Typhoon Chataan's damage

Karl 1980

Looking at HURDAT, it seems that while the unnamed 1991 hurricane became a subtropical storm at 36.7°N, it did so late on October 31; by 0000 UTC on November 1, it had moved 0.7° south, which would have tied Karl's record of 36.0. Off-season hurricanes

(Had to do a double-take when I ended up at what I thought was the wrong user page)

After I wrote my list of comments, I thought more about what was actually missing from your article. I thought of the following things, but didn't want to whack them on the end of my FLC comments before you'd had a chance to deal with everything else I said...

• A picture showing trajectories of all off-season hurricanes. The picture on the right shows trajectories for all cat 5 Atlantic hurricanes, for example. A similar thing for off-season hurricanes would be great. You've briefly mentioned where they form and where they usually make landfall, but there's nothing visual to back that up. In addition, it's one of the very few pictures you could use which simultaneously describes/includes every off-season hurricane at once.
• I think you need a section (perhaps redesign the background section) to include the following... I haven't read anything to do with hurricanes previously, so you'll need to fill in a lot of the blanks anyway...
  • Definitions of off-season and on-season by various organisations (past and present) involved with monitoring hurricanes. There is something similar to this already in the article, but make sure it's complete. Also emphasise the actual role of these agencies (for example, The National Hurricane Center is responsible for monitoring all tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes which form in the north Atlantic. It's something which layreaders won't necessarily know)
  • Why are hurricanes less likely to form during the off-season. Once again, I don't know anything about hurricanes but there must be a meterological reason why hurricanes typically form during the hurricane season, and why they don't during the off-season. You may need to explain background into hurricane formation itself to do this.
  • Characteristics of off-season hurricanes. Where do they typically form/typically move/typically make landfall? You've mentioned these facts here and there over the article, but they should be grouped together. Would work well with the trajectory picture I mentioned earlier.
  • Characteristics of off-season hurricanes compared to on-season hurricanes. Is the only difference between the two the month in which it forms? Are they any other differences? In general, do off-season hurricanes have similar pressures/winds/strength/duration/trajectories to on-season hurricanes?

I think if you were able to add these things then it would form a much better standalone article, especially as there's no other article for off-season hurricanes which users could otherwise read to get this kind of information. --Tntnnbltn (talk) 10:50, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments. Some things are redundant: hurricanes occur during the hurricane season because the hurricane season was made around when most hurricanes form. I will get the cumulative image, good idea, I've used it in others. I understand that "hurricane season" itself was defined arbitarily, but what I meant in my comments is there must be meterological reason why there is a seasonal variation to begin with. i.e. Why do less cyclones form in the Atlantic basin during Dec-Mar than during Jun-Nov. 1776 in Louisiana

Nice catch. If Chenoweth says it hit Louisiana on that date, you can likely take that to the bank. I'll assign a date to that system within the Louisiana hurricane history today. It would likely be a while before I'm able to go over to the Library of Congress and check out what impact the storm may have had in Louisiana within larger national papers. There were no newspapers in Louisiana before the early 19th century, as far as I know, so the sources of information would either be national papers or diaries of people who lived in Natchitoches, La Balize, or New Orleans in 1776, which were the only inhabited locations in Louisiana by people of European descent at that time. It really isn't easy to figure out. I know all those non-developing systems were considered TDs after the fact, and renumbered. However, since there is no official source of that information outside of that database, and TD standards changed in the late 1980s, to some degree it has been left up to me to decide until the re-analysis reaches 1984. And that's not a good thing in the eyes of wikipedia. The November system was definitely extratropical near Florida, though it could have been subtropical when it approached Bermuda. Ultimately, the HPC rainfall project talks about one extra tropical depression, so it ends up being the source. That would leave it 18. Thegreatdr (talk) 04:12, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

There are two reasons why I think they bothered with this. A couple of them either wanted to establish to tropical depression database for NHC, or it was something they needed to do to comply with other WMO regional specialized meteorological centers. Even JTWC has historically treated TDs similarly to TSs and HU/TYs. The reanalysis should take care of this problem when it reaches 1984. Thegreatdr (talk) 16:18, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Hurricane Stan

I've started to take a crack at improving this article, now having completed its met history. I wanted to know how much of the non-tropical system impact to put in. The system that caused it was not Stan and the actual low dissipated early on October 5. Rainfall graphics tidbit

If it wasn't for CLIQR, the Unnamed Tropical Storm of 1956 would be one of the last graphics older storms I'd be producing for Atlantic tropical cyclones impacting the United States. There are still many to tackle for Mexico, and those will likely go back into the late 1950s. The original plan was to bridge back to the former rainfall survey, which went through 1955, published by HPC's predecessor organization. For reference, I'm only planning to go back to 1950 with the TC Rainfall Climo, with a few other old storms added where 24-hour rainfall records were set in various states. Most of the remaining database development will lie with the CLIQR database, my working version of an expanded extended best track database for the Atlantic and eastern Pacific which helps find a match to a hypothetical, or current, TC threat. I need to know more about google news. Whats the website? Are article searches simpler than the hurricane archive was? We are fairly unique within wikipedia concerning our use of news articles as primary sources for these hurricane articles (though we really have no other choice). Lisa Simpson

Hello, I just noticed that you left a review on the page's FAC, which I failed to notice because of the comments immediately after yours (and I apologize for taking so long to get to it). I have a few responses/questions, that I'll post here.

• I think the "Role in the Simpsons" section is a bit short. The second paragraph of the lede (top of the article) and the fourth paragraph of "Role in the Simpsons" cover similar content, and yet the "role" section isn't any longer. Could you pad that section out more?
  • I'm not a fan of padding articles for length, but do you have any suggestions for what could be added?
• For the "Voice" section, it says that Smith read two lines for Bart and was then told she done. Did she really get the job for Lisa based on those two lines? Or, was she called back?
  • In all of the interviews I've read, Smith is kind of vague on certain details, and there is a lot of contradiction from various cast members. For example, Nancy Cartwright claimed in her book that she was the only one to read for Bart, but Smith says she read for the role before taking Lisa.
• Under reception, you only mention the positive reception, which is more broadly about the show. I know many people who name Lisa as their least-favorite character. Surely there is some encyclopediac merit to include the opposing viewpoint.
  • It's a good point, and I will take a look, but the big problem will be getting constructive comments from reliable sources. There are some things I'd like to add, but haven't been able to find the sources for it (for example, I wanted to add something about Lisa's character being shifted from just being moralistic to being a left wing radical, but was unable to find any non-forum/blog sources). Hurricane Catarina?

So I was perusing the Metsul blog to look for Anita-related facts, and I ran into this tidbit:

“ Em primeiro lugar, é importante dizer que tanto o furacão Catarina de 2004 como a Tempestade Tropical Anita de 2010 são eventos extremamente raros na região, logo não podemos falar de uma temporada de ciclones tropicais no Atlântico Sul, ao contrário do que existe no Atlântico Norte entre 1º de junho e 30 de novembro ”

Roughly translated, that states, "In the first place, it is important to say that both 2004's Hurricane Catarina and 2010's Tropical Storm Anita are extremely rare events for the region, so we cannot speak of a South Atlantic tropical cyclone season, opposite to what exists in the North Atlantic between June 1 and November 30". It seems odd to me they call Catarina a hurricane, while they could have called it a tropical cyclone. Should the Catarina article be modified to reflect that? Money doubles

Hurricane, in reference to this edit HERE while it appear that you corrected it to the right number of zeros, the final figure of $635 million does not appear correct.

Why? as a rule of thumb money doubles every 12 years (or, said differently, losses half of its value every 12 years). There are many references to this in the world of finance, here's just one HERE. Look at this simple and quick way of computing $50Million in 2010 dollars:

Thus, 2010 is about $6.35Billion, which was the previous number there. I am reverting your edit until there can be enough reason to call it just $635Million in 2010 dollars. 93L sandbox

Hello Hurricanehink! Recently the National Hurricane Center upgraded 93L to TD1, so I think if you updated that sandbox of yours, Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Tropical Depression One. Yep, the SATL cyclones have a whole bunch of sources from Anita and Catarina, and the research of previous cyclones. The Mediterranean TC have a few refs, a few sections have no refs at all, and therefore, there was probably original research in there. Yea, the article had too much original research, and, unlike in the South Atlantic, there are few explicit sources that say they were tropical cyclones in the Mediterranean. The sources we have say they were like polar lows, particularly the wintertime ones. Until there is more research into them, and until there is an official tropical cyclone there (or unofficial but considered by some legitimate agency, like NOAA or UKMET), I personally don't there should be an article on "Mediterranean tropical cyclones". San Felipe hurricane

Hi, thanks for taking a look at the article, I hope to collaborate in a few Hurricane articles. I am going to change the name back since its name is San Felipe hurricane, not 1876 San Felipe hurricane, I have read that the project has a policy on naming hurricane articles by:

"Unnamed (including numbered) hurricanes (used for older tropical cyclones in all basins) should be distinguished by location, type, and year. Three naming conventions are acceptable: Galveston Hurricane of 1900, 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane, or Unnamed Hurricane (1975). All unnamed hurricanes should always have a year in the name. Again, create redirects wherever necessary to avoid confusion or duplicate articles."

but as I have explained to HurricaneSpin; many of the "unnamed" hurricanes HAVE names. And they are not "location, type, and year" names. Since the 1870ts San Juan had a meteorological observatory, and Havana before that. Still most of the hurricane before that were named and those name were used officially by Governments. Just because the US was not aware of this, it does not make it less true. Those names were not "popular culture" name of because of tradition, well mayby in part. But still that was the way the hurricanes were named back then and Caribbean, American (in the real sense not only the US), European and other governments and their citizens recognized them as their names, even the US at times.

I created 4 hurricane article in good faith and in less than a few hours they were nominated for merging. Sorry if I seem to come on strong but I get the felling that if I had named them 1876 Puerto Rico Hurricane, the editor would not have been so quick to propose merge, and instead would offer pointer on what he considers would improve the article. I am not assuming that there is bad faith, but sometimes because of self imposed "guidelines" one can be unable to grasp something se clear and obvious. thanks for the quick response. I know editors don't own articles, I have been around wiki since before 2007. As I also know Wikiprojects don't own them ether, although I do know they have more pro than cons, personally a member of 2. As for the name, you have a point, but the year in front of the name just isn't appropriate, in any case it could be San Felipe I, as is called in some official sources. In those the second one is written as San Felipe II. I feel that writing something like:

This article is about the hurricane San Felipe in 1876. For the San Felipe Hurricane of 1928, see San Felipe II Hurricane

Hurricane Katrina damage total

I truly believe that the actual damage total for Katrina was above $100 billion. Sources from several places (outside the NHC) clearly state damage of at least $120 billion. Most recently, I came across a report published on July 28 of this year stating $135 billion in damage from Katrina alone. Very large report for Hurricane Cesar

I just started looking into Spanish sources on Hurricane Cesar and I found an extremely useful one, located at http://www.cne.go.cr/CEDO-CRID/pdf/spa/doc894/doc894.htm . It's a 138 page document (way too large for Google Translate) and is scanned so it can't easily be copy/pasted into the translate box.
