Wikipedia is fun[edit]

Sometimes things get rough on here. Vandalism, content disputes, heated arguments - Wikipedia can be a lot of stress. But it's all worth it for those moments when you look through four-year-old delist nominations and see a vote like yours. Makeemlighter (talk) 22:06, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Haha, nice. Even I laughed on re-reading that. :) --jjron (talk) 11:26, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

The Man from Ironbark[edit]

Thank you so much for posting a link to that poem; I enjoyed reading it immensely, though in truth, my "flowing beard is all the go" not due to any dangers of shaving, but simply because I enjoy the shadow it casts. Cheers. -- ToE 11:59, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, I really like it too. We 'studied' it way back in primary school and I've always enjoyed it; Banjo Paterson has some good work. Cheers, --jjron (talk) 08:48, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

at the heart diagram nomination? I meant to ask you to do that a few days ago, but I forgot. Since you had some concerns during the original nomination, I'd like to know if they're addressed to your satisfaction. The nomination looks like it will pass regardless, but I'd appreciate it if you could take a quick look. Thanks! Makeemlighter (talk) 01:27, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Personally I can't see that it's much different in terms of the thickness of the ventricle walls, etc, but seems to be well supported. I really don't like the right ventricle looking so much bigger than the left, but looks like that's got the nod. Also left a note on the pending promotion re the left atrium disappearing when you click through the image page. --jjron (talk) 15:31, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Done. FWIW I can't tell much diff between the two tilt corrected edits and can't be bothered analysing them in detail to decide, so whichever is OK with me. --jjron (talk) 05:47, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

The drive begins on March 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on March 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goal for the drive will be to eliminate the remaining 2010 articles from the queue. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, Stfg, and Coordinator emeritus SMasters. 19:40, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Hemerocallis Lilioasphodelus.jpg[edit]

Hi JJ, thank you for warning me. I had not been warned of the discussion. I have little time now, I'll do some more research tomorrow, I just wanted to tell you I'm convinced it is Hemerocallis l., from the research I did about flowers found in Venezuela. I found out H. sp. is commonly exported and breeds throughout the world. My picture shows a cultivated flower of a little town I visited. I found out lilioasphodelus is one of the most common Hemerocallis in Venezuela and did a lot of comparisons among H. flowers. The only one coinciding with my specimen was lilioasphodelus. I can't be sure 100%, but it would be nice if you guys don't delist it already, because most probably it is well identified. I even have Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus at home in my garden, they are pretty common here. I will try to provide proof that it is the correct species tomorrow. Thank you very much for the warning, I appreciate it. Have a good day. Regards, --Paolo Costa 06:14, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)

Hi, sorry, I've been travelling and haven't been on Wikipedia in a couple of months. Not sure if this is too late now.
If you are able to log in with a basic account (takes about 30secs to create) you'll be able to get a link to email me if you want, which may be easier. Unfortunately I'm not carrying all my photos with me on the road, but will be back with them by the weekend if that's not too late.
Depending on usage (size of image as it will be used, distribution of publication, etc), if it's for commercial purposes people have paid anything up to $500 for whatever usage you intend (not to purchase the copyright or resale rights though). If you're talking fairly small scale usage it could be considerably less. For non-profit educational or personal use I don't usually charge at all. Perhaps easier to negotiate if you could email me.
Cheers, jjron.

Los Angeles[edit]

I've seen several FPC noms from you in the Los Angeles area. Are you living here now, or was that just a vacation? If you're in town in ten days' time, I invite you to come to the Los Angeles Wikinic, which I'm organizing. howcheng {chat} 22:36, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

No, sorry, was only in LA for three days in late March, before moving on to San Fran and then across to the south and the east coast until early May. You'll probably get to see some of those pics too at FPC. ;) I'm sometimes surprised given the population over there, and I must say even the number of people I saw with decent cameras as I travelled, how there can be a lack of good photos of even notable places at times on WP. I'm now back at home (and back at work). Thanks for the offer though. Cheers, --jjron (talk) 08:32, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Re: FPC[edit]

You should really just take a deep breath and realize that there aren't people out to get you, just people trying to uphold the rules. You seem to be getting way too upset over this. Hello Mr. O'Neill,

I am interested in using the image located at http://commons.wikimedia.org wiki/File:10_Cable_Car_on_Hyde_St_with_Alcatraz,_SF,_CA,_jjron_25.03.2012.jpg in a soon-to-be-published non-fiction book set in Francisco. Please inform me of any and all applicable licensing regulations and/or fees associated with this usage and what steps I should take to expedite the process.

Thank you,

Hi Stephen. Thanks for your request. As shown on the image page my images are licensed under the GFDL licensing. If you want less restrictive licensing we can negotiate terms. These vary depending on your usage (scope, personal/educational/commercial usage, etc). I most likely have this image available at a higher resolution too. Sign painting FPC[edit]

Hi John. I see that the image you nominated at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Sign painting was kept at the Commons deletion request. Rather than re-open the nomination, I'd prefer to close it and let you re-nominate. That will make the whole process a little neater. Is that okay with you? Cheers, Makeemlighter (talk) 22:48, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Well, I guess someone went ahead and re-opened it. Anyway, I hope all goes well in your life. Best, Makeemlighter (talk) 00:12, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Hi Makeem. Thanks for the notifications. Meh, I thought I withdrew that nomination when the trouble started. I doubt it has any chance of succeeding now. I have a few other existing images that I might nom at FPC some time if I get around to it, and just leave it at that, I'm not particularly fussed. As you may have noticed I haven't been participating at all around here. I may do a bit more editing at some point, but at this stage I probably won't be contributing any more images to Wikipedia. Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Photo Use[edit]

Hello John, I am a freelance photo researcher working on obtaining images for an upcoming Travel and Leisure website slide show. Please note that this project is not educational but commercial. I would like to find out if you would be willing to let us license your image of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA, CA. The use would be for a slide show on Travel and Leisure.com's website running from October 19th through December 31. Would you be willing to let us license this image for a fee for this type of commercial use? It won't be used in print only online. The slide show is showing the favorite places to visit in four usa cities. I appreciate your help with my request. I wasn't able to connect with the PR office at the Music Center at the time of my production deadline, so I showed my client your image and it was selected. However, I understand if you don't want it used in this manner, but we can pay a fee and also show your photo credit online below the photo. Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture[edit]

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Everlastings_on_MtHotham_Vic.jpg). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

Thank you for the information Duane. Your site sounds interesting, and a real labour of love! Glad you could find a use for my picture. You are welcome to use any other pictures I have contributed too - just be aware many of them carry a GFDL license, which means they are still usable, but their reuse is more restrictive. If you contact me about the usage I will often be willing to provide you with less restrictive terms for no cost for a project such as you describe. Cheers, --jjron (talk) 13:47, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Yep, done intentionally as that page actually has a definition of millennial as part of its link to millennium. --jjron (talk) 01:48, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. Have had a quick read of the proposal. I will give it some more thought and have a closer look in the next few days and try to get back to you. Cheers, --jjron (talk) 12:40, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I have been meaning to get back to this but got sidetracked by a massive POV pushing campaign elsewhere that wasted a disproportionate amount of my time. Now I see this has been given the kibosh anyway. It sounded pretty good, so feel free to let me know if you get the chance to pursue it again. --jjron (talk) 13:45, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Request for photo usage[edit]

My name is Griselda Lehrer and I am writing a book called “The Alexander Pantages Story” to be published by the Tacoma Historical Society.

I have served on the board of the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts for 23 years, which has managed the Pantages Theater for the past few decades.

In my book, I will be including brief vignettes on the five remaining theaters still in operation, including the Hollywood Pantages Theater, and would like to use your digital photo exterior of the theater posted on wikipedia.

Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. David Fisher, Executive Director of the Broadway Center, can verify my work with the board and the Greater Tacoma Community.

PD credit[edit]

I'm intrigued by your new credit template. If I'm interpreting it correctly, this appears to be requesting reusers follow certain conditions rather than requiring this through legally-enforcible conditions. Do you intend to use this for all future pictures or perhaps just those with no potential commercial opportunity? Have you considered CC0 (here and here)? I'm curious to know the reasons for the new terms.

I have myself considered if CC BY-SA was enforcing something I have no intention of enforcing. I think people morally should attribute the creator of works but if they don't then that's their problem not mine. I'd like people to keep my image free if they reuse it, but do I specifically require them to keep using that CC licence version and wording - not really. So I wonder that strict SA terms may actually prevent some reuse. Perhaps the world needs a licence with nearly no legal obligations but with some expectations? -- Colin°Talk 09:33, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

October 2013[edit]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Peter Crimmins may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • crimmoscup>{{cite web|last=Jackson|first=Russell|title=The Joy of Six: great grand final moments: 4) Crimmo's Cup in '76|url=http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2013/sep/24/joy-of-six-grand-final-

Thanks, BracketBot (talk) 13:15, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

True enough, but it's a false positive based on a quoted title. So the unpaired bracket is correct in this situation. --jjron (talk) 00:16, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Use of image[edit]

Dear John,

We would like to use an image of yours for a children's book about the brain. I am editor at Moon in the Netherlands (www.uitgeverijmoon.nl). At the moment we are making a book about the human brains for children from 8 till 12. In the last chapter a comparison is made between the human brain and computers. In this chapter we would like to use the image below. Are you okay with that? I can send you an example of how it looks like in the book if you send me your email address. I hope you can reply asap, as we are a bit in hurry. The book has to go to the printer soon.

I hope to hearing from you.

Best wishes, Hannerlie Modderman hannerlie.modderman@uitgeverijmoon.nl
