Re Hard Rock templates[edit]

Hi Chris, I think that would be a great idea, as this is my first ever wikiproject. Thanks. DavidJJJ 06:48, 8 July 2006 (UTC) We should also do that. DavidJJJ 17:20, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Schweisser[edit]

On 01-July, you tagged Schweisser as a copyright violation. However, you had already removed the copyrighted text that had been added by a previous poster. Since you removed the copyrighted material, that resolved the problem and you didn't need to apply the copyvio tag. I have untagged it. If you have questions, please let me know. Thanks. -- JLaTondre 02:52, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Featured Picture Candidate[edit]

Hi Chris, I've nominated one of your Hummingbird Hawk-moth images for FPC. You can monitor its progress at Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/Hummingbird_Hawk-moth. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 12:07, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Black concert T-Shirt[edit]

Hello - The sentence you removed from Black concert T-Shirt may have been dubious, but it provided a reason why the t-shirts are typically black in color. Perhaps we can come up with a different way to explain the color choice? --Mattarata 16:12, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moth FPC[edit]

No reason, I was just interrupted before I could get to adding all the new FPs to the various lists, and I wasn't able to get back to the computer until now. I'll finish everything off tomorow, but of course your welcome to do it yourself if you'd like too... :) Raven4x4x 14:13, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Re: Rainbow not progressive metal[edit]

All you need to do to figure that out is listen to them. The only reason people don't group them into the genre is because it didn't have an official name until the mid-eighties. However, Rainbow's blend of classical stylings into the realm of heavy metal is the obvious precurser to the "official" prog metal scene.

September Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Request for comments concerning gender bias[edit]

I would like to request comments and suggestions for the following situation in Talk:List_of_major_opera_composers#Not_so_fast.__There_is_obvious_POV_gender_bias_here . This is a very long, complicated situation involving whether women should be included on this list of Opera composers. As a male musician who has done quite alot of research on women in music, I firmly believe that a representative sample should be on the list (I'm not suggesting 50/50 or even 30/70, just two or three representative women). When I first noticed this article, it was completely unsourced, and the "important composers" were chosen by a collegial system ("I like that." "I don't like that") without any mention of sources. I marked the article NPOV and Unsourced. The article quickly became sourced, but I continued to bring up the issue of gender bias and brought three sources to the discussion after consulting the International Alliance of Women in Music [[1]], all of which were dismissed because they only contained works by women. However, when the list was finally completed (I was asked not to participate, as I was considered to be have a POV agenda towards women and living composers), six of the ten lists used only contained the names of men. The other four only contained one woman (Judith Weir). If lists of only women composers are unacceptable, why are lists of only men composers acceptable? And was are sources which could prove the importance of women in music dismissed as having a POV agenda.

A colleague who is a teacher of Women's studies at an American University has suggested that this is a textbook case of "canon forming" or the creation of hierarchies using preconceived notions. The process involves making a hypothesis using the notions that one already has, such as "Important operas are only composed by dead, White, European males", using the sources already utilised for making the hypothesis for proving the statement and then dismissing contradictary sources or discrediting individuals who make statements which oppose the primary hypothesis.

I am certainly not asking anyone to get directly involved here, as this is already become quite violent and an RfA is currently underway. I would however appreciate any ideas concerning how to confront this sort of gender bias, any useful sources and other ideas, as well as general comments. Thank you Jean-Thierry Boisseau 20:53, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

epic metal[edit]

the list seems to be a mixture of bands of different subgenres... why not just go ahead and AFD it? Spearhead 07:21, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reply[edit]

I think the newer format works very well, it lists bands who encyclopediacly fall into the specific heavy metal genre; the subgenre bands each have their own lists on Wikipedia that they belong on instead.

As a "term".. the word "metal" is used by some broadly, but that doesn't have anything to do with what heavy metal as a specific "music genre" which is described as in its article.

The older version just doesn't work.. I mean, who is going to read that? Its just a mish mash of bands lumped together which have little to no relation to each other, nu-metal bands put in the same list as black metal bands, mixed together etc with no order at all... it was no use to anyone at all...

In the new format if people are looking to read about the original heavy metal.. its right there; or if they want to see a list of specific subgenre styles they're interested in, like thrash metal for example.. they scroll down and can easily find the link, and for people who don't know which bands fall into which subgenre, it gives them three notable examples of each.

There will always be fans who add bands like Cradle of Filth on the wrong list regardless.... some try to add them to the list of gothic rock bands from time to time, when they don't belong there either...

I suppose if somebody created a list for Symphonic metal acts then Cradle of Filth may fit onto that one. Problem solved. - Deathrocker 16:46, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Expansion of Wikiproject Hard Rock[edit]

Dear WikiProject Hard Rock members,
This is a notice about the proposed expansion of the WikiProject, so the scope covers rock music in general, changing it from "WikiProject Hard Rock" to "Wikiproject Rock music". Like I pointed out to the creator, DavidJJJ, what falls under the scope of "hard rock" may come into dispute, and there is no existing WikiProject for rock in general, only WikiProject Alternative music and WikiProject Punk music come somewhat close. This expansion will hopefully in theory be a guide/directory, and bring much needed attention to articles of this genre. DavidJJJ has already given kudos to the idea, and it is encouraged that you express your thoughts and concerns on the WikiProject's talk page before anything goes forward. We hope start the transition soon. Until then, please, make your voice heard! Cheers. -- Reaper X 22:32, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great image, IronChris[edit]

Well done. Just noticed User:Kylu's comment about the Macroglossum stellatarum being the featured pic for 27 Sep 06. I have taken the liberty of adorning the Lepidoptera project page with it. AshLin 16:20, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris. Well, I like the photo and you have done well to capture it, but I don't think it would pass as a featured picture mainly because the depth of field (what is in focus) is so small. Half of the wasp is out of focus and for an encyclopedic image, it really needs to be completely in focus. Keep trying though. :-) Next time (if light permits it), try stopping down the aperture more - that way you'll get greater depth of field. WikiProject Rock music[edit]

Well, after nearly no response, the expansion of WikiProject Hard Rock has gone ahead. We are now officially known as WikiProject Rock music! We are still in dire need of your participation, to add articles that fall within the scope of rock music, to invite users to join the WikiProject, and to get this show on the road. Be sure to drop by and see the new changes. Feel free to add {{User Wikiproject Rock music}} to your userpage.
I hope to see you around eh? Cheers. -- Reaper X 01:20, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

multi-page article gradings[edit]

Thanks a lot. Shyamal 01:34, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your assistance with this article. I spent a good hour scouring and compiling references which I added here Talk:Black_concert_T-shirt. Hopefully this can be incorporated into the article in some way or at the very least used to show that this article can stand on its own seperately from T-shirt or Concert T-shirt. Maybe I can add a section that says "References to the Black concert T-shirt in news and media"? (even though i know wikipedia is not a collection of links, and i generally dislike articles like that)--Mattarata 00:58, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arthropod assessment categories[edit]

I think I may have got slightly confused about the different categories involved, but I'm fairly sure that there was one too many. According to the instructions at {{ArthropodTalk}}, the category for unassessed-importance articles is Category:Unassessed-importance Arthropods articles. This also agrees with the category linked to in the summary table. However, until this morning, the template was actually placing all unassessed articles in Category:Unknown-importance Arthropods articles. I have changed the template to fill the former category, but that seems to leave the latter with no purpose (no pages link to it, and it is empty). Have I misunderstood, or is Category:Unknown-importance Arthropods articles now redundant? I can delete it if it is, but I keep getting confused every time I try to work out what's going on. The link to the category in the table, for instance, is below the links to stub-quality and start-quality articles, suggesting it's a quality-based, not importance-based category. If I've made a mistake, please tell me and I'll revert it. --Stemonitis 12:57, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One of my fears has been realised: the table is entirely re-created by MathBot daily, over-writing the changes you made. It looks like we might have to contact the bot's owner; the bot clearly mixes by-quality and by-importance categories in the same column, which must be wrong, mustn't it? Curiously, the same problem doesn't affect other similar tables, so perhaps it is something we could fix, although I would prefer to have access to the importance categories as well as the quality categories. If only I understood how the whole set-up works, I might be able to suggest something, but I really haven't got a clue! --Stemonitis 07:56, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Black Metal[edit]

I need to respectfully disagree with the comments you made on the black metal page. Nowhere did I state or even imply that all black metal bands condone church burning. And why did you put that hateful and antireligious attitudes are only found in some black metal subgenres? I don't even know what you mean by this - those are universal themes in black metal. Rock music Wikiproject invitation[edit]

Hello WikiProject Metal member.
WikiProject Metal music is important in expanding encyclopedic coverage of the metal. It brings attention to the lesser-known bands, and significantly improves the quality of the famous ones. Five Featured articles and two formers is proof of that.
This is the stuff I wish to achieve with the somewhat recently resurrected WikiProject Rock music. I hope to also attract attention to rock music articles of all sorts, and hopefully change some to GA or FA status. I invite you to come join us, and embrace the links between metal and rock music in general.
Rock on.

Triops longicaudatus[edit]

I have expanded the Triops longicaudatus article, and I am still adding any new facts I can find on the Internet. I am thinking of promoting it to GA-class status, but I need to know exactly what improvements it needs to make it flow. If you would like to make any suggestions, please leave them at Talk:Triops longicaudatus/Comments. Thank you. --Crustaceanguy 16:14, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just remembered: I will soon try to upload two files, Image:Triops anatomy en.svg and Image:Triops anatomy ru.svg, the first for the Triops longicaudatus article and the other for the Russian version of the Notostraca article. Both of them show the external morphology of Triops longicaudatus.--Crustaceanguy 16:24, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Assessments[edit]

I notice you were the one who assessed the arthropod article [6]. I think you need to be a bit more conservative on the ratings there. Compare our arthropod article with Britannica's. I think ours is much closer to start than an A-class, and have reassessed it accordingly. Richard001 (talk) 08:51, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
