Image permissions[edit]

Thanks for contacting me. I don't know of a particular set of information that we provide to the author when they let us use their image. When I get permission for an image I usually upload it and the provide a link to the article(s) I added it to. I may point out how many views the article had last month (using this tool), as well as point them to the "check usage" tab at the top of the Wikimedia Commons image so they can always see which of the different language Wikipedias are using their image. Great! I have opened the draft page on my talk page. Will you please show me how the references will appear? Or is this cool? I really want to get this up. The sooner the better. Ronnie Vannucci is an accredited drummer and has been integral in developing a signature style as a drummer. He currently boasts more than 5 major drum making company sponsorships (I can give the refs), has been featured on the cover of at least 3 major drum magazines (I can give the refs), has been voted a winner on the modern drummer readers polls at least twice (I can give the refs), and has helped launch another major label band, Neon Trees from oblivion to a number 1 chart position on the new music alternative charts and a #29 position on the billboard alternative charts (this month).--Waytagojoe (talk) 23:24, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Example Reference[edit]

Here's one example out of Gwen Stefani's page that has Featured Article status: The line achieved popularity among celebrities and is worn by stars such as Teri Hatcher, Nicole Kidman, and Stefani herself.[1]

RV ref from age 6 on.[2] In the reference below, the read-out describes the article and the URL gets hidden from view. The author is put first, then a space, then the URL, then a space, and then a description that you write.

References[edit]

I also try to include a page number and paragraph number so that someone reading the reference will have an easy time finding the backup info. I'll try to find a couple of other good examples, tomorrow. Doc2234 (talk) 02:48, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Image size[edit]

The image pixels will be based on the original size of the image you upload. The more megapixels, usually the larger the size. However, the size of the image can be manipulated within the article itself by adding a size (ex. 300px) within the image formatting. Take a look at some random articles with images and you should see that in the wiki formatting. If the image is free, then it's best to upload it to the largest possible size. However, if it is a non-free image such as a movie poster or a CD cover, then it is required to be uploaded at a smaller size to qualify for fair use requirements. Wikipedia Campus Ambassador at GWU/Georgetown[edit]

Hi Doc2234, thanks for inquiring about the Wikipedia Campus Ambassador role! If you are interested in being a Campus Ambassador at GWU or Georgetown University, I would like to send you the application form. What email address can I send this to? More details about this role can be found at http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Campus_Ambassador. Here is also a little bit more information; in a nutshell: The Campus Ambassadors are crucial components of the Wikipedia Public Policy Initiative. Volunteers in this position will be in charge of training and supporting the participating professors and students on Wikipedia-related skills, such as how to create new articles, how to add images, how the talk pages work, etc. Campus Ambassadors will also help recruit other people on campus to contribute to Wikipedia articles, for example by setting up Wikipedia-related student groups and by organizing "Welcome to Wikipedia" social events. In general they will become known as Wikipedia experts on the university campus (in your case, on the GWU or Georgetown University campus). The estimated time commitment for this role is 3 to 5 hours a week, possibly slightly more at the very beginning and very end of the semester. The Wikimedia Foundation will hold a mandatory three-day training for all Campus Ambassadors in August, and will continue to stay in contact with and offer full support for the Campus Ambassadors throughout the academic semester.

It looks like all my attempts to improve the page have failed. I will check again in a few days to determine what should happen. If all the problems are still there, with no attempt to correct mistakes or rm insertion of essentially spam, I will make a determination based on the response to my suggestions. Gund[edit]

Certainly I'll help. I'm glad you're busy; most architects aren't, as you obviously are aware, so make hay while the sun shines. Student7 is correct in matters of style: you should avoid adjectives and honorifics, boiling it all down into encyclopedic prose that clearly states why a person is significant and backing it up with references. Gund passes the notability standard with flying colors, but much the same situation exists at any number of architecture-related bios. Articles on firms and individual architects are in general pretty sorry, either unreferenced stubs or PR pieces edited by the subject's marketing person. Honestly, I think at this point it's deletion-proof; there's clear evidence of notability documented in multiple national publications, as well as a specific book devoted to the firm. However, it would be nice to get behind the paywalls and reference some of the coverage in the major papers. Also, the monograph (the portions available on Google) has material that can be referenced back to it. I'd like to get his bio referenced better, particularly links back to his father and brothers. His work as a developer needs more referencing and discussion.
Gund's work tends to be middle-profile, relatively small in scope, with no big set-piece Gehry-style extravaganzas that get all the attention. The list of projects should span the life of the firm and avoid recentism, but should focus on projects that have won significant notice or awards. The list should have a structure, probably chronological, and be choosy. There's no reason to list every project, just the ones that have gotten press (which can then be referenced). Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup![edit]

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

John Nicholas Brown III, the "richest boy in the world," and reputed heir to $75,000,000, arrived in Pasadena over the Salt Lake at 9:45 o'clock yesterday morning in the Brown private car "Boston." With the other members of his party he was taken by automobile to the Huntington Hotel, where he was put to bed, suffering with a cold.

It is John Nicholas Brown II. He was reportedly the wealthiest baby in America. The Los Angeles Times article is in error. There was no other John Nicholas besides his father descending from either his tree starting with Nicholas Brown 1729-91, or from John Brown 1736-1803, or Moses Brown 1738-1836. There is much left to add to the Wikipedia page entry. Many significant details should be added to provide a complete picture of his contributions from both business and cultural standpoints. DC Meetup: May 7 @ Tenleytown Library[edit]

The next DC Wikimedia meetup is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 3:30-5:30 pm at the Tenleytown Library (adjacent to the Tenleytown Metro Station, Red Line), followed by dinner & socializing at some nearby place.

Wikipedia categorizes things by straight descriptions of what the article topic is. For instance, we don't file musical groups in "musician" categories; we file them in "musical group" categories. A collective of multiple fashion designers is not an individual fashion designer any more than a band is an individual musician; the only thing that belongs in that category is articles about individual people. Image permission[edit]

Since the image is available under one of the compatible free licenses and the permission has already been verified, it should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. That way, the Italian and all other language Wikipedias can use it. The guide for moving the file can be found at Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons. National Archives ExtravaSCANza[edit]

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. Being angry[edit]

Dealing with this: please don't use the claim you're the victim of an alleged persecution as a sort of general purpose-excuse: simply I think that page is not relevant to Wikipedia. I made a proposal for deletion and now it.wiki's community can both decide to accept or reject it. If it gets kept, you can count yourself lucky. If not, don't blame yourself since you did everything you could. At the very least the deletion discussion is lively and has plenty of participants, much better than on the Dutch wiki. I don't know if their default "no consensus" is to keep, but that's where it would be headed on the English wiki, as far as I can tell (I obviously haven't scrutinized all the arguments, though Google Translate does make this a lot more fun). Savourna Stevenson[edit]

Thanks for your kind response with clear and helpful advice to a novice Wikipedian. As I started out with no background knowledge of Wikipedia policies, but with some knowledge about Savourna Stevenson, I simply started out editing her article in a similar style and format to the existing article - without realizing that the existing article is not a very good template to start with. I shall take your sound advice and start with the references first, and build out from that. I am fortunate in that I do have access to many references, both in the form of actual newpaper and magazine articles, and also because the name 'Savourna' appears to be completely unique, so that simply typing Savourna into google generates a huge response which is entirely about her. Try doing that with almost any other name you can think of and it's just not at all helpful! I have never seen Catrin Finch play live, but hope to see her play Savourna Stevenson's new Concerto. Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries[edit]

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Deletions[edit]

Your rationale for deleting the content at Dale Bozzio is spurious. From the article history, it's clear to me you're on a mission to whitewash anything you don't like, especially anything negative, from that article. BLP does not say that negative content can't be added to articles about living people, it says it must be well sourced. The Boston Phoenix is an award winning arts and leisure publication, not a "tabloid". If you want to delete that content, you'll need to make a correct argument because the one you made is not valid whatsoever. You do not WP:OWN that article. I won't delete reliably-sourced and pertinent content. It does not violate Libel in any way, the sources are perfectly acceptable, and again, BLP does not prohibit negative content, it only says that it must be well sourced and written in a neutral manner (which it is). I could be persuaded that the mention does not belong in the lede, but a single paragraph, reliably sourced, is not a BLP violation and says nothing that any of the many newspapers did not already say three years ago. Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition[edit]

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.

The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. In addition, we will be exhibiting the finalists of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest at the event.

An exciting month of wiki events![edit]

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Washington, DC meetups in June[edit]

Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:

  • On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
  • Saturday, June 14 is the Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon from 11 AM to 4 PM. Help improve local history on Wikipedia.
  • The following Saturday, June 21, is the June Meetup. Dinner and drinks with Wikipedians!
  • Come on Tuesday, June 24 for the Wikipedia in Your Library edit-a-thon at GWU on local and LGBT history.
  • Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.

Wikipedia is better with friends, so why not come out to an event?

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July[edit]

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. If you would like to sign up for the picnic, you can do so here. When signing up, say what you’re going to bring!

July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Battle of Fort Stevens Edit-a-Thon![edit]

Sorry for the last minute update, but our friends at the DC Historical Society have scheduled a Battle of Fort Stevens Edit-a-Thon to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War battle fought in the District. The event will last from noon to 2 PM on Wednesday, July 30. Hope you can make it!
