Another signature

Could you see what you can do with File:John-Sherman-Cooper-sig.jpg. The removal of surrounding marks and conversion to JPEG were not kind to parts of this signature, particularly the "J". SVG would be better here, anyway, obviously. Acdixon (talk · contribs · count) 19:26, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

I'll give this a crack. – Connormah (talk) 00:42, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Re:FPC

Possibly. The hand in the way of the face and the odd background are possible negatives, but even worse is the overexposed head versus underexposde clothing. Worth a shot, maybe- it does have some charisma. J Milburn (talk) 09:46, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

University of Pittsburgh seal

Please refrain from further edits in articles that introduce the simplified version of the University of Pittsburgh seal. The current, correct seal for use in the university infobox at current size and resolution is the previously used image: File:UofPittsburgh Seal.svg or File:University of Pittsburgh logo.png. Thank you. CrazyPaco (talk) 06:46, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

I added it from the official visual identity guide. I haven't seen it used currently, could you point me to it's use? The updated one seems more modern and up-to date and is in their guides. – Connormah (talk) 13:49, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
The style guide you are referring to is applicable to the university's print and web marketing only. The simplified seal is essentially a logo, and is not the official seal of the university. It is primarily used when the reproduction of the fine detail in the official seal is unsuitable, such as in small scale reproductions found in the university's word mark logo, letterheads, web banners, or silk-screened or applique-stitched merchandise. The simplified seal is not newer. It has always existed along-side the official seal since its official adoption in 1993, with modified colors in 1997 (see my webpage here for the only history of the university's seals that you'll find anywhere). To see examples of the use of the official seal, you'll have to refer to official university documents, regalia, diplomas, publications or large scale signage. Examples of this can be found on diplomas, the cover of the recently released 2011 Fiscal Year Financial Report or in the university's fact books. For a full color example, see page two of this report from the university's chancellor's office.CrazyPaco (talk) 17:17, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
Understood. Thank you for the clarification. Additionally, is there any chance you could locate another PDF with a full color version? I colored the current SVG one we have pretty sloppily and would like to get an official version. Thanks. – Connormah (talk) 22:08, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for the svg version by the way. I actually think it is quite good at least at the size rendered in the infobox. I will look around for a .pdf with a full color version. CrazyPaco (talk) 02:21, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
No problem. The other PDF you provided above is password protected, so I can't access it. Thanks in advance for searching. – Connormah (talk) 02:22, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Try this one, second to last page (inside the back cover). I believe it is unprotected: 2009-Annual-Report.pdf. CrazyPaco (talk) 07:53, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Right you are. Thanks. Will get it uploaded shortly. – Connormah (talk) 13:53, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Harold Hess

The WWI draft card confirms that they are the same person. It gives the same DOB and identifies him as an agricultural student at Penn State College. The California death records from 1982 matches, showing the same date and state of birth. Cbl62 (talk) 23:34, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

Walter F. Kelly

Connormah, I saw the reference that you added to Walter F. Kelly, which looks like your source for the DOD and DOB, etc that you added. I can only see bits of piece of page 273 there by playing around with the search terms, but can't get his DOD visible. How's you get that to come up? Thanks. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:08, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

It was from the same reference - see the second hit here: [1] - Google Books can be sticky at times, but you can usually pull things out like this. – Connormah (talk) 04:20, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for that link. Would be nice to get at the bulk of that bio for some more detail. I'm trying to definitively tie the Dartmouth-Texas Kelly to the coaching stints at Butler. That he died in Indianapolis is suggestive that he's the right guy. The NCAA database lists Walter F. "Mike" Kelly (Dartmouth, 1892) for the Butler stints in football, basketball, and baseball. The grad year from Dartmouth looks wrong there, but again it all seems to be the same guy. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:25, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Nice. Thanks for working the search terms there. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:33, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Harry Orman Robinson

Connormah, where did you find Harry Orman Robinson's DOB? I see you added it, but didn't cite a source. Thanks. Jweiss11 (talk) 20:11, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Fair use image license

Did you pull the DOB and DOD for Caraway from Social Security Death Index? I'm not sure that's the right guy. Jweiss11 (talk) 01:51, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, it was from the SSDI - a UMass Yearbook listed his YOB as 1905 (and full name) - I'm pretty sure it is the right guy. – Connormah (talk) 01:54, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Connormah. You have new messages at Fumitol's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

A few items

Connormah, great stuff the last few days with the pictures and detective work on the vital stats for all those old coaches. I want to point out a number of items that will make your edits even better and keep things ordered.

1) When you upload new images, it would be great if you could tag the talk page of those images with the appropriate college sports project banners. See File talk:Paul B Williams Ball State.jpg for an example of these tags.

2) In cases where you uploaded a new, better fair-use image to replace another fair use image, as you did for John Magnabosco, instead of making a brand new file, it would be cleaner from a house-keeping perspective if you just uploaded the new file as a new version of the existing file, the update the source notes accordingly.

3) When you add or flesh out vitals stats (DOB, DOD, place of birth and death), it would be great if you could also update the relevant fields in the Persondata table at the bottom of the article, and also update the relevant categories for birth and death year.

4) When adding external references, an improvement would be to make use of citation templates like Template:Cite web or Template:Cite news. You can easily pull the code from the common form examples in the template documentation. If you feel like going ahead and fleshing out some of the fields in those templates, that would be even better. Also, it's preferable to place references in the body of the article over the infobox.

5) When adding yearbook images to the infobox, I've been noting the source of the picture in the caption. I think this works really well. See Appleton A. Mason for an example.

Thanks and keep up the great work! Jweiss11 (talk) 03:42, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

Will try, but I'm very lazy. Thanks for the note. – Connormah (talk) 05:21, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

Poague

Nice catch with the spelling on Henry Poague. Looks like the present-day VMI football records have it wrong. Did you read Poague's little bio from the 1910 yearbook. Priceless. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:00, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

That's awesome! Nice little touch :) – Connormah (talk) 04:08, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

George W. Hoskins

I'm not sure it's the same guy. But ancestry.com has a death record for a George W Hoskins, born 1865, resident of Cincinnati. Died 22 Jan 1958 at his home in Cincinnati. Age at Death: 93. Cbl62 (talk) 02:58, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

On William Burr Hopkins, there is a photo there with the passport application, but it's a very poor quality pic. I could upload it, but the quality is really poor. Cbl62 (talk) 05:34, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
yes. Wagonhurst is very good in comparison.

Cold Lake

Hi Connormah, do you have access to OTRS by any chance? If you refer to ticket:2011112910034645, it is in reference to Cold Lake, Alberta, and they have provided new logos in jpg and pdf format. Obviously I can process the ticket if needed, but as you did the SVG versions of the logo in the infobox, if you have OTRS you might like to take the ticket over and do the svg versions of these files? Alternatively, if you would like to email me, I can forward to you the PDF file for the SVGing? Whatever it easier; if you are interested that is. Cheers Russavia Let's dialogue 17:24, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

I have uploaded the logo to File:City of Cold Lake logo.png and have replaced usage in the infobox. If there is any chance you wanted to create the SVG from that file it would be great (of if you need the PDF let me know). Cheers, Russavia Let's dialogue 17:48, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

New Jersey

I am going to try to visit at least one of your points of interest on Friday. Could you just put in a compact form here or on my talk the towns, names, and aliases, etc.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:29, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

I can email you a document with all I know, if it helps. I believe I may have your email from past correspondence. Many thanks for the help, – Connormah (talk) 22:34, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
You likely do. OK, I will look it over when I get it. Ridgefield Park is the most likely, from what I remember of what you said.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:06, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
OK, got it. I will make a couple of calls on Monday. If he was at Bergen Pines, that means he was mentally ill, no question, that fits with "unemployed due to illness". I am surprised to see it listed in as in Ridgewood, to the best of my knowledge it's always been in Paramus. Very odd.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:42, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
It is on Ridgewood Avenue, though, as I recall. Could there be a confusion in the source?--Wehwalt (talk) 23:43, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Double checked and it does indeed say Ridgewood. Strange, possibly there was a community named Bergen Pines also? – Connormah (talk) 23:46, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Re: your previous comment, possibly. I also do see his WW1 draft card but I can't access it. Will try to get info from it though. – Connormah (talk) 23:51, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
BTW, his father in-law and brother-in-law have pages here. – Connormah (talk) 23:56, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Interesting. Can you check the New Jersey Historical Society website to see if they have anything that might help you? I am going Thursday afternoon, then will go to the Devils game that night. I haven't been since they moved into the new arena.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:10, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
On Bergen Pines: Possible, and it is close to the Ridgewood/Paramus border. It's even possible the border has shifted around it over the years, there have possibly been land swaps, and this, since it is county-owned and not taxable, could easily have been swapped. I'll look into it. New Jersey history, I'd talk to User:Alansohn, he seems to be in all the local articles.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:13, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
Ah, I'll send some emails this Monday. Who are the Devils playing that night? I hear the arena is very nice...are you a big hockey fan? – Connormah (talk) 00:19, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
I once was, but rarely go these days. I saw them win the first Cup in 1995. But it is such a hassle to go, especially in Newark. At least the Meadowlands had big parking lots and if you knew your way around, you could get out in no time after the game.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:23, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Gustave May

I migrated the article to Familypedia at [4], that way if you want you can create articles on the parents and siblings, you can also upload the census images and draft registration. It is a nice way to keep all documents together. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 22:11, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Ridgefield Park redux

The clerk was supposed to call me, but has not done so. I don't think this can be adequately handled by phone, I will go there again next time I am in North jersey and look at the records for that address. If either May or his son died while owning it, I may be able to get a date of death. But I am reasonably certain that they would never do anything by phone as I am not a resident of the village (not rules or anything, it will just be low priority)--Wehwalt (talk) 15:29, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

I see. Thanks for doing this again, much, much appreciated. Leave me a note when you're headed back to North Jersey. – Connormah (talk) 01:31, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

AF Generals

Thank You VERY much for adding the pictures to the Generals pages. Am I allowed to copy the pictures from the AF Bios of these other Generals (Maj Gen Philip G. Killey, Major General Donald William Shepperd, Maj Gen Paul A. Weaver Jr., Lt. Gen. Daniel James III) also or should I let one of you admins do that? I normally get my pictures deleted for copy-vio (frustrating) unless I take the picture with my camera. - Geek2003 (talk) 23:12, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, no problem...as long as the photos look to be official portraits taken by the Air Force (flags in back, in uniform...), they should be okay. – Connormah (talk) 00:47, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
  • Should General's titles be removed? I was looking at the other pages of AF Generals and many of them have their rank before their names that is why I added it, but I noticed that you removed the rank from several that we were working on. Should I remove the rank from all the other AF Generals? - Geek2003 (talk) 14:51, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Dean Martin

Let me have a look--is there anything specific you were looking for like from his television show? I'll have a look and if I come up with anything, will upload it to Commons and post the file links for you here. We hope (talk) 18:43, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Found some for Dean Martin and will be uploading them to Commons. Two are with Frank Sinatra. One goes back to his days with Jerry Lewis (first PD one I've found with enough information on it to date and attribute properly). Will upload and leave the links here for you when I'm done. A lot of what's there at present is clearly marked as copyrighted stills or publicity photos from Martin's films and wire photos, but this can change if more newspapers do more cleaning of their media files and they come up for sale.
Will look for Alan Ladd and see what's around. Sometimes where you get lucky with someone who's primarily a film star is if he/she did guest appearances on television shows, did radio shows or did some Broadway work, as these photos were rarely copyrighted until after 1977. If I don't find anything for him, I'll keep my eyes open for anything that works and will upload it to Commons and let you know here. ;-) We hope (talk) 19:46, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Indianapolis Colts helmet rightface.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Indianapolis Colts helmet rightface.svg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mtking (edits) 01:09, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Photos request

Connormah, I see where you're a prolific photo uploader, which is great because Wikipedia articles are improved exponentially when there are photographs in them. That being said, I have a special request (from me personally, although I'm also doing it on behalf of WikiProject College basketball): Is there any way that you could add photos to all of the consensus All-Americans, which date back to 1905? Each of the navigational boxes used for the consensus AAs can be found at Category:American college basketball consensus All-American navigational boxes, which will give you a good reference to see what you'd be working with. Since consensus All-Americans are the top basketball players in the nation every year, adding photos of them would is a much-needed addition. Thoughts? Jrcla2 (talk) 18:54, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Connormah,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 02:40, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for asking, but I don't feel that I'm as active as an admin to give a complete interview at this time. Good luck with your class, sounds like a great idea! – Connormah (talk) 02:43, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

A couple image suggestions

I just saw your request for images at WPDC. I work in DC and can try and get some if you give me the list I will see what I can do. I may take me a while though. I don't get up there very often and its knowwhere near a metro stop. Also, Edsu works at the Library of Congress and might have some ideas and Sadads used to work for the US Army Center of Military History and might have a point of contact of someone who would be willing to look for them there. --Kumioko (talk) 04:26, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the interest! I've emailed around recently (to the Commands the generals held) and am waiting to hear back, but expect to be turned to the NARA or ignored. I'll also send in a request to the still pictures division to have them send me accession numbers to maybe make retrieval easier. The list is at the GLAM/NARA/Requests page, but I can narrow it down (most already have portraits, but they are low quality/wrong rank etc). The only other option is to pay private vendors at NARA to do the scans for me, which would end up costing me a great deal of money that I can't pay, so I appreciate the offer. The top names/images I'd like on my list currently are Orval R. Cook's 4 star portrait (BcNARApix had mentioned that he couldn't find one but looked again in the color negatives and found one), Maurice A. Preston's 4 star portrait, Thomas Patrick Gerrity's 4 star portrait (if it does exist, though it should) and possibly something of better quality for Louis T. Seith, William V. McBride and George J. Eade (preferably color, 4 star). There is more, but these names are good to start. Thanks again, drop me a note on my talk if you are able to get in and take a look. – Connormah (talk) 04:35, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
Ok I'll start with these and see what I can do. --Kumioko (talk) 04:46, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks a bunch! Ping me on talk or shoot an email to cmahh@shaw.ca if you get anything! Thanks, – Connormah (talk) 05:30, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
One more thing, can you add Edwin R. Chess to the list? In his case we'd be looking for a two-star portrait (hopefully color) as chief of chaplains of USAF. Thanks again! I'll keep you posted on if I get any emails in the coming days and maybe we can cross some names off (when do you roughly plan to go in?). The records you probably want to look in are –
Record group: Record Group 342: Records of Airforce Commands, Activities and Organizations (ARC identifier: 654)
Series: KE: Color Photographs of U.S. Air Force Activities, Facilities, and Personnel, Domestic and Foreign, compiled ca. 1940 - ca. 1980
Record group: Record Group 342: Records of Airforce Commands, Activities and Organizations (ARC identifier: 654)
Series: Photographs of Air Force Officers and Officials, compiled 1960 - 1981. I will also email NARA tomorrow for additional names on the list to get sent more images of interest for them (maybe Dominic or someone else can scan those) to help accelerate the process. – Connormah (talk) 06:25, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
