Have a good new year DH. Don't feel to upset about your RFA, you got 76 supports which is a lot more than what the average RFA does, and in the end you were only about 8% off the area that RFAs can pass on. This means your help is wanted, needed, and appreciated even if you don't get the tools. happy Mango season[edit]

'TIS MANGO SEASON....
Have a shlice of mango cheek...well, I am up to my armpits in the things. Yuletide means lots and lots of mangos, as well as turkey and ham and ice-cream and pressies. Were on special so I bought 3 crates for AU$20 and now I have both crispers in the refrigerator full and even with everyone eating two of the ##$@& things every mealtime... Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Elonka 3[edit]

Thank you for your support in my RfA. It was definitely a dramatic debate, that landed on WP:100! I paid close attention to everything that was said, and, where possible, I will try to incorporate the (constructive) criticism towards being a better administrator. I'm taking things slowly for now, partially because of the holidays and all the off-wiki distractions. :) I'm also working my way through the Wikipedia:New admin school and double-checking the relevant policies, and will gradually phase into the use of the new tools. My main goals are to help out with various backlogs, but I also fully intend to keep on writing articles, as there are several more that I definitely want to get to WP:FA status! I Don't Remember definitely has the best chance of FA (courtesy of those five nineMSN videos that I still can't watch...). Powderfinger[edit]

I was thinking, even though the link to Portal:Powderfinger is supplied in the {{Powderfinger}} template, wouldn't it be better if in addition to the template link, add {{Portal|Powderfinger}} under an article's See also section? It seems like a better choice even though it's blatantly redundant. Most of the PF articles would have {{Portal|Music of Australia}} in the see also section - that's why I put the other one in {{Powderfinger}} (2 portal templates together look ugly as Daniel hell). Hi DHMO. Would you be able to cast your eyes over the Brisbane bid once more (meta:Wikimania 2009/Bids/Brisbane), and give me your thoughts. Basically, your penalty for showing interest in the first place is that I'm going to continually bug you for feedback =).

I've been talking to the Council, and I'm reasonably confident that we might be able to get a commitment for a sizable grant (five-figure) from them should we win the bid; must better than I expected to do to be honest. I'm not going to put anything on the bid page until I get that commitment though, hopefully in the next week or so.

GA issue[edit]

Hello, I thought to come to you for advice on a recently passed Good Article, as you have experience in reviewing good articles on a variety of subjects. As I was looking over Kuala Lumpur for minor fixes, I noticed a few problems with the article. Then I noticed a few more and on a full read-through, more yet.

I do not wish to create ill feelings by kicking up a fuss on the talk page or unilaterally pursuing a reassessment. I am not a reviewer myself and the chance of a mistake on my part is certainly real. Perhaps I am being overly critical since I also make minor edits on Featured Articles, a task which may have inflated my expectations for Good Articles. But I don't think so. There are fundamental content problems in the article, to the point where I ask if you could make time to look at Kuala Lumpur yourself. You would make an admirable check against unrealistic expectations.

Let me make clear that I do not think there is anything in the article which several detailed copyedit and sentence reworking sessions could not clear up (though more extensive than I can offer). The article is very well-cited and the content appears to meets all GA criteria other than "reasonably well written". However, I cannot see how the article passes criteria 1 in its present condition, especially beyond the first sections.

To be more specific, in addition to many awkwardly phrased sentences, there are a number of sentences which are grammatically incorrect. For example, here is a sampling of broken sentences found in a quick read-through:

  • The city has many places of worship catered for the multi-religious population.
  • The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) in Sentul West is one of the most established centre for the performing arts, notably theatre, music, and film screening, in the country.
  • Despite cities around Asia are suffering declining tourist arrivals, Kuala Lumpur tourist arrivals increased from 6,210,900 in 1997 to 10,221,600 in 2000, or 64.6% increase in tourist arrivals.
  • The Hong Kong office of Channel V International, an international music channel, relocate its programme production unit in Kuala Lumpur by appointing the local company Double Vision Sdn Bhd.
  • Despite efforts to promote usage of public transportation, utilisation rates are low as only 16 percent of the population uses public transportation in 2006.

Of course I can fix most of these examples myself, though I might have to guess at the wording intent on one or two. But the underlying content fault remains.

Should you have the time to look this over, I would appreciate your feedback, particularly if the fault is with my understanding of "reasonably well written". Would a suggestion on the talk page that the primary editor(s) invite one of the heavy-hitter copyeditors to help out with content issues suffice? I have no wish to unduly burden the hard-working editors who create quality articles, nor those who might have fallen a bit short of that goal. -- Michael Devore (talk) 04:38, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The issues there are some that would be picked up on (or should be) in a GA review, so in terms of quality you're fine. I think a note on the talk page, combined with you fixing any issues you have time to look at, would be the best way forward - GAR is backlogged and no fun. I don't have the time/patience to fully look at the article now (burned out by the reviewing I've been doing lately), but I would suggest that you start with a note on the talk page, and perhaps contact a few copyeditors yourself to try and help out. They were a band that was popular before the internet was, so there is not much about what happened between albums. Just about all information on the web is directed toward Layne Staley, and there are no books published on the band. For a wikitable, I generally leach off Spebi or Lincalinca. With the external links, per (my interpretation of) WP:EL only the first two are necessary; that's also what I'd say in a GA review. I was merely trying to point out the fact that the article does, in no way, assert its notability and that it was obvious it needs to be deleted. Editors with partial knowledge of the movie itself and half knowledge of the policies can obviously see it needs to go, which is supported by the current "delete" votes. If I wanted to be uncivil (which is, I assume, why you brought it up) the message would have read very differntly, but seeing how I have behaved with almost saint-like civility in much worse situations in the recent past, I can assure you I had no intention of attacking editors in this much calmer atmosphere. Ian Meckiff[edit]

Hi, had a look at the GA review. It is actually handy as you have picked up some of the jargon as an issue that I may have glossed over unthinkingly. This one in particular was a good pick up "Meckiff was not called in the 1960–61 Australian season, but his performances were ineffective as injuries restricted him" - how could he perform if he wasn't called in?" "Called" here means a no ball was called for throwing, not being called in. I wouldn't have picked that as ambiguous but it obviously is.

The article is comprehensive, at least on his cricket career. He is (in)famous for one thing and that is the manner of his exit from cricket, drummed out as a chucker.

Ray Williams[edit]

Thanks for your assistance with the Ray Williams article. I had previously reverted it a number of times, and then requested help at the Australian Wikipedians' Noticeboard, as it's a bit hard for one person to watch it 24 hours. It wouldn't surprise me if the wayward editor is Ray Williams himself. A Wiki article about oneself is like having a permanent resume in full public view on the net, and in this case, the resume lists him as being a criminal, which I'm sure he doesn't like. I understand that the subject of the article would prefer he had a nice Wiki page about himself. But after being in jail for his involvement in Australia's biggest financial collapse, he joins the dubious ranks of Alan Bond and Christopher Skase. Thanks or the cleanup, but now I'm officially confused, since the page above gives both {{Rescue}} and {{tl|Rescue}} tags for use. You say the first one won't work. Sorry for any possible confusion there. {{Rescue}} (which produces the template syntax, and a link to the template's page) is essentially the same as {{Rescue}}, except the latter doesn't have a link to the template's page as well. Ah, so. Damned caps! But the reason the redlink didn't throw me off is because I frankly didn't expect an internal link to show up as linked, without the tl template prefix. But I see it does if it's working, and not if not. Golly. These | wikimarkup things (what are they called?) are confusing, as they do completely different things if used in links (where they separate what shows in the text, from what's actually called in the link), than they do when used inside the double curly brackets. Outdent: I mean if you put {{help}} on your talk page, it does more than just insert some tag template-- rather it actively notifies somebody somewhere. Whereas a lot of other templates do insert a page into your page, which is the template page. There are a lot of other curly bracket things where you fill in spaces, and it goes to some other page and adds your name and creates a subject heading and all kinds of other stuff. Of mops and men[edit]

There are several reasons I've never run. A) I don't need admin tools for what I like to do. The only time I find it tempting is toward helping at DYK. B) I worry that if I had the tools I would be tempted to spend large amounts of time at AFD or ANI -- the great generators of the Wiki's negative energy -- and quickly become depressed. C) I'm generally only sure to be online in the evening for an hour or two, and sometimes miss even that. Some RFA participants oppose when questions are not answered rapidly. I've never had a week where I felt confident that I'd be adequately accessible. D) I worry about what happened to Gracenotes. Though I meant them constructively, I too have made critical comments of editors who seem to have long memories. So I was bored, so I got the proposal started, but I realised, it's a pretty small scope and really, we should include ATGD and its DVD in the topic, so maybe we should work towards vastly improving each of these articles (as ATGD tour article is like to qualify as a list, we probably need to put a LOT of work into it, to ensure it meets the FL criteria, but that would work to our advantage, since we'd then have three FCs and four GAs, a good ratio, I believe. Just as a side note, the FT criteria doesn't require the topic to contain a lot of articles, it requires it to contain all articles in the topic, if that makes any sense. The only relation that ATGD and Dream Days have is that they were both around the same time, roughly, but the topic is Dream Days and its singles, and that should be it. I do not like. Hope I did not bother you on this things. I do review articles but just the article itself. I do not review it against the cited sources. You know, I use computers in a cafe "with payments" because our computer does not have connection yet. So, what I usually do when reviewing articles is save it in a USB then review it in our house. It made the process easier using Microsoft Word. I usually spot errors. Go back to the reviewing thing, I want to review but there's a restriction. I see that you fight a lot of vandalism and that you're on right now as I type this. I'm seeking input from some vandal fighters outside my usual circle in order to get a fresh perspective:

When we revert vandalism by someone who already received a level 4 warning, any other warnings make it seem like, "Oh, we didn't really mean it when we said that was your last warning," like the parent who says, "This is the last time I'm going to tell you" five times before taking action. What about something like this?[4] Another big reason for suggesting this: So any admin responding to the AIV could see at a glance that the level 4 warning was for a violation earlier than the last one.

When a vandal keeps vandalizing the same article, I've seen admins make the mistake of thinking an edit after the warning was actually the edit for which they'd been warned, in which case the admin fails to block. If the AIV process consistently worked as smoothly and quickly as possible, nothing like this would be needed, but that's just not the case. Sometimes it takes a bit for the admin to research the case. In the meantime, the vandal just keeps vandalizing. This isn't just about the message we send the vandal. It's also about the message we send to any other users who might see all those pages where somebody got a "last" warning followed by several more warnings.

It might also prevent duplicate reporting of vandalism, which just adds overhead to an already busy process. I know I've certainly found myself sometimes preparing to report vandalism only to find the user was already blocked by the time I brought the information to AIV, especially with reports that are more complicated to explain. If I saw a tag like this, I could have moved on to something more useful.

I haven't been vandalfighting now (just saw it on my watchlist), but I do so occasionally. Anyways, I think that User:Doczilla/Template:Uw-vandalism4x is a good idea - although ideally, the best thing would be for admins just to check contribs/warnings better. Thanks again. It looks like it's going to remain a fairly even split with a slight majority favoring it. I have to present it on a wider scale but wanted feedback from a smaller group of people to make sure it seemed worthwhile to enough people. I understand the argument that some vandals will be spurred to vandalize more if told they've been reported, but heck, that happens when a lot of them get a final warning. Wiggles image tag[edit]

Di, I noticed that you removed the image tag from Talk:The Wiggles, and I replaced it. The article does need an image, as discussed on the talk page, because the infobox image, which is a group photo of The Wiggles, is out of date. Greg Page, a founding member, who had to leave the group in late 2006 due to illness, is in the image. There is no free image photo of The Wiggles with Sam Moran, Greg's replacement, but a call has gone out for one. I'd like the tag to remain, so that it remains on the Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of people list. Um, never mind! After some thought, I think I've come up with a better solution. Although I wish there was a better image in the infobox, I believe that it was a good solution. Eek - I forgot about Greg leaving. Sorry about that. Ideally, I would think that the infobox image should contain the new member, but if there’s no free alternative then I’d go with the image currently there, at least in the meantime. You might be able to temporarily justify a fair use image with the new member elsewhere in the article (if you can build a case against {{subst:rfu}}….good luck!), but not the infobox. I'm tempted to redirect you to WP:MUSICNN, but I'll take a look anyway! :) I think the assertion there is OK (not even borderline, I guess) - some Triple J, some newspapers, etc. It would be good if the refs could be formatted to note the publisher, this makes it easier to pick out the "notability asserting coverage" (blah!). Appearing on a notable record label is also mentioned on WP:MUSIC if I recall correctly. So yeah, it's notable; I've removed the tag.
