable idea about pre-Nicene Popes: "Bishop of Rome"). So my idea is to try to address his legitimate concerns (and even any illegitimate ones he may carry), in a manner that won't require him to read much.
I suggest we abandon the attempt at "job description" and go with an official "title" instead. A title carries weight, and a greater likelihood of being found in sources. Look at this one. It's official, straight from the pontificate itself, what better? Look carefully at what it says about the title "Patriarch of the West": established officially as a papal title in 642 by Pope Theodore; "West" means specifically the Latin Church; "never very clear" I interpret to mean that it never clearly represented what has come to be the modern RC view - naturally, since it wasn't the view then, it was Orthodox then; "never very clear" what the Latin Church was, because the see of Rome was continuing to develop and grow, as was the rest of the church; renounced as a title by Pope Benedict XVI as obsolete (which I expect is true), but only in 2006. That would argue currency of valid historical application of this title at least up to the schism. We also have a precedent in the way this community of editors treats the term "Pope": a way easily recognizable to moderns that identifies continuity in the line of bishops of Rome from Linus through to the present, and this despite any dubiousness about when it was historically applied in an official way. The officialness may matter to some, but not to me, and not to Orthodoxy. Likewise with "Patriarch of the West". I would argue it's fine to apply it backwards in time to Nicea, because clearly there were officially Patriarchs in the church by then, and the Pope was counted as one of them, in rank if not always in specific title. And if his see wasn't the Latin Church, what was it? It was precisely the Latin Church from Nicea through to Pope Theodore insofar as the Latin Church had developed historically up to the time of whatever Pope we'd be talking about. That's the same reasoning as used for the early "Pope"s. Finally, notice the Vatican communique's statement "The renouncement of this title aims to express a historical and theological reality, and at the same time could prove useful to ecumenical dialogue." I fully agree with the Vatican on that one.
Bottom line: I'm saying it's acceptable to Orthodox (and should be to Copts) to call Popes "Patriarch of the West" from Nicea through to the schism, and that would be the altered proposal. From the above, I don't see why Catholics would object, but let the historians decide if they want to raise questions about backward-fitting the title.

Thanks, and that's almost right: "head of the Catholic Church" post-schism. That's what's been there; I think that's what's official, so there would be pushback if it were changed. The idea of moving to official titles also requires that sources list the exact title, and preponderance of sources does become legitimate to application of WP:RS then. But I've had one more idea also that I intend to incorporate. I would like the proposal to mandate that "head of the Catholic Church" be followed immediately by an inline ref to an official source, and will in fact suggest one directly tied to the papacy. That ref then clearly attributes the POV to the RC claim, which is just an alternate way of doing what you originally proposed. I realize it's not quite as direct, but I do think it's quite clear. And I think most people would read the official title(?) as RC, so it's highly likely to carry that meaning anyway, even in text only. Still ok? Evensteven (talk) 07:40, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Updated numbers: Fiserv reported total revenue of $4.48 billion in 2012.

Under History "In June 2010, Fiserv acquired AdviceAmerica, the producer of software for financial institutions.[7"]

This was a small acquisition that included one product and would be more appropriate in the Acquisitions section under 2010.

"In October 2013, Fiserv announced that it will offer Guardian Analytics products for its clients to secure online banking channels.[10]"

I'd recommend we remove this line because I think a vendor added it. This was not a major milestone in the company’s history.

WikiProject AFC is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from March 1, 2014 to March 31, 2014.

Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.

Participation: Thanks to all who participated in the drive and helped out behind the scenes. 42 people signed up for this drive and 28 of these completed at least one article. Final results are available here.

Progress report: Articles tagged during the target months of December 2012 and January 2013 were reduced from 177 to 33, and the overall backlog was reduced by 13 articles. The total backlog was 2,902 articles at the end of March. On the Requests page during March, 26 copy edit requests were completed, all requests from January 2014 were completed, and the length of the queue was reduced by 11 articles.

You have rejected Articles for creation: eXosip (April 28)[edit]

Hi. You have rejected my submissions for eXosip and also added a notice for deletion for OSIP.

I do not clearly understand the reason for those 2 actions. You mention "most are merely passing mentions", but I disagree: all usage in academic research and appearance in books proove the notability of osip and eXosip free software. And those references/citations was validated by other people when osip was accepted. The sources are all reliable sources: all found using the wikipedia tools to find reliable sources.

Additionnally, the other references (from history) refers only to wikipedia approved open source software: those projects wouldn't exist without osip and exosip.

As requested during other submission and guidelines, I have removed all other inadequate wikipedia references. From now on, I have no idea how to move on with eXosip2: as an individual, you took a decision (NO approval for osip and eXosip with similar reliable/notable sources). In the past, another individual took the opposite decision (approval for osip with similar reliable/notable sources).

First, I would like to sincerely apologize for this confusion. The discrepancy between the acceptance and denial of those two articles should not have happened and I will work with other editors to fix the problem. I am still not entirely convinced on the notability, but I plan on asking other editors and getting their opinion on the matter. I will let you know what conclusions I reach. Please note that this may or may not mean that the articles will be included, but since they do both have pretty similar references, they should end up either both being included or both being excluded.

First off, the article has not been resubmitted for evaluation, so that needs to be done before anyone is going to get around to evaluating it. Secondly, I advise you to read the instructions that were left at the top of that article. You need to remove the promotional material and add reliable sources. The article contains lots of un-encyclopedic and advertising content that needs to be removed. Please read WP:RS and WP:NOTADVERTISING.
On a second note, you were blocked at the IP address you originally wrote that article on, and you shouldn't try to evade the block using a different address (however, I don't know if you deliberately changed IPs or just were assigned a new one).
Lastly, I would like to remind you that I am a volunteer. I choose to help out at Wikipedia if and when I choose to. I advise you to read WP:VOLUNTEER. TheCascadian 03:58, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Progress report: We reduced our article backlog from 2,987 articles to 2,236 articles in May, the lowest backlog total since we began keeping records in 2009! Since at least 300 new articles were tagged during May, that means we copy edited over 1,000 articles in a single month. Amazing work, everyone!
