Project directory[edit]
You may have a point regarding the multiple listings of the projects in several locations. But that was the format of the existing directory, so we would probably want consensus before altering the existing system. Regarding the size of the directory, there are currently over 1300 separate WikiProjects and groups doing assessments, and an uncounted number that don't do assessments, so with all the listings it will take a while for the directory to load, particularly for the geographical pages, given the number of projects which directly and indirectly relate to given countries. In fact, that was the reason I started with those pages. The rest should be easier to deal with. The purpose of the multiple listings is to allow people who have a particular interest in a given country or subject to know all the groups which believe that they deal with that subject, while at the same time keeping the size of the directory pages as small as possible with the shorter texts required for the redirect listings. If you want to change the format of the directory, or the amount of material in a given page, I'm not sure there would necessarily be any objection to that, but it should be discussed first, probably on the talk page of the WikiProject Council, whose subpages the directory is in. Baseball has a history unlike any other sport. It has been played in countless countries throughout the decades, and it will undoubtedly continue play for many more. On this eve, some the finest players the sport has to offer will take the field at the Yankee Stadium. Four popes spoke there, Pelé scored goals there, "The Greatest [football] Game Ever Played" was battled out there, John Philip Sousa lead a band there, George Costanza worked there; but what do all these events have in common? They fail to reach the level of greatness that the baseball that was played there did. In 1923, a man named Babe Ruth decided to build a new house, and over the years, that house was a home to some of the greatest baseball ever played. If I were to list out all of these great moments, it would be longer than the bill for the New Yankee Stadium. So I'll sum it up by saying that we can remember these great moments by adding them to this place we've gathered at for future generations to read about, to learn about, to dream about; but more importantly we can watch tonight and we can remember how baseball is unlike anything else that we will encounter in our lives. — Blackngold29 |

Motto of the day[edit]
Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.
When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

Rivers in Taiwan[edit]
Please let me know if there is anything wrong with "rivers in Taiwan"? It is the most unambiguous term. "Rivers of Taiwan" can (but not always) imply that Taiwan is a sovereign state but rivers in Taiwan cannot. If you want a country, then let's change to title to "list of rivers of the Republic of China".
You may think that Taiwan is a country (regardless of the sovereign issue). I don't, and I don't think I represent a marginal view as the majority of the people in Taiwan prefer a status quo. This is the status quo: Taiwan's status is ambiguous. Picking a name such as "Rivers in Taiwan" to sidestep Taiwan's status is the right thing to do to avoid edit wars.
I have a feeling that you are here on Wikipedia to pursue a Taiwan independence agenda, and in some cases, at the expense of Wikipedia's quality. Another example is your insistence on "Taiwan national baseball team". I read the talks. For some reason, you insist on a name that doesn't even exist in Chinese! The official Chinese name as you know is the "National baseball team of the Republic of China", and the official English name is "Chinese Taipei Baseball Team". Check their official website. If you argue that the content of the article has more than just the Olympics "Chinese Taipei" team, then let's revert the article back to its proper name, the name that the team calls itself by: "National baseball team of the Republic of China".
It is curious to me that you accuse others of playing politics in that article. That's essentially, in my view, what you are doing by insisting on a name that doesn't exist so there is a "Taiwan national" phrase in it.

- You may accuse me of pursuing a Taiwan independence agenda, but I can as well accuse you of pursuing a Chinese reunification agenda. So what is the point of this?
I think there is a category of people who prefers the status quo and I think I made it clear that I belong there. You appear to be making the generalisation that Pan-green people tend to make: if you are not with me, you must be a pro-reunificationist. If I am working forwards reunification, I would have changed the title to "Rivers of the Taiwan Area of China", or "Rivers of Taiwan, China". There is nothing pro-reunification about "Rivers in Taiwan".
- You are saying that "Taiwan is a country" may not be a majority view, therefore it is more neutral to use "Rivers in Taiwan" instead of "of Taiwan." However, it is also not a majority view that "Taiwan is not a country." Any implication that Taiwan is not a country (such as sidestepping its status) could also violate NPOV.
Sidestepping its status can violate NPOV? That's interesting. The fact that Taiwan's status doesn't get definied violates NPOV? I don't see you making a protest on articles such as "Political Status of Taiwan", "Legal Status of Taiwan" or any other articles that have a conclusion that Taiwan's status is ambiguous. You seriously think that there is anything wrong with a neutral title such as "Rivers in Taiwan"? If you do, I guess we can't have articles mentioning things like "Taipei 101 is a building in Taiwan". It must be mentioned as "Taipei 101 is a building of Taiwan".
- The article Taiwan national baseball team is not just about the team under IOC. The team competed under various names including Republic of China and Taiwan. According to the common name conventions, using Taiwan would be most appropriate because we are not using the "official name" (which doesn't even exist in English) anyway. Another example would be Hong Kong national baseball team; it is not having a problem with its neutrality, is it?--Jerrch 02:28, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Are you seriously saying that ordinary readers who read the title as well as the article "Hong Kong national baseball team" would think that Hong Kong is a country? I think that's an extreme POV and the possibility should be safely discounted. Comparing the Hong Kong independence movement with the world famous Taiwan independence movement is quite inappropraite.
Please read the talks that I put up under that article. The nationality of the team is so distorted no reasonable readers can understand it any more. For the sake of readers and the quality of the encyclopaedia, I think we should just use the neutral term of Chinese Taipei. The official name of "National baseball team of the Republic of China" does exist in English if you translate it properly. If you argue that it doesn't, I guess things like "Hoping Road" or "Kaohsiung" can't exist either because the name is named the Chinese way. However, "Taiwan National Baseball Team" doesn't even exist in Chinese. It is a totally made up term that has no Chinese parallels. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]
Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! User group for Military Historians[edit]
Greetings,
"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
