Recent Message

I received a message from you recently concerning a joke-edit on the following article:

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

I have had the Alureon.A virus on my PC these past couple of days which, according to microsoft, can "allow attackers to transmit malicious data to the infected computer"(http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Virus:Win32/Alureon.A). This virus corrupted my boot sector and as such, I wasn't able to use my machine, and therefore did not edit any article. Just want to apologize though if this virus has allowed my ip/machine/whatever to be used by someone else to alter the contents of the page.

Phenoxybenzmine

I came on here to ask why you removed the possible uses of phenoxybenzamine, but just now i checked the page again and you added loads on this investigational use. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Larryisgood (talkcontribs) 19:24, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the wishes! I'm fine, started PhD in clinical genomics, also working on my blog (Scienceroll.com) and now I try to spend much more time on WP than in the last couple of months. Excellent. Will comment tomorrow (haven't slept in 48 hours, will now slink off to bed with a glass of iced tea and a blister pack of painkillers). Fvasconcellos (t·c) 23:22, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
I do hope you are feeling better. Thanks for your careful copyedits. They are very good. In this edit you changed the "as of" from 2008 to 2009. The reason I put 2008 was that although the source was published in print in 2009, it was available online on 24 September 2008 and accepted on 20 June 2008. Thoughts? Colin°Talk 20:56, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Aha! Thank you for clarifying that, I should have checked the original source. See my more-than-willing strong support and minor quibbles at the FAC. When can I review Tuberous sclerosis? :) Seriously, what's your next project? Would you be willing to help me with WT:MED#Metformin FA push if time permits? Best as always, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 21:04, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Of course I'd like you help you with Metformin. Do you mind if I worry about my FAC just now and I'll get back to you. Ping me if I forget. Fancy a challenge? Can you turn ketogenic diet's single redlink (caprylidene) blue? There could be a DYK in it for you? Colin°Talk 21:41, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
I do love a challenge. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 21:43, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

How do you "collapse the section" on FAC? Colin°Talk 21:35, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

With {{collapse top}} and {{collapse bottom}} or {{hidden}}. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 21:38, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Disappointed in you, Fvasconcellos. Here I am with some sources of questioned reliability on caprylidene. And I notice that it has turned blue. Great! Fvasconcellos will have written a nice wee article based on WP:MEDRS sources. Perhaps even a dead tree source with a reputable publisher and an ISBN. I'll pinch one of his. Very disappointed. ;-) Colin°Talk 17:58, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

As am I, sir. Drugs.com? I've used it for ages and never had a complaint... :) Seriously, as it is a medical food and not a drug, WP:MEDRS will be quite hard to find. "Caprylidene" is not an INN or USAN, for example, and gets no hits on PubMed; I'll have to find out the code name and track down the original clinical trials... Fvasconcellos (t·c) 18:41, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
This questionable source hints that an early brand name idea was "Ketasyn". The code name was "AC-1202". The Prescribing Information sheet lists some trials. Those should turn up more sources for you. Colin°Talk 19:02, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
Great, thanks for finding that! Fvasconcellos (t·c) 02:13, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Metformin

Hey, no problem, good luck with getting it over the line. Cheers - Mr Bungle | talk 05:07, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

A
B

Hi Fvasconcellos. I've started looking at Metformin. Exploring the history led me to synthalin on which I've assembled enough sources for a reasonable stub. I'm out of time tonight but I'll try to turn it blue tomorrow. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Commons had some SVG chemical structure diagrams of Synthalin A and Synthalin B for me to use. Hint, hint. Bailey 2004 is one source that has the images (watch: the diagrams spells them wrong with an "e" rather than an "a"). Page 276 of ["Drug discovery: a history" by Walter Sneader. John Wiley and Sons, 2005. ISBN: 0471899798.] has alternative images. This page is the first Google Books result for "synthalin b". Colin°Talk 22:37, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Why of course sir! Thank you so much for taking an interest in this. With you, TSC, JFW and David on board and help from many other kind folks (such as Mr Bungle above), metformin will be a model for collaborative effort if and when it ever makes it over the line. I still haven't gotten to those questionable sources yet (hint, hint er—nudge, nudge?) so no DYK for caprylidene, sadly. I've just finished a huge project preparing some articles for publication and will probably have time in a couple of days... meanwhile, cystic fibrosis lingers at FAR and I haven't made good on my offer to help. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 22:53, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
Here you go. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 23:45, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for adding sources, I just was going to do that. The Sceptical Chymist (talk) 03:10, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

No problem, and thank you for clarifying and citing that "dangling" statement. By the way, I see you haven't managed to look past those minor inaccuracies I pointed out in Metformin: The Gold Standard :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 12:10, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
"Minor inaccuracies" indicate shoddy work. As reading other Baily's opuses confirms. The Sceptical Chymist (talk) 04:55, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Lipschütz ulcer

Updated DYK query On December 10, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Lipschütz ulcer, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. Sertraline

Unfortunately, your protection of Sertraline did nothing to bring Editor 182 to the Talk page. At the same time, it locked the page indefinitely in a suboptimal version. The Sceptical Chymist (talk) 12:25, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Ah yes, that would be m:The Wrong Version, a time-honored and often infuriating provision of our protection policy. I would suggest you try to engage him at his Talk page, but seeing Literaturegeek's comments below makes me wonder whether it would be useful. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 14:13, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I know about the m:The Wrong Version. That is why I did not suggest that you revert yourself. However, Editor182 responded to my note on Sertraline Talk page[1] by vandalizing my user page[2], and he simply deleted[3] my attempt to engage him on his talk page. So I wonder... The Sceptical Chymist (talk) 14:44, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

I would like to add to what The Sceptical Chymist has said. I have noticed user Editor182 popping up on my watch list and his edits are generally harmful; for example randomly adding fact tags for cited content, making changes which worsen the article etc. Furthermore he just blanks any warnings that he receives from other editors as soon as he gets them so he cannot be communicated with. I think that he may need to be indefinitely blocked. Maybe that is a bit of an extreme measure at this point but I mean if he continues being disruptive then this may be a required action in my view.--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 13:34, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Let's keep blocking on the backburner for the time being. I don't see a rationale for it yet. I presume we have a rough consensus that the stable version defended by TSC is better? Would you mind leaving your opinion at Talk:Sertraline? Fvasconcellos (t·c) 14:13, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
I was thinking of his edits to other articles, I have not analysed/reviewed the dispute on the sertraline article other than noticing an edit war. I am reviewing it now.--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 15:11, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
FV, a clear consensus (3 vs 1) is now established at sertraline page. Furthermore, Editor182 did not offer any valid argument (except "I like it so"[4]) in favor of his version. Please restore the previous stable version. Thank you. The Sceptical Chymist (talk) 14:44, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Unwikilawyering pact? Seriously...

I am trying[5] to get Colin agree not to cite any guidelines at each other (Jove be my witness: we know them well enough :(( ) and rather argue on merits and common sense. Care to join the pact?

Ah, afraid I couldn't do that. You see, common sense if far more variable than its name would imply. Think of the policies and guidelines as the common sense of Wikipedians, codified over time :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 21:09, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
Well, I tried... I hope that my and your common sense are not far apart. May I at least ask you to try not to refer to the alphabet soup of guidelines and essays needlessly as here [6], here [7] and here [8]? When you do that, it is somewhat similar to templating the regulars. The Sceptical Chymist (talk) 06:00, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Hey, I will try to reduce the number of WP: citations in my responses. But remember that the article take page isn't a private email and it isn't your talk page. A discussion there will have other readers at the time, and other readers in the future. There are times when it is helpful to remind all readers that one's argument isn't personal but comes from policy, and when one's argument is attacked, then "quoting scripture" is a natural defence. Happy New Year!

A noiseless patient spider,
I mark'd where on a little promontory it stood isolated,
Mark'd how to explore the vacant vast surrounding,
It launch'd forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself,
Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them.

And you O my soul where you stand,
Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them,
Till the bridge you will need be form'd, till the ductile anchor hold,
Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul."

Structure request: Panal

Hi Fvas! I was wondering if you might be willing to draw a structure for the sesquiterpene panal, to be placed in the article Panellus stipticus. I currently have a cadinane skeleton in there now (also drawn by you!), but the specific compound would be so much better. Somewhat medicine-related bio

Fvasconcellos, SandyGeorgia recommended that I seek your advice concerning the biography of Harvey Whittemore, founder of the Whittemore Peterson Institute. My post to Sandy Georgia was:

Would you mind taking a quick look at Harvey Whittemore and commenting on potential BLP violations? I have edited the Xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus article since mid-October. Observing intense POV editing and recruitment by chronic fatigue syndrome patients and advocates, I created Whittemore Peterson Institute in an attempt to shunt the divisive editing atmosphere away from XMRV and into an article where the dictates of WP:MEDRS would not be paramount. During my research, I discovered that a founder of the institute, Harvey Whittemore, is a rather notable and interesting individual, and I created an article about him, as well. Several of the CFS advocates have labeled this biography with NPOV and BLP tags. In my obviously quite biased opinion, the biography is well-referenced and contains nothing resembling a BLP violation. Given your recent involvement in several BLPN issues, I thought I would ask for your opinion should you have the time and inclination. Thanks in advance.

If you have the time, I'd appreciate your thoughts. Keepcalmandcarryon (talk) 20:23, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

If you're around, I found an editor had nominated this for GA status, but really needs some colour - figure it as a dry run for clozapine one day. I am reviewing it but am veering into fleshing it out from experience and trying to give the article some shape. what the hell :) - Anyway, all input appreciated :) Casliber (talk · contribs) 14:17, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Well, I have been needing some encouragement to bring me out of retirement, so to speak... What the hell indeed :) I'll have a look over the next few days, see what I can add... Fvasconcellos (t·c) 22:22, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Gol victim list RfC

Hi Fvasconcellos, in case it's not on your watch list, there is an RfC for the Gol hidden victim list. Your comments would be appreciated. Crum375 (talk) 03:40, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, interesting. I'll have a look. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 13:42, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Welcome back!

130 edits last month and 33 edits since 1 August – I think a welcome back cookie is justified. And three cheers, of course! --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 20:45, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

I wouldn't do that. You know what happens when you give a Fvasconcellos a cookie, right?  Ed (talkmajestic titan) 04:16, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Why, nothing—as long as you keep them coming, that is. Otherwise I'll sink your battleship. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 22:29, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Medrogestone DYK nomination

Hi. I've nominated Medrogestone, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article here, where you can improve it if you see fit. ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 10:23, 15 August 2010 (UTC) (By the way, I'm not exactly happy with the hook. Maybe you've got a better idea.)

Hello! Your submission of Medrogestone at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! EdChem (talk) 11:06, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

DYK for Medrogestone

The DYK project (nominate) 06:02, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,

I contact you to request mediation with the user User:AlexCovarrubias, I make a change in the Latin America article citing references that verify the changes. But the user User:AlexCovarrubias reverts my edition, wanting to have another version with an outdated reference and not prior to that I provide.

You can see the same thing in the edit history. This topic was much discussed in the Spanish Wikipedia, being correct these references.

Thanks you! --Maxpana3 (talk) 18:53, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi there. I don't think I should be involved in this as an informal mediator, as it could easily lead to accusations of a conflict of interest (I live in São Paulo). However, I do see a problem with the sources, and I'll head on over to the Talk page to discuss this. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 21:02, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Warning on my talk page

The "warning" you left only on my talk page and the fact that:

  1. You're Brazilian
  2. You're from Sao Paulo
  3. You didn't warn user User:Maxpana3
  4. You didn't pay attention to the case, because Maxpana3 is the one that started an "edit war" without even discussing in the talk page

Only give me the sense that you're biased and already took a side in this. Therefore I think this is a matter of conflict of interest. I was very dissapointed to see that you actually payed attention only to Maxpana when he came the other day to ask for help. I guess he did it because you're also Brazilian, again, falling in the concept of conflict of interest. Thanks. AlexCovarrubias ( Talk? ) 14:42, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Oh, I have already told the other user that the list considered the metropolitan area. He never listened. Now I have left a note in his talk page. I hope he guides himself now by the rules of Wikipedia, because he's going around several Latin American articles deleting information he doesn't like. AlexCovarrubias ( Talk? ) 14:44, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, yes, of course—how unexpected :) Please take the time to read the thread above, in which I state "I don't think I should be involved in this...as it could easily lead to accusations of a conflict of interest". Please take this matter to Talk:Latin America—I have no dog in this fight and intend to take no further action. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 14:51, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
I don't think you're using the appropiate tone to address this issue. You're being sarcastical and thus unprofessional as an administrator. You replied in my talk page saying that "it takes two to start an edit war" and the fact that you only warned me, clearly show favoritism.
As a matter of fact I would say that it takes two to fuel an edit war, but it takes one to start it, and the starter here was the other party, introducing what might be considered controversial changes (and easily proved boosterism) without discussing nor having the will to do it. Thanks. AlexCovarrubias ( Talk? ) 15:02, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
I apologize if I came across as sarcastic. I meant to be humorous, not sarcastic—I am well aware that sarcasm is really helpful (again, a joke). Humor, on the other hand, is often an excellent way to defuse loaded situations. If it backfired, I apologize again.
I respectfully disagree that it takes one to start an edit war—this particular issue, for instance, could easily have been addressed by following WP:BRD and further attempts to engage in discussion. I am glad to see that you have started a thread over at the article Talk page; let's see whether Maxpana chooses to respond or simply revert again.
For the record: (a) I have asked for the input of an uninvolved administrator and (b) I happen to agree with you. My only issue is with the reliability of Mongabay.com. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 15:09, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
I appreciate very much your reply and I of course respectfully accept your apologies. I am just frustrated to see that I was the only one that was warned for an issue that I consider I didn't start. AlexCovarrubias ( Talk? ) 15:12, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

The article Bambuterol has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced for nearly 4 years, fails WP:V

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Stifle (talk) 11:33, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for letting me know. I'll add some references to the article later today—should be fairly straightforward. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 11:57, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Pedro II of Brazil

Hi! Thank you very much for taking a look in the Marquis of Paranpa's article and fixing all those issues. It was very kind of you to do that.

I'm planning to nominate Pedro II of Brazil after it passes the nomination to Good article. Would you be interested on improving it, too? --Lecen (talk) 22:13, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Sure. Let me know when it's ready :) Best, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 02:30, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
Hey, I'm back! I was wondering if you would be interested in reviewing Pedro II of Brazil and approve its nomination to good article category (See: Talk:Pedro II of Brazil/GA1). Regards, --Lecen (talk) 11:50, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
Sure! I'll be quite busy over the next few days, but I'll try to have a look. Best, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 14:29, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
Why it is a bad idea? --Lecen (talk) 03:31, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
Well, first of all, this sort of compositing is, in a way, "deceiving" the viewer/reader. Besides, the end result is never quite accurate and is rarely aesthetically pleasing. Many readers and editors (myself included) also feel it is disrespectful of the subject and artist of the original works. In the past, even flipping a portrait or colorizing a black-and-white photo have led to significant debate and argument. This is very different from restoring and old or damaged image to what is believed to have been its original appearance, of course. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 04:25, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
Hello! I'm going to answer you in here, if you don't mind. 1# No mention of his acclamation in 1831? You could change "Left behind, Prince Imperial Pedro became Dom Pedro II, Constitutional Emperor and Perpetual Defender of Brazil" to "Left behind, Prince Imperial Pedro was acclaimed Dom Pedro II, Constitutional Emperor and Perpetual Defender of Brazil". 2# What sort of employee? A valet? A butler? A member of the bodyguard? That's a good question. He was certainly a free man. Historians simply call him an "all purpose man" in the Palace. Pedro I considered Rafael his "homem de confiança" (man of trust). Pedro II used him - as Rafael grew older (he was born in 1790) - more as a companion than a servant. 3# I realize you are trying to give a sense of just how restrictive and "unchildlike" his early life was, but this strikes me as excessively trivial. And you're right on both accounts. Having become an orphan of both father and mother at a young age, living in constant fear and manipulated by political factions, and having no time to be simply be a "child" but a "Emperor-to-be" affected him and are responsible to his character as an adult, that is, the man who was devoted to his office as "father of the nation" but at the same time hated not having ever the opportunity to live a normal life. 4# "A bill was promulgated on 4 September 1850..." The article deliberately does not mention other historical figures far more important than Eusébio de Queirós such as Honório Carneiro Leão, Marquis of Paraná, José Paranhos, Viscount of Rio Branco and Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias. Lack of space and focus is the main issue. That is why I created all those sub-articles on Pedro II's lifecycle that can expand the subject. Cheers, --Lecen (talk) 15:19, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Medrogestone DYK

Thanks for addressing the issue with medrogestone (whatever it was). I was away and only saw the message on my talk page after the article had appeared on the Main Page. --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 18:04, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome :) It was nothing much, just some citation issues. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 21:31, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

thank you for template mods

I want to thank you directly (because I have not yet done so) for editing and re-shaping the Template:Disability box as you have done. It is indeed so much better than the original dimensions, and Wikipedia needs more editors like you-- positive people who try to work with others to make something new the best it can possibly be, rather than reverting stuff out of ignorance, antagonism, or both. Your attitude and actions are very much appreciated and I look forward to doing more work and engaging in more discussion over at WikiProject:Disability. All the best to you! Kikodawgzzz (talk) 09:59, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome, and thank you! But please don't readd the template to those pages from which it was removed. Let's create a horizontal footer box first. Best, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 13:19, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

Heads up

Just to let you know that in this edit you effectively erased the link to a nominated DYK article Bombings in Mogadishu, which was fixed already on the main page. Take care. Materialscientist (talk) 07:05, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

I have nominated Down syndrome for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. Hi Fv. I noticed there was a comment at File talk:Vincristine.svg regarding this image that you created. I agree with this editor that there is an error in the chemical structure. Can you please take a look? Thanks. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:41, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

It also looks like File:Vinblastine.svg has a similar error. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:43, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Hi, Ed, thanks for letting me know. I'll fix them ASAP. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 17:55, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Um. The C2 of the indole at the centre is lacking stereochemistry (the H should point upwards if I'm not mistaken). Also, is there a reason why the top left ethylen bridge is pointing upwards? Cheers, ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 09:04, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
Indeed it is! Will get that back in. As for the ethylene bridge, I agree it's unnecessary (and a bit illogical), but that's how it was displayed in my original source—which I can't find now. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 19:52, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Hey Fv, would you please comment on that? IMPO rotating a picture by 90° makes it qualified for deletion. Cheers, --Yikrazuul (talk) 20:32, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Policy on Classification by Ethnicity, Gender, Religion and Sexuality

Hi, I have a problem with the article White Argentine. In the article I mentioned many people who are Argentine by birth and by option (they immigrated when they were children and stayed in Argetnina until their death, or they are now living there). All those people mentioned in the article are perfectly Caucasian by phenotype, and all have European/Middle Eastern ancestry. To see the names, check this older version of the article, for they are now removed. This is because some users appeared criticizing the article and alleging that mentioning all those persons without a source that explicitly define them as "White Argentine/Argentinian" was a breach to Wikipedia's BLP policy. Is that true? Because I read the article of WP policy on categorization by ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality, and the topic "Race" is still under dispute. Besides, one of the users that criticizes the article is also involved in the proposal/discussion/RfC of the policy itself. If the matter isn't still resolved, can they apply a rule that it is not fully valid yet? If I provide sources that every living Argentine mentioned in the article is of predominantly European ancestry, isn't that enough to define him/her as White? Please, help me clarify this doubt.--Pablozeta (talk) 12:29, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
