Welcome![edit]

I haven't reviewed it in detail (and may not) but I was glad to see your work on FFriess from the Times article. I've made a few minor adjustments to your citation there. One, I'd recorded the headline (from the front Times webpage) differently than you had it; and yours didn't strike me maybe as an exact rendition, the comma, the lower case "a"; so I shifted to mine. If I was wrong or if yours was also right and you prefer it, change it back or ask me and I will. The other changes I expect you'll agree with, are real minor. You probably didn't even notice, but I'd put the article in the Ext. links at the bottom of the article earlier (not ready to do the work you did at that moment). I've now removed it there because it's (now well-)represented in the references. Something to watch for if you think of it in the future.

And, welcome! You're relatively new; and I have to note, "red-lettered". Some choose to stay that way, but it's easy to click on the red and create however elaborate or simple a user page as you wish. I think it looks better. Prob. works within Wiki a little more smoothly. This page may cover it more thoroughly for you, if you wish.

All best.

Well, betraying my ways: You may be curious (as I couldn't wait) to learn that the page had almost 15,000 hits on the 9th. One of my other minor edits was to add accessdate to your footnote; to do so I had to assume you were in the Western Hemisphere working in the evening (or something like that); the "standard clock" for Wiki is called UTC, which I date myself by calling (correctly I think) "like Greenwich Mean"; ... so your edit was booked at 3 a.m. UTC but late evening EST eg (five hours behind, I think now). ... Here's the page activity page. Get to it via View history tab up top of any page; then via Page view statistics up top of history page. ... If I was wrong on your access date, you or I can change it to the 10th. (I don't think Wiki expects one to ... adjust to ... UTC for dating; then there'd be "skews" ...; or I just couldn't keep it straight in my head.) ... It's sufficiently contorted, I forgot to make my point: namely, your edit was booked on the 10th regardless of your local time when you made it; and hence had no direct impact on the 15,000 who accessed the page the 9th, most of them probably due to the Times article. (There was a smaller spike the 8th, maybe 7T; but this was definitely post-primary. And the Times article was prob. available on-line for a part of the 8th. Of course, I don't know all the (other possible) news reports that could have contributed to the W/Th spike.) ... Prolix! (Helps keep me in my place.) (In various possible senses ... of the phrase.) Well, reply here or at my "talk" if you wish. Cheers. Swliv (talk) 20:03, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Edit summaries, style changes[edit]

Hello. You performed some extensive copyediting on Dyslexia but did not complete an edit summary. Please always do that so other editors can understand what you were intending.

In this case you changed some en-dashes to em-dashes. The Manual of Style (MOS) says that we should not change the existing style of an article without a substantial reason (for example "the way I prefer" is not a substantial reason for changing an existing style) and in any case we should not make such changes inconsistently. Since "(nbsp)(en-dash)(space)" is clearly a deliberate style choice as distinct from something like "(space)(minus)(space)" which does not conform to MOS there was no justification for those changes in this case. I will restore the previous style. --Mirokado (talk) 12:59, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

License tagging for File:SITA business logo and strapline.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:SITA business logo and strapline.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 21:05, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Puget Sound Regional Council logo.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Puget Sound Regional Council logo.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 08:55, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for copyediting and updating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Please consider making an eedit summary , even somthing simple such as Copyediting & updating - I believe tjhis has been mentioned several times before. File:NCHRP50thSmall.jpg missing description details[edit]

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:NCHRP50thSmall.jpg is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers.

If the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

If you have any questions please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:23, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Copyright problem: Jean-Yves Le Drian[edit]

Dear Haeinous, I note you recently added information from the French Wikipedia into Jean-Yves Le Drian. Please note that translations of copyrighted text, even from other Wikimedia projects, are derivative works, and attribution must be given to satisfy licensing requirements. Opting in to VisualEditor[edit]

As you may know, VisualEditor ("Edit beta") is currently available on the English Wikipedia only for registered editors who choose to enable it. Since you have made 100 or more edits with VisualEditor this year, I want to make sure that you know that you can enable VisualEditor (if you haven't already done so) by going to your preferences and choosing the item, "Enable VisualEditor. It will be available in the following namespaces: $1". This will give you the option of using VisualEditor on articles and userpages when you want to, and give you the opportunity to spot changes in the interface and suggest improvements. We value your feedback, whether positive or negative, about using VisualEditor, at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:25, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

This edit shows my removals (and there is a followup clarification after that). Read the WP:OVERLINKING guideline for when to avoid repeating a link; in general, we should avoid repeating a link in an article. Flyer22 (talk) 15:18, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Feedback needed on using special characters[edit]

Hello. Thank you so much for using VisualEditor. Having editors use it is the best way for the Wikimedia Foundation to develop it into the best tool it can be.

While we always welcome general feedback (please report any issues in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product or drop your feedback on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org), the developers are especially interested right now in feedback on the special character inserter. This new tool is used for inserting special characters (including symbols like , IPA pronunciation symbols, mathematics symbols, and characters with diacritics). It is intended to help people whose computers do not have good character inserters. For example, many Mac users prefer to use the extensive "Special Characters…" tool present at the bottom of the Edit menu in all applications or to learn the keyboard shortcuts for characters like ñ and ü.

The current version of the special characters tool in VisualEditor is very simple and very basic. It will be getting a lot of work in the coming weeks and months. It does not contain very many character sets at this time. (The specific character sets can be customized at each Wikipedia, so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants.) But the developers want your ideas at this early stage about ways that the overall concept could be improved. I would appreciate your input on this question, so please try out the character inserter and tell me what changes to the design would (or would not!) best work for you.

Screenshot of the Insert menu in VisualEditor
The "insert" pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the 'Special character' tool.
Screenshot of Special Characters tool
This is the Special character inserter as it appears on many wikis. (Some may have customized it.) Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

Issues you might consider:

  • Do you normally use a character inserter? Which character sets are useful to you? Should it include all 18 of the character sets provided in the wikitext editor's newer toolbar at the English Wikipedia, the 10 present in the older editor toolbar, or some other combination of character sets?
  • How many special characters would you like to see at one time?
    • Should there be a "priority" or "favorites" section for the 10 or 12 characters that most editors need most often? Is it okay if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited priority set?
    • How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
    • How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
  • The wikitext editor has never included many symbols and characters, like and . Do you find that you need these missing characters? If the character inserter in VisualEditor includes hundreds or thousands of special characters, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should be done for users without enough space to display more than a few dozen characters?
  • Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
  • Some people believe that the toolbar already has too many options—how would you simplify it?

The developers are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed, even if this requires significant changes.

Please leave your views on the MediaWiki feedback page (your regular username/password works there), or, if you'd prefer, you can contact me directly on my talk page. It would be really helpful if you can tell me how frequently you need to use special characters in your typical editing and what languages are important to you.

Thank you again for your work with VisualEditor and for any feedback you can provide. I really do appreciate it. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:42, 17 February 2014 (UTC)
