A Soldier's Rosary[edit]

Alex started today and this is his first article. It has a markup issue I can't fix. It also has been nominated for speedy deletion. I have since shown him how to create a sandbox. Can you help fix this article? TeriEmbrey (talk) 20:37, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

To my talk page watchers: WP:Co-op[edit]

Hey talk page watchers, just wanted to let you know that the Individual Engagement Grant we are working on, Reimagining Wikipedia Mentorship, finally has a makeshift landing page at WP:Co-op. I've posted an update on our first month's progress. Feel free to check it out, and let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thanks folks. I am not an editor. I need help fixing an erroneous photo.[edit]

Thanks in advance for your time.

I was on the Northridge, Los Angeles page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northridge,_Los_Angeles and I noticed that the photo they have at the bottom (under noteworthy residents) depicts the wrong person. I don't even know why the Northridge, Los Angeles page even needs a photo of a completely irrelevant MLB player just because he was from there--perhaps a photo of Jason Collins, the first openly gay NBA player, would be more relevant--but in any case, the photo on the page shows Daniel Nava of the Boston Red Sox, but is labeled Ryan Kalish, formerly of the Boston Red Sox. Daniel Nava, at least according to his page, is from a different place in CA.

I tried to fix this myself but I couldn't even figure out the photo specs and so I edited the caption of the photo to say there was an error in the hopes that someone would fix it, but it just got deleted.

Can you help me take care of this? 23.242.143.92 (talk) 05:10, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I've checked out the issue with the photo, and I agree that there was a mistake made on the identity of the image. I've removed the image and replaced it with one of Collins per your suggestion. If you ever come across an issue like that in the future, it's best not to write out the issue directly on the article, but to use the article's talk page instead if you're not sure how to go about fixing it. Thanks! I, JethroBT drop me a line 07:37, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Thank you so much! 23.242.143.92 (talk) 02:08, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

John Robinson (aviator) article[edit]

Do you think this is DYK worthy? @‎StormBattalion3414 has been working on expanding it out with a biography on Robinson from PMML's collection. TeriEmbrey (talk) 14:39, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

@TeriEmbrey, StormBattalion3414: Nice work! It looks like the 5x expansion requirement has been met. There are a few issues that caught my attention:
  • The writing seems to be in a narrative style in some places. Article sections should be able to be read on their own without a great deal of contextualization from other sections, so under the section "Ethiopia," opening with But Robinson's life was about to shift course doesn't read very well from an encyclopedic standpoint.
  • Avoid colloquial phrases. Phrases like "was looking for payback" can be replaced with something more formal.
  • The tone can be a little less sensational in some places. I expect to see phrases like Watching that plane take off created Robinson's dream to fly in a novel, not in an encyclopedia. Other phrases that could use some work are Robinson was determined as ever to get back into the air..., Wanting to prove beyond a doubt that people of African descent can fly..., and ...having never forgotten the flight he witnessed John Moisant conduct in his hometown... I think these details can be incorporated, but this phrasing will definitely catch the attention of the reviewer.
So, in the remaining time, I'd recommend trying to address some of these issues. This book on Robinson can be searched through using Google Books, and this news article from 1935 interviewing Robinson on a bombing at Aduwa might be useful. I, JethroBT drop me a line 20:45, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Also, if you are too busy to make revisions for the DYK deadline on Aug. 1st, I can make these fixes, but please let me know. I, JethroBT drop me a line 20:46, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
I made a few changes today. Alex will be in again next week, too. It still needs work though. Can you work on it a bit? TeriEmbrey (talk) 21:02, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Of course, I'll work on it later tonight and tomorrow. Thanks, I, JethroBT drop me a line 21:27, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
@TeriEmbrey, StormBattalion3414: I've finished working on the article and have nominated it for a DYK here. I'll be keeping an eye on it. The article can definitely be expanded a lot with two full biographies, this book, and this LA Times article about Robinson if there is interest in doing so. By the way, I will be busy in early August with Wikimania, some friends visiting from Japan for a few days, and my work with the Co-op (the mentorship space I am building), and will not be able to devote a lot of time to assisting with article development. I'll be more fully able to help out later in August. I, JethroBT drop me a line 01:50, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
