Adrianne Wadewitz Memorial edit-a-thons[edit]

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows:

We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time.

A question on a photo[edit]

Hi Dominic, I don't know if this pinged you or not, but I thought I should drop you a line on your talk page. There's a photo that Adam Cuerden might be able to restore for an article that's currently being reviewed for A-class (and will presumably go on to FAC) but he was curious if a larger version of the photo was available. I'm assuming that it's in NARA's holdings - is that something you could help us track down? (full disclosure, I don't know exactly what your role is and is not, so if this isn't a good use of your time, no problem - but to sweeten the deal, the editor who wrote the article is a WWII veteran who served aboard the ship). Thanks for any help you might be able to provide. Parsecboy (talk) 20:26, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

While I'm hassling you about better-quality scans, I noticed that these three photos are listed as being in NARA's holdings - is there any way we could get updated scans? Many thanks. Parsecboy (talk) 18:54, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
The person who raised Mahan-class destroyer to FA was a WWII veteran who served on the Mahan, so I think this will be an excellent way of thanking him for both his work here and back then. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 18:48, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Hey, Adam, I was just responding at the same time you left the message. Check out the new scans. :-) This is an exciting story. I wonder if there is any way the National Archives can spotlight his work as well. Dominic·t 18:52, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
I think I'll start with the bow image, from the uncropped copy, uploading a similarly-cropped version as well, then move on to the much "dirtier" image that's the lead, since it'll take more time - lots of little hairs on it. Nothing unfixable, just slower. Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:40, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
@Parsecboy: Here are the high-res versions scanned by me of those three images. Plus the second one, which is a slightly blown-up image of the first, and the last one, which is a bonus photo I also found. Dominic·t 21:22, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks very much! Those are excellent - I particularly like the last one. Now I just need to hassle @Adam Cuerden: until he does his restoration magic ;) Parsecboy (talk) 11:55, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Wikisource related query[edit]

Hi,

I was wondering if the National Archives held on file a "Department of the Navy" report into the sinking of the Lusitania?.

All that is needed at this stage is a simple confirmation of such a reports existence.

Longer term, the hope was if the relevant document is digitised and can be OCR processed,, that it could be trasncribed on Wikisouce.

Thanks. (Please respond on my English Wikisource page). ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:03, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
