Note from the WWF concerning the August drive

Hello Bill,

I'm coming here as assistant coordinator of WikiProject Wikify, and there are a couple of things I'd like to say about our August backlog drive. First, thank you for your work. Whatever else you may have done, it is obvious you take it seriously, and we are grateful for that. However, please do not take it upon yourself to remove the entries from another editors log, as you did here. Simply bringing it to our attention is entirely the better course of action, and I assure you that the situation is being looked into. Please do not consider this a "warning" in the conventional sense of the term, but note that should editors take it upon themselves to remove entries whenever they felt they were wrong, our drives would quickly descend into chaos. I might add that I have no belief that you will do this again in the future. Thanks, and happy wikifying -- Nolelover Talk·Contribs 18:30, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Nolelover, the user whose log I removed never understood the problem. I removed those entries so that I may wikify them freshly after some time and transferred them under my userspace. I'll keep in mind to not to interfere with other user's work, which I never do (this case was different), but may I ask you what possible action project would have taken for this case and what have I done wrong in transferring those entries?
We are going through every one of his entries to make sure they are wikified enough to be counted. And our problem wasn't with you re-wikifying some of those articles, but rather you removing all of his. Again, I appreciate you taking this seriously, but wholesale removal of a user work (questionable or otherwise) is entirely (and only) the job of the drive coordinators. Responding to RFCs

Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. See also Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Suggestions for responding.

Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Transitional fossil. Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! However, please note that your input will carry no greater weight than anyone else's: remember that an RFC aims to reach a reasoned consensus position, and is not a vote. In support of that, your contribution should focus on thoughtful evaluation of the issues and available evidence, and provide further relevant evidence if possible.

Just thinking about it, perhaps if the information could be worked into the article, it could be said in the hook that it was only four months after the country became independent. Miyagawa (talk) 17:48, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Bill, I just wanted to let you know that if you find an article that duplicates another, rather than using PROD, you can ask for a speedy deletion with {{db-a10}}. Thanks for catching that those to Shiva temple articles were the same. I deleted the one you prodded as A10 speedy. Cheers, LadyofShalott 03:47, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Wikilinking the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games athletes

Some do have articles on Wikipedia that is why it should be linked, but you are right as well. Secondly, I have omitted the middle names instead of including them. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 03:31, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Some? yes, how many? one in Athletics at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, do you really think its a good number? Okay, it would be better to add only non red-links. — Bill william comptonTalk 03:36, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes you are right, but my point is if one already exists how soon until more start showing up? It would be a chore to go back and add all the links. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 03:41, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 September newsletter

Trophy.png

We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) and Australia Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.

If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Wikimedia Stories Project

Hello,

My name is Victor Grigas, and I'm a storyteller at the Wikimedia foundation. We're telling stories of Wikipedia users, editors, donors, programmers and staff to paint a picture of who uses Wikipedia - for the 2011 fundraiser.

I am in the process of planning a trip to India to gather stories from Indian Wikipedians in face-to-face interviews (possibly on video).

My primary goal is to conduct 15-20 interviews, and hopefully enough of my interviews will make compelling stories that will effectively solicit donations from the public. These stories may also be used for other communication purposes by the foundation.

I found your userpage on a list of prolific Wikipedians and thought I’d reach out to you. Prolific editing is always a good story to tell!

If you are interested in participating, please contact me via my email:

vgrigas@wikimedia.org

Thank you for your time!

Victor

About me: I have been a Wikipedia editor since 2005, and have a background in film, video and audio. My userpage can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Victorgrigas

More images in Demographics

I was afraid that people would say the my selection of the 12 images was geographically biased, which they did, even though my choices reflected the bias in Indian FPs. Fearing more such complaints, and the process dragging on, I've added 24 new images to the Demographics set, making a complete set of 36 representing every state and religion in India, with the exception of native Andaman Island(er)s and Indian Jews, both, sadly, dying communities. If you'd like to change your vote, in light of the new images, please do; otherwise, your old choices will remain as is. The new images are not FPs, since the first set of 12 had exhausted all the India FPs; however, they are still good hi-res images. I had to go through some 10 thousand images to find them. Interview with Wikimedia Foundation

Hi Bill, I hope this finds you well. My name is Matthew Roth and I'm a Storyteller working on the 2011 fundraiser with the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. In past years, we've relied on Jimbo to carry the bulk of the fundraising weight and he's done very well helping us hit our yearly funding targets. This year, however, we're broadening the scope and reach of the fundraiser by incorporating more voices and different people on the funding banners and appeals that will start running full-time on November 7th. We're testing new messages and finding some really great results with editors and staff members of the Foundation. You can see the current progress of the tests here. I'm curious if you would want to participate in an interview with me as part of this process? The interviews usually last 60 minutes and involve a number of questions about your personal editing experiences, as well as general questions about Wikipedia and its impact in the world. Please let me know by emailing mroth (at) wikimedia.org. Thanks! Matthew (WMF) 17:13, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

India Image Vote Results Disagreement

Hi,

Thank you for voting in the India Demographics Image Vote. I have counted the results of the vote and displayed them here. The top 8 images with the most votes were displayed.

Unfortunately, User:Fowler&fowler believes that he should be the one that gets to pick the final images, despite the fact that all of us have voted. He has called me disruptive, and when I tried to explain myself, he has reverted my explanation on the talk page twice!!! How can a user just delete someone else's comments on the Talk page?

Wikipedia consensus says that the images that most people have agreed upon should be the ones in the rotation. One user can't just pick his own images when all of us have voted. I am not sure what to do.

Since you voted, please post your opinion here. Thanks. Nikkul (talk) 02:52, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
