Martin Armstrong Trying to edit his profile page

Hi Bgwhite, just to let you know that I have knowledge that 'Caesar..' is Mr Martin Armstrong himself, trying to edit his own page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_A._Armstrong. His desire is to place his version of the story and then prevent any edits from being made. He is attempting to use content from his autobiography PDF, but is not aware of the copyright approval process.

I have directed him to the following links already, but he is not willing to listen (or even read the pages apparently, because if he did then he would understand what is occurring).

I have no idea if Ceasar is Armstrong or not. The stuff that was added by ceasar was essentially to remove what was already written and put a confused mess in its place. No reason was given why/what Ceasar did, so I reverted.
If he is Armstrong, he can edit the article, but is strongly encouraged not to edit. Only sourced material will be added. Bgwhite (talk) 09:40, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
I have proof that it's him, as I have been in correspondence with him and I can forward you whatever you need to know. If you read his essays, you will probably note that a confused mess is his usual writing style. He is doing it because he believes (1) that the page is his property, and (2) that he has the right to include whatever links and content he wants. I do not care either way, it's just that until he gets advised in an official capacity, his edits will most likely continue. regards, Warren.

Please stop removing the external links from the article. Japanese entertainers are unique in that they may not have an official website, but they have blogs and other social media pages which are the only ways they exist independently on the Internet. A neat new gadget you might find useful

I recently asked on Village pump (technical) if someone could write a script that would allow the corresponding talk page or main page to be displayed when viewing articles in a category. User:Equazcion was kind enough to build it. The script can be found here. The script also shows in red if the corresponding page has not been created yet. New Pages update

Hey Bgwhite/Archive 7 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! There's no rush getting back to me. Aside from this list about an actress, I'm working on articles about children's books and their writers. I'm probably most proud of Alice Dalgliesh and Beezus and Ramona and the rest of the books in that series. One I started from scratch is Doris Gates. (I've since learned why to use the Show Preview button!) I have been directed to the Teahouse, and they are fantastic there. I was curious about the change you made, not protesting it or anything. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can so I do things correctly. I think I'll stay away from BLPs from now the on, the hurdles seem almost insurmountable to me. Thanks for your time. Thanks for the "hello". I started out on Wikipedia mostly creating and editing articles related to Japan and film, but after I began patrolling new pages on the same topics, I got more involved in AfDs, sniffing out hoax pages, and other fun stuff. I too hope I don't only get associated with horrible pages, but Jeremy Ladell Murph was a doozy (what I don't understand is why other editors, some of who added categories and other things, didn't mark it for deletion from the start). Howdy intern Malka Klein. Don't know if I should say condolences or congratulations on your internship.... people at the museum are on the weird side :). I cleaned up Gabriel Talphir and did the move on Lilian Klapisch. I have a question on Talphir. The wikilinks you have for his birth place were Stanislaw, Galicia. The wikilinks both go to disambiguous pages because there are more than one Stanislaw and Galicia. When I first saw Galicia, I thought of Spain. I put some more specific wikilinks in, but could you make sure I got them right. There were a few Stanislaws and they all have changed their names since 1901.
Also, I had to look you up. Looks like you are a research assistant at Tel Aviv University. At the university where I work, a research assistant is a graduate student who is getting paid to be a student. Comics bibliographies

I noticed that you removed the {{WikiProject Biography}} template that I had added to the bibliography articles for comics creators. In making sure that all the articles in the comics creators work group are properly tagged, I discovered that some of the bibliography articles were already part of the project as List-class. We should be consistent by having them all classified the same, so I don't understand why you would remove the ones that I added, when similar articles such as Dan Abnett bibliography and Neal Adams bibliography are still part of the project. Generally, bibliographies do not need WP biography on them. They are not about the person, but they are are a list of books, magazines and works. I used to put the biography banner on the talk pages, but several editors have said not to do this. If you go to almost any bibliography (William Faulkner bibliography, Mark Twain bibliography, C. S. Lewis bibliography, Alan Moore bibliography), WikiProject biography is not included. Bgwhite (talk) 21:07, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Ooops, forgot to say... add the listas parameter to the first banner, which should be WP bibliography. All the banners after will use the same listas. It doesn't work the other way... if you add listas to the last banner, that is the only banner which will use listas. I forgot to do it on some of the ones I edited yesterday. Ooops again. Make sure DEFAULTSORT in the article is set. Also have DEFAULTSORT and listas be: Moore, Alan, Bibliography. The commas actually have a big importance. This way the bibliography will be right after the author's article in any categories or lists. Bgwhite (talk) 21:19, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. There are actually only 17 bibliographies tagged as part of the comics creators work group, 3 of which you have already fixed as described above. I just edited an article, List of cartoonists. The biography banner is appropriate as it is a list of living and dead people. I removed the listas from one of the banners and added it to the biography banner. No matter where the biography banner is located (it should be first), all the other banners will use biography's listas. Indents

Firstly, thanks for all your compliments on my scripts. I wish I could've figured out why those red links didn't work for you, but I'm glad you like LiveDiffLink (it's my favorite :)

I wanted to comment though on your edits like this one: [1] -- It's generally frowned upon to edit other people's indents this way, because they've usually indented a certain way for a reason. Not every added comment requires an added indent. Indents are intentionally not added when people want to show that they're not replying to the person directly above them. See WP:INDENT for examples. Ooops, that was actually a mistake. I meant to remove the indent all together on yours as it had nothing to do with anything above. The one just above you clearly needed another indent as it was a reply. I deal with with mostly new users all day long where indenting is not used or misused. It's a habit to fix the indenting as 99% of the time it is wrong. On a side note, while in the middle of typing this, my dog got down from my lap and went to the door. I went to let her out, she sniffed the air, turned around and peed on the carpet. You want a dog? The cat script that didn't work actually wouldn't work for me anyway. I do alot of copy-paste into AWB. The copy-past included your addition, which isn't part of the article's title, so AWB would bomb. My intention is to try it out in a drop drop menu, so I could run it when I didn't need it for AWB. I was going to add it to cactions.js in my vector.js. Cactions adds a nice drop-down menu at the top where any script can be added. The original has a bug for vector where "svars" wouldn't work. svars is the user customizable menu that is set in monobook.js. So I've modified mine to add scripts that I wanted. AWB error

Sorry, I forgot to answer you. Why is WP US needed? Was she connected to the U.S. government or represented the U.S. (Olympic athlete for example). WP United States has as the scope, "...dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the United States, with an emphasis on subjects with regional and national significance". Hartley doesn't fall into this area. She may fall into WP California as she was born, lives and works in California. This is the ENGLISH Wikipedia. All references should be in English and are assumed to by default. Not only is this common sense, it is easy to find. I'll ask the same question I asked before. What does a separate page provide that isn't included in the current page?
The current page is a featured list. Current page complies with Wikipedia readability rules which none of the at-large articles currently do. Current page offers all the same information at-large page would. This also complies with merging two pages when one, large page contains the same exact information as the smaller page. We are also talking 16 years, not a long length of time or multiple times an at-large was created for some states. So, why a need for a separate page? Bgwhite (talk) 04:47, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

AWB issues

Hi, you've made a few AWB edits that i've undone; the {{lifetime}} template does default sort + birth/death years, there's no reason to delete it and replace it with individual templates. Thanks. --KarlB (talk) 22:28, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

DEFAULTSORT is a REQUIRED parameter for all biographies. The lifetime template is semi-depreciated and not to be used (see talk page). Bots will also replace this parameters. Bgwhite (talk) 22:51, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

um ok. I don't think you need to be snippy. Your edit summary says "Add DEFAULTSORT using AWB", so naturally, I assumed AWB did it (and the result was an error - two sort keys). In any case, if you delete lifetime, don't forget to add the year of birth/death categories. Also, I'm not sure if you know this, but DEFAULTSORT is created by lifetime, so if you don't touch lifetime, it will create birth/death/DEFAULTSORT - so I'm not sure why you keep saying it is REQUIRED - lifetime puts it in, so I think it was already there. Finally, I read the talk page - it is not deprecated; there are some voting for it to be deprecated, but there is no clear consensus.--KarlB (talk) 23:11, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Then try not to be snippy too. I said semi-depreciated as the use is discouraged and bots will replace it. Rich Farmbrough said why. The talk discussions were from 3 years ago. You will not find any of the main documention that say to use lifetime. You will find WP:NAMESORT, Wikipedia:Categorization and Wikipedia:Categorization of people mention to use DEFAULTSORT. Old templates die with new "updated" versions. It is amazing how many people think priority is still used in WikiProject Biography and it was removed from the template in 2009. I add that information as persondata and defaultsort are required information on articles. Prods are contested and AfDs are votesdto keep, so irregarless of the status, add them anyway. Banners on talk pages alert the editors that the article has been Proded, AfD or other alerts. For WikiProject Canada, this is their list and the banner is how it is done. It's pretty clearcut. The Canadian Parliament website has a complete list of all MPs and Senators, past and present, this person simply isn't there. There is no record at other sources, the "Ministry of Provincial Railways" doesn't seem to exist, and worst of all the author has not bothered to respond in the past five days, despite having made a couple of other edits in the meantime (so it's not a case of being offline). It doesn't matter if it is a clear cut case. When I or anyone else comes by, it isn't clear cut because we don't have a crystal ball. But it doesn't matter. I still do my work and other do their work... adding cats for example.
No, it isn't on the page I was talking about because the banner was never added. It is an automatic process when a banner is added. What you mention is a talk page where somebody has to manually bring it to discussion, which is rare. Some people may not have the talk page on their watchlist, but are looking at the other page. I've removed the content for now (making sure that there's enough that there won't be any hyperzealous A7 tags!) and am bringing the list to you in hopes that you can, as you suggested, help with rewrites.

Drkup and Allison seem to have made it through with the permission this time. :) The articles in this list are all restored. Since the permission was liberal (for the descriptions of the artist list), this opens up the possibility of future material being added from the list. To avoid this problem coming up again, I have created a simple template that can be used to acknowledge the authorization for future content at Wikipedia:GLAM/IMJ OTRS. Besides verifying permission (to prevent copied material being discovered and removed at some later point), it'll help ensure that reusers do not violate the rights of the museum, since they released the material under CC-By-SA only. Is there somewhere within those project pages to note the existence of the template, can you help put it there? suicide methods

I didn't remove the "Ottobre in Poesia" links is in the article. There is a wikilink and also link in the External links section. Having it in the external links and a related items section is redundant. I didn't delete the photo from commons... I don't have the authority, plus I see no reason for its deletion. I removed it from the article as it ended up being the only thing in the "related items" section. With the infobox taking up 2/3 of the page, adding the photo made the page look cluttered. You can add the photo back if you feel the need, but leave out the redundant "Ottobre in Poesia" link. Bgwhite (talk) 06:22, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

For the section external link there is the link of the official page of Ottobre in Poesia, and it is ok as you wrote me, but in the section related items was the link to the wikipedia of October in poetry. For this reason I left the two links in two different sections, because one was the official website of Ottobre in Poesia so external link to wikipedia, and the other link the connecting to the wikipedia page of October in poetry. Hello! I'm new here. I need to know if the edits I made to the article Jessicka here --> [2] are resources from independent authors and third-party publications? Are Art Slant,[3] Juxtapoz,[4] Supahcute,[5] Coagula Art Journal, [6] & Hi- Fructose [7] all reputable 3rd party Art (information) sources? If so can my edits be left on the article Jessicka?

A couple of caveats. I see you are having an "issue" with another editor. I have no idea what is going on, so I'd like to stay out of that. Second, I'm not an art expert. The sites hifructose, coagula and supahcute are definitely not reliable sites. They appear to be blog sites that have no editorial control. Punctuation

Hi. Just saw this AWB edit that you made and noticed that you moved the reference outside the parentheses. Per WP:REFPUNC, it is actually appropriate to have reference inside that type of punctuation. Just curious whether moving the ref was something you did manually, or whether it is inbuilt in AWB (in which case I will take this up with AWB's developers)? It is manual. Actually per WP:REFPUNC, Chicago Manual of Style and Butcher's... All references follow all punctuation except for two cases. One exception is that references can be after a dash, example is born 1999[10] - died 2009[11]. Second exception is for parentheses. References should be after parentheses except for one situation. In the case where two references are used to source separate things inside the parentheses, the references go inside the parentheses. For example: (born 1999[10] - died 2009[11]) or the example used in REFPUNC, (Korean: 김정은;[10] Hanja: 金正恩[11]). There has been a running battle in talk pages on what to do when the reference pertains to only one piece of info inside the parentheses. One group aheirs to Chicago. Another group follows other Style guidelines and adds the ref to the specific info.
So... If the reference applies to both dates, the ref goes outside the parenthesis. If the references applies just to a birth or death date, placing the ref inside or outside is acceptable on Wikipedia. 90% of the time I see it, the ref applies to both dates. Bgwhite (talk) 02:52, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. Anyway, while I cannot speak to CMoS and Butcher's, I don't think you are correct in regards to WP:REFPUNC. It says "where a reference or other footnote applies only to material within a parenthetical phrase", so even if the ref is for both the dob and dod (which was not the case for Fred Fanning), it should still be inside the parens. I would kindly request you stop making these changes unless (a) you check the ref to make sure it is referencing more than just the info in parens, or (b) you get the MoS changed. NEVER NEVER NEVER tell me to do something that is not in MOS or has even been agreed upon. Try reading the darn thing and stop telling me what to do. Never just half quote... "where a reference or other footnote applies only to material within a parenthetical phrase"... try reading the rest of the quote, "placing the tag within the closing parenthesis may be appropriate." It MAY be appropriate, but not always, which was what I was first saying. Default is outside except for MAY be appropriate.
I will continue putting refs outside parentheses when only one date is inside. I will continue to put refs outside the parentheses when the ref applies to everything inside.... That is MOS. That is Chicago. That is Butcher. I quote, "Relative to other punctuation, the [note] number follows any punctuation mark except for the dash, which it precedes Though a note number normally follows a closing parenthesis, it may on rare occasion be more appropriate to place the number inside the closing parenthesis". Guess what, it says after the parenthesis except on rare occasion.... just like your half quote. There is no settled MOS guideline on what to do for that rare occasion if the ref applies to part info in the parenthesis. Just great, a newly minted admin going around telling what people to do, use half quotes, failing to read the entire MOS page and not looking up past talk pages message. But I think you might be overreacting here, I never told you to do anything – it was a request – and I don't see what me going through RfA at the moment has to do with anything (as for "newly minted", you can still oppose if you wish). Ethiopian names

You didn't set DEFAULTSORT in the article, so that started me digging... That was actually shocking because you made a mistake. You don't make any mistakes on the gazillion articles you create. Oh, I wish that was true of other editors. I really wish I could understand Brazilian and Ethiopian nuances better. For non-Arabic Ethiopian names, the default is patronymic, but it is not always the case. If I can't figure out what to use, I fall back on default as I have no evidence to do otherwise.
What piqued my interest in this case is you added alternate names in persondata and the refs also used the alternate name. The IAAF ref treats Regassa as a surname and sorts on it. This isn't unusual as I've seen them make mistakes not only on Ethiopian, but Asian names. Ethiosports ref also used Regassa as a surname. I'm not familiar with this source (it looks unreliable). Lastly, all the refs were dropping Mootumaa. Why? Add up everything and it appeared not to be patronymic.
I've been looking around at other sources to figure this out. Some sources do and don't drop Mootumaa. I've found a few that do treat it patronymic.
FYI... Both Google and my DNS provider both say bahrainathletics.org is infested. Bahrain at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics uses Dalhan Nezar as Dejenee's name as it comes from the refs. Some refs use Dejene and not Dejenee.

Actually no. This was the case until last September or so. They keep changing it, so who knows what is up with it at any moment.
For putting a BLPPROD, "To place a BLPPROD tag, the process requires that the article contain no sources in any form (as references, external links, etc.), which support any statements made about the person in the biography. Please note that this is a different criterion than is used for sources added after the placement of the tag."

Huh? The original problem was that a BLPprod was put up when a source was in the article. It was not about removing the BLPprod. The source was IMDb. Yes, there is consensus that IMDb is unreliable, which is why I said it was unreliable. However, you cannot add a BLPprod if there is an unreliable reference, there has to be no references. You cannot remove a BLPprod by adding an IMDb reference, because it is unreliable (which I think is a little contradictory and a great loophole that editors exploit). Hi; I am the writer for the Inusa Dawuda article and I am a bit confused as to why primary sources are not considered as valid as sources from third party sources. As a librarian, primary sources are considered more credible than third party sources. The information that this article lists is the artist's official biographical information written by publicists for his web presence via websites and other artist biographical web resources. This information is not from my mind or head, but from the artist's official information which I formatted for the wikipedia article. Please consider removing the neutrality and references warnings from the page. I can work with the artist on locating more references and resources to verify statements throughout the piece. WP:SOURCES says it better than I could. Essentially, Dawuda could put anything on his website and there is no way to corroborate the information. Unfortunately, I've seen it way too many times where the primary source is waaaay off when talking about themselves. A great example is Yahoo's CEO just stepped down because he lied about his college degree. In theory, a 3rd party sources, such as a newspaper, has checked the facts. One of the first lines in the sources link I gave is, "Verifiability, and not truth, is one of the fundamental requirements for inclusion in Wikipedia." So, unfortunately, everything maybe true, but it has to be verifiable. I don't doubt he is a musician and he should have a Wikipedia page per the requirements. I removed two of the tags at the top of the page. You removed some of the puffy words (smooth, beautiful, etc.) and you added two good refs (sort of, see further along). I still left the BLP tag, as some sources still could be added because I removed the unreliable ones. I removed the Champion Records ref, not because it is bad, but the information was on the front page and will eventually disappear. Could you add the permanent link for the Champion Records ref. I removed some blogs refs and interviews. General blogs, especially anything blogspot, should be avoided. Interviews are the same as a personal website references, can't be used to talk about 3rd parties, how well a record did, etc. Otherwise, it is a real good article. Okay, great. Will do. I will add the permalink for the Champion Records reference asap. I will continue to add sources to replace the unreliable ones.
