Help desk[edit]

Hi Cyrius.

Do be careful not to bite the newbies when you're on the Help Desk. If you're going to get annoyed by silly questions, it's probably best to stay away entirely. To take the Esperanto question as an example, you might be better off phrasing your future replies as suggestions ("Try asking over at Wikipedia talk:Babel") rather than insinuations of incompetence ("Why didn't you try Wikipedia talk:Babel?") Implying that the editor in question is "silly" for not knowing to ask on the talk page there, or being unfamiliar with how policies, templates, and wikiprojects are created is also a tad harsh.

The editor in question did do the right thing—he wasn't sure how to go about something, and he asked for help at the Help Desk. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 16:44, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, just try to use a light hand at the Help Desk. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 18:23, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Current drafts[edit]

What do you think of the two drafts I have at User:Golbez/sandbox? The colors still need some fiddling with. I was working with Draft 4 (w/o names) until I realized how iffy that got in pre-1978 lists, so I tried out Draft 5 with names, and it looks like it could be useful. Any comments? And does this appear to be at all useful? --Golbez 22:22, July 29, 2005 (UTC)

Hurricane season article updates[edit]

I've been updating your user page on the sentence where it says: 'Wikipedia has a little something on every season back to ____' so that it displays the latest year. You're okay with that, right?

Signpost spam[edit]

My apologies for the impersonal message, but you are one of a number of people who figure in recent events surrounding the deletion of VfD, a story about which will be in the upcoming The Wikipedia Signpost. A draft of the story is at User:Michael Snow/Deletion deletion. Please feel free to review it and point out any inaccuracies or misrepresentations you find. I would ask that rather than editing the story directly, if you could please direct any comments to the talk page. Thank you. --Michael Snow 23:33, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

ASINs[edit]

Hi, Cyrius. Sorry to bother you if you don't care about this...

You commented on the little WP:VIP fracas I had over deleting ASINs; I'm trying to start a discussion about this. If you have any particular opinions about it, could you note them at User:Shimgray/ASIN? I'm hoping the community can figure out what to do about this. Texas template[edit]

I appologize ahead for clogging up your talk page with this.

Recently, User:Ed g2s keeps on changing the Texas template to a plain version and won't explain why. I need you guys to support me to keep the Texas template that has been active.

Templates removed for space by Cyrius.

I want you guys to have some input and decide which one is best for Texas. Like I said, I support the colorful template, but Ed g2s has been reverting it without explaination and has threatened to block me if I revert again to the colorful one. I think the colorful one is more aesthetic looking. Ed g2s doesn't seem to think so and keeps on erasing it to a plain version. Also, he's not even from Texas, he's from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Let's have a vote on this on Template talk:Texas. Thank you for everyone's time. – UH Collegian 19:41, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ain't that the truth?[edit]

Man, is it ever good to hear from you! Missed you!!! Jeez, I've had this adminship only a few days. I've read the guidelines, tried to follow the examples of other admins and look what I get for my trouble. I never even heard of NoPuzzleStranger before last week. Anyway, it's nice to hear from you again. I may need to bend your ear so as not to make these errors again. - Lucky 6.9 01:08, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. New kid in the corner office, I guess. See, I was going by the "extremely short articles without content" criterion. Is there something I'm missing here? Is this such a big deal? We've spent more time arguing over a few keystrokes than the people who made them spent in the first place. Also, if this continues with that certain user I mentioned, I may consider an RfC. I don't mind a little extra scrutiny, but I don't like smarmy comments. BTW, thanks for sticking up for me. - Lucky 6.9 01:32, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Images for Sorcerer Hunters[edit]

Ive been working on the Sorcerer Hunters article for some time, its my pet project and I want to improve it.

I was wondering about Images, if I get somone to scan the cover of one of the books, may I post it? And if so, what notes would I need to add? Im very confused on this...

Your user page[edit]

thanks Tobias Conradi (Talk) 20:17, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

furthermore I think you used admin power in this conflict. This probably was ok. But from now on don't do this. All references in the language pages that Netoholic touched against the will of the mayor editors of the true infobox are now restored. So his private template is not in use in any article anymore. Plz tell Netoholic what talk page are for and not me. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 20:21, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stop abusing your admin power[edit]

Tobias Conradi (Talk) 20:29, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

you help the view of one party = and you use your admin rights to do so. i.e. you abuse it. Why did you move it back, now that there are no article refs? if dab does not belong here, than fine, make it a redirect to the true template not to the private version of one user. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 20:37, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

you received your admin rights to work for the community, for consensuses. Not to work for what you think is nice. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 20:39, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I told you it could be a redirect if dab is inapropriate. BTW you could have told this in the first place that dab in template space is inapropriate in your opinion. Why did you engage on the side of Netoholic? Tobias Conradi (Talk) 20:47, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Let the template be moved to XYZ_new or XYZ_css. We had a discussion about moving Template:Language to Template:Infobox Language - a more standard name. Then Netoholic stepped in and created his version in hidden and also introducing it in several pages. In the long run he wanted to delete the original template thus deleting all edit history. Now I cannot move to XYZ_new -> because you abuse your admin power, i.e. you use it without any vote by the community about moving back. Tobias Conradi (Talk)

the dab thing is settled. so what? BTW if you think dab is silly it is your point of view - is there any policy? a part from dab, why do you block the redirect solution? Of course you act on the side of Netoholic, unwanted or wanted. He made very anoying edits in lots of language articles. He can play in his user space or with the XYZ_new but not with what would be the standard name for the language infobox. Now this is blocking the move of the true template to the standard name. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 20:58, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

replace true by whatever you want. you know which template I am refering to. So here is the text for you again. From only pointing to my mistakes I see you are not really open to the possibilty you made mistakes. maybe concentrate on your abuse. So here the text:

Did you prevent Template:Infobox Language from beeing moved, after you moved it the seceond time? If so , by which rule? Tobias Conradi (Talk) 15:39, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Cyrius! Tobias Conradi informally asked me to mediate the issues surrounding the (Infobox) (L/l)anguage template. I agreed to look into the matter, and so far compiled a brief summary, available here. If you could review it and leave a comment if necessary, that'd be much appreciated. Thanks!—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 20:26, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Cyrius, I see what you mean. Tobias agreed to file a WP:RM for the template, so I trust he will no longer attempt to move the template himself until that goes (or does not go) through; and definitely not until we discuss the whole situation (here or elsewhere). Do you mind unprotecting it for now? I can, of course, do it myself, but I think it'll only be fair to let you do it. Again, thanks.—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 20:48, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for providing your comments. I drafted a proposed solution for you and other involved parties to review. If you accept it, please indicate so below the proposed solution section. Votes for Deletion - Clock Crew[edit]

As an experienced member of the Internet Community, having owned a computer for over 9 years, and frequently hopping between hundreds of various internet communities, sites and forums over the years, I would say that the Clock Crew is indeed notable on the popular flash portal, Newgrounds.com. While, you may have never been to the website, or have ever even heard of it, knowing that you are apparently an old goon and a huge bureacratic jerk - you fail to realize that in fact - yes - in fact - that the Internet has a culture of it's own indepedent of whatever Classical music or balets that you listen to or watch. In fact, I'd testify that "All your base are belong to us" is millions times more hilarious than "[The Importance of Being Earnest]]" - And probably more culturally significant.

Newgrounds.com is a significant staple of that culture, and is one of the most popular flash websites on the Internet for original flash submissions and content - especially with younger kids and teens. Thus their slogan - "Problems of the Future, Today!".

Here is the one of the two sole Keep (and the only sensible vote mind you!) vote, written by an unknown user, I can't find his IP from the history pages of the delete page.

* Keep: Anyone been to ClockCrew.net recently? The Clock Crew is still very much alive and it has always been a phenomenon. Considering there are still Clocks posting on Newgrounds today, that the Clocks have influenced the creation of many groups and crazes, and that Wikipedia has documented far lesser known fads, I think this is a piece of history that should remain in the archives.

Wikipedia should be used a little more constructively, not destructively. It's always - always - debatable as to what is important and isn't. And I think that the Wikipedia audience and authorship is skewed more towards the academic/nerd crowd, so therefore, they're going to biased with all their professionalism bullshit, no? And I think that the essence of this very bullshit is why you guys swiftly declared by democracy the destruction of this page.

Hey, who needs book-burning?!?!?! We can vote out the books from our libraries!!!! This is a swift request to bring back the article in question, openly adressed to all who voted to delete the article. Reply to me on my talk page.--Mofomojo 03:26, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thank you for removing those images I set for deletion on the remaining Tru Calling episode pages.. Illyria05 (Talk  Contributions) 23:30, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright[edit]

Ok, I'll admit the photo's for batson I thought I could use under fair use, but the site I set up for Vicksburg Fire Department was all me. I've been working on the VFD for 17 years and I have intimate knowledge of all the workings of the dept. and all the photo's were taken by me.....so why would you delete it?

And about Blair E. Batson, should I take a few photos of my own and state the same facts in my own words? I work there also by the way. Help me understand. thanks, Majorjc 03:11, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I put the copyright statement on Talk:Vicksburg Fire Department and I also put one on Talk:Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children. Can the Batson page be restored with out the copied images, and I will take my own photo's next week and release them to public domain? Majorjc 04:52, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, why did you flag this article for cleanup? Please explain why it needs to be cleaned-up (ex. grammar, spelling, formatting, order, copyright issues, confusion, etc.) Majorjc 03:25, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I can see that. I had a hard time with the images, I felt they looked cluttered. I have asked for help with the images on the talk page. Majorjc 04:54, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A3 article[edit]

I am no wikipedia guru. and I dont' know how to contact yyou.

you deleted this artice:

07:22, 10 March 2007 Cyrius (Talk | contribs) deleted "A3 - Art, Alive & Attraction" ('It is blatant advertising for a company, product, group, service or person that would require a substantial rewrite in order to become an encyclopedia article. (CSD G11)')

Lemme tell you. Your job shoul dbe to improve the articles, not delete them. This article did not have formatting, so you should have done it. There is less matter, the matter would increase once people start contributing to it. This Game called "A3" is highly popular only in Asian countries. For us its 1000 times better than crappy World of Warcraft. None of us does have high wiki skills to edit all the way to the perfection.

Only is the article is there we can perfect out with time.

But you blatantly deleted the article!!

Stop playing God!!

Deleting pictures[edit]

A large portion of your contributions appear to be deleting fair-use pictures. Of what use is it to remove, say, the only picture of a cover of a newspaper on an article about the newspaper? Or the only picture of a telescope on an article on the telescope? As a reader of articles, I would not consider it an improvement to remove pictures with no replacements. --Merceris 21:39, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is the cover picture on New york times permissable? How is this different that what you removed? How would removing all copyrighted images of the New York Times improve the article? How can the images be retrieved from deletion since only admins can do that? --Merceris 23:40, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please restore the picture removed from AsianWeek. The use of a cover picture is similar to that used with New York Times "Cover art: Cover art from various items, for identification and critical commentary (not for identification without critical commentary). --Merceris 01:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Would it not be more helpful to simply add rationale for images such as newspaper covers which obviously have a rationale? --Merceris 02:33, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Liberty Memorial Image[edit]

That picture did have a copyright status, how did it get removed?

question about where to post an idea....[edit]

Hi,

I am sorry to bother you, but I don't really understand the posting etiquette, and I would like to post my idea/request. I checked in the pump section, and didn't see it there anywhere.

I think it would only be one line of code to check 'talk' submissions to make sure they have the 4 tildas at the end, and if not then add them. The reason I request that is that there have been times where I would like to go to someone's talk page and either give them a lead about a question they asked, or ask a question that may only partially pertain to the original post, but they didn't sign it! So I can't find out who it is. When that happens the only option is to post there, and if it isn't particularly relivant, I don't want to do that:)

What do you think? And where/how should I put that request?

Thanks[edit]

Hi, I wanted to thank you for your work on the New London School explosion article, where you covered a tragical subject efficiently and well. Your turns of prose are ornate yet appropriate, which is a pleasure to see. Of course there's something wrong with me since you did said work in 2005, but what the hell. --Kizor 19:23, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cyrius, an automated process has found an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, such as fair use. The image (Image:Columbia SEAS.GIF) was found at the following location: User talk:Cyrius/Archive/2004/4/. This image or media will be removed per statement number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media will be replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. The image that was replaced will not be automatically deleted, but it could be deleted at a later date. Articles using the same image should not be affected by my edits. I ask you to please not re-add the image to your userpage and could consider finding a replacement image licensed under either the Creative Commons or GFDL license or released to the public domain. Please note that it is possible that the image on your page is included vie a template or usebox. In that case, please find a free image for the template or userbox. Thanks for your attention and cooperation. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 11:15, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Can you do something about Los 10+ Pedidos article? The user Brian lm13 and his IP insists on adding false info like MTV Perú, which doesn't exist. MTV Latino is divided in three parts: MTV Mexico, Colombia and Argentina. File:M31 Lanoue.png /\n|)r0|v|€d@ File:M31 Lanoue.png {Post} 05:20, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use disputed for Image:Bubs.png[edit]

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Bubs.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 10:53, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Eh!_Steve.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Eh!_Steve.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 16:51, 2 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 16:51, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a timecode for the frame used in relation to the orignal video/animation? ShakespeareFan00 09:59, 8 July 2007 (UTC) [reply]

I captured the frame two and a half years ago. If I had noted the time then, I certainly don't know what it is now. -- Cyrius| 18:24, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Nohat-logo-X-en-darkbg.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Nohat-logo-X-en-darkbg.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 20:55, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
