Arab League, Djibouti and Somalia

This is regarding your comment "Djibouti and Somalia are hardly Arab states." The map in question is of the Arab League; these countries are its members. It is not up to us to decide that they "are hardly Arab states". Thanks. ←Humus sapiens ^ну? 01:31, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I assume you are referring to my change on Image:Israel_and_Arab_states_map_k.png. The map in question is *NOT* a map of the Arab League - if it were it would include the Comoros as in Image:Map_of_League_of_Arab_States_countries.png, which would further skew the focus of the map and make the critical region harder to see. Djibouti and Somalia both have less than 15% Arab minorities. Furthermore, there has never been significant bad will between Israel and these nations, so including them is misleading on two levels. If you want to change the map's description to say "members of the Arab League and Israel" fine, go for it. In sum, the version of the map with Djibouti and Somalia excluded is more accurate. Thanks you for your response, but sorry I am not going to get into this discussion again. Please see Talk:Arab-Israeli_conflict/Archive_6#Should_Iran_be_included?. You'll see that it was I who proposed to include Iran and then agreed not to. You'll find some info on Somalia there also. Let me just say here that, as members of the AL, these countries supported this bloc's policies such as Khartoum Resolution and used their voices at the UN in what they see as their common struggle. There is clearly no consensus on the talk page, with 2 sides (1 of which appears to be comprised mostly if not exclusively of you). I'm sorry, I don't accept your argument that there was an agreement there just because you object personally. Yes, I uploaded that image into commons and added a note about it. Sorry if that standard procedure somehow hurt your feelings. In the future please try to focus on the argument and not on the opponent.

Somalia: A failed state, warlords dominate the country, political violence and banditry have been endemic since 1991, no national judicial system, 80 to 90% of the school-age population don't attend school, virtually all females genitally mutilated during childhood [1] but this is what Somalia proclaims at the UN: "...There are those who violate these lofty principles with impunity. Israel is an example in this regard. The continued Israeli occupation of Arab lands, seized by war, denying the Palestinian people their dignity, daily killings of Palestinian children, siege of the legitimate leader of the Palestinian people and calls by Israeli officials for his killing, the suffering and daily humiliations inflicted on the Palestinian people are of great concern to the international community." [2]. AFAIK, Somalia and Djibouti (as all other AL members) participated in all anti-Israel activities dictated by that bloc. I'm not sure what Somalia's internal struggles have to do with your argument, but for the sake of discussion: many countries including many Western European states have condemned Israel for its bombing of civilians in the recent conflict in Lebanon. Does that mean that those states are "Arab" as well? Clearly, to express support for countries at war with Israel does not an Arab country make. Brianski 17:09, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

I really don't agree with your reasoning for the removal of these two countries from the map. These kinds of maps always include Somalia and Djibouti since they are members of the Arab league. While Israel probably has never been too concerned with them, there has long been signifigant ill will towards the Israelis. While the population only includes about 15% of people who identify themselves as Arabic like you stated, the fact is that Arab culture is more dominant and mainstream than any other culture in either of the nations.- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 15:48, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

1) Both these countries are members of the Arab League. 2) Both these countries participate in all anti-Israel initiatives of the Arab League. But there is no reason to crosspost the same discussion. I couldn't have said it better than Hexagon1 did. I really couldn't have done it without you, pretty much all I did was come up with the idea of grouping areas to make it "one click accessible", which seemed to be the "holy grail" of Wikipedia maps. But I deliberately chose your work to work off because I fell in love with your base map (shh, don't tell my wife!) It was the best map I'd come across in a LONG while (and I've been passingly interested in cartography for about 25 years now!) and it made my grouping so easy! When I visited your talk page just now I was surprised that you weren't awarded a barnstar before Hexagon1 corrected the oversight, but I second it. Wholeheartedly. (Now, let's get to work on that "helping others use SVG" part, we really need to step up efforts. Speedy deletion of Template:000000

A tag has been placed on Template:000000 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

Graphics

I am sorry to have upset you (and no doubt everyone else) by changing that map online (which was already used elsewhere on wikipedia (at least at the time) on Anjouan/Comoros pages). I want to get a map online for the old administrative districts of medieval wales - known as Cantrefi. If i were to trace the borders using tracing paper and pencil from a book and then scan that tracing, and then recolour it etc - would this render it an original drawing? Hi James, sorry if I came off a bit harsh, please don't stop contributing because you are afraid of copyrights, just do a little homework first so you we can keep your contributions! It's frustrating to have to throw out good content because we can't use it! I'm glad to see you are reading your feedback page and seeing that there is a problem - I figured you weren't seeing it / were ignoring it. My mistake not to assume good faith! In any event, I'm not an expert on copyrights, as I mostly upload current maps, and I can get the base data from NASA, which is all public domain. I saw on your talk page a link to the media copyright questions page, which is probably a good place to start. About world maps

Hiya, there. You seem to have uploaded one of the more exacting SVG maps of the world, with very fine areal subdivisions. If so, might you be interested in some funky ideas wrt that, which Wikipedia hardly supports at the moment? This sort of thing would best be fleshed out over email or IRC, I think. Zeroisation and compiler optimisation

Hello Brianski, just saw your question "how does compiler optimisation make zeroisation more challenging?" that you made in an edit comment back on 27th January. Other than my hand-written course notes I don't have to hand a reference to meet your citation request (and can't be bothered looking for one), but I know the answer to your question. If you perform an operation to overwrite a sensitive value, and then free that memory without ever reading back the new value, an optimising compiler may "optimise away" the overwrite. That is, it deems the overwrite to be a useless operation because the value is never read back, and so the compiled object code completely omits the overwrite!! You have source code that says "overwrite this value" and object code that doesn't actually do so!! -- 203.20.101.203 (talk) 01:25, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
