Order of Ouissam Alaouite[edit]

I'm persuaded that the ribbon you introduced in Ernesto Burzagli is not the correct one for this particular article; but your research may be better than mine. Please explain the research which informs your work. I look forward to learning more about this; and I would be pleased to discover than I'm simply wrong. --Tenmei (talk) 18:17, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've copied out exchange to the article's talk page -- See Talk:Ernesto Burzagli#Order of Ouissam Alaouite. Perhaps this will become a constructive step in the right direction? --Tenmei (talk) 20:52, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ribbon racks[edit]

It is quite rude of you to assume that I am in error when you are the one who is screwing up the tables in these articles you are editing; especially when you yourself stated that you have little knowledge of how the Marine Corps mandates the wear of awards. There is a rationale to why I use rows of four rather than three whenever possible, and it is insulting that you assumed I was simply trying to take the easiest path (if I was, I wouldn't have undertaken the project at all).

That aside, I really don't have a problem with you changing the ribbons to rows of three if there is a good reason for it, but arbitrary edits are pointless. I will revert any edits where the tables are not formatted properly, i.e. gaps, misalignments, or the text not matching the graphics. If you choose to change the work I have put into this, then you must do it correctly, and not leave messed up tables in a biography article. You can refer to Help:table and User:Bahamut0013/ribbon workshop‎ for more help. You should preview your work before you save the article so you don't leave a poorly-formatted table avaialable for all to see while you are working on it (it also cuts down on the number of revisions the page has to endure). bahamut0013wordsdeeds 12:43, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Addendum: you said that you formatted the table on Harmon Rabb, but your username does not appear in the page history. Care to enlighten me as to whether you are using a sockpuppet or if there is some confusion here?

I notice that you haven't had any contributions since I left the above message. I hope that the terse language didn't dissuade you from editing. If I did offend you, I apologize, I meant in no way that you should stop contributing, I just wanted you to stop that particular method of disruption. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 10:26, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, in that specific example, I woudn't necessarily object, though I am a large proponent of uniformity between articles. Generally, I try to go with rows of four unless there are some extenuating circumstances mainly for that reason: it could confuse a reader who goes from one biography to another (I mean, there are people in the military who regularly get confused about the regulations on the wear of awards, how does a civillian really have a chance?). I'm not particularly swayed by the argument that it should closely match the image, because the images are often out of date (you can see that in many examples, they have recieved additional awards since the photo was taken), and also because it would be silly and unsightly to duplicate this gentleman's ribbons exactly, where they narrow from four to three then to two (so as to not be covered by the lapel).
In general, there are no hard and fast rules in the Corps when to wear rows of three or four. I'll quote MCO P1020.34G (page 5-21):
It doesn't define what a "large number" is, so I assume that eight or more means rows of four. In real life, it would depend on the person, some people have more narrow chests than others, so one would have to experiment to see what looked best for thier particular uniform. So far, the only non-Marine articles I've edited are fictional characters, so I haven't gotten around to reserching the other branch's regulations.
I'm glad you were more thick-skinned than other editors. I've seen WP:CIVIL invoked at the most benign of statements. Cheers! bahamut0013wordsdeeds 06:36, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I also noticed that you are uploading a lot of images of awards. Two things regarding this: For any images that are public domain, you should either upload them at Wikimedia Commons, or tag them with {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} so that they can be moved. I also thought you might be interested in joining WikiProject Orders, Decorations, and Medals, and maximize your edits. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 05:36, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

email[edit]

I'd like to send you an email regarding an issue that may involve privacy concerns. Can you enable this function in your preferences and add a good email address so that I can contact you privately?? bahamut0013wordsdeeds 11:41, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It still says "This user has not specified a valid e-mail address" when I attempt to use the function. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 05:36, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

image request[edit]

I was wondering if you had a ribbon for the navy version of the Vietnam Distinguished Service Order?? bahamut0013wordsdeeds 06:32, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A little encouragement[edit]

I just wanted to say "thanks" for all the contributions you've been making, especially your ability to find high-quality images of foreign award ribbons. If you are ever bored and need something to do, take a look at the pages displaying File:Noribbon.svg and see if you can find the images for them. In particular, I've been making ribbon racks for Marine biographies, and I've been seeing a lot of officers awarded stuff from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic (circa 1930s) that we don't have images for. Again, bravo! bahamut0013wordsdeeds 14:08, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Award verification[edit]

Can you take a look at File:James L. Jones 2.jpg (or File:James L. Jones.jpg) and verify an award for me? Second row from the bottom, third from the veiwer's left; blue ribbon with a red center and some kind of device. Many moons ago, I'd assumed it was the Marine Corps Recruiting Ribbon, but now I realize that the red stripe is too wide and that it's unlikely he's done six tours as a recruiter, with his bio not mentioning anything that suggests recruiting.

I was thinking that it may be the Military Order of Italy, which makes sense as he was SACEUR. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 11:21, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I agree. Do you have an image without the stars? They seem to denote ascending classes of the order, and we can add stars with Template:ribbon devices. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 05:04, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Of course! How could I not think to look on foreign-language Wikipedias??? I'm going swimming today. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 05:08, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

King Faisal Award[edit]

Take a look at Robert B. Johnston, bottom row, second from the left. I'd forgotten that all I could find was something similar, but it lacks the white stripes and rosette. There isn't even a mention of this in a Wikipedia search, and I can't sort through the Arab Wikipedia. Can you help? bahamut0013wordsdeeds 16:27, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Forwarded request[edit]

copied from my talk page:

I don't recognize either of the two missing ribbons. Maybe you can? bahamut0013wordsdeeds 08:24, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thats a nice image too, but I still don't know what those awards are. I was hoping you could identify the two that aren't noted on his article. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 11:31, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Promotion[edit]

Congratulations to yourself as well. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 23:59, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Need some help[edit]

Please see Talk:James T. Conway#Awards and decorations. We are trying to identify a red-white-black foreign decoration (seen in the bottom row of File:Gen James Terry Conway June 2005.jpg). bahamut0013wordsdeeds 13:16, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Haitian Distinguished Service Medal[edit]

Do you have an image for this? There are several Marines who served in the United States occupation of Haiti who are using File:Noribbon.svg at the moment. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 13:23, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
