Audrey Eu article[edit]

To Instantnood:

In the Audrey Eu article you replaced the term "Beijing media" with "pro-Beijing media". I think that the meaning of these are definitely not the same. Would you mind having a little discussion about this matter?

BTW, I think it's time to remove the cleanup translation notice from the article.

-Deryck C. 7 July 2005 11:08 (UTC)

I supposed it is the pro-Beijing media (meaning pro-central government) in Hong Kong labeling her in this way. I am not sure if the media in Beijing are also doing so. :-D — Instantnood July 7, 2005 20:12 (UTC)
But the original author says "media in Beijing", isn't it? Deryck C. 8 July 2005 02:27 (UTC)
It's probably an inaccurate translation from an earlier version on Chinese Wikipedia. :-) — Instantnood July 8, 2005 05:41 (UTC)
Pro-beijing then. What a shame - I've been listening to a 1.5-hr talk given by her and yet don't know whose viewing her as evil woman. Deryck C. 8 July 2005 05:44 (UTC)
Nevermind. :-) — Instantnood July 8, 2005 16:09 (UTC)

Good work[edit]

COTWs on the article page[edit]

I would be interested in your input. Please go here. Thanks. Falphin 01:08, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you voted for the COTW-template to be on the article page. Is there a specific reason why you discriminate against the Improvement Drive project (AID-template)as compared to the other COTWs? --Fenice 05:54, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If you would like to insist on the AID-template having specific different rules than the others, please tell us on the Wikipedia talk:Template locations.--Fenice 06:31, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

May I clarify two things: In my view, AID is not a COTW because AID doens't start with stubs or non-existences. However, the policies done on COTW should also be done on AID because they're of similar nature. To clarify any misinterpretations about "Deryck wants only COTWC not AIDC on article page" I've added a few words on the COTW talk page. Deryck C. 09:28, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Great Mystery solved[edit]

Falphin is a name that represents an NFL fanatic. Fal=Falcons and phin=Dolphins which are my favorite teams. Falphin 23:23, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, really? I've thought of dolphin and falcon before. I just never thought putting them together gets the answer ^_^ -Deryck C. 01:29, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

More about HKCOTW[edit]

Hi, Deryck! Do you think HKCOTW is sort of useless at the moment, because there're too few active contributors from Hong Kong. Some HK wikipedians would just do minor edits (though their contributions are significance, nevertheless) while some users would remain anonymous instead of showing up themselves in the spotlight. Do you have any ideas to strengthen bonds among HKers? Meanwhile, do you have any large-scale projects about HK in your mind? Do share you idea, and I'd love to hear. :-D

PS Your funny templates section makes me burst into laughters. Lol! :-) -- Jerry Crimson Mann 05:32, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Lei Yue Mun (nonexistent) article. Deryck C. 07:24, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sexual reproduction[edit]

Can you please explain how your most recent edit to the male reproductive system section cleans up this article? You removed all information that actually described the male reproductive system and replaced it with its function. The description of the system is vital. Please revert this edit. Jamesmusik 07:47, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The original text in the paragraph came from a section about reproduction in humans not mammals. I'll add those information back to the "mammals" section later. Deryck C. 07:49, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The description of the male reproductive system is important for the human section as well. The way you have currently edited it, the article says less about huamns than it did previously. Further, your use of the English language is not at all benefiting the cleanup of this article. Jamesmusik 07:51, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to, you may add the things back, but just don't revert it back to the original version. The original version messed humans and other mammals up into a paragraph describing something between humans and dogs. I hope you can observe my opinion and the opinion on th talk page and keep "humans" and "other mammals" as 2 sections. Deryck C. 07:54, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, I erased some paragraphs because I hope the "humans" and "mammals" section differ by style from each other. Deryck C. 07:55, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, btw, I don't hope the human section be too long because it's linked to many other "main articles". If you want to add information, add into those linked articles. Deryck C. 07:57, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I don't plan on reverting... I agree that there should be two sections, one for humans and other mammals, but most of the information overlaps. I suggest instead that it be assumed that the information for humans applies to mammals, and then exceptions, differences, etc. be placed in the "other mammals" section. Jamesmusik 13:26, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Existence template![edit]

New joke. Deryck C. 11:05, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The existence of this article is disputed.
Please see discussion on the talk page.

Talk talk talk pages[edit]

These show up in article namespace because the system does not recognise the Talk talk: binary or the User talk talk: binary. I have had to delete it because otherwise it will get copied to every mirror site that wikipedia uses as an article, when it's clearly not. Please don't do it again. -- Francs2000 | Talk 11:54, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for deleting. I thought that was just a little joke (as it's on my own user page that I think I can take the total control of it). Anyway thanks for removing these useless stuff. Deryck C. 11:57, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reproduction article series (+sex.rep, asex.rep etc)[edit]

As you say, I'm not that good at English as compared to you. If you can, would you please kindly do those changes for me? Deryck C. 15:47, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Peace Dove[edit]

To all participants of the WikiProject Kindness Campaign: There is a proposal on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Kindness Campaign for the Peace Dove. Please comment as you see fit. Thanks, Sango123 16:27, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks very much. I've left a comment to some of the award proposals. Deryck C. 03:39, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar awarding[edit]

Hi Deryck: I noticed your question on Wikipedia talk:Barnstars on Wikipedia. Anyone can award any other user an award. There are no limits. Generally, barnstars are awarded for significant contributions. Some barnstars include guidelines for awarding, which you can find at WP:STAR. If you have any other questions, feel free to leave me a message. Cheers, Bratschetalk 5 pillars 02:57, July 15, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you. I'm just thinking that is there somebody who'll censor the distribution (or awarding) of barnstars. Deryck C. 03:39, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your submission to the pre-round of Wikipedia:Mind Benders! The voting has now begun, and you are welcome to submit one vote! In addition, why not try round one, which is now open? Round one consists of many challenging (I hope) problems that are lots of WikiFun! Hope to see you there! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 15:41, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I voted for myself, of course. Deryck C. 16:16, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
First, I think I might extend the voting. The original idea was for the voting to close as soon as Round 1 finishes, but round 1 went by pretty quickly- all that remains is the bonus question. Thus, I might extend the voting to the end of round 2 (which is considerably harder). After, the winner's entry will be posted as our "logo", and the winner of every round will have the "right" to post it on his/her user page. Winners may feel free to use the other entries, of course. Great job with your work! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 20:54, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You should've told me earlier... I missed the entire round one...

O, I have added that to my page, u r really considerate! I haven't really contributed much...hope that the no. of HK wikipedians would keep increasing!:-D--K.C. Tang 17:10, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, sir! Joe D (t) 16:56, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hong Kong-related Articles[edit]

original message on User talk:Huaiwei:

(peace dove)

It's sometimes difficult to listen to foreigners about their opinions when you're talking about their stuff and quite sure that you're right and they're wrong. However, sometimes things are done that way by custom and it's hard for you to change it.

I myself had been lately in conflicts with some Americans and Australians about the significance of their governments to the entire world. However, what I found out, at last, is the fact that no matter what I do, it makes no effect. The best way to do with foreign stuff is to listen to people from that place.

Therefore, as a foreigner, I hope you can listen to we Hong Kongers' opinions about the Hong Kong relating articles and stop the edit war. To show my concern and courtesy, I'll give you this offering of peace - the peace dove.

Please reply to my talk page if there's any room for further negotiation. Thanks. Deryck C. 16:36, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You might not believe it, but it does bring me pain reading your comment in my page. Yes, it pains me when perfectly normal, non-confrontational, and good-natured people end up getting hurt by missles flying over their heads, intended for targets other then them. You are one of these unfortunate people, I must say, and my greatest wish would be for your to stay as who you are, refrain from slipping into the same trap most people tend to fall into, and to remove emotions from your judgements when it comes to heated debates like anything suggested above, as you have usually done admirably before.

I dont know if you want to know this, but I have little reason to "belittle" HK as how you guys probably like to imagine me as doing. What do I stand to gain, but probably a whole gang of incensed folks dying to twist my neck? It is not so much about me not accepting the views of "foreigners in issues regarding their own city". In fact, I am accustomed to accepting the views of foreigners on Singapore, and I work wth it. i have to, and its part of my "job" so to speak. Nut when it comes to the issue of HKers and their relations with the rest of China, I do find it personally irritating when HKers show an obvious reluctance in being equated with a mainlander in any aspect. I dont think any HK can deny the existance of sinophobia in HK, and yes, it is frighteningly widespread. I dont even need to be in HK to feel it right here across the South China Sea.

Why my irritation? Because I am, as some might call, a "Chinese patriot" of sorts. Not exactly for the country of the PRC, but for Chineseness in its essense. I have no personal links with China....the only link being the fact that I look Chinese, have a Chinese name, and speak Chinese. In fact, I even failed my Chinese-language exams before, and I detested the language for a large part of my life. Of coz I managed to pass them in the end, but not without plenty of snorts at a language I used to consider "useless". Things changed as I grew older, started to appreciate my roots, and had a new found respect for my own ethnic identity. That said, my feelings of Chinesness was not exactly a recent phenomena. I was brought up by a father who proudly considers himself a part of the great Chinese civilisation, and this does rub into me over time. I was proud when Beijing won the right to host the Olympics, and I probably feel more excitement as 2008 approaches then many Chinese nationals. I watched on television, live, the handing over ceremony of the HK handover in 1997, and again, pride washes over me as I saw the Chinese flag taking over the British one. Beautiful. Nevermind the fact that I am anti-communist. Nevermind the fact that I consider the Cultural Revolution the worse tragedy to befall Chinese history. Nevermind that I felt the outcome of the Tiananmen incident as a big wasted opportunity which could have installed democracy in China.

I have often then not openly declared, that my personal dream would be to see a unified China (which includes all entities of Greater China...plus Taiwan) under the democracy flag, an entity which promotes open, fair elections, and is an accountable and responsible member of the global community. Perhaps I am impatient. Perhaps I expect things to fast-forward and end up in a state I would like. But if 1997 and 1999 were to be considered small steps towards the realisation of that goal, then the behavior of individuals who attempt to downplay the soverignty of China over the two SARs is probably a step backward which I find personally offensive.

I know I am rambling now, but I do hope the above may tell you abit more about myself, and the "agenda" behind my actions, if they are interepreted as such. I am particularly sensitive towards any attempt to deny the existance of a unified China (not including Taiwan now, of coz), and I can be ruthless when I sense it. Once in a while, I let things be, in respect of the One country two systems policy. :D You dont find me actively going round trying to add "China" behind every "Hong Kong", nor do you find me trying to remove HK from every single country or national list or category. I must say the reason why I am probably doing it now is because I am reacting to the edits made by Instantnood. I once gave a warning to him to stop scrutinising all of my edits day after day, failing which I may do stupid things. Well, he laughed me off. This is the fruit of his arrogance. I have since sworn to myself that I am going to counter his behavior, whatever it might take, from then on. What you have seen so far are basically part of this little exercise.

Is there a solution to this? Well...I dont know. The last thing I would like to see is individuals like you who bend yourselves backwards to accomodate the feuding behavior of others. If anyting, this notice shouldnt have appear in your talk page. It should be in his. But will he ever send a peace dove? I doubt so, and I doubt I will to. I once contemplated doing it when I asked him to stop scrutinising my edits, in return for a truce in which both of us will stop making any more of these offensive edits until a solution may be found. Unfortunately, that turns out to be wishful thinking. So, I truly appreciate your desires to mend fences and your calls for peace. I would like to assure you that I have never had any intention to cause you distress in any way (including that bunch of text which you reacted very negatively towards in my talk page). If you stepping into the discussions may help to provide a more level-headed discussion to ensue, then yes, by all means. Besides this, I really dont know what else you can do to bring peace here. Pray for my death? :D--Huaiwei 18:13, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Thankzz[edit]

(original message on Instantnood's talk page)Thanks for that little edit that helps our debating XDDD (HKCL article "edit conflict" notice) Deryck C. 17:27, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

Don't say that. I should have thanked you for help defend. :-) — Instantnood 17:32, July 19, 2005 (UTC)
I'll help for this one, because I've found many others in the list of National Libraries whose situations are similar to HKCL. Deryck C. 17:41, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much Deryck. — Instantnood 18:19, July 19, 2005 (UTC)
However, I'm against your view on the Flag of HK article because I really think that FOHK cannot be a "national flag". Deryck C. 06:54, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
