Historiography and Digital History[edit]
Hello Eirwen! To answer your question, I would say that generally, the people who are able to contribute the most to an article are the ones who have the most free time to spend editing here - so, in other words, never the professional scholars. Sometimes that works out well; amateurs can have access to the same sources as professionals, and it is possible for amateurs to produce very good articles here, or a group of amateurs and professionals working together. On the other hand, it also sometimes happens that an amateur is stuck on using one particular source that might be a fringe source, or just completely out of date. Or they have a particular topic that they are hung up on and they distort the sources to emphasize it. (Professionals do this too...just not on Wikipedia...)
I would suggest talking to someone who is much more active than me, and who has created several dozen Good and Featured articles on medieval topics, and who, as far as I am aware, is not a professional historian: User:Ealdgyth.
