RFA[edit]

I am very sorry and sad about your RFA. You are well qualified, but apparently people don't view you as mature enough because of the past :(. I guess do good within the next few months and I will nominate you next :). Trevor "Tinkleheimer" Haworth 00:38, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am also sad and sorry. I regret opposing you, and causing lots of people to pile on. You may have slight judgement lapses on occasion, but you are fantastic editor, and a good friend. Happy new year - hopefully you'll pass in 2008 :) Majorly (talk) 00:42, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Very noble. Can you express again how your oppose caused pile-ons? Fuck. Just say sorry, and be over it. the_undertow talk 11:03, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to see you pull the plug. The RfA process is a bit brutal to say the least. Hope you keep contributing to Wikipedia in 2008. Happy New Year! Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 00:45, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I opposed you this time around but it's nothing personal, you're obviously a good and hard working editor and I'll support you next time if I can. Good luck, chin up. Nick mallory (talk) 03:04, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey![edit]

Keep your head up. Regards, Mercury 01:00, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's all right DHMO. Don't stop working your stuff here. We need you! bibliomaniac15 01:12, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just want to say I agree with the above. I saw your edit summary on the RfA and was a little worried. Please note that your work here is definitely appreciated. After all, everyone knows the fifth try is a charm ;). Honestly though, I suspect an overwhelming passing RfA awaits you some time in the near future. SorryGuy  Talk  02:07, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd endorse these sentiments. Clearly you are an excellent contributor to Wikipedia and the work that you do is very much appreciated. There still seems to be a worry from a significant minority about your temperament, but that is something you can work on. Let me know if you ever need any help, and accept my commiserations and good wishes, --John (talk) 03:41, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hang in there mate. You were unlucky that time but don't give up. You do great work here. Cheers, Sting_au Talk 04:14, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Worry not my man. Your time will come. Pedro :  Chat  22:21, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year, Dihydrogen Monoxide[edit]

Wishing you the best for 2008! Acalamari 04:24, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about your RfA, too: it's a shame you had to withdraw. Don't worry, I believe you'll be an admin one day here, and I'll support your RfA next time. I've supported all four of your RfAs, and I'll support a fifth. You're an excellent editor, and a great Wikipedian overall. Good luck DHMO. Acalamari 04:24, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, merry 2008! Sorry about your RfA. I supported this one to the end. But it's okay, because you're like a prolific writer now. You don't need admin bullshit distracting you from your work. <-- Silver lining. LaraLove 05:10, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't feel too downhearted mate; you had many more supporters than opposers, and you are a true asset to this encyclopedia. PLease, please hang around, and have a prosperous 2008. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 06:49, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have a good new year DH. Don't feel to upset about your RFA, you got 76 supports which is a lot more than what the average RFA does, and in the end you were only about 8% off the area that RFAs can pass on. This means your help is wanted, needed, and appreciated even if you don't get the tools. I decided to not participate in this RFA, for reasons stated on my talk page, but if you decide to run again in the near future I will very likely support. I will place the future RFA page on my watchlist so I don't miss it if you do go ahead. Good luck! Camaron1 | Chris (talk) 11:17, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd nom you next time around, if you want. Honestly, being an admin isn't all it's cracked up to be. Happy new year, and please stay with us. We really need you around here. :) Keilanatalk(recall) 21:08, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA for Matthew Charlton[edit]

Hi! I fixed the things you pointed out on that article's talk page. Thanks for reviewing it - we've been waiting a while. Littleteddy (talk) 10:54, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The nomination for the Music of Australia portal has been successful. Great job. And I would like to take this opportunity to say a rather large thank you, for all the confidence you have given me here on the wiki—with help at GAN, offering to do a co-nomination on my soon-to-be RFA and for supporting my successful request for a position on the featured portal directors seat. Thank you. I do hope one day everyone will see that you truly are a great! editor and your "dream" (using that term loosely probably :)) of becoming an administrator. Best regards, Rt. 16:40, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please archive Wikipedia:Peer review/Alice in Chains. Thank you, Burningclean [Speak the truth!] 18:55, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also could you review Chevelle (Wikipedia:Peer review/Chevelle). I would like to get as many reviews as possible so I can skip GA and go right to FA. Burningclean [Speak the truth!] 03:08, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please take a look at the above comment. This FAC is a pain in the arsenal, I just want it done. Please support! :P Burningclean [Speak the truth!] 05:28, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Maby it will finaly be over! 6 supports 2 ubjections of people who don't know what they are talking about. I will be the only member of WP:METAL with 2 featured band articles. If this one finally close soon I will submit Chevelle for FA. Would you please archive Wikipedia:Peer review/Chevelle for me? I tried with the AiC PR and I got confused. Thank you again. On a second note, I worked on Shadows Fall all day (in one day) and it is up for GAN, could you review? Burningclean [Speak the truth!] 05:55, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's me; who else? :P I could do the FAC work but give you credit, all I did was copyedit. You've done awesome work, just poke me when you need help. :) Sorry about your RfA, by the way. Don't let it get you down, you'll make a great admin soon enough. Keilanatalk(recall) 00:29, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My hap-hap-happiness![edit]

Yeah, I got bored with a name that was so similar to my own, and because it ends with an "a", peopl would often think I was a girl, which wasn't cool. Anyway, I hadn't watched that video in years, so that was strange really going into analysing it. --rm 'w avu 10:18, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your support in my RfA. It was definitely a dramatic debate, that landed on WP:100! I paid close attention to everything that was said, and, where possible, I will try to incorporate the (constructive) criticism towards being a better administrator. I'm taking things slowly for now, partially because of the holidays and all the off-wiki distractions. :) I'm also working my way through the Wikipedia:New admin school and double-checking the relevant policies, and will gradually phase into the use of the new tools. My main goals are to help out with various backlogs, but I also fully intend to keep on writing articles, as there are several more that I definitely want to get to WP:FA status! Well, you did offend me, and I was really disappointed for that. But I'll just pretend this has never happened. Please consider not go butting heads with opposers/complainers at RFAs. You're becoming more and more hostile. Anyway, I'll just forget this incident. *pours tea* Regards, Húsönd 03:00, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Crossed comments. I did consider blocking you as I was very upset (and for the record I don't easily get upset). Reporting to ANI is always a good thing when these situations happen, as you can have the feeling that you're doing something about it, without actually doing it. *pours more tea* Regards, Húsönd 03:04, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I had forgotten I’d tagged it; thanks for catching that. By all means, review away! If it helps at all, my only real concerns are the inadequate description of the defining feature (Norwegian loop) and the length of the article, given the abundance of information in the second reference (not sure whether you speak German). Ɛƚƈơƅƅơƚɑ talk 23:07, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't speak German, but I'll take your word for that. I've added a link to this diff, so the editors will be aware of what you said. Hopefully it'll help. Dihydrogen Monoxide 23:11, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Hey Giggy, thanks for the star. I don't know what it is about reconfirmation RFAs that makes some people in the community so upset. If people don't really like the process, well, I disagree but I can understand it. But I don't understand the people who say it's a waste of time. I think that's just totally incorrect. It's not a time consuming process at all!

Ah well, the joy of wiki ;) Don't let it get you discouraged. --JayHenry (talk) 02:44, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aah well...I totally agree with you here, but alas the community isn't as forgiving. I suppose the easiest way to avoide the suffrage that is project space discussion is to edit some more articles...I'll go do that :) Dihydrogen Monoxide 06:45, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Project space discussion is a bit like heroin. You know it's very bad from the moment it first enters your veins and ruins your blood pressure, but by then it's already impossible to stop. Some people eventually overdose; the rest of us are merely functioning addicts. --JayHenry (talk) 06:55, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody Sees for GA?[edit]

I figure, if we can get Nobody Sees up to GA and one of that, I Don't Remember and Lost and Running up to FA, we could then put up Dream Days as a featured topic? LAMB by Gwen Stefani got FTed, so I don't see why this couldn't be. What do you think? --rm 'w avu 11:06, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I Don't Remember definitely has the best chance of FA (courtesy of those five nineMSN videos that I still can't watch...). Although I'm not sure if it's a great idea to go for it *right now*, but some more expansion (progressively) would be good... Dihydrogen Monoxide 22:01, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Powderfinger[edit]

I was thinking, even though the link to Portal:Powderfinger is supplied in the {{Powderfinger}} template, wouldn't it be better if in addition to the template link, add {{Portal|Powderfinger}} under an article's See also section? It seems like a better choice even though it's blatantly redundant. And good work with Jon Coghill (beef lead slightly so I can use it in the portal :)) Cheers, Spebi 01:00, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the PF articles would have {{Portal|Music of Australia}} in the see also section - that's why I put the other one in {{Powderfinger}} (2 portal templates together look ugly as Daniel hell). And you're welcome to beef up JC's lead (what about Bernie?) Dihydrogen Monoxide 01:02, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Both works better, IMO. Will do, and I'll see what I can do with Bernie :) And then I need at least one more free picture of the band or something closely-related to them for Selected pictures. Spebi
I looked through Flickr the other day - all of the free-for-us-to-use Bernie images were from the one uploader, so in terms of variety there aint much out there :( Dihydrogen Monoxide 01:07, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Although, here's them at Splendour, if you like. Not the best photo though :( Dihydrogen Monoxide 01:08, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whoa, that's terrible! Eh, at least Bradii knows how to license photos properly. Jeanie took over 200 photos that night, if she took only a couple we would really be stuck. Oh well, I'll go digging later on today. Spebi 01:13, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, not portal quality, but you could probably slam it onto an article (somewhere) just for some variety. Dihydrogen Monoxide 01:17, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not much point really, you can't even see them, just their lighting and effects and the back of heads. Spebi 02:30, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That puts us back at square one, right? :S Dihydrogen Monoxide 02:33, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania '09[edit]

Hi DHMO. Would you be able to cast your eyes over the Brisbane bid once more (meta:Wikimania 2009/Bids/Brisbane), and give me your thoughts. Basically, your penalty for showing interest in the first place is that I'm going to continually bug you for feedback =).

I've been talking to the Council, and I'm reasonably confident that we might be able to get a commitment for a sizable grant (five-figure) from them should we win the bid; must better than I expected to do to be honest. I'm not going to put anything on the bid page until I get that commitment though, hopefully in the next week or so.

GA issue[edit]

Hello, I thought to come to you for advice on a recently passed Good Article, as you have experience in reviewing good articles on a variety of subjects. As I was looking over Kuala Lumpur for minor fixes, I noticed a few problems with the article. Then I noticed a few more and on a full read-through, more yet.

I do not wish to create ill feelings by kicking up a fuss on the talk page or unilaterally pursuing a reassessment. I am not a reviewer myself and the chance of a mistake on my part is certainly real. Perhaps I am being overly critical since I also make minor edits on Featured Articles, a task which may have inflated my expectations for Good Articles. But I don't think so. There are fundamental content problems in the article, to the point where I ask if you could make time to look at Kuala Lumpur yourself. You would make an admirable check against unrealistic expectations.

Let me make clear that I do not think there is anything in the article which several detailed copyedit and sentence reworking sessions could not clear up (though more extensive than I can offer). The article is very well-cited and the content appears to meets all GA criteria other than "reasonably well written". However, I cannot see how the article passes criteria 1 in its present condition, especially beyond the first sections.

To be more specific, in addition to many awkwardly phrased sentences, there are a number of sentences which are grammatically incorrect. For example, here is a sampling of broken sentences found in a quick read-through:

  • The city has many places of worship catered for the multi-religious population.
  • The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) in Sentul West is one of the most established centre for the performing arts, notably theatre, music, and film screening, in the country.
  • Despite cities around Asia are suffering declining tourist arrivals, Kuala Lumpur tourist arrivals increased from 6,210,900 in 1997 to 10,221,600 in 2000, or 64.6% increase in tourist arrivals.
  • The Hong Kong office of Channel V International, an international music channel, relocate its programme production unit in Kuala Lumpur by appointing the local company Double Vision Sdn Bhd.
  • Despite efforts to promote usage of public transportation, utilisation rates are low as only 16 percent of the population uses public transportation in 2006.

Of course I can fix most of these examples myself, though I might have to guess at the wording intent on one or two. But the underlying content fault remains.

Should you have the time to look this over, I would appreciate your feedback, particularly if the fault is with my understanding of "reasonably well written". Would a suggestion on the talk page that the primary editor(s) invite one of the heavy-hitter copyeditors to help out with content issues suffice? I have no wish to unduly burden the hard-working editors who create quality articles, nor those who might have fallen a bit short of that goal. -- Michael Devore (talk) 04:38, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The issues there are some that would be picked up on (or should be) in a GA review, so in terms of quality you're fine. I think a note on the talk page, combined with you fixing any issues you have time to look at, would be the best way forward - GAR is backlogged and no fun. I don't have the time/patience to fully look at the article now (burned out by the reviewing I've been doing lately), but I would suggest that you start with a note on the talk page, and perhaps contact a few copyeditors yourself to try and help out. Dihydrogen Monoxide 04:43, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Guess I'll post on the talk page that I see more errors and will try to fix them as time permits, inviting others to do likewise. -- Michael Devore (talk) 23:18, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a plan. Dihydrogen Monoxide 04:13, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Re: Wikimania '09[edit]

Wow, that's pretty awesome! I was feeling a bit alone, but it's good to know there is a bit of support from the community for this =).

If you're talking about the Wikimediaau list, then yes, I'm on it. I like to keep my real name off of here, but I'm the person who's first name starts with "C" and last name with "F". I'll probably bother everyone on the list with a discussion of where we're at once the jury is announced, but I get the impression a lot of people are lukewarm about the idea, so I don't want to get too into their face.

I should bother you on WLM sometime? Lankiveil (talk) 12:40, 11 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Look, I must say, his points do have some merit, and it might be better for everyone if you tried to address them as best you could, or else let the FAC go, rather than arguing with him (especially in ALL CAPS...) - if it fails, just give it a while and go for it again, there's nothing against that. Dihydrogen Monoxide 22:20, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what to do though, I have stated my reasons for not doing what he wants numerous times. They were a band that was popular before the internet was, so there is not much about what happened between albums. Just about all information on the web is directed toward Layne Staley, and there are no books published on the band. If I can't add that information does that just mean I will have to settle for a very good GA? I don't know what else to add to the article. Woo, this sucks, I really hope Opeth does better when I am done with it. Burningclean [Speak the truth!] 03:50, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Mate, can you have a glance over at NS? I've tried to add some stuff, but have to look after my boy. I can't find any other reviews, but I'm sure you can find something I'm missing here. I've kind of just thrown the DDatHE review which comments on it, but other than that, it needs more work. Plus, the song meaning info should be expanded too. Anyway, I'll leave that to you as I head off. Cheers! --rm 'w avu 04:27, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you recently reviewed this and passed it as a GA. First of all, we have managed to get hold of some free images, which was something you reccomended. However, I am contacting you because I was wondering if you could offer a third opinion on a dispute between myself and another editor on the inclusion of an external link, as you have some familiarity with the article. The dispute is on the talk page can be found here. If you have no opinion or do not wish to get involved, then that is no problem. Thanks. J Milburn (talk) 12:18, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Dihydrogen Monoxide, my sincere thanks for your support and expression of confidence in me and my second request for adminship, which ended with 113 supports, 11 opposes, and 4 neutral. I would especially like to thank my admin coach and nominator, Rlevse and Ryan Postlethwaite who in addition to Ioeth all inspired me to run for a second candidacy. I would also like to make a special mention to Phoenix-wiki, you and OhanaUnited who all offered to do co-nominations, but I unfortunately had to decline. I had all these funny ideas that it would fail again, and I was prepared for the worst, but at least it showed that the community really does have something other places don't. Who would have though Gmail would have been so effective? 32 emails in one week! (Even if it does classify some as junk :P) I'm glad that I've been appointed after a nail biting and some might call, decision changing RFA, but if you ever need anything, just get in touch. Fair-use images[edit]

Fair-use images were already removed by this edit. Why did you remove more images? Can you please enlighten me? --Mankar Camorantalk 11:23, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use policy states that you are not allowed any (emphasis) fair use images in your userspace (WP:FU). The bot didn't remove all of them, I may not have removed all of them, but the ones I did shouldn't have been in there in the first place. Dihydrogen Monoxide 08:01, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, no problem. I actually thought so but since the bot did not remove them I thought they might have been acceptable. I'll make sure there won't be any FU (which reminds me of Cena's FU!) images. --Mankar Camorantalk 11:51, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fair use images are allowed in articles (otherwise we wouldn't allow them, full stop!) - just not in userspace (and you'll need to rationalise all article uses). Leave me a note if you need any help with that. Oh, and thanks for being reasonable about this (some users get pissed off when you edit their userpages....). Cheers, Dihydrogen Monoxide 11:56, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How far away from a GA status do you think this article is? Dan arndt (talk) 04:56, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, nice work. The "ARIA Hall of Fame" section needs expansion, and the "Nominations/Awards" could be converted to wikitable. Too many External links. At a glance though, you could definitely nominate it soon. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 05:00, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Will work on expansion of "ARIA Hall of Fame" - will need help on a wikitable (any suggestions on users who could help out there) - am continuing to insert references/citations for most points in the article - not certain what you mean by too many external links though. Dan arndt (talk) 06:08, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is that sufficent for the "Hall of Fame" section - what else do you suggest should be included. Dan arndt (talk) 08:09, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For a wikitable, I generally leach off Spebi or Lincalinca. With the external links, per (my interpretation of) WP:EL only the first two are necessary; that's also what I'd say in a GA review. For the hall of fame stuff, perhaps speak about why they were nominated for it? It's mostly good though. Nice work, again! Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 23:52, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Kevin O-Dog[edit]

I was merely trying to point out the fact that the article does, in no way, assert its notability and that it was obvious it needs to be deleted. Editors with partial knowledge of the movie itself and half knowledge of the policies can obviously see it needs to go, which is supported by the current "delete" votes. If I wanted to be uncivil (which is, I assume, why you brought it up) the message would have read very differntly, but seeing how I have behaved with almost saint-like civility in much worse situations in the recent past, I can assure you I had no intention of attacking editors in this much calmer atmosphere. I feel that if it's an attack on anything, it's an attack on the unmerited reverts of the redirect I imposed on the article prior to the AfD. ♣ Bishop Tutu Chat wit' me § Contributions ♣ 00:08, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ian Meckiff[edit]

Hi, had a look at the GA review. It is actually handy as you have picked up some of the jargon as an issue that I may have glossed over unthinkingly. This one in particular was a good pick up "Meckiff was not called in the 1960–61 Australian season, but his performances were ineffective as injuries restricted him" - how could he perform if he wasn't called in?" "Called" here means a no ball was called for throwing, not being called in. I wouldn't have picked that as ambiguous but it obviously is.

The article is comprehensive, at least on his cricket career. He is (in)famous for one thing and that is the manner of his exit from cricket, drummed out as a chucker.

I have seen a few things I would add to the review. Are you happy for me to add them? -- Mattinbgn\talk 12:00, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your assistance with the Ray Williams article. I had previously reverted it a number of times, and then requested help at the Australian Wikipedians' Noticeboard, as it's a bit hard for one person to watch it 24 hours. It wouldn't surprise me if the wayward editor is Ray Williams himself. A Wiki article about oneself is like having a permanent resume in full public view on the net, and in this case, the resume lists him as being a criminal, which I'm sure he doesn't like. I understand that the subject of the article would prefer he had a nice Wiki page about himself. But after being in jail for his involvement in Australia's biggest financial collapse, he joins the dubious ranks of Alan Bond and Christopher Skase. It was a good move to request page protection for a while. Lester 02:22, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks or the cleanup, but now I'm officially confused, since the page above gives both {{Rescue}} and {{tl|Rescue}} tags for use. You say the first one won't work. Perhaps I erred by giving it in CAPS, and it's case-sensitive? Or is the error someplace else? SBHarris 04:29, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for any possible confusion there. {{Rescue}} (which produces the template syntax, and a link to the template's page) is essentially the same as {{Rescue}}, except the latter doesn't have a link to the template's page as well. The all caps is different though; note the redlink on {{RESCUE}}. I hope this clarifies things a bit. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 05:13, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, so. Damned caps! But the reason the redlink didn't throw me off is because I frankly didn't expect an internal link to show up as linked, without the tl template prefix. But I see it does if it's working, and not if not. Golly. These | wikimarkup things (what are they called?) are confusing, as they do completely different things if used in links (where they separate what shows in the text, from what's actually called in the link), than they do when used inside the double curly brackets. Sigh. I suppose the latter actually triggers a subroutine or program of some kind? SBHarris 05:35, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The little curly brackets (I dunno their names, but the | is called a "pipe" - Help:Pipe) are used to transclude a page onto another page - basically to include page X into page Y. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 05:37, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I can see how that works for tags and templates, but how does it work when you trigger off a program which DOES something that way? BTW, consider the levels of irony in your use of Help:Pipe, which shows in... red. You have to preview these things, you know :). SBHarris 21:09, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
*slaps on that last point* - I wasn't referring to pipe trick, I was sure there was a general help page on piping. Maybe it's on mediawiki, I dunno. I'm not sure what you mean by "how does it work when you trigger off a program which DOES something that way?" - could you clarify (Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) may be more helpful than me). Cheers, Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 09:22, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Outdent: I mean if you put {{help}} on your talk page, it does more than just insert some tag template-- rather it actively notifies somebody somewhere. Whereas a lot of other templates do insert a page into your page, which is the template page. There are a lot of other curly bracket things where you fill in spaces, and it goes to some other page and adds your name and creates a subject heading and all kinds of other stuff. I seem to see these as two different actions, but perhaps they are somehow the same, at some underlying level? SBHarris 00:35, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Of mops and men[edit]

There are several reasons I've never run. A) I don't need admin tools for what I like to do. The only time I find it tempting is toward helping at DYK. B) I worry that if I had the tools I would be tempted to spend large amounts of time at AFD or ANI -- the great generators of the Wiki's negative energy -- and quickly become depressed. C) I'm generally only sure to be online in the evening for an hour or two, and sometimes miss even that. Some RFA participants oppose when questions are not answered rapidly. I've never had a week where I felt confident that I'd be adequately accessible. D) I worry about what happened to Gracenotes. Though I meant them constructively, I too have made critical comments of editors who seem to have long memories. Running through that gauntlet doesn't seem worth it if all I'm going to do is update the DYK template. --JayHenry (talk) 07:09, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Back[edit]

Just letting you know, I'm back. Long story. FT:Dream Days, huh? --rm 'w avu 09:37, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So I was bored, so I got the proposal started, but I realised, it's a pretty small scope and really, we should include ATGD and its DVD in the topic, so maybe we should work towards vastly improving each of these articles (as ATGD tour article is like to qualify as a list, we probably need to put a LOT of work into it, to ensure it meets the FL criteria, but that would work to our advantage, since we'd then have three FCs and four GAs, a good ratio, I believe. What do you think? --rm 'w avu 12:54, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just as a side note, the FT criteria doesn't require the topic to contain a lot of articles, it requires it to contain all articles in the topic, if that makes any sense. The only relation that ATGD and Dream Days have is that they were both around the same time, roughly, but the topic is Dream Days and its singles, and that should be it. The topic looks fine at the moment, in my opinion. Spebi 21:58, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, good to see you back; we'll need to chat some time, mate (hope all is well until then). As for the FT, and using Wikipedia:Featured topics/Christ Illusion as a reference, I think we're fine...ATGD isn't really part of the album, I don't think we should include it. Agree with teh Speb. On another note, I heard Pick You Up on the radio today for...like...the first time since I moved to Brisbane (in 1998). Crazy times.

Input sought[edit]

I see that you fight a lot of vandalism and that you're on right now as I type this. I'm seeking input from some vandal fighters outside my usual circle in order to get a fresh perspective:

When we revert vandalism by someone who already received a level 4 warning, any other warnings make it seem like, "Oh, we didn't really mean it when we said that was your last warning," like the parent who says, "This is the last time I'm going to tell you" five times before taking action. What about something like this?[4] Another big reason for suggesting this: So any admin responding to the AIV could see at a glance that the level 4 warning was for a violation earlier than the last one.

When a vandal keeps vandalizing the same article, I've seen admins make the mistake of thinking an edit after the warning was actually the edit for which they'd been warned, in which case the admin fails to block. If the AIV process consistently worked as smoothly and quickly as possible, nothing like this would be needed, but that's just not the case. Sometimes it takes a bit for the admin to research the case. In the meantime, the vandal just keeps vandalizing. This isn't just about the message we send the vandal. It's also about the message we send to any other users who might see all those pages where somebody got a "last" warning followed by several more warnings.

It might also prevent duplicate reporting of vandalism, which just adds overhead to an already busy process. I know I've certainly found myself sometimes preparing to report vandalism only to find the user was already blocked by the time I brought the information to AIV, especially with reports that are more complicated to explain. If I saw a tag like this, I could have moved on to something more useful.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Doczilla (talk) 10:15, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't been vandalfighting now (just saw it on my watchlist), but I do so occasionally. Anyways, I think that User:Doczilla/Template:Uw-vandalism4x is a good idea - although ideally, the best thing would be for admins just to check contribs/warnings better. I do agree with the notion that repeated level 4 warnings (for instance) are like crying wolf, so I do support this proposal. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 10:19, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. If it's okay with you, I'd like to copy this onto my talk page to keep the replies together. Doczilla (talk) 10:21, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A Thumbs up!
Thanks again. It looks like it's going to remain a fairly even split with a slight majority favoring it. I have to present it on a wider scale but wanted feedback from a smaller group of people to make sure it seemed worthwhile to enough people. I understand the argument that some vandals will be spurred to vandalize more if told they've been reported, but heck, that happens when a lot of them get a final warning. I really liked the way you put it in terms of "crying wolf." Best, Doczilla (talk) 10:27, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wiggles image tag[edit]

Di, I noticed that you removed the image tag from Talk:The Wiggles, and I replaced it. The article does need an image, as discussed on the talk page, because the infobox image, which is a group photo of The Wiggles, is out of date. Greg Page, a founding member, who had to leave the group in late 2006 due to illness, is in the image. There is no free image photo of The Wiggles with Sam Moran, Greg's replacement, but a call has gone out for one. I'd like the tag to remain, so that it remains on the Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of people list. If you think that the discussion is enough, though, let me know and we'll remove the tag again. Thanks! --Figureskatingfan (talk) 14:33, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Um, never mind! After some thought, I think I've come up with a better solution. Although I wish there was a better image in the infobox, I believe that it was a good solution. I've also removed the tag again. Please let me know what you think. --Figureskatingfan (talk) 19:09, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Eek - I forgot about Greg leaving. Sorry about that. Ideally, I would think that the infobox image should contain the new member, but if there’s no free alternative then I’d go with the image currently there, at least in the meantime. You might be able to temporarily justify a fair use image with the new member elsewhere in the article (if you can build a case against {{subst:rfu}}….good luck!), but not the infobox. Anyways, good luck with the article. Cheers, Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 23:30, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was hoping you could help me out - having been doing a little bit of work on Australian hip hop artists - unfortunately there are not a lot of sources to reference on the subject. Anyway could you have a look at the article on Hyjak N Torcha and let me now whether it satisifies the notability criteria - particularly the one covering 'coverage from reliable sources'. Any assistance in ensuring or providing advice on the notability of the article would be greatfully accepted. Dan arndt (talk) 08:38, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm tempted to redirect you to WP:MUSICNN, but I'll take a look anyway! :) I think the assertion there is OK (not even borderline, I guess) - some Triple J, some newspapers, etc. It would be good if the refs could be formatted to note the publisher, this makes it easier to pick out the "notability asserting coverage" (blah!). Appearing on a notable record label is also mentioned on WP:MUSIC if I recall correctly. So yeah, it's notable; I've removed the tag. Thnx will re-format cited references - have had problems with Precious Roy who has a tendency to delete articles rather than check notability, so I wanted someone independent to confirm what I already thought. Dan arndt (talk) 08:48, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, and good luck. Deletionism isn't pretty, but we've won this time! :) dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 08:51, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dewey Shannon[edit]

Hi Dihydrogen Monoxide. Thanks for helping to deal with the multitude of start-up accounts over at the Talk:Ray Williams (businessman) page. I see user:Le Droit! vandalised the page. One of Le Droit!'s comments was signed a second time, which the second time appeared as user:Dewie Shannon. I believe the two editors to be one and the same. Regards, Lester 09:01, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Highly likely (oh dear, I'll get eaten for saying that!), but I don't think we really need to do anything about it. I mean, they can't really make a consensus against us with their current arguments, no matter how many socks they create (RfC if desperate). You're welcome to go ahead and request blocks, but I really don't see the point; hopefully they'll realise that it's not working and stop. dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 09:03, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A checkuser was nonetheless run, and there's been a bit of blockage taking place. Aah well. dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 01:23, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
