Crocodilian

closed discussion

I know this year's WikiCup is coming to an end but would you like to work on Crocodilia with me? Maybe we can get it done for January. LittleJerry (talk) 01:39, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

I'd be delighted to work on Crocodilia with you, but not until after the end of October. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 04:56, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
So when you said "end of October" where you saying that just in case sea went on too long? LittleJerry (talk) 18:34, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
The WikiCup ends at the end of October so I will have more time then for other things. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:46, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
Let me know when you're ready. Could you work on Taxonomy and evolution (maybe by sandbox)? I could send/refer you some papers. I prefer we mostly re-write the article from scratch. LittleJerry (talk) 19:44, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
OK. I know little about crocodilians and will be learning as we go along. Any useful sources you have would be helpful. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 04:49, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Do you have books on reptiles and amphibians? I would recommend The Firefly Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians or Crocodile: Evolution's Greatest Survivor. LittleJerry (talk) 19:49, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
I have a very good book on amphibians. I'll see what the library has on reptiles. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:53, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Could you write in US English? LittleJerry (talk) 03:06, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
I can try. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 04:59, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Things now having eased off with regards to the WikiCup, I have made a start on the Taxonomy and evolution section(s) in my userspace. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:58, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
Okay them, I'll PM you some papers. Here's one that's free access [1]. LittleJerry (talk) 20:33, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
This article provides a clade tree for the modern species (expect for one). LittleJerry (talk) 18:14, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Great job on evolution and locomotion, could you maybe expand a little more on skins and scales? LittleJerry (talk) 22:18, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Sure. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:23, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
  • I intend to start working on thermoregulation as my book has a useful section. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:02, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Does the book contain more information on metabolism (which is related to cold-bloodedness) and sexual organs? LittleJerry (talk) 18:37, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Its got 15 pages on "Food and feeding habits", 6 pages on "Mortality and predators", 10 on "Social behaviour", 15 on "Reproduction" and 20 on "Habitats". Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:39, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Wow! Well feel free to join in on "Ecology and life history". I started on Feeding and was planning on "Reproduction and parenting" "Growth and mortality" and "Communication" subsections" Which of these would you be able to do? LittleJerry (talk) 19:45, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Shall I work on "Social behaviour" which would include "Communication"? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:04, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Okay. Although I already put in some information on that. LittleJerry (talk) 20:25, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Oh and when it comes to books that are edited and have multiple authors, each one should be credited. See Elephant for formatting. LittleJerry (talk) 23:43, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
I'll start working on reproduction and parenting. Should I get into courtship and such? That involves lots of communication. LittleJerry (talk) 17:04, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, carry on. As you may have noticed, I got sidetracked into Osmoregulation. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:08, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
I think it would be better if communication had its own section and I think reproductive behavior can include information on dominance hierarchies. I've included information on social spacing in the lead of "Ecology and behavior". You can expand it if you want. Could you also add more on habitats? LittleJerry (talk) 19:09, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Please fix the rest of the rest of the Ross citations. You can't cite the same thing twice. LittleJerry (talk) 21:40, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes I was thinking that would be a good idea but inertia ruled the day! What about the Griggs reference? The pdf link does not work, but also, the source is used multiple times and could be treated like a book as it has page numbers. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:24, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
The pdf link works for me. Also for Grigg we are only citing one page range/section. Not multiple throughout the book. LittleJerry (talk) 21:14, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
Grigg has 4 chapters on Crocodilians, so we might want to cite him as a book and then refer either to chapters or to specific page ranges. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:03, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
I think that is a good idea. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:09, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
I disagree, we are only citing one chapter/page range. LittleJerry (talk) 19:32, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
I'll probably spilt "respiration, circulation and digestion" into separate sections. I'll work on expanding the former two, could you do the latter? Maybe include excretion? LittleJerry (talk) 22:28, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
I will work on Digestion, but I think Excretion is sufficiently covered in the Osmoregulation section. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:09, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
It seems my Wyle book won't arrive until December. Does your book talk about crocodilians in popular culture? (I was thinking specifically of Wally Gator and the alligators from Fantasia) LittleJerry (talk) 23:57, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
I have returned my book to the library but could get it out again if required. I regard the culture section of the article as a necessary but bothersome section and my book is twenty years old. I will glance through it next time I am in town and will see if it has anything relevant. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:01, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
Okay then. Do you know how to copyedit? LittleJerry (talk) 14:23, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Oh, and does the book state the length and weight of the smallest crocodilians? (I could only find length). LittleJerry (talk) 14:31, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
It only had the length I think. I propose to leave copyediting to someone competent in American English spelling and phraseology. Instead, I will go through the references and try to iron out any inconsistencies. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:09, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
I just got my book. Unfortunately it doesn't mention the above examples, maybe yours will. LittleJerry (talk) 00:24, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
Neither of the croc books I now have do so either. However, the article is now (surely) easily ready for GA, and anything the reviewer suggests will probably be useful for further progress, so why don't we just go for it? Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:12, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
I will soon. LittleJerry (talk) 19:40, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Far be it from me, but perhaps we should work the Kleggs in somehow. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:10, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

GA review has begun. LittleJerry (talk) 21:12, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
Need you for GA review. LittleJerry (talk) 21:28, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
Does your book mention crocodilians eating amphibians? I wishing I could add them to this sentence ".....generalised diets and opportunistically feed on invertebrates, fish, snakes, turtles, birds, and mammals." my source does mention them. LittleJerry (talk) 01:12, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes it does. Crocodilia is now nominated for DYK. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:59, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
Okay, well please add the source and amphibian to the sentence. I think its ready for FAC after that. LittleJerry (talk) 02:02, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
For your information, I will be away from home and my computer until Thursday 5th December but you are welcome to carry on anyway. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:24, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
I'll probably nominate it when you return, so you can take credit as a nominator. LittleJerry (talk) 00:46, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Would you be able to nominate it and put all three of our things in? LittleJerry (talk) 03:34, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
OK Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:56, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
What should be done with the "Ecological role" subsection? Should it be removed? LittleJerry (talk) 18:45, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
I will do some work on it. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:27, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
I need your help at FAC. LittleJerry (talk) 16:46, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
I didn't write the "Respiration" section and I don't know much about the subject. My book deals with respiration in a single paragraph. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:22, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Does your book discuss how deep they dive? LittleJerry (talk) 20:27, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Not as far as I can see. Most of them cruise around on the surface don't they?
Nevermind, problem solved. LittleJerry (talk) 20:37, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Need you for FAC. LittleJerry (talk) 16:10, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

I think I may have answered the two queries on osmoregulation with a new ref; Kelly p. 68 did not support the odd claim about absorption through that thick scaly skin (always struck me as unlikely...); I suspect the phrase arose from something like 'absorption must be through the skin or other membranes [... and we don't imagine it's the skin, folks]'. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:18, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Tomorrow is the end of the Stub Contest and after that I will return to my usual routine and pay some attention to the FAC. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:09, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
Okay, because we really need you now. LittleJerry (talk) 14:49, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

Edits to Sea

Hi, I've just seen that an editor is starting to delete paragraphs from Sea ... perhaps we can get this stopped at least until after the front page appearance. I've pinged him ... feel free to help. Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:31, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

I think we should put the page back to what it was before WolfmanSF made his changes. Sea is meant to be on the front page tomorrow. When Common toad appeared as today's featured article it had a torrid day! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:54, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Actually I think it very bad that any editor should make such sweeping changes to a Featured Article without prior consultation. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:21, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes, it was unthinking; to be charitable, I expect it was just ill-informed. I suggest you put it back now with a note that we're happy to discuss after tomorrow. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:58, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Actually, looking more carefully at what has been done, I am not unhappy at the alterations that were made. The smaller edits are reasonable while the big addition of new material was then removed. Let's hope the editor concerned leaves the article alone until after tomorrow. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:36, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
All right. I think it a pity that we've now got a level 3 heading to interrupt the pattern, but that's a minor aesthetic detail. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:22, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
I've changed it to a level 2 heading. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:21, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

article you created appreciated, tact you showed in a horridly frustrating situation *much* appreciated

Well, looking over your practically-bare talkpage, I can tell that you almost never get complimented for a job well done. Sorry about that, we wikipedians are a prickly bunch, loners mostly, concentrating on improving articles and such. So I figured you might need a pat on the back. Consider it done. I ran across some page about a marine species, which you created, and then brought to good article status, single-handedly. That in itself deserves the congratulations of all right-thinking wikipedians, so you have my thanks. Then, somebody combatitive swooped in, made wild accusations, template-spammed your article, did some pretty drastic but clearly pointless reworking, and then stormed off again, honking their horn. Did you lose your cool? Did you lash out? Did you call in a hundred admins? Not that I can tell. You stuck with pillar four, in a very difficult pickle, which was absolutely positively no fault of yours. Everything you did was not just right, it was unassailably right... and when somebody saw fit to assail you anyhoo, you resisted the urge to stoop to their level. They have since been banned, per wp:boomerang, when on some unrelated matter *they* attempted to bring in a hundred admins to enforce *their* will on other editors. The wheels of wikiJustice sometimes grind exceedingly slow, but they grind fine, and they grind fair. You, madam, are a pearl in the sea of wikipedians. For sticking firm to pillar four, I award you my heartfelt gratitude. Smooth sailing. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 14:04, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

That's quite a complement, I think ;-) Thanks. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:31, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Poraniopsis redirected to Echinasteridae

Dear Cwmhiraeth,

Poraniopsis is redirected to Echinasteridae. There might be a mistake. FYI only. Best Regards --Hanberke (talk) 04:30, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

I know, and it is very unsatisfactory. The trouble is that Echinasteridae is placed in the order Spinulosida and ITIS, the source used for that page states that Poraniopsis is included in Echinasteridae. WoRMS on the other hand includes Poraniopsis in Poraniidae in the order Valvatida. These are fundamental differences. WikiProject Marine life does not stipulate which source to use but I believe WoRMS is more authoratative. I could BOLDLY try to sort it out or I could do nothing. Salt -- "Anglicizing spelling"

Why did you anglicize the spelling of the article on salt? Samuel Webster (talk) 18:01, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) - it seems correct: the first version of the article was written by a Slovenian who used the form "iodised", which could represent something not far off an English spelling approach. There seems no particular reason in this article to go for an American or other spelling instead, in the absence of a Slovenian English style guide (attempt at humour). Let's not worry too much about it. Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:17, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
I did a lot of work on the article back in March 2013, that was 8 months ago. Nobody was concerned about whether it was British English or American English back then and I don't really see why they are so bothered now. You will find lots of discussion on the article talk page but I am steering clear of the argument. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:34, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
Cwmhiraeth- Nor did I see why you were concerned about it -- enough to change the spelling. Chiswick Chap, the first stable(ish) version has a mixture of styles, but it looks to be mostly Commonwealth spelling, I see now! Samuel Webster (talk) 07:52, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you: Samuel Merrill Woodbridge now an FA

I just wanted to express my appreciation and thank you for your time and efforts in helping me get Samuel Merrill Woodbridge to featured article status with your insightful comments and focused critique through both the GA and FA process. --ColonelHenry (talk) 18:37, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

My pleasure, but I didn't help much at FA. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:44, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
  • Perhaps, but your comprehensive GA review whipped it into pretty good shape and laid the path for a rather easy FAC.--ColonelHenry (talk) 20:05, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Cwmhiraeth, as you can see from my response, I have strong objections to using the original hook, as it conveys the impression that Lambert sang "Applause" in the episode, when he (in fact) did not: early reports from supposedly reliable sources that he would turned out to be not the case, so to run the original hook feels, to me, like lying.

I've proposed an ALT1a, rewording from ALT1 which wasn't to your taste. If this still is not, I'm happy to try other ALT hooks. Please let me know how you would like to proceed. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:28, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

I have suggested an ALT2. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:26, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
With regard to the Greater Poland Civil War nomination, you quoted the rule "You're not allowed to approve your own hook or article." In that case my proposed hook was only a rephrasing of hooks already discussed and I think your interpretation of the rule is incorrect. I think the rule is actually referring to the article nominator rather than the article reviewer. If the nominator agrees to a minor rewording of a hook suggested by the reviewer, the reviewer should be able to approve the nomination. If you accepted my ALT2 for your article mentioned above, I think it would be ridiculous to require a third party to validate it. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:26, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
  • I've just done an edit-by-edit look through the Greater Poland nom—apologies if I don't quite track this right, but this is my final edit before a too-long-delayed bedtime (Katy can wait until later): as far as I can tell, Sp33dyphil's proposed hook, which is the one you modified, was never reviewed separately. Piotrus, the nominator, said he liked it, but that doesn't count. So you approved your own version of Sp33dyphil's hook, but with some new information added to it—not merely rephrasing—the words "which terminated after the accession of ten-year old Jadwiga of Poland". This is new: previous hooks just say the war led to Jadwiga's succession, but yours specifies that the accession came first, then the war's end. This is exactly the sort of thing that needs to be checked against the article and sources to be sure it's accurate, which is why another reviewer needs to get involved. BlueMoonset (talk) 07:11, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Slave-making ant DYK + ant task force

Hello Cwmhiraeth! I randomly found your Polyergus rufescens draft while searching for incomings links to the recently created Slave-making ant article.

If you are interested in a co-nominated slave-making ant DYK, I can contribute with an article about the slave-making genus Rossomyrmex. The article was expanded yesterday and was supposed to be used in conjunction with the SMA article + Trophobiosis article + an article about an aphid-"farming" ant species. But all those links made the hook look awkward and we decided to only include the slavery and "farming" articles in the DYK. It is not very important to me that the Rossomyrmex article is used in a DYK, but feel free to use it in any way you see fit if it's possible to include it in the same hook as your Polyergus rufescens article.

Also, you are very much invited to the ant task force. Cheers, jonkerztalk 04:15, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

I will move my draft article into main space and work further on it there. Slave-making ants are a fascinating subject and if you would like to contribute to the article it could be a joint DYK nomination. Alternatively, we could jointly nominate the two articles with a single hook and then adjust the credits to be given for each article. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:20, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Great :) Writing one article each and jointly nominating them with a single hook is what I had in mind. Any ideas for a catchy hook? I'll try to figure something out. We still have a couple of days to come up with a good hook. jonkerztalk 06:36, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Good. Do you have access to any useful source on description or distribution for Polyergus rufescens? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:48, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
"Global revision of the dulotic ant genus Polyergus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Formicinae, Formicini)" by Trager (2013) was published in Zootaxa less than a month ago, but it's behind a paywall and I've no access to it. The author recently created a WP account (James C. Trager), if we're lucky, he may be kind and email you the article if you ask him. Other than that, I think I have a couple of older articles from Psyche (http://www.hindawi.com/) somewhere on my computer, but you probably have to manually look through those because they are not OCR:ed. I'll see what I can find and get back to you ASAP (probably tomorrow or the day after tomorrow). jonkerztalk 07:08, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Polyergus rufescens now exists. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:18, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

I looked through all the articles in my not-very-organized SMA folder without finding anything useful. Actually, the only non-trivial mention was a brief paragraph about their obligatory slave-making behavior, but I see that you've already covered that. Regarding the hook, here are a few suggestions:

Did you known ...

  1. ... that ants in the genera Polyergus (e.g. Polyergus rufescens) and Rossomyrmex are the only obligatory slave-makers in the subfamily Formicinae?
  2. ... that the slave-making ant Polyergus rufescens enslaves Formica species, while ants of the genus Rossomyrmex enslave only Proformica ants?
  3. ... that slave-making behavior has evolved independently in the two ant genera Polyergus (e.g. Polyergus rufescens) and Rossomyrmex?
  4. ... that the slave-making ants Polyergus rufescens and Rossomyrmex species R. minuchae are both known from Spain?
  5. ... that the slave-making ants Polyergus (e.g. Polyergus rufescens) and Rossomyrmex are closely related, but both are more closely related to the genera they parasitize (Formica and Proformica)?

jonkerztalk 00:30, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Of these possible hooks, I like the third one best. Do you have a source that states this fact that I could add to my article? In fact most of these hooks are not borne out by my article as it stands. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:06, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
Do you think this is a reliable source? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:17, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

More closely related to their hosts than they are to each other, yes. #3 and #5 are both from this PLoSONE article (open access / cc-by). The source text reads "A molecular phylogeny of closely related Formicine species by Hasegawa et al. [24] showed that slave-making behavior has evolved independently in two closely related genera, Polyergus and Rossomyrmex. Both genera are more closely related to the genera they parasitize (Formica and Proformica, respectively) than to each other." I have refs for the other hooks as well, but they have not been added to any of the articles yet.

myrmecofourmis.fr is probably more reliable than what it looks like, but here are some better refs:

Raids
Mating behaviour & description

I'll expand the Rossomyrmex article with the fact from hook #3, but it can be mentioned briefly in the P. rufescens article as well. jonkerztalk 11:22, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

I have added the fact for #3 to the P. rufescens article and it is ready for DYK. Do you want to do the nomination or shall I? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:18, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Great :) That would be appreciated, I'll review another DYK and add it to the nomination page once it's up. jonkerztalk 15:14, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
I've made the nomination for November 12th. The hook is "... that slave-making behavior has evolved independently in the two ant genera Polyergus (e.g. Polyergus rufescens) and Rossomyrmex? Perhaps you should add the information to support the hook to your article.
By the way, your other hook for November 12th has an image accompanying it but does to mention (pictured) in the hook. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:40, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Done and  Done! jonkerztalk 04:42, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

A general thanks

Like nearly everyone here, I am very impressed with your quality contributions. I'm also impressed with how well you sidestep drama and ignore the less important aspects which can often be a distraction for content creators. (I hope to emulate that.) If you need a hand with anything – such as an article that needs a review, or formatting help needed to fulfill a reviewer's request – please feel free to ask. All the best, – Quadell (talk) 13:21, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. Our dear blogger friend however is not very impressed with my efforts! Up till the end of October I was concentrating on writing and improving articles that scored the maximum number of points for the WikiCup. It is quite pleasant now to traipse around where my whimsy takes me, doing just what I like. At the moment, bringing articles to GA and FA seems an unnecessary effort when there are so many hundreds of thousands of species lacking articles or just represented by stubs. I will bear in mind your offer of a review or help with formatting for the future however.Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:53, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Dear Cwmhiraeth, as a fan of your contributions (actually creating new articles) on lots of otherwise ignored species, I was really disappointed with your GA and FA efforts. Now you are welcome back to creating new articles and bringing a great number of species into light again. Best wishes --Hanberke (talk) 06:37, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
Wow. I guess that just goes to show that even if you get two major articles promoted to FA status and 13 to GA status in just two short months... even if you win the WikiCup, and are lauded as demonstrably the best recent GA and FA contributor on Wikipedia... there will always be someone there to say he is "disappointed with your GA and FA efforts". – Quadell (talk) 15:05, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

OK. I heard back from my friend Harry Lee, who said this:

"It appears that Ricinula ferruginosa Reeve (1846): sp. 50 http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/41734#page/464/mode/1up

http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/41734#page/466/mode/1up

is NOT that species of authors including Keen, and so maybe Trachypollia nodulosa (C.B. Adams, 1845) is a senior synonym, as some people are saying. As Myra Keen 1971 doesn't list a synonym for the Panamic taxon, maybe someone needs to coin a replacement name."

As for what we should do about all this, I don't know!

You are quite right and I have corrected it. Another anomaly is the disagreement between the two AmphibiaWeb references I use on the page. They both describe how to tell the difference between the two species but they contradict each other. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:20, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

Translation from French ?

Hello, I've seen that you translated - very well - the article Astropyga radiata I wrote in French. If you are used to this, I am currently writing plenty of echinoderms articles in French, including all the extant and extinct classes (see fr:Echinodermata as a beginning). If you need any help about the translation, you can ask me ! Congrats and best regards, FredD (talk) 16:03, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

I am not sure whether I did translate the article but I rather doubt it, especially as I see I nominated it for DYK. If I had, then I should have tagged it as such. For the future, I might use some of the articles you are writing, especially when they are as well referenced as Astropyga radiata is. Often foreign language Wikipedia articles seem to be largely unsourced and then I don't like to use them except perhaps for some general information. For example, some species may have papers published on their larval development or the secondary metabolites they contain without giving the basic description of the organism that I want to include in my article. Luzon Hawk-Owl

  • To let you know that the talk page to Luzon Hawk-Owl was a redirect to "Talk:Philippine Hawk-Owl", so you have edited the Luzon Hawk-Owl and updated the class to Start on the Philippine Hawk-Owl talk page. The Luzon H-O talk page did not have a WP banner and so it was not rated as a Stub at the start of the competition, so you probably can not claim 10 points for expanding it, but the judges will clarify this point. I think that you also can not claim one point for upgrading it from a Stub to a Start. I created a talk page for the Luzon H-O from a redirect today. You might like to put in "class=start" and complete the rating and ask the judges to adjudicate. I have changed the WP banner on the Philippine H-O back to a Stub class. Snowman (talk) 17:37, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
  • Also, my interpretation of the IUCN page is that the taxon is not recognised by IUCN, which use the pre-split form of the complex as one species; see the taxoboxes for the other owls in the group. I have amended the IUCN status. Note that on the IUCN website the binomial name matches the Wiki, but the common name does not, which would need an explanation before you assume that the taxon used on the Wiki and the IUCN are the same. Snowman (talk) 17:37, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
  • Note that the new version of IUCN is Version 2013.2. Snowman (talk) 17:51, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
I did notice that the talk page had the wrong title and considered what I should do about it. I came to the conclusion that I would leave it to someone more competent than me. I will ask on the competition page whether I can claim 10 points for expanding it. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:58, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
Similar issue with Mantanani Scops Owl. Snowman (talk) 19:27, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
Of course, when you click on a redirect you go to the target page, and after doing that you can go to the actual redirect by clicking on the little blue link at the top of the target page. The little blue link only appears if you are sent to a page via a redirect. The redirect page will be shown and you will be able to edit it in the normal way. If there is a double redirect, then I think that you do this for each redirected step. There are others ways of getting to a redirect, but that is seems to me to be the simplest. Welcome to the 2014 WikiCup!

Hello Cwmhiraeth, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition began on 1 January. There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Crocodilia FA

Crocodilia has been promoted! Thanks for your help. I couldn't have gotten it through this quick without you guy's help. LittleJerry (talk) 18:02, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Well, that's good news. I am afraid I was not as much help as I should have been. During December I did almost nothing except expand stubs to start class articles!
Do you have anything else in mind for the future? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:09, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
Not really. I'm semi-retiring from Wiki, at least for a while. I'm burnt out on major projects and have personal things focus on. Thanks for your participation in Manta, Starfish and Croc and good luck on any future FACs. (I'm assuming you'll work on salamander) I may attempt another FAC (likely a single species) if I have the time and energy. But that won't be for quite a while. LittleJerry (talk) 18:39, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
Well, all the best for your personal things. Meanwhile, Cwmhiraeth, shall we attempt to put Crocodilia on the front page? It won't take much to condense the lead into a summary. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:34, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
Indeed, Wikipedia has benefited from your FAC efforts over a range of important animal groups LittleJerry, and you will be missed. Meanwhile, we might as well go for Crocodilia at TFA. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:08, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
He's just been awarded a well-deserved Natural History Shield.

Here's a first draft of the TFA blurb (maybe it needs pruning a little further): Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:40, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Crocodilia is an order of large, predatory, semi-aquatic reptiles. They appeared 83.5 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous period. The order includes the true crocodiles (family Crocodylidae), the alligators and caimans (family Alligatoridae), and the gharial and false gharial (family Gavialidae). Large, solidly built, lizard-like reptiles, crocodilians have long flattened snouts, eyes, ears, and nostrils at the top of the head and laterally compressed tails. Their skin is thick and covered in non-overlapping scales; they have conical teeth and a powerful bite. They swim well and can move quite rapidly on land. Crocodilians are found mainly in lowlands in the tropics, but alligators are also found in the USA and China. They are largely carnivorous, some specialising on fish while others have generalised diets. Crocodilians are typically solitary and territorial. During breeding, dominant males try to monopolise available females. The eggs are laid in holes or on mounds and in some species, females care for their young. Eight species of crocodilians have attacked humans, the largest number of attacks being by the Nile crocodile. Humans are the greatest threat to crocodilian populations through hunting and habitat destruction, but farming has greatly reduced unlawful trading in wild skins. Crocodilians have appeared in art and literature since at least Ancient Egypt. The story that crocodiles weep for their victims dates back to the 9th century; it was put forward by Sir John Mandeville in 1400 and mentioned again by William Shakespeare.
I have edited the blurb a little. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:55, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
Great. Shall we go for it at once or is there any particular day to consider (Steve Irwin day, Nov. 15 is a vague possibility, I guess)? Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:03, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
I should have thought at once, before it weathers too much! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:14, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
I've put it there. So far only ColonelHenry has visited. I see that Salamander is making progress - would you like me to have a go at the myths and legends? It mentions fire already, but there should be some good quotes available, I think. Another article which could do with the treatment is Whale, though it might be a bit of a 'large' topic! Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:44, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
Good. I started on Salamander last year but didn't complete work on it. Your help with the myths and legends, or any other section, would be welcome. I have decided that I will try to bring some large article on an order, or similar taxon, to GA each month in 2014. I was thinking more about invertebrates such as Mysida (which I see has a splendid section called "mysid culture") but Whale would be quite possible. The trouble is, I view everything from a Wikicup point of view, and Whale is a high-scoring article while Mysida is a fairly low scoring one. This means doing Mysida early in the competition and Whale later when points are more urgently needed. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:28, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
OK, Salamander it is. I think the Mysid culture is in an aquarium! Happy to go alone with Wikicupping, it seemed to work well last year, and it sounds as if Whale might happen later. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:00, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
I think whale might be difficult since "whale" is not monotypic but refer to several species that are not all closely related (sperm whales, killer whales and pilot whales are more related to dolphins than other "whales"). Cetacea may be better. LittleJerry (talk) 01:18, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
You are probably right. We will have to think about that. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:09, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
If and when I do return for one more FA project, it will probably be narwhal. Throwing that out there. LittleJerry (talk) 04:36, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
I'll be happy to cooperate with narwhal if you would like some help. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:54, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
Out of curiosity, what are your other future FA projects? LittleJerry (talk) 01:51, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
I plan to do Camel and Ostrich, for both of which I have good books and both would score large numbers of points for the WikiCup if successful. That would be in the summer. I will probably take Salamander on to FAC as well for similar reasons. That has just become a GA and should not need much further work. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:10, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
That sounds cool. Emu was demoted a couple years among and Ostrich would make a great replacement. Any invertebrates? LittleJerry (talk) 14:01, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Some invertebrate groups to GA anyway but I hadn't really thought about FA. I'm open to suggestions. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:12, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
You mentioned Jellyfish a while back. LittleJerry (talk) 20:21, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
My Invertebrate Zoology textbook has a whole chapter on Cnidaria from which the jellyfish-related part would have to be extracted. My preference would be for Sea anemone, which I think would be easier. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:43, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Love the uncited one-liner 'The internal anatomy of anemones is quite complex.', sounds like a floundering exam answer... would be an interesting article to work on. Plenty to say on symbiosis, too. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:54, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I see what you mean. Would you start sea anemone as a GA? LittleJerry (talk) 21:09, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Perhaps we may see Canada Goose at FA at some time? – Connormah (talk) 01:30, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
@LittleJerry, yes.
@Connormah, I haven't thought about editing Canada Goose and doubt I have enough interest in it to take it to FA. However I see it is included in my incomplete set of British Birds by Witherby (3 out of 5 volumes found in a charity shop), and might consider taking it to GA if you wished to collaborate. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:25, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
What invertebrate GA projects do you have in mind? LittleJerry (talk) 14:01, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
  • How about we have a go at sea anemone after Easter? Would that suit? As for other GA invertebrate projects, I plan to work on various obscure phyla/classes/orders, such as Mysida and Ostracod, with articles that are currently not too long but where I have good basic information from my "Invertebrate Zoology". Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:07, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
Unforunately, I don't have much info on anemone and "Invertebrate Zoology" is too expansive for me. LittleJerry (talk) 21:36, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
Its okay. Keep doing what you're doing. I was just curious. I'll probably return sometime for atleast one more FAC. LittleJerry (talk) 23:13, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
Sorry for the later reply re:Canada Goose - I'll definitely keep that offer in mind! – Connormah (talk) 15:52, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
I was thinking of maybe bringing Tiger to GA. Would you be interested? Maybe Chip can help again. LittleJerry (talk) 19:28, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
It is a very long article but then again it looks pretty well-referenced so there might not be too much work involved. I wouldn't want to take it to FAC but might join you working towards GAN. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:58, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
That what I was thinking; doing see fixing up and maybe add in a little more info. I have no intention of bringing it to FA. LittleJerry (talk) 20:59, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

IUCN

IUCN3.1 refers to version 3.1, which has not changed since 2001. It says what Least Concern, Vulnerable, Critical and so on mean. Some of these have a suffix of letters and numbers, which are also defined in the criteria version 3.1. For example for the Hyacinth Macaw, the criteria are Endangered A2cd, see IUCN website species page. Snowman (talk) 20:24, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Pocillopora inflata is written in Pocillopora damicornis taxobox. I'm not sure to change that. Cheers/ --Hanberke (talk) 07:22, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for noticing that. When writing an article it is much easier to copy another article's taxobox and then make the necessary alterations than it is to start from scratch. In this instance, I missed one change I should have made. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:00, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Cwmhiraeth, and thanks for your review of an article I've been working on at DYK. The original hook fact has now been removed from the article so I've added a new ALT hook, so I'd be very grateful if you could have another look at it. Thanks, Acather96 (click here to contact me) 14:13, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

I see that Sasata is expanding the article. I will leave it for a couple of days for things to settle in case there is more expansion. I think your ALT1 hook has too many uses of the word "potentially", and the proposed hook fact is a bit complex for DYK. You could instead have a hook referring to the smell of the fungus. Salamander

I've done a little on the culture, but since there are 2 existing articles am not sure any more is advisable. What do you think? And do you need any help on any other section? Otherwise all I've done is a few minor tweaks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:57, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

The culture looks fine to me. I'm polishing the article a bit before nominating it and need to read it through carefully - it is some time since I did the main work on it. Are you good at American spelling? I would prefer to change it all into British English but think it is inadvisable, especially as we only have a few species of newt in this country while they have hundreds of species of salamander over there. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:23, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. We shouldn't change the ENGVAR without good reason, and I don't think there is one here. I can look for the obvious defence/defense and colour/color type spellings. We could perhaps include a Salamander etymology but it's pretty dull stuff (unknown prob. Eastern origin). Oh, and we should probably move the refs out of the lead. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:47, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
OK. I plan to concentrate on it tomorrow morning. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:07, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
I've checked the whole text, changed a few spellings, and added some commas. I notice that autotomy and tail regeneration are mentioned in 2 places, haven't fixed it. G'night. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:14, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
I have now nominated it for GA, but I daresay nobody will take up the review for a while. It since strikes me that it should have an evolution section, which I will work on, and it would be nice to hide the cladograms as in Frog. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:32, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

This is a note to let the main editors of Crocodilia know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on January 27, 2014. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 27, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

American Alligator

Crocodilia is an order of large, predatory, semi-aquatic reptiles. They appeared in the Late Cretaceous, and include true crocodiles, alligators, caimans, and gharials. WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week, for unbelievable quantity and quality of content creation and development. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Worm That Turned submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I'd like to nominate Cwmhiraeth for this prestigious award. I nominated Chiswick Chap for his hard work on the Sea article, but there were two hard working editors on that article, and they both deserve credit. I've been holding off as long as I could so that it'd come as a surprise. Cwmhiraeth is a fantastic editor who's talents go far beyond that one article. He's written over 500 DYK articles, and many articles besides. His writing talent is sufficient to bring many articles to featured and good quality. If you think you've heard his name before, it's because he won last year's Wikicup! I'm proud to nominate him as Editor of the Week.

Why didn't you include the image when promoting? --Jakob (talk) 13:13, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

About 50% of DYK nominations are accompanied by images but only one image is used with each batch of hooks. This means that some inevitably don't make it to the front page. Another consideration is the wish to vary the type of image used to include portraits, buildings, geographical locations etc, so I am afraid some people are bound to be disappointed. In fact I merely reviewed your article, it was Ohconfucius who promoted it. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:31, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Perophora japonica, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Hydroid (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi! I think I have enough time now to put the article forward for GAN. Thanks for all the useful efforts you put to improve the article! Do you vote for GAN now? I hope you are not busy and may be free to help with the GAN (you can co-nominate with me), else I can wait. Please let me know. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 11:20, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

I'll do a little polishing on the "Diseases and parasites" section as at the moment it reads like a list of factoids. Then I should think the article would be ready and I will be happy to help at GAN. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:47, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Salamander

The article Salamander you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Salamander for things which need to be addressed. I'm always glad to have your help. You seem happy dealing with parts of subjects that either don't appeal to me, like culture sections, or in which I have no expertise, like cladograms. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:25, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Lauridromia and Lauridromia intermedia

The multiple issues in the Lauridromia article is basically the fact that it's only a very short lead and despirately needs expanding with reliable sources. The Lauridromia intermedia article has more than enough to justify an article. I don't know if this article meets any specific notability policy. But there is enough to justify an article if it does. All it really needs is some extra references right now. Kingjeff (talk) 07:14, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

I just like to see a lot of sources. There could be more sources in the description section and for "Crabs in the family Dromiidae are often known as "sponge crabs" due to their habit of carrying bits of sponge on their carapace." Kingjeff (talk) 07:31, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Anything unreferenced can be deleted. So, it's better to have a reference. Kingjeff (talk) 10:21, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Starfish

This is a note to let the main editors of Starfish know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on February 28, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/February 28, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Starfish

There are about 1,500 living species of starfish to be found on the seabed in all the world's oceans, from the tropics to subzero polar waters and from the intertidal zone down to abyssal depths, 6,000 m (20,000 ft) below the surface. Starfish are among the most familiar of marine invertebrates. They typically have a central disc and five arms. The upper surface may be smooth, granular or spiny, and is covered with overlapping plates. Many species are brightly coloured in shades of red or orange, while others are blue, grey or brown. Starfish have tube feet operated by a hydraulic system and a mouth at the centre of the lower surface. They have complex life cycles and can reproduce both sexually and asexually. Most can regenerate damaged parts or lost arms and they can shed arms as a means of defence. Starfish such as the ochre sea star and the reef sea star have become widely known as examples of the keystone species concept in ecology. With their appealing symmetrical shape, starfish are found in literature, legend and popular culture. They are sometimes collected as curios, used in design or as logos, and in some cultures, despite possible toxicity, they are eaten. (Full article...)

Cwmhiraeth, did you do the check for close paraphrasing that seems to have been skipped by the original reviewer? You didn't say, so I need to inquire, since if you didn't do it then it hasn't been done and a tick is premature. Please let me know. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:31, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

I was unable to check for close paraphrasing because the main paper by De Andrade was not available online. Anyway, if you care to read such published scientific papers you will find they are so full of technical terms as to be virtually incomprehensible to the uninitiated. Since this article is mostly comprehensible, it is unlikely to suffer from close paraphrasing. If it copied the original too closely it would be unlikely to have the grammatical and other errors which it contains. It mentions "anatomizing ridges" for example which I would have thought needed an extra "s" to give "anastomizing ridges", but I wouldn't like to make that alteration because I might be wrong. WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Template:Did you know nominations/Kendallina

Hi, this is to enable your full argumentation about the DYK nomination for Kendallina. The one source it is based upon (Moore, Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology, Part O., 1959) has the following text for the family:

"Family PARABOLINOIDIDAE Lochman, 1956. Exoskeleton opisthoparian, subisopygous. Glabella tapering to truncate-tapering, with 3 pairs of distinct to obsolete lateral furrows; frontal area 0.25 to 0.3 of length of cranidium, with distinct to obsolete anterior border furrow; eye ridges distinct or faint, eyes small to medium in size; fixigenae variable in width and position, with posterior areas triangular to straplike; librigenae rectangular, with genal spines or rounded angles. Pygidium transverse to subtriangular, with convex axis tapered nearly full length to broadly rounded end; border furrow usually obsolete; border narrow, poorly defined; pleurae may end in 1 to 4 pairs of marginal spines or margin smooth. Surface finely granulose or smooth. U.Cam.".

The information in this text, and a few from still higher taxa, and information deducted form the illustration provided, I have used to supplement the generic description:

"Kendallina BERG, nom. subsl. herein [pro Kendallia BERG, 1953 (non EVERMANN & SHAW 1927)] [·Conocephaliles eryon' HALL, 1863]: Glabella moderately convex, truncate-tapering, axial furrows shallow, may have pair of anterior pits, I or 2 pairs of very faint lateral furrows; frontal area 0.25 of length of cranidium, narrow (Ir.), anterior border furrow straight, very faint, anterior border narrow (sag.), anterior margin bluntly pointed; eyes small, opposite anterior third of glabella; fixigenae horizontal or slightly upsloping, with palpebral areas 0.25 of glabellar width, posterior areas triangular, of medium width (exsag.), almost same in length (11'.) as occipital ring; librigenae with medium-length genal spines. Pygidium narrowly transverse; axis same in width as pleural fields, with 3 axial rings and terminal; 4 pleurae with obsolete interpleural grooves and shallow pleural furrows; posterior margin smooth. U.Cam.( Francon.), C.USA.--FIG. 202,1. ·K. eryon (HALL), Wis.; 1a,b, ceph., pyg., X3 (376)."

I checked all the elements of the description against the illustration, the wikicommons file of my own specimen and other (copywrited) photos on the web. I deleted characters that were never visible or that were contradicted by these photos and the illustration in the Treatise. I hope you'll be able to fully evaluate the article now. I'm told a publication on the species found at the location of the figured specimen is in preparation. I'll check all information against that article as soon as I get a hold of it. Dwergenpaartje (talk) 21:13, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello Dwergenpaartje, I appreciate how difficult it is to write a technical description of a species from a limited amount of published information and you did well. I approved the article at DYK and it appeared on the main page and that finishes my involvement with the article. Keep up the good work, - there are plenty more extinct species without current Wikipedia articles! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:06, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

I have a tool, "Page size", on the left of my screen that gives page sizes and I believe this is the tool used in DYK for assessing sizes. I forget how I got the tool, maybe through the preferences tab at the top of the screen? If you asked BlueMoonset, he would tell you. Anyway, with regard to this article, your expansion is approximately x 4.5 at the moment and only needs a few more sentences to become fivefold (4275 B --> 4805 B). And while you are about it, it would not be difficult to expand it a little further to 5000 B which would earn you bonus points in the WikiCup. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:30, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
