Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Herbert Hyland may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Hi, Canola88! I have fixed this missing bracket for you. You can delete this message from your talk page if you want. BracketBot is a bit annoying but nonetheless useful. Kerry (talk) 08:06, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome[edit]

I'm a real person saying hello and thanking you for your edit to Herbert Hyland. (The messages above are automated). Welcome to Wikipedia! Kerry (talk) 07:44, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you look top right of your screen, you will see the Watchlist. This enables you to be informed on changes that happen on articles of interest to you. You can configure how you are notified of changes via the Preferences (also top right of screen). That is how I knew so quickly that someone had edited Herbert Hyland. I wasn't stalking you or anything :-) Kerry (talk) 08:02, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I should have mentioned that you click on the star (to the right of the Wikilove heart) to watch an article (which automatically watches its Talk page too). Or click the box near the SAVE button when you edit. Or set it in your preferences to always watch any page you edit (you can unwatch by clicking the star again later). Thank you greatly for your tips. I'm nearly done looking at this page, I'm just wondering one thing you may be able to advise me on. I've got a photocopy of a letter from Mr.Hyland from before his wedding day, stating that he did not want to marry his second wife. Apparently he was forced into it. The lady I received the letter from (his daughter in law) stated she would like to see it on Wiki. Is that acceptable to post on the page, or should I leave it? I've heard quite a few anecdotes confirming this at the community centre, however only want to go off of written facts. Thanks!Canola88 (talk) 08:24, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's reasonable to add the details of the 2nd marriage. But my feeling is that, unless the second wife or the marriage had any wider significance, then how he felt about her is probably not "encyclopaedic". Also dying in 1970 means that he is likely to have living relatives who knew him personally and may not be happy to see family gossip broadcast in that way. Also as it is less than 70 years since he died, the letter itself is still in copyright, so cannot be uploaded without the consent of the copyright holder. For all of these reasons, I'd just stick to stating that he married SoAndSo at PLACE on DATE.Kerry (talk)
Also, on Wikipedia, we try to avoid "conflict of interest" editing, where you edit an article where you have some close personal or financial relationship with the subject matter. This isn't the case for you personally with Herbert Hyland but, if you take direction from a relative of his, then it starts to become borderline. It's OK for editors to make edits because someone asks them (lots of people aren't confident to edit Wikipedia themselves) but we should only do it if we feel confident that we are doing it to create a better encyclopedia and not for some other reason. Really, thanks a lot for your input. That's the one thing I was worried about - I didn't want to annoy anybody currently living, and dirty laundry really doesn't belong in an Encyclopedia. I'm currently introducing elderly people the the internet and genealogy, hence everything is exciting and emotional for them. Thanks again!Canola88 (talk) 06:34, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
