Newsletter and assessments[edit]

Hink, do you want to make up a quick bit on hurricane preparedness for the newsletter? I'll do it later if its not done (by 2300 UTC) I suppose, but I'd rather not do it (too much like hard work, lol). IMO you are getting a little overbureaucratic on assessment. Its guidelines after all and IMO it provides good advice on when to promote / seek promotion. However, our criteria are harsher than GANs in general, so if an article has passed GAN it is a GA-class or higher even if it doesn't meet our B-class guidelines.--Nilfanion (talk) 14:27, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah that works for the newsletter, it was your suggestion after all. As for the assessment stuff I think it was more a comment on how you were acting lately, just saying chill out a bit :) I note your frustration with the must-make-article crowd is getting you close to being a little incivil at times. I agree with your assessments for the most part and you are doing a good job on that. Those more are guidelines to respond to: "How good is this article I just made?" and "I think this article should be upgraded", with the already assigned classes might as well leave them alone (though watch out for grade creep). I think I'll work in some mention of the assessments page into the newsletter (Perhaps that would make a more relevant topic than preparedness?).--Nilfanion (talk) 19:08, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I think I'll go make the blurb on the newsletter describing the functional parts of the WikiProject (assessments, merging, etc.); thats more useful than a topic of general interest IMO.--Nilfanion (talk) 19:12, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think the balance of that was about right in the end (should have started it a bit sooner though). No problem on the assessment stuff, hell I generally agree with your viewpoint (and you're not really taking it out on me). Sorry to hear your life getting you down currently, just thought best to gently remind you now, before Wikipedia starts adding to your stress instead of relieving it. Perhaps you should try something different, like reading this article on 2005AHS?--Nilfanion (talk) 11:39, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #2[edit]

Number 2, July 2, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list.

Storm of the month

Tropical Storm Alberto near peak intensity
Tropical Storm Alberto near peak intensity
Tropical Storm Alberto was the first tropical storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season. Forming on June 10 over the western Caribbean Sea, the system moved northwestward as a disorganized tropical depression due to dry air and wind shear. It passed to the west of Cuba, bringing heavy rainfall to Cuba and Grand Cayman. The rainfall damaged 37 homes and destroyed 3 in Havana. It strengthened over the Gulf of Mexico and became a tropical storm on June 11. The center reformed to the northeast near its deep convection, and Alberto reached a peak intensity of 70 mph (110 km/h) before weakening and hitting the Florida Panhandle on June 13. Alberto brought heavy rainfall to the southeastern United States, peaking at 7.16 inches in Raleigh, North Carolina. The rainfall in Florida was beneficial in places as it alleviated drought conditions. The storm indirectly caused two deaths: A pilot who crashed near Tampa due to poor conditions and a boy who drowned in the flooding in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Cyclone1/List of Atlantic Canadian hurricanes[edit]

I just saw that message you left on my Canada page. Thanks. I was inspired by the fact that Canada never gets that much publicty from storms, and the success of your page. Personally, I don't really like the list form used in Arizona hurricanes. It's sort of confusing. I also have grown to dislike the "catastrophic series" layout. I know, I know I created a page with that layout, but I don't really care for it anymore. I think I will change the name of it and mention Freda. This page is a while from finished. →Cyclone1 05:27, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. →Cyclone1 17:07, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another 1992 no-name storm?[edit]

Hink, I just thought I'd tell you about this. We both know the April 1992 storm, but WHERE DID THIS COME FROM? Look at Gibbs image. Any thoughts? I mentioned it on the 1992 talk page. →Cyclone1 18:44, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, It's pretty organized on the Nasa image, which is what freaked me out. →Cyclone1 19:10, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tip of the day project update[edit]

Just trying to get things better organized around there. Toward that end, I've created a task list template for the project. If all the contributors to the project placed it on their user page, we could all keep in touch more easily (with announcements, alerts, etc.). It, and the latest announcements can be found at:

1999 Atlantic Hurricane Season Page[edit]

There is no picture for Tropical Depression 2. What do I do?--Lionheart Omega 23:02, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The same is true for TD 12 of the same year.--Lionheart Omega 23:12, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Another is TD 7 --Lionheart Omega 23:31, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I found pictures of all three depreesions on this site. How do I make them pictures in Wikipedia?--Lionheart Omega 15:52, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for helping me. I noticed an inconsistancy however. For 1999, 2004, and 2005, TD's are mentioned. But between 2000 and 2003 TD's aren't mentioned. What should I do?--Lionheart Omega 22:07, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I finished TD's for 2003. Yay! Now to do 2002 tomorrow.--Lionheart Omega 23:48, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Re: Canada Canes[edit]

Finished! Finally finished. What does it need before I can publish it? I decided againts adding Freda/Columbus day storm. Freda actually had little to do with the storm, so I excluded it.→Cyclone1 02:52, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I think it could work quite nicely with a table at the beggining of each era. What exactly should I include in the table? All the storms for the era? Or just non-notable ones along with a notable storms section below it? (either way I'll add a notable storms section.) →Cyclone1 03:29, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I will surely not do an exact copy (I can't stand colored wikitables) but I will base it off of that. Maybe a small table right after each heading containing all the storms, followed by a notes/notable storms section for that era (If there are any.) I'll do the first one as an example of what I mean. →Cyclone1 03:40, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think it takes up a little too much space. →Cyclone1 04:02, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Disregard that last message. My window was too small. Doesn't look bad. →Cyclone1 04:04, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lol, ok. →Cyclone1 15:20, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll publish it shortly, I'm currently using the CHC storm info to spice up the article a bit. →Cyclone1 15:35, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. →Cyclone1 18:33, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Here it is. →Cyclone1 19:31, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Look at the talk page! Boy, Nilfanion can nitpick. Lol. →Cyclone1 01:20, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing short of a Miracle[edit]

Do you remember the time that Gibbs shut down, and when it rebooted, I found danielle and earlof 1992? Well it happened again but much broader. 1996 Goes 8 just showed up on the page! This may not be such a huge deal, but since I have known of Gibbs, 1996 Atlantic sattelie pictures were not there. Can't wait to see the Huroncane in Gibs!!!! THIS JUST MADE MY DAY!→Cyclone1 14:56, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I wasn't expecting much from the huroncane. Oh well. It's still pretty cool that 1996 has pics now. And right after we find a decent Edouard pic, too. Ahh, irony. →Cyclone1 15:47, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Lake Huron is small, so there on the worldview, you would not get a detailed view.--Lionheart Omega 02:35, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very true, that makes sense. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:36, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Speaking of this subject tomorrow I want to say something on the abnomal warmth of the Great Lakes, as I do not have time now. Oh, and Hurricanehink, thanks for bringing back sanity:).--Lionheart Omega 01:59, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Are you looking at the anomalies or the actual temperatures? Anomalies are bound to be a lot higher, because in the past they've always been cold. About the last comment, thanks, I guess??? --Hurricanehink (talk) 18:25, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, it is a thanks (for you saving my sanity of course) and theoretically, you might be able to have a tropical system. But it would have to be very small, the size of Tropical Cyclone Tracy or maybe even smaller.--Lionheart Omega 02:51, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, no problem. Very true on the size. It's probably possible, but conditions generally aren't that favorable. --Hurricanehink (talk) 03:07, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The storm would have to be like Hurricane Epsilon. For your future responses ,please , put them on my talk page, because I like that way.--Lionheart Omega 01:13, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
After looking at the article for Mediterrean Tropical Cyclones, I have a question. How is it that they don't need waters as hot as the Atlantic to become subtropical?--Lionheart Omega 23:49, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Hink, I don't really have time to sort this out at the moment (with 1000+ track maps to do) but I noticed that the Aftermath section of Iris is in copyvio-land, its a blatant copy of that charity's website (it even uses we).--Nilfanion (talk) 12:19, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have worked on the ref tags. Still.. I am very confused on how much more inline sourcing you need. I mean I can gotthrough the websites that were listed under External links to see if I can ref some things out of there, but I have searched the web for a lot of information. I do not have access to the books that are listed and I don't have any of the books. Those were there before I even started with the artcile. --Shane (T - C - E) 02:38, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Again, I wouldn't be able to correclty source them. I tried finding supplement websites for most information. --Shane (T - C - E) 02:45, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Super Slow Tropical Cyclone Seasons[edit]

As long as I have been tracking the Northwest Typhoon Pacific basin, the Northeast Hurricane Basin, North Atlantic hurricanr basin, and the North Indian cyclone basin, all basins have been so inactive unlike 2005. For the Atlantic hurricane season, the CSU announced an hyperactive season with about 17 storms. But as of July 9, 2006, only one storm, Alberto has formed. But I came to ask a question: What do you think something is give slow tropical cyclone activity? Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody 20:14, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(Guess who) I'mmmmm baaaaack! I see things haven't gotten outrageously out of hand since I've been gone. How have you been? Ol' Al knocked us around a little bit down there. I got a few pictures of the crazy surf it kicked up. The whole month was a helluva lota fun. Congratulations on your college acceptance! Don't you still have to finish your senior year though? I don't know many 17 year olds going to college. I know a few graduates in their freshman year in college and most of them are 19 or about to be. -- §HurricaneERIC§Damagesarchive 18:39, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No offense to anyone here, but I kind of enjoyed the peace and quiet. Wow, you blew through school fast. I turned 17 exactly one month and two days ago and I'll be a junior come August. But (expletive) school, I plan to have a blast in my final year as a youth. Childhood has its perks, but it's great to be able to do stuff by myself without having to drag my parents (who never much cared what I watched, rented, read or where I wanted to go) along. Back to the tropics, there's trouble brewing in the Western Pacific, have you heard? Bilis is forecast to crash into Taipei as a typhoon. The hurricane center also says something in the eastern Pacific may develop soon too. The Atlantic however is ominously quiet, isn't it? -- §HurricaneERIC§Damagesarchive 19:13, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, TD-3-E is now Bud and the disturbance to its east is getting more organized. The Atlantic remains ominously quiet. I don't like to make predictions, but I will say that I seriously doubt this season is going to be as bad as last season (though that's not saying a whole lot). This time last year, Cindy was whipping up Louisiana. We've only had one so far this year. My activity on Wikipedia for the foreseeable future will probably be restricted more to induvidual storm articles that I think actually are useful. Since my hard drive crashed, I've been without my hurricane archive. I'm waiting for some computer geek at my dad's work to pull the data off. Until then, I have almost nothing of what I've gathered over the past six months (everything prior to that was backed up). All I have are the little basic summeries of the 1979-2004 seasons, which I could basically recite from memory now. I've also lost a few of my web resources that were in My Favorites, so I'm not going to be quite as much help as I once was but I'll do what I can. A word of caution: don't turn a blind eye to the Atlantic. Storms have a way of sneaking up on us in a hurry (a la Katrina). -- §HurricaneERIC§archive 21:20, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ha! I was right! Sneaky devils! That tropical depression formed right on our doorstep. I don't really have any articles I'm looking forward to working on, I just plan to hang around and see what comes up. I'm hoping to make it as stress-free as possible. List of Atlantic hurricane seasons is still my little pet project. It's nice to see that a few old friends are still hanging around there. I'd like some of us to get together and try to expand the seasonal articles as much as we can. I had an Excel file listing basic stats (peak intensity and period of existance) on every Atlantic cyclone since 1979 and I'm trying to rebuild that now. I really don't consider it hard work. If it's something you enjoy studying, you wouldn't consider it hard work, but it does take time. So I'll be on the talk pages for now. But those are my plans. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 17:39, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pongsona[edit]

Gary Padgett's summary is useful. It certainly gives some idea as to how to write a storm history for these storms. However one thing to watch out for is I suspect he used the "live" data not the best track data to compile his summary. The JMA link below is probably the best source for the figures in the storm history and infobox, but the prose isn't useful, so using Padgett's as a guide seems sensible to me: reference the JMA, external link Padgett's. The problem in using two data sources is that an explanation of the differences would be needed, and an section on the storm history of Pongsona should be about the storm not the difference between JMA and JTWC. If its well written a reader should not be able to notice any contradictions, or if they do they are concisely explained. Here's another couple links:

Probably best to get started on Pongsona's storm history first, because that's the problem section. One query, do you think I should go and make the track map up from the JMA data? That's doable but will have to wait a little bit (with Pongsona a long way from FAC its a non-issue at the moment).--Nilfanion (talk) 09:49, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the easiest way to dodge the issue is to just use 10-minute throughout the article. The only place the 1-minute speed truly matters is in the Guam impact, perhaps just leave it in that section alone? One sentence on the lines of, "the US standard used on Guam is to average windspeeds over 1 minute, however the 10 minutes is the international standard used by the JMA", would probably do the job. The track map issue isn't quite as bad as it sounds, see the discussion between me and Thegreatdr on Talk:2003 Pacific typhoon season. From that I think we can use the factor between 1 and 10 min speeds to work out the category, at peak (for the infobox) and in the track map.--Nilfanion (talk) 15:07, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Dolly[edit]

I've been working on Hurricane Dolly (1996) in my sandbox lately, and I was wondering if this damage was directly from Dolly, and should be included in the article, or if it wasn't part of Dolly. If it was from Dolly, it will help so much, it's got damage totals and stuff for the rain in Texas. íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal) 14:32, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well thank you for "accepting" me. I was starting to get the feeling you were annoyed before. Well, Andrew & Charley were my favorites. Guidelines for minor storms[edit]

Hink I think I've worked out an idea on how to differentiate GA from A class with storms with insignificant impact. To use two examples: Tropical Storm Ana (2003) and Tropical Storm Zeta (2005). Both are GA-standard articles (apart from some minor things in Ana) and appear to have exhaustive impact details. However Ana uses the TCR as its only source, whereas Zeta makes extensive use of the Discussions, critiquing the NHC forecast. Perhaps thats the subtle difference we should look for in the GA/A divide, what do you think?--Nilfanion (talk) 16:28, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah OK, lets bring it up on the project page. Sure thing on the SAmerican cyclones. If its a named Atlantic/EPac storm it is already available on Commons it will be at Image:name_year_track.png (like Image:Katrina 2005 track.png). If it is an unnamed storm the year/number is what I will need and if its a TD a link to the TCR (they will take longer, they are not in the best track). I already have the track for Catarina I'll get that up soon.--Nilfanion (talk) 16:41, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is doable. I can make a track map for any arbitrary set of storms without that much difficulty, but I need the listing of which storms you want. Probably best way for you to do that is to give me the year and ID number, check against the HURDAT to make sure you get the correct ones.--Nilfanion (talk) 17:22, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll get onto it. Two things though, I think it would probably be best to show Catarina separately due to it being separate from the Atlantic canes, that would allow their tracks to be shown more clearly. The other is I wouldn't count Beta, it struck a Columbian island near Nicaragua not South America.--Nilfanion (talk) 10:13, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
True on that, but if you want to be nitpicky, Guadeloupe is part of France, so Hurricane Cleo should be included in the Europe list... I've realised a formatting issue and would like your opinion before I upload to commons.--Nilfanion (talk) 20:16, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've emailed a rough copy of the output to you, with a couple comments.--Nilfanion (talk) 01:31, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The hurricane tracks are at Image:South American hurricane tracks.jpg and Catarina is at Image:Catarina 2004 track.png.--Nilfanion (talk) 13:50, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem and don't worry about it; I've set up a subpage for that kind of request in future. After all if its a "List of article" it would probably benefit from a track map. I'll look over the article (leave the metrication to you, lol).--Nilfanion (talk) 17:51, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, *grumbles* missed out any others?--Nilfanion (talk) 19:56, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2005 Atlantic ACE[edit]

I think there is a dissagreement about sub-tropical ACE. see Talk:2005 Atlantic hurricane season statistics. Tell me your thoughts on it. I think the way they have it now is wrong.--Lionheart Omega 23:35, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hink Please Help[edit]

I did exactly what you asked and i did it to the minor article about Tropical Storm Alex (1998). It was a fish storm(8 years ago) so if i f'ed anything up it wouldn's be the end of the world. Now i researched all of my information and wrote a great article about it and wanted your opinion before someone changed it. Now i am kind of angry that my article which is better and more informative than the article that preceeded it is being replaced with the original again. I will replace my article with his over and over again until i die or you tell me mine sucks.--O-TOWN'S AT

TD9 in 2001[edit]

Delaware 'canes[edit]

Hink can you double check the storms you want for that list, you want 1894 #10; there were only 7 storms that year. I presume you mean #5 but if you have made an error like that you could have made more. Also what do you want this time? A zoomed -in one of Delaware? Thanks--Nilfanion (talk) 15:19, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh and I've uploaded another version of the Global track to the FPC (due to some comments), can you say which you prefer?--Nilfanion (talk) 15:38, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The track is in the article. I'm not sure how useful it is really…--Nilfanion (talk) 20:15, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What could work is if it consists only of storms that passed into the state or close to it. However that would require a bit more research.--Nilfanion (talk) 20:20, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is the new Delaware map a bit better? I think so. Could you double check your quality table to make sure its current as well thanks.--Nilfanion (talk) 13:00, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tampa Bay Hurricane of 1848[edit]

Hi Hurricanehink,

While editng the Largo, Florida, I became intrigued with the "Great Gale of 1848," aka the Tampa Bay hurricane of 1848. I started an article based on information at hand. I was wondering if you could guide me to source material to improve the article.

1840-1849 Atlantic hurricane seasons says the storm hit near present day Sarasota, Florida. Fuller, in his St. Petersburg and its People, says the storm parelleled the coast. Can you illuminate me on this. Thanks.User:Mikereichold | User_talk:Mikereichold 17:34, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the source link. Unless I find compelling information, I'll have to do as your suggest. I don't know if Fuller had a solid basis for his assertion or was BSing. I'll keep digging. The sources I've seen have been based on first or second hand accounts. The information is probably sitting on the shelves of some historical society, under heavy guard. Cheers, and thanks again. WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #180 JANUARY 8 - 15, 1995

Possible Tropical Cyclone in the Mediterranean Sea: A low pressure system formed near 38N 14E on 13 January. The system moved east through 14 January, then it turned south on 15 January. As it turned, it took on the satellite appearance of a tropical cyclone, including an eye embedded inside a well- defined convective band. At the end of the summary period, the system was drifting south along 20E west of the coast of Greece.

The exact structure of the system is uncertain. No upper air observations are available near the center. Surface observations indicate air temperatures of 45-60 F (7-16 C) along with sea surface temperatures of 51-62 F (11-17 C). There is insufficient data to tell whether the system actually acquired full tropical cyclone characteristics.

There are also no reports from close to the center once the eye formed. During the initial development, ship DBBH reported 60 kt winds and a 992.7 mb pressure at 0600 UTC 14 January and 58 kt winds and a 992.5 mb pressure 6 hr later. Based on this and the satellite appearance, maximum sustained winds are estimated at 65-70 kt (assuming that the system actually acquired full trop- ical characteristics).

Tropical/subtropical cyclones are uncommon in the Mediterranean. Such systems are known to have occurred in September 1947, September 1969, Janu- ary 1982, and September 1983, and there are probably others that are less documented. Further documentation can be found in an article by Rene Mayengon in the Mariners Weather Log in 1984 and an article by Ernest and Matson in Weather in 1983.

I've uploaded 2 gif and 4 jpg images of the system to anonymous ftp on squall.met.fsu.edu in directory pub/jack. These are courtesy of the Meteosat- 5 archive at the University of Nottingham, UK. A special thanks to Jay Brei- denbach of the NWS Office of Hydrology for alerting me to this storm!

WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #181 JANUARY 15 - 22, 1995

Possible Tropical Cyclone in the Mediterranean Sea: At the start of the summary period, the possible tropical cyclone was drifting south along 20E west of the coast of Greece. The system continued south early on 16 January, then it assumed a south-southwest track later that day. This tracked continued until the system crossed the coast of Libya late on 17 January. The cyclone dissipated over land the next day.

I've received additional data on the storm thanks to Juergen Gerpott of the Deutscher Wetterdienst. The ship DBBH reported in the last summary is the German research vessel "Meteor", which was taking hourly observations and daily rawinsondes as the storm developed nearby. Maximum sustained winds were 73 kt at 1400 UTC 14 January with a minimum pressure of 990.6 mb one hr before (with 72 kt winds). Satellite imagery indicated that strong convection was forming near the center at this time, but the eye had not yet developed. Air temperatures from the "Meteor" during the storm ranged from 45-50 F (7-10 C) with sea surface temperatures of 61 F (16 C).

The only land station data available is from Sirte, Libya, which reported 29 kt sustained winds at 0000 UTC 18 January during the landfall.

Based on available observations and satellite data, the system reached a peak intensity of 75-80 kt early on 16 January when the eye was most embedded in convection. Steady weakening then began, and the cyclone is estimated to have been a rapidly weakening tropical storm at landfall.

Sorry to clog your talk page up with this, but I thought you might like to see it :P That is from Jack Beven's Weekly summaries which was forwarded to me by Gary Padgett.--Nilfanion (talk) 20:52, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #3[edit]

Number 3, August 6, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list.

"Tropical Storm Lee was probably national news at the time, depending on where it went and what it did. Millions of people knew about it."

Storm of the month

Severe Tropical Storm Bilis approaching Taiwan
Severe Tropical Storm Bilis approaching Taiwan
Severe Tropical Storm Bilis was a damaging tropical storm that caused significant damage to areas of southeastern China, the Philippines and Taiwan. The fourth named storm of the 2006 Pacific typhoon season formed to the east of the Philippines on July 8 and moved towards Taiwan, strengthening as it did so. It reached its peak strength of 110 km/h (70 mph) on July 13, shortly before it made its first landfall on northern Taiwan. Bilis then made a second landfall in Fujian, China on July 14 after officials evaucated over 1 million residents from the areas in the storm's path. The remnant lasted for several days after landfall and brought heavy rain to inland China. The most significant damage occurred in Hunan, where heavy flooding and mudslides destroyed over 31,000 homes and killed 345. Despite never reaching typhoon strength, the storm was responsible for $2.5 billion in damage and at least 625 fatalities in total.

Other tropical cyclone activity

There were 10 other tropical cyclones worldwide in July, with activity in all 4 northern hemisphere basins.

  • In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall on Nantucket on July 21 before bringing rain to Atlantic Canada.
  • In the East Pacific, Hurricane Bud was a Category 3 hurricane that formed on July 10 and dissipated on July 15.
  • Hurricane Carlotta twice became a minimal hurricane before degenerating into a remnant low on July 16.
  • Hurricane Daniel reached Category 4 strength and was predicted to make landfall in Hawaii before it dissipated on July 26.
  • Tropical Storm Emilia brought tropical storm-force winds to southern Baja California on July 26 and was forecast to become a hurricane but this did not occur.
  • Tropical Storm Fabio formed late on July 31 but did not last long in the face of strong shear.
  • In the West Pacific,Typhoon Ewiniar (Ester) formed on June 29 to the east of the Philippines, it reached Category 4 strength before making landfall in South Korea on July 10 as a tropical storm. It killed at least 36 people.
  • Typhoon Kaemi (Glenda) formed on July 2 and passed over Taiwan before dissipating over mainland China on July 26. It brought heavy rain to Taiwan and the Philippines and killed at least 32 people in China.
  • Typhoon Prapiroon (Henry) formed on July 28 but did not reach tropical storm strength until August.
  • In the North Indian Ocean, Tropical Storm 03B formed on June 30 near the east Indian coast before making landfall on the Orissa coast on July 2.

Useful sources of tropical cyclone information

The following organizations provide helpful information for writing about tropical cyclones, both past and present.

In his April Tropical Cyclone Summary, Gary Padgett stated that he will extensively reference Wikipedia in his future summaries. I have communicated with him and he has stated that he is "very much interested in cooperating" with us. He has also provided me with a copy of Jack Beven's weekly summaries (covering 1991-1996). Mike (1950) & Kendra (1966)[edit]

Mike is a mystery. I became aware of it a year or two ago, but have not found any notation outside the hurricane reanalysis candidate spreadsheet I received from a forecaster from NHC. It's not in the season wrapup like Kendra was, and even the Kendra wrap-up was devoid of any detail, hence someone's presumption that Kendra was a tropical depression. I only know both facts from personal communication from NHC. I wish I could give you a notation from an internet or published source, but I haven't found one yet. Thegreatdr 21:04, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll attempt to find a reference of some sort, don't worry...others will have similar curiosity...I still don't have all the facts myself. It may be years until the hurricane reanalysis gets to 1950. The active 2005 season halted progress for one full year since the committee couldn't meet due to lack of an off-season and many storm write-ups. This next winter should see more progress since they have twice the hurricane specialists now. Thegreatdr 21:12, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The next step was supposed to extend the track database back to roughly 1800, but little movement has occurred on this project as of yet, though some people have organized the related information more efficiently over the intervening 5 years since it was discussed. Thegreatdr 15:37, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the heads up on the Chenoweth paper, btw. I'm glad with his vast database he was able to correct numerous historical inaccuracies. Thegreatdr 22:26, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hawaii Hurricanes[edit]

I left a message on the talk page of Hawaii canes, that I'm guessing no one saw, so I'll just ask you upfront. Should I add a deaths table and a storms per month table, such as the tables you have in your latest lists? And how would I get a hold of one of those really awesome track maps that you used to show the storms that effected a certain area? And (sorry for all the questions) but how do you make the references all fancy and such as you do on your articles? →Cyclone1 03:36, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request on Commons[edit]

Hink, I've requested the deletion of the GIBBS image of the subtrop storm of 2005 (due to the existence of a MODIS pic). Can you pop over to Commons and express your opinion? Might be worth logging onto Commons every day and seeing if you have messages there - its quite likely that you will see deletion requests from me (with the work I'm doing) :P--Nilfanion (talk) 23:23, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you don't have to. :P Just easier for things if you check over there (the rules associatated with deletions...). There will probably be cases where its a more blatant delete.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:35, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh Hink a more important issue. I'm not sure if you have noticed or not when uploading images. The image summary is only utilised if its the first upload of the image. If its a new upload of the image, it works just like a normal edit summary in practice. For instance at commons:Image:Tropical Storm Ernesto (2000).JPG, when you uploaded a MODIS image over the full disk image (that sounds familiar :P) the summary was still that for the GOES image, until I changed it just now. Remember when you upload a new version of an image you need to update the image summary manually.--Nilfanion (talk) 18:03, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry about it, its a minor issue. However I'd appreciate it if you make my alternate life easier. The Commons categories are undergoing serious revision at the moment, see my comment on the project talk page. Probably easier to explain whats going on on IRC or something.--Nilfanion (talk) 18:27, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually in the long term what I plan to do, once I have the cat structure reorganised is to upload a ton of new images appropriately. For example, the HPC rainfall pics - I'll get them all on commons even if they aren't used yet. Moving it all to Commons is very beneficial as it enables other wikis to use it (as well the fact observing 100% of the images finds copyvios...)--Nilfanion (talk) 07:50, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Assessing things[edit]

ACE[edit]

I am interested in working on calculations on the ACEs for the season articles, particularly Southern Hemisphere seasons, but I could do any season article if I wanted to. What things like formulas do I have to know to work on those calculations? I am sort of good with numbers!!!!!! :) RaNdOm26 15:59, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to barge in, but ACE only works with 1-minute sustained winds as far as I know. Chacor 16:01, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I thought JTWC uses 1-min winds in their tracks. I could use them. RaNdOm26 16:10, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The JTWC is unofficial, and thus any ACE value would be unofficial, thus indirectly violating WP:NOR. Chacor 16:11, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
More to the point, ACE is only used by NOAA; its an inappropriate thing to talk about in the southern hemisphere.--Nilfanion (talk) 16:13, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but you still haven't answered the main question yet. RaNdOm26 16:14, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The point is, there's no ACE calculations to be done for the S.H. storms. Chacor 16:17, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Geez, can't you actually read what I am saying? I said that I could do any season article, and I want to know what formula I could use to calculate ACE. What part don't you understand, Chacor? RaNdOm26 16:20, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Read Accumulated cyclone energy for the formula and look at Talk:2006 Pacific hurricane season/ACE calcs to see how it works. (You must be happy with all this Hink :P)--Nilfanion (talk) 16:22, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Kind of understand a little bit in the Accumulated cyclone energy, though I hope someone helps me out what to do? To Chacor, could you PLEASE read carefully, because I get annoyed with people who don't read the whole thing. RaNdOm26 16:29, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to advertise the nomination in the wikiproject's noticeboard. It would be a shame to fail the FLC due to lack of votes when there are no objections standing. Regards -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 17:05, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Emmy (1976)[edit]

Well. This is going well. I've eliminated all the Frances stuff for just a plain Emmy article, i guess no chance you can find any information. Every search engine shows about the Emmy awards though. Here: [4]. Reply.Mitchazenia 17:56, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did and even Hurricane Emmy (1976).No luck.Mitchazenia 21:09, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Quality-wise: 1-10: What is it?
I remember reading somewhere that they wanted an Emmy article on Wikipedia, if i can find it. Hold on.Mitchazenia 20:14, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that link; it can help fill the Impact section. I think the article is publishable now, but Chacor and others may disagree. CrazyC83 21:46, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is there an El Nino or not?[edit]

Hey Hink, I thought I'd once be leaving a message to you again, but I've been worn out by several WPac, EPac, and Atlantic storms including their annual seasons articles. But I have a question although you may have already gone through this a few times, the Atlantic hurricane season seems to very slow in progress cause its already end of August and I soon going back to school, but if it was 2005 nor, we'd already been seeing Katrina in New Orleans and possibly with Maria on the doorsteps, but now, we only have Ernesto. Also the EPac seems to be more active then the 2005 EPac season. I explained several times to other users about an El Nino arrival, but several say there is no El Nino and while some say there is an El Nino on the warpath. Especially Chacor, who is always annoying to me, forces everyone to shut up. Nonetheless, can you explain if where is an El Nino coming or not cause it has kept my heading spinning and now at several nights, I can't sleep very well; inlcuding the IAU having to boot Pluto away from the solar system. FEMA[edit]

Hey Hink, a followup to the WikiProject discussion. The FEMA site mentions the existence of declarations waaaay back Camille for instance. However, there is no information; do you have a source for the actual details like "the counties of .... are eligible for assistance"?--Nilfanion (talk) 10:52, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Typhoon Karen[edit]

Uhh Hi well I'll get straight to the point. Some people said i should contact you after some major changes i did to Typhoon Karen. People said it might be start class now and that i should get your thoughts on it. Thanks for any comments Hurricane-Inu 02:23, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1969 Pacific hurricane season (Found an interesting document)[edit]

I was browsing through the older MWR reports (the ones still explicitly linked as NOAA archived documents), and found a PDF file for the 1969 Pacific hurricane season, with info on all storms as well as all pictures. Should I break the "1969 Pacific hurricane season" article off of the 1950-69 article because of this document, make a main article for the season and link the 1969 section of 50-69 to it, or just let it be?

(PS: There was also a document of the 1968 Pacific hurricane season too, but this one didn't have all the pictures, namely Annette, Estelle, Joanne, Kathleen, Madeline, Simone, and Tara were missing). Jake52 My talk 06:32, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit count[edit]

Do you know how to determine of the number of edits a user makes in Wikipedia, or is there a software that can keep track of edit counts? RaNdOm26 10:40, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CharChar[edit]

Normally, I'd just send this to you in another form, but what more do you want. The only thing missing is the extensive damage at Orlando International Airport. And what's with the change in attitude.StormChaser666 22:35, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also can you review the edits to the Impact part in Florida please. StormChaser666 23:19, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I added the Power stuff WITH A LINK!!! Also the part about the canceled flights. Btw, I know what the wind speeds were when the storm came ashore cause I was there, but I won't have a link. Can I post them? Also, the hurricane made a direct hit on Islamorado, or however you spell that. That could be included. People are complaining about not having enough info on the talk page. I know the info, just don't have any links so...StormChaser666 23:25, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SORRY SORRY SORRY--> TALKING ABOUT ERNESTO!!!

Just noticed that the Plantation Key is wrong. If anything it was key largo and that dumb name in my previous post. Plantation caught the eye too but you can't just use that one island. Not fair to the rest. StormChaser666 00:30, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean where did I get the 147 flights? The link went right too it, I fought with it for an hour too until I finally got it. Maybe they changed the website...StormChaser666 00:30, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hope you didn't disappear but look at the part I updated now!!! Ernie isn't harmless!!StormChaser666 01:07, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
SORRY, the link never worked, it was missing a / so.--now try for the 3rd time.StormChaser666 01:22, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Are you saying I should format the pre-1900 storms like this: Storm #: A t.s./extra t.s... or just this: A t.s/extra t.s... Hello32020 21:39, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And therefore remove "as a t.s/extrat.s" at the end Hello32020 21:42, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
