[edit] War Books re-assessment

Hi,
You have re-rated all my pages from List to Start.
But they are list pages, not regular articles.
Other projects like to classify them as List.
Why the difference this time?
Thanks, Varlaam (talk) 16:14, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Burmese–Siamese War (1548–49)

Please re- assess the article: Burmese–Siamese War (1548–49). I have added many Supporting materials, please keep in mind that any contemporary pictorial depiction is extremely rare. Sodacan (talk) 18:06, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] SS Beaverburn (1944)

Re your assessment of this article as stub class - there is no way that the article is as low as that. Please see WP:MHA for a guide on how to assess an article and particularly the quality scale. I have removed the stub class from the article in the hope that it will be assessed correctly the next time.

This is not a WP:OWN issue, but editors spend a good deal of time creating articles, and for some of them such an assessment would be very downheartening - especially if that editor was relatively new to Wikipedia. I've just spent about 12-15 hours creating my latest article, which has about 38k of text. How would you feel if you'd spent that much time on an article only to have an editor assess it as a stub?! This is why assessment of an article should be done in a methodical manner, paying attention to the various assessment criteria and whether or not the article meets them. It is not something to be taken lightly or half-heartedly. Mjroots (talk) 19:24, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

I thought I'd let you know that there's a discussion about this and related matters at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history#Assessment problems. Ranger Steve (talk) 21:50, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
Apologies if I came across a bit harsh at Milhist, but it did appear that there may have been a major problem with your assessments. I did ask another admin about possibly restricting you from assessment but he's not replied although he has been active since I posted on his talk page. I'm assuming that this means he considers this is not necessary and I'll not pursue that matter. I'm sure there was no malicious intent in your assessments of the articles in question. I did raise the first case with you (Beaverbrook), but on discovering a further problem I decided to raise it with Milhist, which is fortunately quite an active project. Some good points are being raised there and hopefully some good will come out of this. Mjroots (talk) 06:34, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
I haven't made any assessments at all since you raised the issue, voluntarily, and I don't hold it against you bringing the issue to the MilHist project as a whole. It's a great group of people there and its an issue that wikipedia as a whole has trouble handiling. While I think asking for a restriction on me might have been a little bit of overkill, you were doing something you thought necessary for the betterment of the whole, so I'm ok with it.Cromdog (talk) 17:07, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
Time to move on a little here. As I said, I don't believe there was anything malicions in your assessing of articles and thus it was not intentionally disruptive or vandalism.
The way I assess articles is this - I have a window open with the article, and another open editing the talk page. I've got a sheet of paper printed out with the six B class criteria. I go through each of the B class criteria in turn. IMHO, B1 means a minimum of one reference per paragraph - any unreferenced statements and it's a no. B2 is fairly self explanatory. You should be able to tell if there are any obvious omissions. Inaccuracies are a little harder to spot if you are not familiar with the subject. B3 is also fairly self explanatory. A big clue here is the presence of a contents box. If an article hasn't got many sections then the box doesn't appear. B4 means that it is reasonable legible and intelligible. Odd typos, grammatical errors etc can be disregarded. B5 is self evident. Again, IMHO, a ship article should have an infobox. Photos are not so important. With any ship in service in the 60 or so years, photos are likely to be under copyright. There are lots of photos I could have used under "fair use" rules, but I mostly don't, providing ELs to photos instead. With the Ragnhild article I considered that the image was a really good one, and a strong case for fair use could be made. B6 (where supported by the WP) is also fairly self evident. This was introduced to cover articles where the use of technical jargon is necessary but which would not be readily understood by the layman. If an article meets B3, B4 and B5, then it makes C class if one of the other six criteria is not met. If any one or more of B3, B4 and B5 is not met, then the article is Start class even if the other five criteria are met. If an article meets all B class criteria then it can be graded as such.
Why not assess a few articles, then post on the Milhist thread that you've done so and invite other editors to comment on your assessment. If you find that there are no violent objections to your assessments then I'd say that there would be no reason to prevent you from continuing to assess articles. You may wish to reassess articles you've previously assessed, and regrade them if you find that the article was either wrongly graded or has been improved in the meantime. [edit] Linking to cats

In response to you "'Attention needed to tagging' issue" post at the Milhist talk page...I don't know how to help you in the main issue. However, I can help you with the smaller problem of linking to categories. Putting a ":" at the start of a category or image link will cause it to become a wikilink, instead of a category/image. So, [[Category:Military history articles needing attention to tagging]] would become [[:Category:Military history articles needing attention to tagging]] to display Category:Military history articles needing attention to tagging. -- saberwyn 02:32, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip, saberwyn. I don't remember ever having done that before...but I'm not sure I ever wikilinked a category before or not anyway. Thanks again! Cromdog (talk) 14:33, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
