Type below both of these lines, please. And please check passages before or after yours to ensure that there is a reason to why something is a certain way that shouldn't be, because even though I am a wary editor, things often go over my head. Also, if you are signed into your account, please end your passages with four (not three, not five) tildes, and put four hyphens, two spaces below the tildes. For my main page, click here. Hey, Bro[edit]

Hey Bro, I Love you. From redhearts11 05:30, 2 March 2008

Re: thanks[edit]

Hi there. No problem at all; I thought I recognized you from somewhere around the time I came across redhearts11 (must be the new users contrib list). I wish you guys good luck. ~ Troy (talk) 04:12, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Re: I have a question[edit]

I'm not sure what you mean. We have questions asked on many different pages every day. Most will have a small box to the right side of the page that lists the archives for that page. If you can tell me which page in particular you're asking about, I can try to help you out more. Wikipedia:Questions might help you find the page you want. Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:02, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Re: About Cheat Pages[edit]

No, certainly not. Commons is intended as a repository of freely licensed images and files. They're not going to want that any more than we do, and in fact, none of the Wikimedia Foundation's projects would. As I think I've already told you, stuff like that needs to be on your own site, not here. Hersfold (t/a/c) 23:29, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

signpost[edit]

To get it posted to your talk page, just add your username to this list - but you don't have to to read it, you can just read it at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost. --Random832 (contribs) 07:43, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, 832. I requested it under User talk:BlueCaper/Signpost if anyone that sees this page would like to read it.

Re: Awards[edit]

You can use the same templates, or there are a few others you can use. To make your custom one, follow these steps:
  1. Go to the page you want to create the template at, say, Template:WAA
  2. Choose one of the templates listed below, and fill in the fields that are in ALL CAPS. Leave any {{{1}}} things alone.
Code Appearance
{{subst:award|image=IMAGE NAME.EXT|text={{{1}}}}}
Original Barnstar.png
Example
{{subst:award2|image=IMAGE NAME.EXT|text={{{1}}}|topic=AWARD NAME}}
A Barnstar!
Awesomeness Award

Example

Note: This is really the standard barnstar template, it just may display funny in this table.

3.  List it on the appropriate page of WP:AWARD, probably Wikipedia:Other awards.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask someone at Wikipedia:WikiProject Awards - they'll know more about this than I do. Hersfold (t/a/c) 03:40, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

WAA[edit]

I used Inkscape, a program that creates vector images. They are generally more prefered over JPG and PNG, which are raster images. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, making things like the WAA I made is pretty easy. Let me know if you need any help with it! --pbroks13talk? 17:52, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

MfD nomination of Wikipedia:WAA[edit]

Wikipedia:WAA, a page you substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WAA and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Wikipedia:WAA during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Garden. 21:43, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

I disagree with your labelling of my attitude as "hostile". I simply do not see a fathomable reason to keep the page, and I am questioning some editors on their doubtful stances. I do not believe I am "relentlessly jabbing" - if I was, I would have simply deleted the page. As I have a heart (contrary to popular belief :D ) I decided to file an MfD. Thanks for your understanding. Garden. 22:41, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:KenshinSW.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:KenshinSW.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 15:05, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

      • Thanks, Mgm. :-) BlueCaper, I'm not sure exactly what you mean about adopting an article; so far as I'm aware, we don't really have such a program set up. You're certainly welcome to choose an article to focus your work on, as that's often how articles get to GA or FA status, although there's no formal process for that. You can also consider joining a Wikiproject, many of which hold "collaboration of the week" programs on certain articles. Does this help answer your question? Sorry for the long delay in answering, I haven't been around for over a month for various reasons. Hersfold (t/a/c) 14:52, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Image copyright problem with File:HanzoSW.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:HanzoSW.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Re: What is adoption?[edit]

Adoption refers to the Adopt-a-user program for new users, where an experienced editor will help a newbie "learn the ropes." It has nothing to do with orphaned pages, although adopters will often assign their adoptees to various cleanup tasks such as that. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:32, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationales[edit]

Oh boy. Now I see why you were asking.

WP:NFCC is the relevant policy here, but I'm going to assume you've already read that; if you haven't, do so now. The criteria on that page all must be met in order for us to use a copyrighted image under the terms of fair use. To summarize all of the main points, fair use images have to be of low quality, provide substantial educational insight, used as little as possible, and cannot be replaced by something we can get without copyright. When uploading a copyrighted image, you have to provide a rationale that addresses all of these points, as well as the other criteria. An example would be:

"This image is to be used only in Sunburg, Minnesota (WP:NFCC#7, 9) to illustrate to readers the seal of the city, the symbol of the city's government (WP:NFCC#5, 8). Because it is a copyrighted work of the City of Sunburg, obtained from their website at [insert link here], no free equivalent of this image exists or can be obtained. (WP:NFCC#1, 4). The entire portion of the work is necessary to illustrate the full city seal (WP:NFCC#3b), and no other images will be used for this purpose, as this image provides the best means of doing so (WP:NFCC#3a). As the City of Sunburg is not a commercial entity, use of this logo will not negatively impact them (WP:NFCC#2). Use of this logo meets established Wikipedia standards (WP:NFCC#6)." (This rationale, as well as the proper copyright tag, meet WP:NFCC#10.)

It may look big and confusing, but most of the content in here can be easily copied with only a few modifications into other rationales, provided the image does indeed meet all of those conditions. The only other thing you'd need to worry about is finding the correct copyright tag; there is a list containing all of the most common ones at WP:TAGS/FU.

If you need help on figuring out what you can upload under fair use, you may also want to read the bottom portion of User:Hersfold/Adopt/Copyright - it gives a few examples of both appropriate and inappropriate applications of fair use. If you have any more questions, though, feel free to let me know - fair use is one of the more problematic bits here, and it's an excellent way to get in trouble if you mess stuff up... as you've apparently noticed. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:39, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Oh, that is embarrassing. If I could forget that my Contributions page was open for the whole world to see, then life would be happier (LOL). Thanks for the help; I will try it in a bit here. -BlueCaper (talk) 20:59, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:YukimuraSW.jpg)[edit]

Ambox warning blue.svg Thanks for uploading File:YukimuraSW.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:08, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for File:YukimuraSW.jpg}[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:YukimuraSW.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at [[Talk:File:ThemeofLuBu~DWFireMix.ogg]] with a link to where we can find that note.
  • If you hold the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on [[Talk:File:ThemeofLuBu~DWFireMix.ogg]].

However, for textual content, you may simply consider rewriting the content in your own words. Thank you.

File:ŌtaniYoshitsuguKessen.jpg listed for deletion[edit]

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, File:ŌtaniYoshitsuguKessen.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Files for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Peripitus (Talk) 02:21, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Hello. I do not see how File:ŌtaniYoshitsuguKessen.jpg could be replaced by free methods or fits the second criterion for non-free content. Please enlighten me in why it would. -BlueCaper (talk) 22:18, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
Hi Bluecaper, my argument for NFCC#1 is that he was alive until 1600 and there are either contemporary drawings of him or all images are simply made up. As a made up image it is no more or less relevant than any other possible freely created image of him. I can see what seems to be a statue of him - if correct a photo of this would do. Either the copyrighted image is based on a historical one or it is made up and thus of no more value than any other current image of a samurai of the same era. as for NFCC#2 - the non-free image is one that was created for commercial purposes and the copyright holder has the right to control copies. By hosting it here, not for discussion of the image itself but for decoration of an article on the image's subject, we are replacing their commercial right to control the image. This usage falls under the unacceptable usage points # 7, 8 and a number of other ones - Peripitus (Talk) 22:57, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
But it is not just a drawing; it is an official poster from the video game Kessen. It is something of popular fiction. Many Wikipedia pages about historical persona in popular fiction have these kinds of pictures in the appropriate section. It describes him in Kessen, not just a regular portrait of him. People are not required to pay for these.
Also, that statue is of Sanada Yukimura, not Ōtani Yoshitsugu. -BlueCaper (talk) 01:50, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Surely it is a commercial image created by Koei and either owned by them or Electronic arts. The fact that they don't sell this image does not remove its commercial nature. Advertising/promotional images are covered by the same copyright, and commercial considerations, as the object they are promoting. - see Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Unacceptable_use images section. As for the statue, the internet led me astray - Peripitus (Talk) 02:05, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
It is neither an advertisement nor a promotional image. It is just an image related to the game. It is owned by Koei and EA, but it is used non-commercially. -BlueCaper (talk) 02:30, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:DWStrikeforce.jpg)[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:DWStrikeforce.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. MrKIA11 (talk) 18:35, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: How do you make a GIF?[edit]

I saw the animation of that rocking elephant named Devi, and I would like to know how to make it. Could you please tell me? -BlueCaper (talk) 01:00, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
I used Adobe After Effects, but there are freeware solutions available... what type of file are you starting with? I don't know enough about Templates to answer your template questions, sorry... User:Pedant (talk) 05:25, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
I was just wondering what to use to make an animated GIF out of other pictures. I would use simple raster files, like BMP, PNG, or GIF. I want to learn how to animate at an amateur level. So I was just wondering how it's done. I'll get a free program to animate. I tried using Microsoft GIF Animator, but I could not get more than on slide on in the animation. Guess I'll have to keep looking, if Adobe After Effects is not free. -BlueCaper (talk) 13:05, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
That Devi movie was made from an .avi file (a video file made by the camera. If you are starting with photographic images, there's one group of programs, with video-to-.gif it's a different set, and with vector art.... a different set. What image-manipulation programs do you already have? What are you comfortable with? You can actually download most adobe products from their website, with a trial time period thing. User:Pedant (talk)
Category:Animation techniques is a good place to browse... http://www.amazing-kids.org/anilessons.html#lessons is a nice place for raw beginner ideas. If you tell me what you want to create, I may be able to suggest something as far as what software might be the best to try or might be free or...? User:Pedant (talk)
Also, this: old version of a page that was deleted, and redirected to another page is like a link list to mostly free animation software. User:Pedant (talk) 08:16, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject[edit]

I've been realy busy lately and I have been on Wiki, but not really with the Project that much. So I think we should get back to recruiting as soon as possible. I will go ahead and do thats soon, and you can help if you want.

P.S. If you want me to archive your discussion, I will.

--EveryDayJoe45 (talk) 19:25, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

I am constantly recruiting, whenever I see a benevolent editor of Warriors articles. Right now, I am awaiting the responses of User:Cronocke, User:DeathNomad, User:Cristian Cappiello, and User:Commander Shepard. I never saw the point in archiving. People can just click the "History" tab. -BlueCaper (talk) 20:05, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Adminship[edit]

I still strongly feel that you're not experienced enough to be an administrator. I would recommend you spend several more months involving yourself in administrative areas such as WP:XFD, New page patrol, and various backlog work to demonstrate your understanding of policies better. Your block last November will very likely take some time to recover from, and you'll need to demonstrate that the community would be able to trust you with the tools. I've left further advice on your RfA. Hersfold (t/a/c) 03:15, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

I concur with Hersfold - you're not ready yet, and your answers to the questions coupled with your block and your use of a shared account with two other users leave me worried of what would happen if you were an administrator at this point in time. That said, there is no reason that you can't be an administrator later in time. You might consider withdrawing per WP:NOTNOW at this point - this particular RfA is looking unlikely to pass. My suggestions for a future RfA - do some stuff which demonstrates that you have both moved on from the misunderstandings that got you blocked, and that show that you have a good grasp of policy, which appears to be a concern (and it is, at least for me). If you came back in six months or so demonstrating that you knew policy and took part in work at admin-related venues, and had completely disengaged from the sort of issues surrounding your block, I would more than likely support, as, I would imagine, would most others. Thanks, — neuro(talk)(review) 06:21, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
This list would be a good start. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:36, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
