[edit] Breaking links with en/em dash warring
Thank you for correcting my editing error in Vanity Fair (magazines). Please note, however, that I was not involved in changing en dashes to em dashes or vice versa. I changed hyphens to en dashes, which I don't believe is controversial, although obviously it should not be done in a way that damages links. Anomalocaris (talk) 02:56, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. I have no strong opinion on en dash v/s en dash disputes (I just feel strongly that making changes that destroy links to articles and media is inappropriate). I'm glad you're aware of the problem. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 03:10, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Mammy's Cupboard
Nice job taking pictures of the place. When I read about it in Road Trip USA and looked for more sources for it, I was surprised that it didn't already have an article. Wikipedia still has room to grow. SL93 (talk) 00:25, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. It was closed when we drove past, hence I got no interior photos. Thanks for the article, a needed filling of a gap in Wikipedia. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 00:30, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
[edit] I see that you have been looking at
[1] in terms of copyright and possible moving to commons. That photo is from the Bob Perrone collection. He is Rene Paul Chambellan's grandson, which I believe gives him as much or more right than anyone else to discuss copyright. He allowed me to use that image (and a bunch of others) on wikipedia and elsewhere else that I wanted (I have another large project that uses that sort of thing [2]) with the understanding that by doing so he was turning that particular images loose. Copyright free. You still might not want to move it to commons, but that is the background. I can answer any other questions that I can. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 18:00, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Speedy deletion nomination of File:USMailbox1909.jpg
A tag has been placed on File:USMailbox1909.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. - Pages like these are relics of the early days of Commons before the image description appeared on local wikis. Removing the duplicate descriptions is a simple matter of housekeeping; delete away. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 12:12, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Pablo Casals
Thanks for your fast revert of the anonymous move to Pau Casals. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, and I was just trying to puzzle out how to fix it. Milkunderwood (talk) 22:47, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yesterday I had added a number of recordings, but had not thought to look at the Discussion tab - had no idea there had been a long-standing war going on about his name. What confused me in the latest move that you reverted was that although my additions on the main page were still there, my edits were missing from the History tab. Still don't understand what was going on there. Milkunderwood (talk) 00:01, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- The editor tried to do a unilateral "move" by "copy and paste" rather than the page move feature. "Copy and paste" attempts to "move" pages are inappropriate since they lose all the article edit history and attribution, thus that would have been reverted even if there had been consensus to retitle the page (which in this case there hasn't been.) Cheers, Infrogmation (talk)
- I appreciate the explanation - I'm still learning all these tricks to make WP do what you hope might happen. :-) Milkunderwood (talk) 00:13, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Casals
I was the anonymous user that made the changes, and I think are absolutely appropriate, because there is no such thing as Spanish Catalan, Catalonia is different culture and Pau never identified himself as Spanish, please answer me because this is a serious matter --Polmas (talk) 20:49, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- Good day. That article has long been subject to people unilaterally removing all mention of "Catalonia" on one side, and other people removing all mention of "Spain" on the other side. Per discussion on the talk page, it was agreed that both Catalonia and Spain should be mentioned. (He was born in the part of Catalonia within Spain at the time, as opposed to being a Catalan born within France, no? ) Discussion of suggested improvements to the article should go on the article talk page. Thanks for your input. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 21:02, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Infrogmation!
Do you have access to the library now? The Advocate published "Inmate plagiarism suit dismissed" and printed it on February 13, 1991. If you could get a copy of it, that would be wonderful! Thank you WhisperToMe (talk) 08:46, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Question
Hey, Infrogmation! I saw that you were a bureaucrat/administrator here, so I was just wondering if you might be able to answer a question I had. The thing is, I'm an admin on a different wiki, and another admin on the same wiki posted a question to the rest of the admins asking if there was a URL that can be used to show any user their current number of edits on the wiki. On our wiki, there's a page called Special:Editcount that conveys that information (I don't think Wikipedia has a page like this though), so another admin advised him to use this URL: http://_________.com/Special:Editcount/Username. That URL would achieve the desired result, but one would have to constantly put the username of the specific user at the end of the URL when posting it on that user's talk page, so my goal was to come up with a way to avoid that; almost to create something you could post on any user's talk page without changing any part of it and still get the desired result. I came up with this: {{fullurl:Special:Editcount/{{BASEPAGENAME}}}}, this way, one could just post the coding on the talk page of the desired user and the returned URL would automatically direct the user to their respective edit count. This worked successfully for every other user whose talk page I tested the coding on (without saving the page, of course); the only problem is that the user he wanted to do this for has an "*" both at the beginning and the end of their username (the second asterisk isn't a problem, just the first), meaning that instead of being returned as:
http://_________.com/Special:Editcount/*User*
it gets returned as:
{{fullurl:Special:Editcount/
- User*}}
and doesn't take anyone anywhere, because it's just the raw coding. So I was just wondering if you knew of any way to circumvent this problem (aside from just telling him to post "http://_________.com/Special:Editcount/*User*" on the user's talk page, which isn't the end of the world, but is, of course, what I was trying to get around in the first place), maybe by putting some other form of coding that I'm not aware of somewhere in the existing coding or something. Any light you may be able to shed on this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
69.204.38.3 (talk) 23:18, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, that's some technical stuff I haven't worked with. You might ask on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard or perhaps Meta]. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 17:32, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
-
- I was actually able to find a solution that fixed the problem; just had to add {{urlencode:}} to the coding. Thank you for your help and time.

[edit] Superdome Photo
Hi Infrogmation,
I noticed you removed the updated photo of the Superdome from its wiki page. The picture I provided was taken during the exterior renovation and re-skin of the Superdome that was performed by Gibbs Construction. I am a Project Engineer for that company and received permission to load our photo in place of the picture that featured the aged skin it used to have. I am sad that it was taken down and once again replaced with such a dated photograph of the building. I am a huge fan of our stadium would love to see a nice picture that reflects some of the $336 million in renovations that have recently taken place. Please let me know what would be required to allow me to load any of the many attractive pictures I have at my disposal of the Superdome's new exterior that were taken during construction. Also, by what means does Wikipedia verify if a picture is copyrighted? The picture I loaded was saved directly from the construction photos on our server as a jpg file.
If all else fails, perhaps you could use some of your photography skills to capture a new picture of the arena at sunset?
Thanks, nwill21 - Superdome fan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nwill21 (talk • contribs) 05:00, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
- The photo File:Louisiana Superdome.jpg, which you uploaded as your own photograph and licensed with yourself as copyright holder, was deleted on Commons as a copyright violation after an OTRS complaint sent to Commons from the photographer Michael Palumbo [3] [4]. It was deleted by Commons administrator Commons:User:Túrelio. If you have questions about this particular deletion which I have not answered, you may wish to contact them.
- If you were not the photographer and copyright holder of that photo, you uploaded it under a false claim and false license. You state here that you "received permission" to load the photo; that is not what you stated on the photo description. Uploading copyrighted work that is not your own needs explicit permission from the copyright holder. The copyright holder is usually the original photographer, unless somone else or some company has made an agreement with the photographer to purchase not just limited reuse of their photos but the copyright as well. For info on how to upload other people's copyright work under free licenses with their permission, see Commons:Commons:OTRS. -- Infrogmation (talk) 13:24, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
After looking into it, you are correct; my appologies to Michael Paulumbo. I was incorrect regarding the ownership of this particulr picture. It's a shame it will not be seen, it was a really good photograph. I'm now on a mission to duplicate it myself. Any laws against taking pictures of the same object from a similar location? :) I dont have your photography skills, but I'll try. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.139.39.110 (talk) 21:52, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
Well I took the time to scout out the position the previous photograph was taken.... Atop the New Orleans Center garage (7th floor). I took this using my iPhone4, and cropped it with MS Photo Editor. Hope everything is acceptable. Please study the picture, there are many differences that prove this is not the same photo, and it is my own. Sorry to cause you more work the first time, hope this one keeps. -Nwill21 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nwill21 (talk • contribs) 23:43, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
- I presume you're talking about File:Superdome from Garage.jpg. It looks fine to me. No, it's fine to take photos from the same location/angle as someone else. (I did get down to Poydras Street last week and took a couple of photos, but the light was in the wrong direction for me to get something good. Good for you doing it first.) [edit] The Second Line (magazine)
Hi Infrogmation,
I've been working on a few NOLA-related articles lately – went to Tulane for undergrad: you can take the girl out of New Orleans, but you can't take the New Orleans out of the girl :) – and I wondered if you could help me out with this one. I've been trying to hunt down as many online sources as possible, but I'm sure the bulk is offline. I noticed you added in the bit about The Second Line to the article on the parade style (way back in 2005!) and thought you might have some additional sources at your disposal. I don't know much about the magazine or the club, but I'd be very happy to learn. Please let me know if you have any leads! Thanks muchly, Accedietalk to me 03:56, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, the bulk is not on line. I first suggested to them putting more material including old back issues online back in the 1990s, and again offered to help doing so after Katrina, but was never taken up on it. I'm glad to see they've finally gotten a start in that direction. I have a fair collection of old back issues. Thanks for getting the article started! [edit] Request for Review
Dear Infrogmation, As someone knowledgeable about New Orleans, would you be willing to review the article I started on Charles L. Dufour? He's better known as "Pie Dufour" to New Orleanians. When I first created this article and requested review (not from anybody with specific knowledge of New Orleans), the notability and references were called into question. I've since upgraded the article significantly. If you believe that this article merits notability, please remove the banner that calls into question notability. If you however also question notability, please suggest what I might do to better address the issue. And, of course, any other edits are most welcome. If you are unable to conduct this review, please suggest how I might obtain a review by someone knowledgeable about New Orleans. Many thanks, Nolabob (talk) 12:57, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
- I took a look and made some small edits. I don't know much about Pie Dufour beyond having read a few of his works and that he certainly is notable in Greater New Orleans and as a writer about New Orleans. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 19:08, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Holy Cross High School (New Orleans)
Hello - I see you removed the deletion notice from Holy Cross High School (New Orleans). I was trying to move Holy Cross High School, New Orleans there, as standard disambiguation, but it wouldn't let me. I thought I was following the directions at WP:RM#Requesting technical moves, where it says: "If the only obstacle to a technical move is a navigation aid (e.g., a redirect or an unnecessary disambiguation page with a minor edit history), you may add the following code to the top of the page that is in the way: {{db-move|page to be moved here|reason for move}} This will list the page for deletion under criterion for speedy deletion G6. If the page is a redirect, place the code above the redirection. ". Is this not a way to make that move happen? Thanks. Dohn joe (talk) 20:27, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you so much to Peridon, who no-wikied my accidental addition of the deletion template to this talk page. Yikes! Dohn joe (talk) 21:07, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
- As I hope you've noticed, I put an explanation of my action on your talk page after I did it. As to moving the page, see Wikipedia:Moving a page and Wikipedia:Requested moves. Especially for pages that have been at locations for some time (as opposed to a newly created obvious typo, for example), I strongly suggest bringing the proposed move up on the article's talk page and waiting for feedback before doing the move. (If there is consensus to retitle the article, I'd be happy to assist with the technical part as an admin if needed.) Thanks for your attention. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 21:31, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
- I did see your note on my page (after I added this section here - sorry for splitting things up unnecessarily). I generally agree with you as to page move protocol, but here it seemed so minor (substituting parentheses for a comma where the vast majority of similar pages also use parentheses) that an official move request seemed like overkill - especially when the directions on the move request page seemed to apply. Was I out of line? Dohn joe (talk) 21:49, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
- I wouldn't call you "out of line"; I just prefer to precede more cautiously when moving long existing articles. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 22:40, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, I fixed the move. You can fix the link to commons. Those links do not show up like the other links so they are more difficult to find and fix. Since any editor can do that, better to leave that for everyone else to cleanup. This might be a good suggestion for a bot. Review page moves and make sure that the commons links in the article are still correct. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:25, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] NOLA H20
Infrogmation -- I heard a rumor that at one time in the last 75 years, water used to exist near the superdome that connected to Lake Pontchartrain. Would this have been Bayou St. John? Or am I way off? Will you kindly suggest a reference where I could do some homework? This elderly gentleman swears that natural water used to exist within this city that has since been dried either naturally or by man. I am having trouble finding evidence... Leroy E. Brown (talk) 00:07, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- For a natural body of water, 75 years ago, no. 175 years ago, certainly; see my comment to your query at talk:Bayou St. John. However in the early 20th century there were many open drainage canals in the city. Actually many are still there, they've just been deepened then covered over -- many major streets with wide neutral grounds like Claiborne Avenue and Broad had open canals, since put out of sight. -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:26, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
This is very interesting information Infrogmation! Thank you!! Just a layman's guess, that these canals were created to harness the Bayou's natural forces. Then again, man is not always so intuitive. So, if these canals are still there, how have they been covered over? Concrete, Iron, dirt? I wonder why they'd cover them. Leroy E. Brown (talk) 18:52, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I think that what I have been babbling about is the New Basin Canal... Leroy E. Brown (talk) 06:55, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
[edit] Ignacio Zaragoza image
I know there has been a lot of documentation on user Billy Hathorn's use of images. And he's blocked, so I can't address this to him directly. I'm working on creating a Wikipedia article for the Zaragoza Birthplace State Historic Site. Firstly, I saw this Google Book link and photo:skip to Page 237 if you can link to this. This is a photo of the Zaragoza statue at the birthplace in Goliad, which is by the site's amphitheater. The only other Zaragosa statue I see in that book is in Dallas. That doesn't mean another doesn't exist in Texas. But here's this Hathorn photo from Commons. It's the exact same statue standing in front of what looks like an amphitheater. And Hathorn has attributed it to San Agustin Plaza in Laredo, Texas. I was just going to request a file name change over on Commons. But it occurred to me that a Texas-based photographer would know whether or not he was in Laredo, or in Goliad. Maybe you can advise on this. I'd like to use the photo. But if the copyright is in question, maybe other action is required. I've not dealt with the copyright issue before. Let me know, thanks. Maile66 (talk) 16:54, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'm in New Orleans, not Texas, and have no personal knowledge about the question, sorry. -- Infrogmation (talk) 20:34, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
[edit] MSU Interview
Dear Infrogmation,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.
Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:02, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
[edit] Non-free rationale for File:PrettyBabyLPBack.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:PrettyBabyLPBack.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. [edit] Jackson Barracks Picture
Thank you for finding the discrepancy in my picture "Jackson Barracks 2012.JPG" linked to Jackson Barracks. I took the Picture on 16 October 2011. I uploaded the picture in February 2012 as "Jackson Barracks 2012". I'm not sure how to change the File name, unless I download another copy. All captions reflect an accurate date taken (as does the time stamp from my camera on the "FILE:" page)... If you have further suggestions, let me now. BrassTacks (talk) 23:17, 22 February 2012 (UTC) It's important to be accurate in historical articles. Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BrassTacks (talk • contribs) 23:25, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for your attention, and thanks for the fine photo. As noted on your talk page, seems all is taken care of. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 00:39, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
