Rumelia[edit]

Okay, Britannica might be one source, but any Turkish dictionary you open you'll find out that 'rum' translates to 'Greek' or in modern times 'Greek of turkish citizenship'[1][2][3]. Most importantly, there's a different word to say "Roman". 'Rum' comes from the Arabic 'Ram', which was a name for Byzantium and sometimes for ancient Greece. Either way in post-Byzantine times 'Rum' refers only to Greeks, and it's still in used today for Greeks of Turkish citizenship and Cypriots. Denying this fact is like reducing the status of ethnic Greeks in Turkey and Cyprus to a subjet people who doesn't have the right to claim an ethnicity. Miskin 20:56, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure. If you look at Category:Islands of Turkey and Category:Islands in the Sea of Marmara, you'll see that both are used. I guess it depends on which island, but we should use whatever name is most common in English. I prefer "Marmara Island" over "Marmara Adası", but I have no problem with just "Avşa". I guarantee you, Tahn is exactly the same as Ayran. Oghuz Turks[edit]

Hey. The source is very outdated. Since then, genetic testing has been done, and genetic testing has shown no Oghuz descent. RE Turkish Cuisine[edit]

The problem is that you should first put how a thing is called in Turkish and then in brackets. For example I think it is better to first give "sucuk" as it is and to write thereafter its pronounciation "sujuk". The same thing can be said for musakka, pilav etc.

None of the information I have put so far is redundant. Sometimes I may be tired and careless about grammar and wording however I am always coming back to correct or improve the text. But senseless/baseless removals make me upset gentlemen! Paranteze Turkcesi de alinabilir ama duz yazi olmamak kaydiyla, yani renkli olmali ki yemek adi gorunsun. Lokum mesela. Elbet Turkish delight denecek ama lokum da yazilacak. Adamlar bizim fonetik uzerinden ingilizce yaziyorlar zaten. Yani simdi kofte'ye sadece meatball yazsak olur mu?

Su kirmizi mavi meselesine gelince o isin teknik kismi, diger article'lara referans mavilerle otomatik olarak veriliyor zaten. Dikkat ederseniz diger cuisine article'larinda da hep boyle. Illa renkli yazimin arkasinda bir article olmasi gerekmiyor.

Sometimes repetition turns out to be inevitable. I think it is necessary/better to explain specialities by setting out their similarities to and differences from other dishes and by making references to other titles. Dolma for instance. Ok there is a part dedicated to dolma but it should be mentionned in the vegetarian dishes part as well. Turkish Cuisine[edit]

I sincerely do not agree that coloring the names of the specialities harms readibility. On the contrary, if we transform it into a paper without any difference in presentation (plain black), it would be less interesting from readers' perspective. Cause most of the time you pick the words and then read it.

Yaylag[edit]

Thanks for removing the categories from my Talk page, but I placed back the List of Turkish words category to the Yaylag page, since there is no Turkic words category, while yaylag definitely belongs to Turkish as well as to all Turkic languages. Plus many in West, and even Turkey, don't differentiate between Turkic vs. Turk, even calling Kirgiz, Uzbek, Kazakh as "Turk lehcesi", or Turkish dialect, as opposed to language. A low birth rate, the exhaustion of the male population by military service, and great mortality from epidemics, against which Moslem fatalism takes no pre-cautions, have brought about a decline which has latterly been hastened by emigration

The Turkish rural population is found in three principal groups:

the most easterly extends from the Mesta to Drama, Pravishta and Orfano, reaching the sea-coast on either side of Kavala, which is partly Turkish, partly Greek.
The second, or central group begins on the sea-coast, a little west of the mouth of the Strymon, where a Greek population intervenes, and extends to the north-west along the Kara-Dagh and Belasitza ranges in the direction of Strumnitza, Veles, Shtip and Radovisht.
The third, or southern, group is centred around KAILAR, an entirely Turkish town, and extends from Lake Ostrovo to Selfije (Servia). The Byzantines retained the southern regions and Salonica, which temporarily fell into the hands of the Saracens in 904. With the exception of the 1 Also Alexander, Perdiccas, Philip, &c. maritime districts, the whole of Macedonia formed a portion of the empire of the Bulgarian tsar Simeon (893-927); the Bulgarian power declined after his death, but was revived in western Macedonia under the Shishman dynasty at Ochrida; Tsar Samuel (976-1014), the third ruler of that family, included in his dominions Uskiib, Veles, Vodena and Melnik. After his defeat by the emperor Basil II. in 1014 Greek domination was established for a century and a half. The Byzantine emperors endeavoured to confirm their positions by Asiatic colonization; Turkish immigrants, afterwards known as Vardariotes, the first of their race who appeared in Macedonia, were settled in the neighbourhood of Salonica in the 9th century; colonies of Uzes, Petchenegs and Kumans were introduced at various periods from the 11th to the 13th century. While Greeks and Bulgarians disputed the mastery of Macedonia the Vlachs, in the 10th century, established an independent state in the Pindus region, which, afterwards known as Great Walachia, continued to exist till the beginning of the 14th century. In 1185 southern Macedonia was exposed to a raid of the Normans under William of Sicily, who captured Salonica and massacred its inhabitants. After the taking of Constantinople in 1204 by the Franks of the fourth crusade, the Latin empire of Romania was formed and the feudal kingdom of Thessalonica was bestowed on Boniface, marquis of Montferrat; this was overthrown in 1222 by Theodore, despot of Epirus, a descendant of the imperial house of the Comneni, who styled himself emperor of Thessalonica and for some years ruled over all Macedonia. He was defeated and captured by the Bulgarians in 1230 and the remnant of his possessions, to which his son John succeeded, was absorbed in the empire of Nicaea in 1234. Bulgarian rule was now once more established in Macedonia under the powerful monarch Ivan Asen II. (1218-1241) whose dynasty, of Vlach origin, had been founded at Trnovo in 1186 after a revolt of the Vlachs and Bulgars against the Greeks. A period of decadence followed the extinction of the Asen dynasty in 1257; the Bulgarian power was overthrown by the Servians at Velbuzhd (1330), and Macedonia was included in the realm of the great Servian tsar Dushan (1331-1355) who fixed his capital at Uskiib. Dushan's empire fell to pieces after his death, and the anarchy which followed prepared the way for the advance of the Turks, to whom not only contending factions at Constantinople but Servian and Bulgarian princes alike made overtures.

Macedonia and Thrace were soon desolated by Turkish raids; when it was too late the Slavonic states combined against the invaders, but their forces, under the Servian tsar Lazar, were routed at Kossovo in 1389 by the sultan Murad I. Salonica and Larissa were captured in 1395 by Murad's son Bayezid, whose victory over Sigismund of Hungary at Nicopolis in 1396 sealed the fate of the peninsula. The towns in the Struma valley were yielded to the Turks by John VII. The Qajar Dynasty of Persia popularized Baklava within its domain as well as in many of these countries. In order to validate this fact, it is necessary to mention it along with the Ottoman Empire. If you look in article of Aybak you will see below in the succession box that Al-Mansur Ali is red and not linked. The same is in page of Saif ad-Din Abu-Bakr the name Kujuk in the succession box also not linked. the two sultans were not very significant and thus there is no much to say about them. In itself this is not a real problem. But there are people here who as soon as I start an article jump in and try to delete it with the excuse that the Sultan was not important and therefore does not deserve an article. But this makes it hard to link the articles of the Mamluks sultans as some names in the succession box remain red and thus reader can not follow. What do you think ? Is here someone we can talk with about ? so that we can add the two sultans with little info but with succession box so that the circle is complete. Please let me know about your opinion. I'm not sure that the word "Kalpak" can be considered to "come from" the Turkic words. I wouldn't consider Kalpak to be an English word in its own right, but rather simple usage of the various Turkic forms in English. (In response to your response on my talk page.) Hm, I think they're all basically the same thing. There're a lot of pages I've encountered recently (all Central Asia-themed, but that might just be because of what I've been poking at) which talk about a sometimes wide variety of things that fall under one term (whether the term is even cognate across languages), but have differences depending on region, etc. Some examples include qurut, plov, and samsa (donno why food are the first examples that came to mind, hmm).

Given this sort of thing—which is probably appropriate—I'd say that keeping calpack and kalpak as one article is probably the best route. They really are the same thing, just with regional variation. An example of something that's not like this might be kobyz and komuz, where the word is the same, but the regional differences in use have resulted in two distinct things which should probably have separate names in English (and likewise, the references to Azeri and Caucasian instruments in the komuz article are probably inappropriate).

So what do you think?

P.S. Starling should be used with a grain of salt, since its intended purpose is to demonstrate "proto-World," and even a specific fringe theory within that fringe field. That said, it can be useful to find a word's cognates across Turkic. —Firespeaker (talk) 05:54, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so I think the questions have become:

If we consider Calpac(k) an English word, what's the pronunciation?
How do we reword it to say that the English word comes from Turkic without taking a position on which Turkic language it came from? Or, if we think it's from Turkish specifically, then what do we do with the other Turkic cognates?
What does the word mean in English (if different from the Turkic words), and how (if at all) should the usages be indicated as distinct in the article?

Given those questions, I propose the following solution, in the form of an outline for reformatting the article:

"Calpack [and variants...] (/ˈkælpæk/???) is an English term of Turkish origin (Turkish: kalpak, IPA: [kɑlpɑk])[source] referring to a type of high-crowned hat, usually made of felt or sheepskin, worn by men across the Near East, including ... (or whatever...). It can also refer to specific styles of hats in these areas, e.g., Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, etc."

Support for deleting the Category:Anti-Armenianism[edit]

Will you support my arguement for the deletion of the Category:Anti-Armenianism that I put forward on May 1, 2009?

It is very subjective and even racist as it puts every person who questions the Armenian genocide, such as prominent academicians, who are not racist or personally against Armenian people or Armenia as an entity, along with assasins and militants.

Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey)[edit]

Hi. I was wondering if you'd be interested in setting up Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey), based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). Now it's not a contest in itself, it's designed to motivate people to inspire others to improve content and build something which demonstrates the hard work going into the country which is visible. The focus is more on quality improvements but new articles are welcome too. Eventually a Turkish National Contest could be created to fuel it, like Wikipedia:Awaken the Dragon, in which contestants can choose to keep the Amazon vouchers themselves to buy their own books for more articles or put them into book fund to help editors further improve Turkish-related topics by giving them the books they want. It will begin though as purely an improvement drive. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!
