Sieges of Gibraltar

Hey there Gibmetal,

I was actually planning on doing the 1309 article. Will look at some of the others too and see if I cant knock some of them out, thanks for the request!

--ClarkSui (talk)

Hi Again, So the 1309 article is up, mostly translated from the Spanish wiki. Could probably use some better photos and some in line citations. Also noticed the Catalan article was pretty good, worth taking a look at. Will keep working at it.

Best, --ClarkSui (talk)

Hi Gibmetal,

So the page on the 1309 siege is looking pretty solid. Was wondering if you had any personal photos of any of the locations pertinent to this siege (not actually sure if there are still ruins) as you live there. Might be good to throw in a picture of two. They could also be used in future siege articles.

Best, --ClarkSui (talk)

Hey, Didnt find that picture before when I was looking, it definitely works. No worries, good luck with your new Gibraltarwiki. Best, Clark

Gibraltarpedia

I have written a short article on your interesting Gibraltarpedia initiative based on a couple of press reports. Maybe you could look it through for factual accuracy. If you wish to add a box similar to that for the Monmouthpedia article, please go ahead. You could perhaps also add the project logo. I am rather surprised that other editors have not signed up for the project. I was wondering whether this could be because you are placing too much emphasis on the local population. If you were to extend participation to Wikipedians at large, you might be able to attract more interest. Let me know if I can be of any assistance. --Ipigott (talk) 21:11, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Local emphasis .... can you give a hand with Jebel Musa or start an article of something on Spanish territory?Victuallers (talk) 08:20, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
Hello. I would like to contribute translation article into Catalan. Congratulations for starting this wikiproject.--Davidpar (talk) 21:50, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
Brilliant to see all this - more interest will come I hope. The Gibraltarpedia article is great - it took us months to get a "monmouthpedia" article. Obviously all three of us need to avoid editting directly to avoid COI. Very good new is that we have some interest from arabic wikipedians and from the "Catalan Army"! You may have noticed that we added an arabic translation to the blog and a translation of the project page is imminent. I have an idea what is going to be wikiproject of the year next year. This is not a clone of Monmouthpedia - we do have some "wow" plans Victuallers(talk) 08:18, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
What articles do you recommend to translate? --Davidpar (talk) 09:56, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Great job starting this, especially if it includes Ceuta, Tangier and Algeciras as stated in the video. Naturally I am interested in helping contribute articles. I created a stub on the George V hospital yesterday. What I advise you to do is to create the most comprehensive list of Gibraltar related topics you can think of on the project page, the more articles you route out as missing the more chance somebody such as myself will start them. I eat humble pie, you did it5 years ago!. Can you help format the listed buildings I added to your list? Also started Bristol Hotel, Gibraltar and Grand Casemates Square. perhaps your library has some info about its history? Could you inquire? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:35, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Hotels and pubs were covered in Monmouthpedia. I think The Rock Hotel is clearly notable and I think probably a handful of restaurants too. Only thing is you insist that the articles must be start class so finding enough content might be difficult for them.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:13, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't think its inevitable they'd all remain as stubs, I think a handful such as the Rock Hotel and the House of Sacarello you might find enough about them. I think though you are right about most in that it would be difficult to find enough content to expand beyond stubs! I think its worth having a go for one or two. I think hotels and restaurants are a poorly neglected part of wikipedia and if the right type of sources can be found are encyclopedic. But I'm biased as I've written articles like Hotel Ritz Paris!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:19, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. Well I tend to think architecturally. Some hotels and restaurants such as the oldest etc of historical note should be considered encyclopedic I think as notable buildings which form the landscape and architectural pieces should be a big part of what the project is about as it was with Monmouthpedia to try to provide as detailed coverage of the cityscape as possible. And I would expect buildings such as the Rock Hotel and those bars you named to have a fair bit of coverage in old documents and books in the Gibraltar museum and library perhaps? Anyway I like your approach and will try to help you out. You've made a good start on a fair few articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:42, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Gibmetal. Yes, I've heard of the project. I find it quite interesting, particularly as I holidayed in Gibraltar back in 2003. Not so sure how I could contribute, though. Manxruler (talk) 17:47, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Yes, it's been a while. Nice place, Gibraltar, very enjoyable. I might go back someday, although right now I'm focussing on travels further north in Europe. As for my interests, I like history, war and ships. I'll see if there are some Norwegian Second World War shipwrecks or something like that in the Gibraltar area, maybe I'll write up an article on something like that sometime in the future, but I'm not really a collaborative project sort of contributor. I like informal collaboration better. Cheers. Manxruler (talk) 18:42, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

DYK nom for Gibraltarpedia

Just wondering whether there's something going on of which I'm not aware. The response to my most recent revision ofGibraltarpedia was disappointing to say the least. In addition to criticism of the actual hook, Drmies gave a general slap-down of all the references used for the article, indicating that they're not "really up to par" and they "are all very local and very internetty." What, in the name of God, does that even mean? Is there something going on in the politics of Wikipedia to which this Chicagoan isn't privy? Wikipedia's getting a little crazy. Just yesterday, I had to deal with a contributor who was obsessed with the fact that he and I had performed concurrent DYK reviews on the same article and apparently had nothing better to do than go off on me for quite a while. Anne (talk) 14:30, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

templates

Hey

Yes I take your points about the templates, the flora and fauna one wont work, I can't see another way of doing the botanic gardens one well. Yes the military history one is a problem as there is so much overlap with so many other things. Template:Fortifications of Gibraltar is a good idea, the main thing I worry about with all of this is discouraging people from writing about something that doesn't fit neatly into one of our categories. Algeciras

Hi, I understand Algeciras is part of Gibraltarpedia? I was wondering if you could help me translate the featured article from spanish into english? Started User:Gibmetal77/Algeciras. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:33, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Great, hey sorry if I added it to your user box before getting a reply. I just think its a valuable article and it is the native town of my guitar hero Paco de Lucia! Let me know when you are going to begin working on it and I'l follow suite. I have an intermediate level of Spanish but am far from fluent but should be able to help.. It will be quicker to google translate and then add the original Spanish underneath and then proof read, save typing a lot of it out. So you'll see the english and then spanish underneath each pragraph, just needs proofing then. We can do it in stages if you like. Let me know anyway. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:21, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Gibraltar Harbour

I've left a message for Victuallers, too, because I don't know what to do. I started writing lighthouse and mole articles for Gibraltar in July, with the idea of writing numerous articles related to the harbour and then putting it all together for one big harbour article. I started my draft on Gibraltar Harbour itself on July 27. Anyone writing an article related to the harbour would have seen the light red Gibraltar Harbour on all of the lists, indicating that it was being written. I don't want to scrap the article; I've put so much work into it. Anne (talk) 03:02, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the paragraph on the macaques! After getting shot down on our sources for Gibraltarpedia, which to this day I still don't understand, I have been even more strict about what I am willing to use as a source. Another example: I recently wrote my second article on a tree, Houston's Whitebeam. A very short film was made on the tree and its discovery. The DYK folks would not accept it as a source for a cute hook, and I ended up doing a more conventional hook. So, I was reluctant to insert a paragraph on the macques because I wasn't convinced the sources I found would pass muster. Hopefully, the ones you used will and then, perhaps, I can actually incorporate it into a fun hook! Anne (talk) 18:16, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Secret

O.K. What's your secret? I normally don't have any trouble with maps. But the last two times that I tried to do a map, each time with an infobox monument, American War Memorial, Gibraltar and Gibraltar War Memorial, I bombed out. I even did both types of coordinates, in a template and out. I wrote map captions/text. Usually, all I have to do at that point is just type Gibraltar into the map type or map image and I'm done. Instead, both times there was garbled red type below the map image and it was unusable. So, both times I had to delete the map image and left everything else. I looked at both infoboxes and nothing looks different than when I did it. What am I doing wrong? Anne (talk) 21:36, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

A little heritage scandal

So, I decide it's time to head on back toward Gibraltar Harbour, and do some work on Rosia Bay and help you with King's Bastion. I start again with research on Rosia Bay, because I hadn't found that much the first time a few weeks ago. And that's when I found out about the Rosia Water Tanks. What a controversy! And it led to resignation of at least two members of Gibraltar Heritage Trust, including the chairman. What I found so ironic was that after the huge rush to demolish the tanks, the project went belly up and the government had to repossess! Anne (talk) 19:45, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

New article

This is upsetting. Someone is completely redoing my article and chopping it up into all these little sections. It looks like hell. Anne (talk) 14:34, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

I am really getting angry. I submitted this article for DYK. It looks like crap now. There are sentences that have been thrown in with no references. What, now I'm responsible for finding references for material that someone else inserted willy-nilly? There are lots of little sections with little paragraphs. That editor even eliminated my link to Victualling Yard. I'm pissed. I spent a lot of time on that article. Anne (talk) 14:41, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
I've never hit the "undo" tab before. Can I go ahead and click the undo tabs right down the line on my article for his changes? He's taken my paragraphs and completely resorted them, so now it even looks like the sentences that I wrote are unsourced. Anne (talk) 14:54, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Politics

This is so disappointing. The DYK editors have pulled ALL of my articles from DYK, including one that was literally on the main page at the time. That Synagogues of Gibraltar article, that I so carefully wrote and sourced, has now been slapped with a banner that suggests that it has crappy references. I spent an hour last night and another this morning reading up on the controversy. I was completely clueless until yesterday that anything was going on. I didn't even know anything about Gibraltarpedia prizes. I just did it because I enjoy competition. I naively thought that the main point of Wikipedia competitions was to increase the amount of encyclopedic content on Wikipedia and the main point of DYK was to improve the quality of articles. I have to go make breakfast for my children. I've quit DYK. Anne (talk) 11:53, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Flat Bastion

I'm confused. Why do you say that the magazine is at the northern limit of Flat Bastion? Also, you made a note in the edits about "barracks are further north along Flat Bastion Road." Are you referring to the Flat Bastion Barracks or the St. Jago's Barracks? Either way, it looks like I have to go back and start staring at maps again. Too bad they're mostly unlabeled.Anne (talk) 22:13, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Also, on the opposite side of the Charles V Wall, what is the triangular building with the greenish-blue roof? And, last, for now, are the Flat Bastion Barracks north of Charles V Wall, on the right (east) side? Anne (talk) 22:46, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

New and Improved Articles of GibraltarpediaA

Dear Gibmetal77, we in Finland have created quite a few "New and Improved Articles". You can see there are more of those than what we claim points for, because some of the most active contributorss can't be bothered to collect personal points, and also because we edit articles together, thus nobody can claim the points to himself/herself. My two questions are: 1) do we list sub-stubs which have less than 100 words of prose ? and 2) what about the articles from list of Gibraltar botanical gardens ?fi:Valkoraimikki is an example of both. (Maybe I should also say, that it seems the fi:Gibraltar will soon be FA, it is already a GA.) Best regards, --Tappinen (talk) 04:40, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Flat Bastion

Good Morning. I'm still going back and working intermittently on the Flat Bastion. Question: Do you know the name of the gate at the Charles V Wall at the level of the Flat Bastion? The 1908 OS map and current google maps show that there is a gate at that north end, while at the south end, it appears that a portion of Flat Bastion wall was just taken down. Thank you. P.S. The brouhaha is still going on at Flat Bastion Road. I really just want to rewrite the whole thing from scratch, but I have this feeling that I'm going to be wasting my time. It's becomevicious. Nuns or Nuns' or Nun's Well

I was contemplating doing an article on this topic. However, I noticed that there was a decent size Nun's Well section in theEuropa Point article and I decided not to do an article. Just for the heck of it though, I clicked on the one and only reference for Europa Point, here. The whole thing's been plagiarized! It's identical, word for word! How do we handle this? It looks like it was done by someone named Toromedia. What's the correct protocol? I don't want this to go public given the Gibraltarpedia controversy. Do we delete the section? Notify the contributor? Now I'm thinking that I should write an article. Any thoughts? Anne (talk) 20:59, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Nun's Well

I would appreciate your interpretation of this sentence: "Nuns' Well is acknowledged by consensus to be the only remaining construction for water storage in Gibraltar." It is the first sentence in anewspaper article. I'm not sure of the meaning. There must be other water reservoirs in Gibraltar. Does it refer to old reservoirs? Even in the same article, a caption reads: ""All the reservoirs remain functional ..." Any thoughts? Thank you. Anne (talk) 18:47, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Islamic Gibraltar

Take a look at User:Prioryman/Islamic Gibraltar - any thoughts before I put it into article space?

I'd really like to include a picture of the Moorish baths at the Gibraltar Museum but I'm afraid the pictures we have currently aren't up to scratch. Is there any chance that the museum might be able to provide a decent photo?Prioryman (talk) 10:52, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Trafalgar Cemetery challenge

This Sunday is the Battle of Trafalgar commemoration day - there will be an annual commemoration event in Trafalgar Cemetery. It would be great if we could get a 5x expansion done in time for the article to be ready for DYK for that day. Could you see what you can do with it? Also, is there any chance you might be able to take some photos of the event?Prioryman (talk) 23:36, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Moorish Gibraltar

Thanks very much for your help with Moorish Gibraltar, and thanks for your corrections! I feel a bit frustrated about the "Granada Gate", I spent some time (and shoe leather!) trying to find it. I guess I either misread my walking guide or the author got it wrong. By the way, just one thing about formatting; I've noticed that you tend to put block quotations in italics. This is generally deprecated (and isn't required by the Manual of Style), as it makes text more difficult to read. See Wikipedia:MOS#Block_quotations.

One other thing of note - there is a push going on by Jayen466 to overturn the earlier agreement on DYK for handling Gibraltar-related DYK nominations, and to implement a moratorium, of possibly up to a year's length. You might have a view on this, as it may affect articles you've contributed to (including mine). See Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Time-sensitive DYK nomination. Hi

Hi Gibmetal77, how are you doing? :-)))

I'm not really much active. I'm definitely trying to come off wikipedia, so I don't think I'll work in the project much more. On the other hand, I've followed somehow your Gibraltarpedia efforts. They seem nice, but with some sides not really clear, so I prefer not to work in this area any more (on the other hand, could you ask for the merging of the histories ofUser:Ecemaml/Nursery/Gibraltar Museum and Gibraltar Museum... my contributions in the latter are lost as no mention of where the first review of the article came from). Best regards and sorry for not being much helpful... I'm not really at ease with the project --Ecemaml (talk) 11:13, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Gibmetal, I don't think there kindof attitudes will help Gibraltarpedia, at least in the Spanish Wikipedia. I can assume that a massive advertisement of the project as it's beendone by Al Lemos was in good faith, but that kind of uncivil answers only discredits the whole project (of course I'm not meaning to warn anyone, but as it seems that the project is "teaching" good wikipedia practices, one of them is assume good faith, complain to the local regulation of wikepedias and be civil). Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 07:51, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

De nada, hombre, a mandar :-)

Thinking it again, I've decided to start a lengthy article that could be suitable to become a featured article. However, my English skills make it hard to do, so I've decided to write it in Spanish and try to translate it afterwards. As I cannot write in the Spanish wikipedia, I'll do it in User:Ecemaml/Nursery/Spanish Civil War in Gibraltar ‎ and once finished in Spanish, start to translate it into English. Of course that your help would be needed to do a proper translation. Hope it help. Hasta luego --Ecemaml (talk) 14:50, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Great addition of the coords - I had thought that might be useful! Nice to see your Rock Hotel article. The training of the ICT teachers seems to have gone very well. Conversion template

Who do I notify that the conversion template is not working correctly? I realized it when I starting working on Spur Battery last night. Example: 344 metres (1,129 ft) and 1,130 feet (340 m). I don't know whether the bug is recent, because I never tested it before last night. Anne (talk) 12:49, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Fortifications of Gibraltar

I just thought I'd let you know that I'm planning to start a piece on the Fortifications of Gibraltar – they were really my main focus of interest when I visited, with Clive Finlayson's eponymous book serving as a guide. Hopefully I won't be treading on any toes as the article is still a red link! I may need to ask you to take a few photos along the way so be warned. ;-) Prioryman (talk) 00:18, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Breakneck Battery

Good morning. I just moved Breakneck Battery to article space. However, I really had to work just to make it start class. So far, it's been the battery for which it was the most difficult to retrieve information. I'm assuming that it's due to the fact that it's still on MoD property. If you have any other suggestions for references that I could use, I would appreciate it. Anne (talk) 15:43, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Fortifications of Gibraltar

Have you and Prioryman decided yet on whose user page or sandbox the fortifications article will reside? I'm assuming that it will be you since you've had a nice draft outline for a while. If it's OK with you, I'm going to write a small summary each day of one of the articles that I've written and then plug it into your big article. Once I catch up, then I'll automatically generate a little summary every time I write a new article and add it to yours. Your article is a big undertaking, but as a group I think we can handle it! Please just don't take my word for it, have a look at what he and Imalbornoz were doing. They added a link that was a clear copyvio, removed quotes claiming it was "British POV" by a Governor appointed by the Queen (Melissa R. Signal gun

Hello! Do you know what a signal gun is? I'm writing articles User:ACP2011/Middle Hill Battery and User:ACP2011/Middle Hill, Gibraltar. One of my sources is the DiscoverGibraltar site. On the page for Middle Hill Battery, it indicates: "In 1727 Middle Hill Battery had a Signal gun and by 1859 there was still only one gun ..." Is it possible that the word is single instead of signal? Thank you. Anne (talk) 02:30, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Opinion requested

Good afternoon-Good Evening your time. I'd like your opinion on the Operation Tracer, Gibraltar article that I'm writing. I'm considering submitting it to DYK, despite all the amped-up shenanigans this week, with photo and article deletion threats. There is an Operation Tracer section in a military history article, so my understanding is that I would have to do a 5x expansion. I'm terrible at figuring out article lengths, but I'm guessing I'm somewhere around a 3x expansion, so I won't be sending it to article space before tomorrow. However, before I send it, I'd like your opinion on the very last paragraph. Everyone is so uptight and insisting that there be no commercial aspect, so I've largely been restricting myself to historical articles. However, I thought that it was very appropriate to mention that a movie about Operation Tracer is planned. I didn't know about it when I started my research, but I really believe that it belongs in the article. I've kept the paragraph short and as neutral as possible. I'd appreciate feedback when you have a chance. Thank you. We're supposed to be getting our first snowstorm today. Brrrr!!! It was 70 degrees yesterday and the day before, and the temperature plummeted overnight! Anne (talk) 21:14, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Gibraltar Heritage Journal

Hi Gibmetal77, I was wondering if you know any means to access old issues of the Gibraltar Heritage Journal. I'm reading an interesting book that deals with the first half of the 20th century in Gibraltar and it mentions two articles by Dennis Beiso that were published in the Gibraltar Heritage Journal. Unfortunately, there seems to be no ways to access them in electronic format. Do you know of any way to access specific articles (I can provide details if needed)? Best regards--Ecemaml (talk) 13:53, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Gibmetal, the book I'm reading is this one. A really interesting work that provides a "revisionist" view of many statements that have been given for granted. He focuses a lot in the "class struggle" within Gibraltar, remarking for example how the support that the TGWU and the working class in general gave to the Spanish Republicans during the Civil War was in sharp contrast with the attitudes by the Gibraltarian moneyed class and the military and religious authorities (in that sense, it's really remarkable the mention about John Mackintosh and Lionel Imossi sending a convoy of foodstuff to Madrid once it was taken by Franco). It also states that the evacuation was not the start of the process of "anglization" of the Gibraltar population, but the hounding by the Franco dictatorship; that the evacuation followed the class divide (as really only the working class was left in the hands of the British military authorities, while the moneyed class used their own means to go to Spain, Tangier or Madeira, not having to wait for the repatriation schemas to return to the Rock); or that the initial support to the AACR was far from unamimous, as the moneyed class resisted and opposed to further political reforms. I'm not doing a linear reading but picking up the chapters I'm most interested in, but anyway, it's a really must-to-read book.
What I'm looking for are the following articles by Dennis Beiso:
  • "The Social Impact of the Spanish Civil War in Gibraltar", Gibraltar Heritage Journal, no. 7 (2000)
I'd be also interested in other articles by the same author:
  • "The José Luis Díez Incident", Gibraltar Heritage Journal, no. 10 (2003)
Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 09:14, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

I can't find much either. I was trying to get material for an overhaul to Grand Casemates Gates after a DYK reviewer quite unreasonably said that the menu of a local restaurant did not count as a reliable independent source. Well, maybe the menu is not entirely independent. What I want and could not find is what kind of stone, foundations, mortar, how wide, high, long etc. - a physical description. I can't find anything. It must exist. Frustrating. Aymatth2 (talk) 15:24, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
