Wikipedia:WikiProject Punk music[edit]

Whats up? Hi, I'm trying to gather some more interest and support for the Wikipedia:WikiProject Punk music. Please check out the topics and lets get our WikiProject to function better. Recently, I've taken an interest in the Wikipedia:WikiProject hip hop and I consider that WikiProject to be better developed. I am now writing to usernames on the hiphopWP who might be interested in helping with the punkmusicWP. Hopefully we can all work together to improve articles relating to punk as has been done well with hip hop. Finally, I am trying to gather support and opinions concerning the punk house article and specifically the Theta Beta Potata article which is currently in AfD (x2) at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Theta Beta Potata (second nomination). Yuna Ito[edit]

You reverted some valid changes to this singer. The article says that she is "was born [...] in Los Angeles and is a citizen of the United States." Thus, she is American, not Japanese. Her name is "Yuna Ito", not 伊藤由奈. There is no cause for the nihongo template. The article says that she is part Korean. Why not include her Korean name 이토 유나 as well? Of course there is no need for that either. As established, she is American, so calling her a "Japanese pop singer" does not make any sense either. She is an American pop singer active in Japan. Also, you call her "bilingual". In what languages? English, Japanese, Korean, something else? Her Japanese has certainly improved a lot since she first debuted when she needed an interpreter in interviews. However, that does not make her bilingual (again, still ambiguous). For example, look at another US citizen: George W. Bush. He is known as ジョージ・ウォーカー・ブッシュ in Japanese. In Korean he is known as 조지 부시. Should that be added to his English article? Why? It is not his real name of course. Yuna Ito is a US citizen. Her real name, as born in the US, can not be in Japanese (伊藤由奈). Your changes do not make sense and appear to be lack POV. Is she American or Japanese? Is her name Yuna Ito or 伊藤由奈 (Itō Yuna; in which case the article should be moved to Yuna Itō). What is she bilingual in? Evidence? These are all valid points. 1. I think you're misinterpreting my edit. "Japanese pop singer" = singer who sings Japanese pop music.

2. Why is having her name in Kanji such a big problem? That's how it's written in Japanese and is a part of her Japanese heritage.

3. As for her bilingual ability, yes, I suppose that should be clarified to be that she is bilingual in English and Japanese.

4. Sign your edits, please.

If she is American, as the article states, then it is impossible for her real name in kanji. You can not register non latin spelling in the US. 伊藤由奈 is simply not her real name. It adds nothing to the article. If you insist on adding how her name is rendered in Japanese, then why stop there? How about adding her Korean name as well? (That is part of her "heritage" as well.) Or her name in Thai? Or in Cyrillic? Or Hebrew? Or Arabic? Or Devanagari? Or Bengali? Or Gurmukhi? Or Gujarati? Or Oriya? Or Kannada? (etc...) My main problem with adding 伊藤由奈 is that it should be rendered as Itō Yuna (or Yuna Itō) with a macron. However, that is not done precisely because she is American and it is not her real name. And yet you insist on listing the Japanese spelling as well, while using the American spelling. Each contradict each other. Looking at her (Japanese) CDs, they all use the spelling "Yuna Ito". Of course that is her name. Anything else is just not correct. The current rendition is an improvement, but you have not made a case for including the Japanese spelling of her name. I'm all for adding a Korean spelling of her name in Hangul if it's commonly used. The macron spelling is simply to accompany the kanji.

The kanji for her name is in fact being used... check the official Sony artist website:

No it is not. It is not her real name, period. It is impossible for her to have an official name in kanji. Guess what? Another American, George Bush, is officially known in Japan as ジョージ・ブッシュ. Should that be added to his English article? No, because it is not his real name. If you insist on using the kanji, then the romanization must be Itō (consistent throughout the whole article). Of course her own CDs use "Yuna Ito", not any kanji. That should be "official enough" too. Of course in the end, however the music companies decide to write her name is a stage name. So, do you want an article about the real person named Yuna Ito? Or about a singer named 伊藤由奈 (Yuna Itō as opposed to Yuna Ito)? Will it be her real name (Yuna Ito) or her stage name (伊藤由奈 / Yuna Itō)? Her real, official name is clear. It's even used on her CDs, which the article has pictures of. George Bush is a poor example because last time I checked, he has pretty much zero Japanese heritage. His family name probably has been spelled "Bush" for the better part of several centuries. "Ito" is an obvious romanization of the Japanese surname "伊藤", and the kanji that exists for that last name predates the romanization. I don't see there being a huge problem with having her official name being listed as "Yuna Ito" AND mentioning that the use of "伊藤由奈" for her name, since in Japan it represents a "true spelling" of her name and its official use by her record company. Perhaps a more descriptive name section similar to the | name section in the Utada Hikaru article would be useful for the Yuna Ito article. And since you seem so keen on emphasizing Yuna Ito's American identity: having the mention in the article that her name is frequently written as "伊藤由奈" doesn't detract anything from her American identity since it's already clear from the content of the article that she was born in the US and is a US citizen. --Gar2chan 07:34, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
