Referencing[edit]

Would you have any objection to using the 'reflist' system at Irish International Exhibition (1907). I added my minor contrib. with this system and assumed it was correctly ref'd, but the cite did not appear because of formatting incompatibility. Reverted[edit]

Please take care to look at dates and years. Fyodor Schechtel, who died in 1926, had nothing to do with the pavilion built for the 1939 exhibition (which was designed by V. A. Ashastin). The 1923 exhibition was held at a different location (present-day Gorky Park). Schechtel's pavilion represented not Turkmenistan but Turkestan, i.e. Central Asia in general.

"Several brightly coloured buildings" at the 1901 Glasgow exhibition need more research. All contemporary images that I saw don't look like "brightly coloured" - just ordinary log buildings, but then of course it's black and white photographs. Schechtel's own drafts show quite a bunch of colours, but these were dark colours (dark crimson, purple, dark blue) mixed with natural untreated wood. NVO (talk) 01:06, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I saw you recently added Category:Orphaned articles to Brogramming using HotCat. That category and other maintenance categories listed under Category:Wikipedia maintenance categories sorted by month should not be added directly to articles; instead you should use the corresponding maintenance templates such as {{Orphan}}. Resolved White (Mayflower Passenger)[edit]

Please correct the changes you did to my styling of references back to what they were. Yours is not the recommended style and for good reason because and it causes problems with the programming and the articles, especially when other editors come in to it with their own styling of referencing as well. What happens is that the article is a combination of referencing styles and it looks a complete mess. They also edit (in between) the other references and that too causes problems. There was no reason to change them. Your preferred method does not work on Wikipedia very well. It is also against Wikipedia policy guidelines to change other editor's valid references.

Bronze sculptures[edit]

Thanks for joining in this work! I don't myself think the whole category should be diffused to national subs. The current four are probably enough. I've become aware that many of the more recent ones exist in several copies, which the articles are not good at saying (especially the Smithsonian ones). Exposition Internationale de l'Est de la France[edit]

For Exposition Internationale de l'Est de la France, there are two 1909 categories and the Architecture category, but no Exposition category. In fact, Exposition is a disambiguation page, with Trade fair as the relevant category. Was the Exposition Internationale de l'Est de la France a trade fair? I hope you see that I am puzzled by the fact that the three categories for this article do not cover the reason there is an article, there was an Exposition. Looking at other Exposition articles, I find the same thing, unless, of course, it was a World's Fair.

Such a good question. And I have been inconsistent in adding a navbar for World's Fairs, but not adding it to such an appropriate World's fair category. I came across it as a redlink from the List of World's Fairs webpage which suggests a World's fair.

Art exhibition would be a good additional category (but not sufficient in itself)

It wasn't a trade fair.

I am not in favor of listing painters of Bologna as Artists and Painters. The Bolognese painters category can be made a subcategory of Bolognese artists. All Bolognese painters are Artists, but there are some artists (sculptors, scenographers, actors, manuscript illuminators, and engravers for example) that are not painters. Is this because I had been refining 'People from Bologna' to 'Artists of Bologna'? I was doing this in good faith whilst diffusing 'People from Bologna' which did not then have 'Category:Bolognese artists' as a sub category. When I, recently, became aware of 'Category:Bolognese painters' I then made it a sub category of 'Category:Artists of Bolgona', giving it, for the first time, an anchor to 'Category:People in Bologna'

(A similar category for 'Category:Parmesan painters' handles it by being a direct subcategory of 'Category:People from Parma'.)

Often nationality and citizenship are the same, but not necessarily.

This page: Template:Infobox person/doc might be helpful - it has a lot of information about how to use/populate the Infobox fields.

For nationality it says "May be used instead of citizenship (below) or vice versa in cases where any confusion could result. Should only be used with citizenship when they somehow differ. ....."
and for citizenship it says "Country of legal citizenship, if different from nationality."

For Volga Tatars I don't think that either nationality or citizenship is right as it doesn't relate to a country/sovereign state but is an identity that applies across many countries.

There is the option within an infobox to add Ethnicity: "Ethnicity. Please be sure to support with a citation from a reliable source, in the article body." which might be one approach if it's citable

As Tatarstan is a Russian Oblast I think that must make him of Russian nationality - because Russia is a soverign state and Tatarstan isn't (either now or during his lifetime). The nationality field could be ommitted from the info box, and then information about his Tatar background incorporated into the body of the article? Hi Icarusgeek. Just to make a correction. Syria had seceded from the United Arab Republic 1961. For a long time only Egypt, under Nasser was called the United Arab Republic, apparently until 1971 according to the article. I'm afraid this isn't something that I know very much about. Articles that I have created tend to get high on search engines - but I think this is more than by luck than judgement. (Because I tend to write articles that are often not super documented on the web) However I would think that these things would almost certainly help:

adding pertinent categories
adding links to your article from other articles. Click on 'What links here' in the navbar to see what there is already.
adding links from your article to others. When you do this the original creator gets an alert which draws their attention to your article. They create links to your article or may dive in and help in other ways
links to other language wikipedias. More information here: Help:Interlanguage links
improving your article generally. This Wikipedia:The perfect article has information about writing the perfect article

Err - yes I have to agree with that!

I've started adding the sportspeople categories under Punjab, India in an attempt to be consistent with Punjab, Pakistan. So whilst that means less inconsistency P,I <==> P,P at the same time as creating inconsitency amongst occupations under people from Punjab, India - in this case specifically under Amritsar.

When clicking through looking for spotspeople there did seem to be a lot of politicians. And although I considered adding Category:Politicians from Amritsar district and Category:Politicians from Amritsar when I saw that I didn't. Mostly because I am nowhere near finished with the sportspeople yet and I'd lose track. (And partly because looming wikibreak)

Plus 40 in subcats.

I didn't even look at the subcats - my fault. I might do the politicians one myself, if I can convince myself that this level of detail is actually useful. You see, there would then be a case for BJP politicians from Amritsar, INC politicians from Amritsar etc ... and every other town and district in that state. And Indian politicians often change party (there are cases of five parties during a career). The categories shown at the bottom of articles will explode and I suspect practically no-one but a dedicated editor even looks at them.

Deleting categories[edit]

Hi. If you want to delete a category like Category:1996 Singaporean telvision seasons, please don't just blank it, as that just causes work for other people. Cut out the middle man and either tag it with {{db-self}} if you're the only editor to have edited it, or {{db-g6}} if there's an obvious screwup like a typo. Either would have worked in this case. Hi Icarusgeek - I checked the web-page before making my spelling correction at Portuguese colonial exhibition of Repubic to Republic.
I cannot see, and the search facility cannot find, any use of "republic" on this page - but it finds 16 uses of Republic, so the search appears to be working. - Could I ask you to review, and (unless you are seeing different things to me) revert, thanks - Arjayay (talk) 14:43, 12 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm using the actual HTML title: <title>Portugal > History and Events > Date Table > Second Repubic</title> rather than something in the user visible page. I think that this the actual encoding used for searching waybacking etc. as anything designed for human readability is not necessarily machine parsable. I definately could be wrong - which is what led to the talk page: Talk:Portuguese colonial exhibition item rather than just assuming that. And also why I didn't add a 'sic' to the title.

No, no! I meant nothing ulterior. At Bridgette Andersen, you added two "American" categorizations (Category:American child models and Category:20th-century American actresses). The category means nationality.

And surprisingly for me, I do remember this edit. The page didn't have an explicit nationality listed, but she was born in the US.
