World Forestry Congress[edit]

Nice work in creating the WFC article! It has prospects of becoming a good article. You will note that I have been editing it according to Wikipedia format and style guidelines. Here are a few pointers:

  1. Citations are needed for virtually all material in an article, per WP:RS and WP:VER.
  2. External links within the body of the article should generally be converted to citations.
  3. Images will be closely scrutinized as to copyright, best to ensure that any uploaded images not in the public domain have free licenses or permissions clearly stated per WP:IUP.
  4. As a general rule Wikipedia articles do not use bold in the body text of an article.
  5. Layout of articles is according to WP:Layout; for style see WP:MOS.

You are welcome. The essence of this project is collaborative editing. The article is coming along nicely, I think. There are a couple of small things you should know and one big thing. The big thing is use of images. People take copyright very seriously, as Wikipedia has been burned by this in the past. I note that Sherool placed a "non-free warning" on the article. You should talk to him. I suggest you ask him to tell you what needs to be done, or to refer you to someone who can tell you. You should take this seriously and try to fix it as soon as possible, IMO.
A couple of small things. Bold text is used only once - for the name of the article. Also, the indents and spacing are automatic if you use the standard wiki mark-up operators, such as for headings and lists. No additional spacing is needed. Sunray (talk) 16:56, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I couldn't help but notice some of the edits you've made recently to articles related to general forestry. It's nice to see people working so hard on the subject. WikiProject Forestry is now live- please consider joining! Essentially, WikiProjects are a way for editors to collectively work together on improving articles on a specific topic- and the forestry coverage on here has a long way to go. Hello Sherool, am adding a line on your talk page to ensure you see my response! Have made changes as per your indications. As far as I can see, all images now meet all 10 of the 10 criteria listed under "Wikipedia:Non-free content policy". Hence, I'd like to have the "non-free" tag on top of the World Forestry Congress removed, if possible. However, if you should think that something is not quite right, could you please advise on what is missing or, refer me to someone who can advise? Please note that written permission to use the images can be obtained, if necessary. Hello Sherool, this is a gentle reminder... another question for you: of course, links to the Unsaylva issues can always be provided, so that interested readers can access more information on each Congress (Unasylva devoted some of its issues to full reports on and from each of the Congresses). Hi, sorry about the lateness of my response, had a little mini Wikibreak while "recovering" from a period of working night shifts. Anyway the rationales generally look ok, one nitpick would be the part about allowing quotes from historical figures to be included. I rely don't see how that is relevant to the use of the image, quotes, if necessary, should be included in the main body of text where relevant. The use of the images should have no bearing on which quotes to include unless they directly related to the appearance of the image itself, and then only if the appearance of the image is actually relevant to the article in the first place. Also note the "minimal use" and "significance" criteria. Using one cover (first one for example) to show that Unasylva dedicate a cover to each congress would probably be ok, each cover added after that doesn't rely contribute much more to the understanding of the article, the choice of cover artwork is not a subject of the article so each additional cover basically just convey that "Unasylva dedicated a cover this year as well". Would be better to add something about Unasylva's coverage (including any important quotes) into the main text itself, as it stand Unasylva is not even mentioned in the article except as "self references" in the image captions.
If you create an article about Unasylva itself then you could certainly use a cover or two for purposes of visual identification of the publication and maybe one fo illustrate the typical art style of the cover and such. However a gallery of covers dedicated to the world forest congress would not be advisable. One or two very notable examples maybe, but a big gallery of non-free images are generally considered a big no-no unless there is a very compelling reason for dong it. See for example the Time Magazine article, a fairly notable publication with lots of iconic covers, yet only two examples are used in the article because of the strict rules. Also if anything using an image in one article means there is even less reason to use it again in a related article, because you can link to the other article where the images are used instead of using them again.
I'm afraid asking for permission to use the images are not all that relevant to the use on Wikipedia. Unless they actually allow the images to be released under a free license like such as the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License 3.0 or similar, a permission to use only on Wikipedia is still just a limited exclusive permission so the non-free content rules would still apply, since the purpose is to facilitate easy re-use (or filtering out) of the content rater than just legal use within the wikipedia.org domain itself. --Sherool (talk) 15:10, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sherool, many thanks for this - you are quite right about many of the covers, those may not be needed :-) Some, however, allow me to do just what you suggested above: "Would be better to add something about Unasylva's coverage (including any important quotes) into the main text itself, as it stand Unasylva is not even mentioned in the article except as "self references" in the image captions." For instance, where cover art work is directly related to the Congress, or where reference is made to planting a tree together (symbolically enough, the actors being representatives from the host country, USA and USSR...!). In the image caption, the anecdote is reported. So, I could just leave a few images? That way, it is also more intuitive for the reader that Unasylva has covered the Congress throughout the years (as is the case with image 2, and its caption) while reporting anecdotes (such as the stamp as tribute to the WFC, by UN Secreteray general in year 1961). Then, linkage to full cobverage in Unasylva can be provided by linking each subtitle of the Congress to a speficic Unasylva issue. What do you think? It's getting there, that childs drawing on top seems kinda random though. I get that it was published in a related publication but how does it actualy help inprove a readers understanding of the World Forestry Congres? It looks good there, but as long as the image is non-free it has to provide a tangable inprovement to a readers understanding of the topic, not just serve as "eye candy" (I took the liberty of removing it myself). Some of the others feel slightly "iffy" to me still for the same reason, you don't rely need to see a (very low resolution) photo of a plaque to understand that one was put there and so forth. Personaly I think you could simply remove most the images and work the caption text into the main article body instead without making the article any harder to understand. If you disagree I won't press the issue too much for now though (can spend my limited time here trying to adress more blatant problems), so I have removed the non-free warning banner, but do try your best keep the use of non-free images to just the absolute minimum nessesary to make the article easier to understand whenever you work on them, that is the "spirit" of the non-free policy as I understand it at least. --Sherool (talk) 20:50, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As for me, I'd probably leave as little as three images as those three actually add to the article by providing "visual" evidence of what is described in their caption, i.e. anecdotical aspects of the WFC and the reader may enjoy finding them as image and text rather than just in-line text, as the image is not merely an add-on to the description, but rather, an integral part of it. Other than that, I could not agree more!!! In regards to images, one thing to ask is "How does this image add value and how can I explain that value in a short description to the reader?". There are three images in this article each with an external link to the website. This is essentially spam. The revolving globe and more than image of the logo is probably not relavent. Uh, interesting remarks, BlindEagle. The revolving globe is there to let readers see the AGRIS initiative within a global context, as the revolving globe immediately conveys the idea of a... "global" cooperative network which AGRIS is, comprising over 250 Centres. As to the remaining two images, those in fact represent the old logo, which AGRIS has been associated with for the last 35 years or so and, the new one, stressing how AGRIS is not an initiative falling exclusively under the auspices of FAO, but part of a larger, international project carried out in partnership by several other international organziations, called CIARD. Each image thus not only refers to, but intrinsically identifies a stage or phase in the evolution of AGRIS. I am thankful for your remarks, in the absence of which I would not have been able to clarify :-) External links, I have been told above, should be avoided in the body of an article and may stay so long as they are used as reference, hence [1] in this form. Please feel free to rectify, should that not be the case! In any event, those links are not needed at all costs in the image captions, whilst you have just inspired a major amelioration to the captions. Thanks! On a slightly different note, I wished to thank you, BlindEagle for your earlier posting. Apologies for not responding earlier (internet connection problems.... at my end, that is :-) I agree, the bullet point lists would need verification. However, whilst time and users will tell whether the goals AGRIS is aiming for in its new phase have been/haven't been achieved, how, to whcih extent and if at all..... there is another bullt point list which refers more to the advantages of digital libraries, i.e. their "round the clock" availability etc. These are more or less matter of fact assumptions, as something that is available online would seem to offer that advantage (being accessible 24/hours a day, unless under miantenance for instance).... were it not for one's internet connection and its momentary or permament limitation/s..... At this point, are you trying to go to GA-Class with this article or just put it out there for people to edit? The answer will help understand how much help you may or may not want. There are still large swaths of text that are not cited and it still reads as if it came from a bilboard. Glad to help. I updated the The AGRIS repository section. Or, I started to update it. The list in the paragraph really wasn't working for me as it was a little hard to get through with the roman numerals in the way. I put it in a numbered list that needs some attention. I'm going to leave the {{unreferenced}} section tag instead of tagging each paragraph individually. Instead of checking your sources, I read this section a few times. There are two questions that need to be answered:
  1. How does this relate to AGRIS? Could this be summed up on a few sentences?
  2. Why does a long description a digital library necessary? Are we comparing and contrasting to inform the reader about one thing or another?
