Please review my software article[edit]

Hello! I have created an article in my sandbox space titled Mobility as a Service. It would be nice if you could review it and provide me feedback. Its one of my first articles. Thus, have lots to learn.. Please let me know if it is ready to be moved to main space. PCJain (talk) 07:00, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted Userbox[edit]

I see why you would delete that userbox, and I should have worded it better. I have replaced it on my user page with a completely unrelated one. I would also like to let you know that I am over 13, in case you are concerned about it. NotAnonymous0 (talk) 06:04, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And if experienced users could use the template?[edit]

Hello, Fran

Thanks for your message about templating experienced users. I am wondering what you suggest when somebody like User:Okip makes a series of edits [9] or [13] edits long. I'd think Okip's experience would have led Okip to take some other approach, but then, I see a lot of people unaware of the tools available. The template for previewing was a handy (and I thought, polite enough) way to point it out.

And I am aware of WP:Don't template the regulars. In fact, the template was really just the wagon for me to roll my personal note into Okip's talk page, not unlike the suggestion at the end of this.

Do you, personally, go get a template, expand it, copy and paste the text, tweak it to make it your own, and then add that to a Talk page (of a regular)? Because that's what I probably would have done to avoid templating Okip for something as simple and (to me) obvious as using the preview function. I frankly didn't want to spend that much time on something so basic. Preview seems like something any newbie should catch on to before their fifth edit. Sincere regards. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 23:37, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If someone makes a mistake, just fix it (this being a wiki) and kindly point it out to them if need be. No need for templated warnings, or exhortations to use the "Preview" button. Fran Rogers 01:59, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's it...[edit]

I think it's time for me to log another complaint to BellSouth re. Bambifan101 since it sure as shooting looks as if they did zilch before. If you have the IP handy, could I impose on you to maybe file an abuse report over here? We're going on four years of this squirrel. Thanks.  :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 04:00, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't have the IP address; I only tweaked the block to disable talk page editing since he was cluttering up the list of unblock requests repeatedly. Maybe a checkuser would be able to help? Fran Rogers 04:10, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's what I may have to do for the umpteenth time. I've blocked no less than four entire BellSouth ranges and his school IP and still he continues. I hope to high heaven that no one sees fit to honor his unblock request. Twice I offered to mentor him and twice he threw it back in my face. Add to that the sockpuppetry on top of personal attacks on me and other users - not to mention the subtle, sneaky vandalism - and the Foundation would have to be deemed completely insane to extend an unblock. Anyway, I think I'm going to avoid this site for the weekend.  :) Take care and thanks. Regards, --PMDrive1061 (talk) 04:19, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Flagcruft[edit]

Can you recreate Flagcruft. I've just linked 100+ edit summaries to it and it may be confusing ? It should be ok to delete in a week or so Gnevin (talk) 17:58, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It would have been wiser to not use a divisive term like "cruft" when making mass edits. Going back and clarifying what you meant would be a better solution. Fran Rogers 18:09, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive[edit]

WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of April. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 200. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. If you are interested in participating in the drive, please place your name here. Awards will be given out to those who review certain numbers of GANs as well as to those who review the most. Hope we can see you in April.

April Fools[edit]

It is an obvious and strongly followed point that april fools jokes should not disrupt the running of the wiki. Could you explain why the HELLS you coated a dozen users' pages with pictures of jimbo's ugly bearded fizzogg? Ironholds (talk) 00:30, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop. If you continue to add nonsense to other users' CSS files, you'll be done with editing for the rest of the day. Nakon 04:33, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You do realize I was only editing acquaintances' pages, right? And that pretty much all of them have appreciated the laugh it brought to their day? Geez, you need to lighten up. Fran Rogers 04:38, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fran, you are destroying the friendly environment that Wikipedia is known for! Killiondude (talk) 17:34, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you added the OTRS permission to this image. The text on the file page suggests that the image was released under the GNU license, yet the license found is a public domain license. Could you check the OTRS ticket for clarity? Thank you. Hekerui (talk) 17:31, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw that the OTRS note mentions GFDL, so the PD tag was only accidentally left on the site. I think that clear it up. Best Hekerui (talk) 17:40, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just a thank you note[edit]

I noticed that last year you deleted a subpage of mine detailing the contact the good Mr. Brandt had had with me, and the harassment I received from him. I dont edit wikipedia as much as I used to and didn't notice it was gone for a while. The page had clearly outlived its usefulness and if anything had morphed into something akin to what I was accusing him of, namely harassment. I much appreciate the fact that you dumped it, and just wanted to give you something of a hearty thanks. --Mask? 23:14, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Watt2005.jpg[edit]

I'm contacting you, I guess, on behalf of User:Cjmarsicano regarding the image you deleted File:Watt2005.jpg. As laid out at Talk:Mike Watt#Who's the douchebag responsible? I believe the image to have been wrongly deleted, and am contacting the administrator who deleted it per Wikipedia:Deletion review#Instructions.

In brief, User:Cjmarsicano uploaded the image after receiving it and rights to use it on Wikipedia from Mike Watt. The image was deleted on Wikipedia per CSD because it had apparently been uploaded to Commons. However, it was then deleted from Commons because it was considered that the permission to use the file on Wikipedia did not extend to Commons.

Thus, the file should not have been uploaded to commons and should not have then been deleted from Wikipedia (and it would not have been necessary then to delete from Commons). As such it should be "un-deleted". Thanks. Hyacinth (talk) 08:41, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the user who uploaded the image may be upset with you for not giving notice regarding the deletion. The user's attitude seems negative in general (for example the notice at the top of User talk:Cjmarsicano), so it is hard to tell. Hyacinth (talk) 08:57, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I see that you have deleted File:Södermalm.JPG, because you concluded that the file had been correctly transferred to Commons. From what I can see of the upload log, it was supposedly a "{{PD}} picture by uploader" (User:Batintherain). At Commons, it is currently marked as {{GFDL-en}} without naming an author (as required by that license). As I can't see what edits may have been made to the file description page here after the file was uploaded, I'd appreciate it if you could clarify the situation. If, despite your previous assertion, the file description on Commons does not match the one here, please fix any discrepancies. LX (talk, contribs) 16:59, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This file has now been dealt with. The original file was undeleted and the information was corrected. As suspected, the GFDL claim was incorrect. LX (talk, contribs) 19:21, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of WP:VG Wikipedia ad[edit]

Hi there! I was going to the WP:VG WikiProject page when I noticed you deleted our Wikipedia ad per CSD F8. Although there is a file of the same name at the Commons here, there is no image at the page. After discussion at the WikiProject talkpage, we're not really sure how this ended up happening, but we were wondering if you could restore the ad to its prior state on Wikipedia? -- Nomader (Talk) 16:42, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well that was odd, looks like there was a glitch in the Wikimedia system and the image appeared as a redlink. The issue seems to be resolved now, sorry for bothering you. -- Nomader (Talk) 21:14, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NYC Meetup: Saturday, December 4[edit]

We meet outside by the trees at 5:00 PM.

Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.

This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!

Are you maintaining the Commons Helper Helper script?[edit]

The script doesn't seem to be working, the talk page has comments from last year and before that say it wasn't working then, yet all of the move to commons instructions say this script is the way to go. I don't even get a button. Can you check things out and maybe deprecate the script or at least note on the move to commons pages that there may be problems? I'm using Firefox 3.6.13 on Mac OS X 10.5.8. I use WikiEd and a number of other scripts. Thanks.--Doug.(talk contribs) 13:49, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Main page[edit]

What goes on the main page on April Fool's day is subject to quite some discussion and controversy. Stuff like this is an absolute no-go. Amalthea 20:31, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

April Fool's is supposed to be about pranks. If the Wikipedia community would rather insist on celebrating the day with unfunny "wacky" featured articles and factoids, they're free to, but they're missing the point. :p Fran Rogers (talk) 20:39, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I for one am of the opinion that we need to walk that line on the reader-facing side of Wikipedia, and make do with the reverse pranks on the main page. I realize that a peeking Jimbo on the main page is probably only surprising and funny if you're not prepared for it (if then), but feel of course free to talk to folks about it; but I'd eat my hat if you found anything close to consensus for it.
But yeah, I may miss the point of April Fool's.
Cheers, Amalthea 20:50, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously. Too much of an "in-joke" to be funny. Gags in non-mainspace are all good (two years ago about 50 editors all carbon coppied my sig. for an April 1st laugh after all) - MFD's of ANI, Joke RFA's etc. - but screwing the commonly seen areas - particularly the main page with a reference 99% of visitors won't get (Jimbo's head) - is going a bit far. Problem with the CommonsHelper Helper?[edit]

Greetings. The will be a drive in September to move images to the Commons, and Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons suggests using your CommonsHelper Helper script to do so. However, it does not seem to be working for me.

I am using Chrome in Windows 7. I have a valid TUSC account, and I have included your script in my common.js page. I changed my preferences to "Show preview on first edit", and restarted my browser. When I pull up an image page, such as File:Army mil-2008-08-06-070653.jpg, I click "edit" as the instructions say to do. When I then click "Move image to Commons", nothing happens. Do you know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, – Quadell (talk) 13:56, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In response to the many CommonsHelper Helper requests[edit]

CommonsHelper Helper is obsolete. Since approximately 2008, CommonsHelper itself started handling uploads using its own file upload bot, so my tool is no longer needed/maintained. Sorry for any confusion. :) Fran Rogers (talk) 17:19, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted[edit]

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 00:31, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Shell Forkbomb[edit]

Hi there, I'm the author of the artwork :(){ :|:& };: and I've noticed you have removed the credit to my work in this edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fork_bomb&diff=478538756&oldid=478067768 can you please explain why? your comment is not exhaustive while your edit eliminated a whole lot of information. now there isn't a way anymore to acknowledge that such a forkbomb was also exhibited as an art-piece

some references about it in the art world are here: http://jaromil.dyne.org/journal/forkbomb_art.html I do believe it is a relevant interdisciplinary link to be taken into account. thanks for your concerns and attention to details kind regards

jaromil (talk) 16:45, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Usenet archives cite from that paragraph indicates that this particular fork bomb was known since at least 1999, contrary to the claim that you authored it in 2002. Hence, the attribution is inaccurate. (And illustrative of the pitfalls of relying on a self-published, first-party source.) Fran McCrory (talk) 02:58, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I did not know about its existance. I also don't know what do you mean by "authored", however i wrote a text for the I LOVE YOU art exhibition in 2002 (that was the date of the first exhibition in Frankfurt MAK)
if we are talking about art, I'm not sure what that word means for you, but "details" like context, concept, presentation can't be ignored. Following your reasoning, Andy Warhol would have never be shown in any museum.

WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)[edit]

Hello, you are receiving this message because you are currently a participant of WikiProject Good articles. Since the creation of the WikiProject, over 200 user's have joined to help review good article nominations and contribute to other sections of the WikiProject. Over the years, several of these users have stopped reviewing articles and/or have become inactive with the project but are still listed as participates. In order to improve communications with other participants and get newsletters sent out faster (newsletters will begin to be sent out monthly starting in October) all participants that are no longer active with the WikiProject will be removed from the participants list.

If you are still interested in being a participant for this WikiProject, please sign your user name here and please help review some articles so we can reduce the size of the backlog. If you are no longer interested, you do not need to sign your name anywhere and your name will be removed from the participants list after the deadline. Remember that even if you are not interested at this time, you can always re-add your name to the list whenever you want. The deadline to sign your name on the page above will be November 1, 2012. Thank-you. 13:26, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Update for: WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)[edit]

Sorry for having to send out a second message but a user has brought to my attention that a point mentioned in the first message should be clarified. If user's don't sign on this page, they will be moved to an "Inactive Participants" list rather then be being removed from the entire WikiProject. Sorry for any confusion.--Dom497 (talk)15:16, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of change[edit]

Hello. You are receiving this message because of a recent change to the administrator policy that alters what you were told at the time of your desysopping. The effect of the change is that if you are inactive for a continuous three year period, you will be unable to request return of the administrative user right. This includes inactive time prior to your desysopping if you were desysopped for inactivity and inactive time prior to the change in policy. Inactivity is defined as the absence of edits or logged actions. Until such time as you have been inactive for three years, you may request return of the tools at the bureaucrats' noticeboard. After you have been inactive for three years, you may seek return of the tools only through WP:RFA. Thank you. MBisanz talk 00:20, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
