Photos

Dwight, I wanted to thank you for all the photos you've been adding. I wanted to suggest that, as you upload your images to Commons, you might consider making sure the categories you are using are reasonably specific, and feel free to create new categories if it seems appropriate. For example, you had 8 images from around Ypsi Twp, all put in "Category:Townships in the United States". I've gone ahead and created a category for Ypsi Twp, made it a subcategory of new category Townships in Michigan, making the latter a subcategory of Townships in the United States. In addition to making things tidier on Commons, that lets us use {{Commonscat}} (see [1]) to link to that category. Creating categories is easy. It works the same on Commons and on Wikipedia, and it's basically the same as creating a new article. Really the hardest part is the first step, which is deciding whether you need a new category and if so, what it should be called. Take the case of the Ypsi Twp photos on Commons. There were enough photos (and the potential for many more) that I decided it made sense to make a category. I thought about calling it "Category:Ypsilanti Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan", which I think is how the Superior Twp category is named. But I'm fairly confident that there's only just the one Ypsilanti Township, so I decided to call it "Category:Ypsilanti Township, Michigan". Then put the first image into the category, by typing [[Category:Ypsilanti Township, Michigan]]. This will work if it's anywhere on the page, but customarily it goes at the very bottom of everything. After you save that edit, if the category doesn't yet exist you will get a red link. (If you don't get a red link, it means that category already exists -- make sure it's really want you want and not something else that shares the same name.) Click on the red link and, just as with a Wikipedia article, you will invited to create the page, which in this case is a category. For categories, just put a very brief description on it so anyone looking at it knows what it is (I usually just take the intro to the Wikipedia article on that topic) and then put it into at least one higher-level category. Sometimes you have to create a category structure as you go, as I did (rather than putting my new Category:Ypsilanti Township, Michigan right into Category:Townships in the United States, I put it into Category:Townships in Michigan, which was then also a red link and I had to in turn create that within the US category). I hope that was clear; it really is a simple process, and sometimes the simplest processes can be the hardest to explain. For more information on categories (probably more than you will ever want to know), you could consult Wikipedia:Categorization, Help:Category, and Wikipedia:FAQ/Categorization. I'm sure similar pages exist on Commons too, but again, the process is exactly the same. Let me know if that doesn't make sense or if part of what I wrote is unclear. Altarum Logo

Hello. I'm sorry if I caused you any offence by replacing the JPG file with a PNG. Over the last couple of days I've been working through the backlog of JPG files tagged for replacing with PNG files. I looked through the Gallery of new files and saw the Altarum Institute logo and decided to re-upload it as a PNG. I meant no disrespect towards you. Hugahoody (talk) 17:45, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

I have no intention of plagarising any work of any other user, I am just seeking to work through the backlog of files that have been tagged to be replaced by PNG files. Since you had uploaded a JPG format image I could not upload a PNG version over it, the file had to be separate. It was also created directly from the subject's website using an edited screenshot. RE: Move of Harbor Freight Tools picture

The article is a business stub, and moving the picture to a more appropriate section of the page formats the article in a manner that is similar to other business stub pages i.e.:Walmart or General_Electric or Microsoft. The picture at the top of the page also shifts the entire top portion over to the right without word wrapping on larger monitors, forcing the contents box to float in the middle of the screen appearing awkward and out of place. The consistency of the formatting of the article is more important than the location of the picture

Brighton Airport

You wrote that you had assessed your own article as start class. Don't get annoyed if an editor doesn't give your articles the rating you think they deserve, everything is fluid in Wikipedia, not set in stone. Having said that, I would rate the Brighton airport article as a stub too, as there is just not enough content to justify it as start clas. Now, as you improve and add to the article it can be re-assessed, you can even ask directly for an article to be reviewed by peers who will give constructive criticism to the author rather than just editting the article.

Many editors/authors starting on Wikipedia fell that they are being picked on. Do not despair, it is just the nature of the beast that editors will wade in and edit artivcles without the original authors permission, as they are entitled to do. If you don't like what was done converse with the editor on his talk page, but don't expect an instant answer, it may be days or weeks before the editor logs on again.

You also mentioned on my user page, (should have been on my talk page), that I had opened talk pages for some of your articles but I cannot for the life of me remember which/ Do you want me to have a look at the article sfor you, as an informal peer review? if you do just post a link on my User talk page.Petebutt (talk) 13:55, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Image sizes

You should not add pixel sizes to normal images thumbnails without good reason. If you don't specify a size it lets user preferences take precedence. See Wikipedia:MOSIMAGES. I removed the size from the image you added to Indian (motorcycle) --Biker Biker (talk) 14:22, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

I don't understand why you see a copyright problem with the picture. It is not a poster. It is an historical marker in a public place. It has the emblem of the National Park Service on it. Enterprise Holdings

Hey, I noticed you moved the photo that I added to that page downwards. I realize that you are the author of the original photo and are invested in its placement in the article. However, I think that the one that I added more clearly shows the Enterprise location by showing the logo on the building very clearly both in the full-size photo and, more importantly to the casual reader, in the article thumbnail. I don't at all agree that the added photo is superior. My photo shows an entire building with an entire sign with entire cars. The added photo shows part of a building, with part of a car with a sign that is partially obscured by a pole. I don't see how we can come to a consensus on this. I know it's difficult to watchlist all the articles that one adds photos to, because there are many changes that have nothing to do with the photo and so you tend to stop looking. For this reason I created a tool that one can run periodically that will check a list of all the articles you have photos in and tell you if they are no longer there. Leonard Wood article

According to WP:NOTNEWSPAPER : "News reports. Wikipedia considers the enduring notability of persons and events. Newt Gingrich's comments about Romney and his comparison to Leonard Wood have no enduring significance what so ever, particularly to Leonard Wood's legacy. The spike in views is temporary. That's what I originally deleted it and that's what I just deleted it again. If you want to readd it, take it to the admin.

I am an Army combat veteran and knew about Fort Leonard Wood because, among other things, my older brother was also an Army combat veteran and did his basic training there. I never knew for whom the Fort was named, but because of of Newt Gingrich's comment, I took the trouble to look it up, like many others. The comment has obviously had a significant impact on Leonard Wood's legacy. Whatever the merit of the comment, it had the effect of evoking the memory of Leonard Wood, and adding to his legacy. That is the point of mentioning it. Normally, I wouldn't bother to pursue this, because having a single edit undone is not that big of a deal, but I'm going to make an exception in this case, because I've been insulted by the insinuation that my addition to the article had a political motivation. I'm flabbergasted by the insinuation. To what end was my contribution serving a political purpose? I'm going to undo the deletion and you are the one who can take this to admin if you want. I was also in the army and I did my basic at Ft. Sill. Newt Gingrich's comparison of Romney to Leonard Wood was hardly a compliment to Leonard Wood. He was saying he was one of the worst Republican nominations in the party's history, so I don't see how adding Gingrich's quote evokes the memory of Leonard Wood. If someone trashed Joshua W. Sill, I would not add the quote to his wikipedia page. And to my point, doesn't it seem like Gingrich's comments are a bit stale now weeks after the quote? But none of this matters. See WP:BRD, which stands for Bold, Revert, Discuss. You were bold in adding the link, I reverted you. Your next move should not have been to revert my reversion; your move should have been to open a discussion on the article's talk page. In short, I don't think that the link is appropriate. Frains Lake Road isn't notable, so it doesn't warrant an article. That it connects to Frains Lake, Michigan doesn't even warrant a link from M-153's article, in my opinion. I could rewrite that sentence to eliminate the mention of the road without altering the key description of the routing of M-153. The curve in the road isn't even next to Frains Lake, nor is M-153 adjacent to the community, so if copy edited, any mention of Frains Lake would be obliviated.

The article you created is borderline on the notability question, so I'm proposing that it be merged into its township article. (See the discussion I'm opening on the issue for more details. In the future though, if you have an issue with an edit of yours that is reverted, please discuss it. I did assume good faith, but such an assumption does not require that I not disagree with the appropriateness of the link. Notability is the stock and trade of what gets included around here. That road is not notable; it would never get its own article. The community is borderline notable, and not even located on the road in question. Look, I could have tagged the community article for deletion, instead I've tried to fix it up a bit for you. I just don't agree that we need a link to it from the M-153 article. I've even reverted vandalism in the past that removed your fair-use uploads from articles, enlisted admins to help watch the situation so that the vandalism didn't remove the logo from the article for a long enough period that the logo was summarily deleted. We just disagree here on a link about a gravel road that is only mentioned because said non-notable, rural gravel road happens to be near a direction change in a state highway. I don't think the link is needed, nor useful, as it implies that there is something more to this road than its existence, and a tangential connection to a borderline notable former community. Consensus by silence is the weakest form. Once challenged, it is up to the opponents of the challenge to affirmatively demonstrate that consensus still exists for their viewpoint. It doesn't matter if that challenge to the status quo comes after a day, a week or seven years. In any event, my proposed merger (have you looked at it?) retains the existing content of the three articles and produces a stronger, more vibrant end product. Anyone brought to the article on Superior Township, whether by a link directly to Superior Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan or through the redirects from Dixboro, Michigan and Frains Lake, Michigan would receive the full wealth of that information on a set of interconnected topics. The merged article wouldn't be too long, so WP:SIZE concerns wouldn't be present. It's a net positive for our readers. (And there would still be a link to your Frains Lake information in the M-153 article because that article links a couple of times directly to township article.) I have done southwest Oakland County photos, but that was when I was willing to travel further than I am now willing to do so. Unfortnately, I eventually concluded that the more you contribute to Wikipedia, the more time you have to spend fighting 'edit wars' and I just got tired of it.
