Summerbell: thanks for welcome

Many thanks, bibliomaniac15! In connection with those tips you left on my talk page, it would be great if there were a simple "for dummies" protocol somewhere about how to upload a photo into a Wikipedia page in the simplest format. I spent a couple of hours once trying to sort such a procedure out in the help text, but in all the copyright-related legalese and detailed instructions for various kinds of marginal format, I eventually got bogged down. If you know of a 1,2,3-step idiot's guide someplace, by all means point it out to me.

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Bibliomaniac15, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Sasuke-kun27 02:14, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
About your reply on my talk page, don't worry about it. I chose to greet people to the Esperanza "community". It is my job to help people feel welcome when they join the group. And let me tell you, I love my job ^^. If you have a question, don't be afraid to ask me or one of the other members any time. Good luck on future edits and we're glad to have you as a member of Esperanza. Sasuke-kun27 03:00, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Heck ya!

Of course, be my guest. The page is a little...lacking. Thanks!Julz

Hello. You may or may not remember this, but some time ago you signed up for a Hangman Tournament hosted here on Wikipedia. The next tournament is about to start, and I was just wondering if you were still interested in participating. If you are, please go to the page (linked above) and bold your name in the sign-up list. This will confirm your registration. If you are not interested any more, please feel free to remove your name from the list. If you haven't responded within 7 days, I will assume you are not interested, and remove you from the list.

Once you confirm your registration on the sign-up list, your waiting list spot will be confirmed. The first player on the waiting list who has confirmed their registration will be the first one to fill in any remaining spots that we may have.

If you think anyone else may be interested in this tournament, please drop them a note and ask them to sign up. Good luck, and I hope to see you at the tournament! If you have any questions, please contact me at my talk page. Ian Manka Talk to me! 13:52, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Well, thank you,

... for noticing our meager contribution at the RD. We had originally signed up to do more but then felt uncomfortable with that level of comittment (with no backup). So, right now we're only doing the date headers and waiting for some others to come forward to help out with transcluding and archiving. We've noticed your good responses at the RD (amongst other places) and look forward to "seeing" you around. Oh, and thank you very much for the barnstar --H&J

word association

Thank you for your additions to the word association games, however please only add one word per turn to each game, and then wait until at least one other user has added their word to the game before your next turn - even if more than one person has hadded a word since you last did.

The only exception is the Sliding Doors game, where you add 1 word above the silver line and 1 word below. If you add two words above or below then it breaks the game.

Where you have added more words to a game than you should, then all but the first may be removed by any subsequent editor. These simple rules keep the games interesting and enjoyable for the maximum number of people. Thryduulf 17:50, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, I have acknowledged the notice about the Original barnster and the resolvement for Miley Cyrus's photo and I have to say

Hey! Just wanted to tell you I got WikiWar nearly set up. All I need is for you and DFR (who is working on it) to fill in about your nations, and we can begin the game. What's your point? Almost no one is touching the Wikiproject. The only "new" edits to that page are users joining it. I don't see any participation on their part. As far as I'm concerned, it's time to let this project go. I don't even see you working on it. (Iuio 21:21, 15 October 2006 (UTC))

You said: "Why did you remove the image put in by LBM? Didn't they put in a fair use rationale?"

Yes, but the problem is that it is a copyrighted image. Recent changes to fair-use policies mean that we can't use this copyrighted image. --Yamla 01:46, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Sorry about the tagging of those Oregon locations: they were in Category:Cascade Range which is mostly not in California but some of it is in California, and the bot was tagging all the articles in that category as a mistake. WP:WHMT

Hello, Bibliomaniac15/Archive 2. You may or may not remember signing up for the Wikipedia Hangman Tournament, but the time has finally arrived for you to start your game! You have until 00:30, 27 April 2024 (UTC) to begin your game by typing {{subst:Wikipedia:WikiHangman Tournament/New|~~~~}} on the corresponding round page. You should also visit your match page, as you will be able to see various aspects of your match.

I would also suggest:

If you have any questions at all regarding the procedures and rules of this tournament, please feel free to contact me at my talk page. Thanks again, and good luck!

In case you are wondering why it took so long to begin this tournament, my computer was not operating correctly, and my Internet usage was limited to public computers. My opportunities to use public computers were limited, so needless to say, I didn't have a lot of time to commit to Wikipedia. So, sorry if this has caused you any inconvience. Good luck! If you have any questions, please contact me at my talk page. Ian Manka 02:24, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Concerns

Thanks, Bibliomaniac. I have seen how some of the main pages operate, and have also seen how perfectly good articles can be corrupted by Wikipedia's 'open access' policy, a gate for the ignorant as well as the knowledgeable. The problem is not the people who may know something but those who, in effect, know nothing, but think they know everything; either that or they are determined to push a particular point of view at all hazards. My preference is to be where I can be of greatest use; where my contributions cannot be traduced, rewritten and generally bowlderized. I can do this on the reference desk, answering questions, and correcting misconceptions, within the limits of my competence. On the RD I can be of greatest use, and it is here I would choose to remain. I hope this is not a problem. Clio the Muse 01:46, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Cleanup

I haven't opened a taskforce project for this because I think it is almost done but could you look at Bluestone in the secion on New York and Pennsylvania and see if the sentences are in a good order, please? I rearranged it some but I'd like a second opinion. Thank you. RJFJR 16:48, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

On Original Research

Hello Bibliomaniac. The edit which you deleted is far from original. It is a reflection of the facts as would stand up in any court of law and which are the product of thousands of researchers around the world. Wikipedia, perhaps I should remind you, is an encyclopedia of facts not of fiction. It is not a vehicle for terrorists who seek to harm United States citizens and then cover up their trails by employing people such as yourself to prevent the truth from being known by the American people. Unlike yourself, the truth is very dear to my heart as indeed is the constitution of the United States. No amount of money invested by the interested parties into the obfuscation of the reality of that fateful day will prevent the truth from being known. User:Langdell

Missing Day on the RD

Hell again, Bibliomaniac. I'm sure you can help with this. There is a complete day on the current Humanities RD (Nov 18) that has been removed for reasons that I cannot determine (a technical fault?). I know that it is possible to revert to the last point in the page history where it appears; but this will surely mean removing everything that has been added since? I've also posted a note about this on the discussion page. Regards Clio the Muse 09:01, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

PS-This has now been corrected! Clio the Muse 22:54, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Your comments regarding Esperanza's Introduction

I read your comments in Esperanza's reach out section. They pretty much sum up the exact problem with Esperanza.

"I am frustrated that Esperanza does not fulfill its introduction" , which is basically, "Esperanza believes that if we make the community a better place to be, we are also helping to make the encyclopedia better."

There are many people who do not feel Esperanza makes the community better. You made two comments in the MfD debate that pretty much summed that up.

  1. "Esperanza is not just a frivolous society, it is comprised of the heart of Wikipedia" gives the impression that you and your little group (which make up 0.0007% of the total membership by your own numbers) is the heart of Wikipedia and that everyone else is ... what? Fringe? Useless? Your group was frivolous. User page awards, barnstar brigades, gaming rooms, coffee lounges full of dog barking, and endless amounts of basically wikicruft made it that way.
  1. "Not every user is some geek who spends all their time on Wikipedia for the sole purpose of editing articles" , which basically dismissess any non-Esperanzan as a nerd with no life. Gee, thanks.

Your group's problem is that the only people that find value in what you do is your group. Now, there are some people who are working very hard to keep the valuable parts of Esperanza, and to move forward. Some, though, don't think that's a wise idea, and that is sad. Comments like those made by yourself, Pursey, Hildanknight, Iamtheeggman, Doomsday, and others make many outside of your community wonder if you value your little group more than the consensus of others on Wikipedia. --ElaragirlTalk|Count 23:05, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks for welcoming me to Wikipedia. I keep making mistakes when I edit (spelling and grammar mostly), because there doesn't seem to be a spell-checker. Not sure if that was the only thing that had the entire "backlash" entry removed but am suitably chastened and won't attempt to re-enter it. :) Have also removed a linking entry on the Back to the Future page just in case (although in that instance I was referencing the film-makers own DVD commentary).

Thanks for the welcome =)

Response

Thanks for your message on my talk page; your advice is appreciated and will be considered. Just a note that I tried closing the MfD, which I thought was within my right as the original nominator. Policy isn't clearly laid out as to whether that's kosher or not, but I didn't contest Doug Bell's re-opening of everything. — Whedonette (ping) 05:32, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Also for me thanks for the message you left on my talk page. It was very helpful and nice. I know I should have wrote this a long time ago but I was busy with wikipedia and my contribians. Anyway thanks.Johnny542 00:49, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

My review

Thank you for reviewing me. I am aware of the fact that I have edited my user page and subpages quite frequently but I have already started to cut down my user edits. As for RfA, I have already been looking through all of the requested admins and have decided to nominate myself when my edit count is (at least) 5000. About your comment on SD, I have only decided to tag either bios or nonsense and I have decided not to tag the pages which I am unsure of.

Also, congratulations on your work on Wikipedia!

Re: editor review template & Your editor review.

Hi Bibliomaniac15. Firstly may I say thank you for your constructive suggestions on my editor review, which I have taken into account and will be working on so that I can expand my knowledge and understanding of the wikipedia more. Now, I have managed to rectify the issue with your editor review template, which you had said on your User page, was not working.

The reason it had failed to work is that you had registered the editor review as bibliomaniac15, when the template automatically registers your username in its case sensitive form, Bibliomaniac15. Therefore, the template was trying to link to a non-existant editor review.

I have carried out a move, so I have sent your editor review, Wikipedia:Editor review/bibliomaniac15 to Wikipedia:Editor review/Bibliomaniac15 so that the template and everything else works correctly. I hope this has been of help to you. Regards and best wishes, Thor Malmjursson 15:16, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank you!

Many thanks for your comments at my editor review! I shall indeed continue to participate at WP:RFA, and I am quite grateful for your confidence in me and my future RFA. Please let me know if there is anything else I can improve, or anything I could help with. All the best, Dar-Ape 21:17, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Editor Review

The reason why I asked you that question was because I haven't seen any javascript subpages of yours. Go Futurama! User:Sp3000 05:53, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank you

I just wanted to thank you for your support in my recent RfA, which was successful. I'll do my best to wield the broom wisely! | Mr. Darcy talk 18:30, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

What?

I didn't Understand What You said. Sorry.

Wikipedia:Editor review/Just H

Thanks for the input. I'm curious, at this rate, do you think i'm admin material, and if so, when would I be ready? Just H 02:03, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

  • I understand. Thanks for the extra input. Just H 02:07, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Just one more thing

I thought the general threshold was 2,000 edits rather than 4,000. Either way, it's not a big deal, just curious. Just H 16:06, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

4,000 by January 1st

If I could get 4,000 edits by January 1st, would you support me for an rfa? I have 1,400 as of today. Just H 16:36, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

I Understand

I'm going to try for rfa next week or the week after that regardless of edit count. Even if I fail, I will relish any feedback from both supporters and opposers. I'm thinking of aiming for a featured list by then, I have a few ideas as where to go. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help the encyclopedia. Just H 22:23, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Premature Rfas Harming Future Rfas

Would a premature rfa harm future attempts at an rfa? If not, I don't see the harm, but I thank you for the warning. I'll try my best to be more balanced and patient, but I guess it's a bit of a challenge that I am locked into at this point in regards to going for next week. Unless it would harm future attempts, i'm still probably going to try at least.

Once again though, thank you for all your advice. Hopefully I will be able to improve as a Wikipedian to the point where we can look back fondly on these discussions. Just H 22:41, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Another Goal

I think i'm going to aim for 3,000 edits by the end of tomorrow. (most of which largely coming from welcoming) to be honest, that goal isn't as much about adminship as to whether or not to see if I can achieve it. Just H 22:43, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Failure Is How We Learn

Who knows? I might get it on the first try. It seems that the worst that could happen is that I have some excitement for a few days :-)

In that meantime, i'd still be improving. Just H 22:46, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Egotism/Boredom

I can't be entirely altruistic to be honest, I must also say that it's also a bit for my ego. I'm excited to see what Wikipedia looks like through the eyes of a sysop. Just H 22:49, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

On Second Thought

I was thinking about what you said, and i'm not sure if i'll "go for it" or not next week with the rfa. Instead of 3000, I think 2000 is a good goal for today. Thank you again for your insight. Just H 17:10, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Out of curiosity, what is a vote of "Weak Neutral"? You don't have a strong opinion about not having an opinion? :) Quarl (talk) 2006-12-12 08:10Z

I'm using it to signify that I am on the verge of voting support or oppose. In this case, it would be the former. I'll clarify my position. :) bibliomaniac15 01:23, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
I see. Thanks :) Quarl (talk) 2006-12-13 05:18Z

Thanks for voting

I appreciate the feedback that I received during the RfA process. Unfortunately, I withdrew my candidacy. However, your participation is appreciated. I have made my New Years Resolution (effective immediately) to attempt to vote on at least 50 WP:XFD/week (on at least 5 different days), to spend 5 hours/week on WP:NPP, to be active in WikiProjects and to change the emphasis of my watchlist from editorial oversight to vandalism prevention. I have replaced several links that I had on my list to some that I think are more highly vandalized (Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds, my congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., my senator Barrack Obama and Jesse Jackson). My first day under my newly turned leaf was about what I hope a typical day to be. I quickly found a vandal, made a few editorial changes to Donald Trump, voted at WP:CFD and WP:AFD, continued attempted revitalization of Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chicago and proposed a new stub type as a result of WP:NPP patrol. I hope this will broaden my wikipedia experience in a way that makes me a better administrator candidate. I hope to feel more ready to be an admin in another 3000 or so edits. My RfA

Bibliomaniac15/Archive 2, thank you for participating in my RfA which passed on 13th December 2006 with a tally of 49/10/5. I am delighted by the result and a little daunted; I appreciate the various comments re lack of experience in some aspects and I shall be cautious in my use of the new tools. I am well aware that becoming an Admin is not just about a successful nomination, but a continuing process of gaining further experience and I should welcome your feedback on any Admin tasks I become involved with. Again, many thanks for taking the time to consider my RfA and add your kind neutral comments. Feel free to contact me if you need any assistance. :-) David Ruben 03:02, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Just figured I ought to thank you for the welcome...even though it's already been two months since that. E Liquere 03:32, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Borderline personality disorder Workpage

This workplace was created per admin's instructions so we would have a place to work on things that are scheduled for deletion. He told me -SPECIFICALLY- to create in the BPD (user) namespace and to incorporate the link into the {{~ Inuse ~}} templete importer (can I call it that?) so that BPD editors can just click to get to the page. On the workpage, I will have return links so they can then get back to either the BPD topic page or the BPD talk page to make the whole thing user friendly.

Thanks for contacting me so quickly. Being an AOL user, I sometimes have no chance at all to edit in the evening, being blocked left and right. --Kiwi 23:18, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Reference desk revert

I re-removed the question. There have been extensive discussions about this on the talk page. I invite you to read them, and join in the discussion, rather than prolonging an edit war. -- SCZenz 02:36, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

No problem. You might remember, in the future, that when an admin uses the rollback button (as Friday had), there's usually a good reason. It's usually a good idea to ask why before undoing the revert. -- SCZenz 02:40, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

WTF?

The American Revolution, 18th century? Are you kidding me? ... or have i got it all wrong? man, now i'm really confused...

Question about talk...

Is there a limited amount of time that you can reply? For instance, on a forum I go to, posts older than 2 weeks are not to be responded to. Can you clear this up? Thanks Aramjm 00:07, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your support

Thank you for your support in the RfA on my behalf. It is an honor to have received your expression of confidence. To be chosen as an administrator requires a high level of confidence by a broad section of the community. Although I received a great deal of support, at this time I do not hold the level of confidence required, and the RfA did not pass. It is my wish that I will continue to deserve your confidence. Sincerely, --BostonMA talk 19:04, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I'd also suggest you archive your talk page, as your talk page is getting very long (But only a suggestion!). If you have any questions, please contact me at my talk page. Ian Manka 01:07, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
