Null Bot and PRODs

See Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#PRODs_not_expiring. It seems that your bot may have failed somewhere in that no purge was performed yesterday, as none of the articles in the March 1 PROD category were showing on the expired category's page. Just a quick request related to this: since someone notes that we can't tell when the bot fails because it never edits, could you instruct it to make occasional edits? Perhaps you could create a page in its userspace that it would edit once per day, simply by replacing the page's contents with ~~~~? I read WP:BOTAPPROVAL to indicate that unapproved edits to the bot's own userspace are fine without approval. Nyttend (talk) 00:20, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Amruta Sapre

The page is half-baked, but I will try to see if I can find some reliable resources. Unfortunately, not much info about this Indian actress is shown to be found anywhere on the net, at this point, other then the fact that she has voiced Bloom in the Hindi dub of Italian animated series Winx Club for Season 4 (at least it's what it says I believe), and for an additional voice role in Indian animated film Return of Hanuman, as I heard from a friend who does actually live in India. I want to, but the reason probably isn't obvious -- you're asking about "task 2", and not having automated the daily initiation of "task 1" has been a PITA. Deletion of article on LINAK

Hi Joe,

I can see you have deleted the page Linak.

It is quite difficult for me to find the discussion leading up to the deletion (and even to find the previous content of the article), but my guess is that "family owned" has been misinterpreted as "small". But the owner of LINAK is actually a US dollar billionaire and is the 6th richest person in Denmark and the 1268th richest person in the world (source, in Danish). And the previous text that was in the Linak article (which showed up via my Google Dictionary extension in Chrome) was actually quite helpful to me. I wanted to know what Linak was, and the text quote from Wikipedia (given by the Google Dictionary extension) explained that in a short and to the point manner. Therefore I was surprised to find the article deleted on Wikipedia.

Maybe Linak is not very known (I didn't know about it), but what is the point of an encyclopedia if not to make things more known to people? And to make it possible to look up things you don't know about? As I said, we are not talking about any little small family business with two employees, but a major company within its niche: linear actuators. Try for instance to make an unpersonalized search for "linear actuator" on Google. To me, Linak comes up as the first company in the results. See also Linak in Brief: 1,600 employees in 35 countries.

We shouldn't be fooled about the fact that it is "family owned"; LEGO is a Danish family owned business too.

There is also plenty of stuff on Wikipedia that only very very few people know of, but I don't see that that should be reason to remove it from the encyclopedia. On the contrary, that is more of a reason to keep it. It's the whole point of an encyclopedia to state facts that few people know about – otherwise they wouldn't look it up.

As I said, I can't find the discussion leading up to the deletion (maybe it should be made easier to find these discussions?), so I don't know exactly why it was deleted. And I cannot even read the original, as the history seems to have been deleted as well? So I don't really know what arguments to come up with, as I don't know the arguments (and facts) leading to the deletion. But I do find a small article about Linak to be very relevant, given that it is a large company within its niche, although not very known outside its niche.

And that it is owned by a US dollar billionaire seems to make it relevant as well.

Maybe the original was written too much like an advert? Well, I can't see if that is the case, because I cannot find the original, because the history has been deleted as well...

I find it quite strange that the history is deleted too when an article is deleted here on Wikipedia. Couldn't the system just make the article empty, meaning "deleted" / "not written", but keep its history, so that it is easy to go back and see what was written before and especially to check that the facts match the reasons given for deletion?

So, what is the procedure to make the article come back? I would be happy to remove any advertising-looking phrasing in it, if there is any. And also to add the information that makes it notable, for instance that the owner is a billionaire, how many employees it has in how many countries, etc., so it won't be deleted again. I just don't want to rewrite it all over again, just because some quick deleter that didn't investigate it enough thought it should be deleted.

Where did the deleted article go?

(Edit: If this is the "discussion" leading up to deletion, I don't see much discussion in that. Only the opinions (which I don't think is a discussion) of a very few people. Definitely not enough to lead to such a major thing as deleting a page and hiding its contents (I still can't find the old content of the page)).

Yep, that is the relevant discussion, it makes non-obvious reference to a couple policies, so I'll try and translate what's going on there. The editors there aren't intentionally speaking in code, but the volume of our rules and regulations often leaves some of our conversations a little jargony.
Promotional tone was one issue, but that's usually dealt with by editing--fixing the words, rather than simply deleting the article. The other concern there (and you see references to this when people talk about the word sources is whether the article is based on the "multiple, reliable, third-party" sources that provide in-depth coverage that are required by our basic WP:CORP guideline.
The easiest thing to do to get a Linak article is first to create a draft article in your user space, say Ualk:Jhertel/Linak. The critical part of this is finding a couple of magazine articles, books, or newspaper articles, that are written independently of the company (not reprinted press releases!) and that talk about the company in some detail. Then use those as references for what you write in the article. Give me a poke when you've got something together, and if I think it's reached our WP:CORP bar, I'll be happy to move the article into place, if we end up disagreeing on that, I'll be happy to point you in the direction of where you can appeal. Per the WP:RFC and WP:FRS guidelines, I respectfully request your feedback regarding a question of law.

Should the Ugg boots trademark disputes article include example cases of counterfeit consumer goods? Is the counterfeiting of brand name goods a "trademark dispute" when the counterfeiters are taken to court? One editor has raised a WP:NPOV concern, since the only case (out of many under discussion involving Australian companies) that has been lost by the Australian company is being excluded; he feels that excluding it leaves the impression that Australian companies "are as pure as the driven snow, and can do no wrong." Also, another editor has claimed that the introduction of example cases of counterfeiting "dilute" the discussion about whether the word "UGG" is a generic term, and therefore ineligible for trademark protection.

Thanks for the suggestion of putting up a doppelganger, I've just gone ahead and done so, I should have done that earlier. Not sure it's strictly necessary, the default spoofing checks should prevent normal users from creating that, but ... hey, can't hurt. I'm a little confused by one thing though, my signature generally does link to my userpage and/or user talk page (for the word talk), is that not working? I will let the reviewers decide what they think, but when I look at the many, many sources you've provided, they are still self-published sources, blogs, submitted articles--I don't see a single one (and with so many, it's possible that I've missed something) that is the specific kind of newspaper article, newspaper article, book reference, etc., that meets our guidelines on reliable sources, which you can find at WP:RS. You may also find WP:IRS helpful I have suggested in the past that you get feedback on specific articles at WP:RSN, by asking questions there too, I doubt most of the references here would have gotten approval at that latter noticeboard. I feel that we must be having some trouble communicating about Wikipedia's requirements here, and I'm sorry about that, but I suspect (the reviewer will decide, of course, and I won't interfere), but I suspect that the submission will be declined. Duplicate names in leads

Hi Joe, I have removed the duplicate name for a Brazilian tennis player which has been tagged as dubious since June 2012 and noted why on Talk. I raised the issue on the RM of another Portuguese Tennis player here Talk:Vizcaíno. This remains counter all en.wp bios and counter WP:MOSPN and as tennis editor Jevansen says makes us look ridiculous. The issue isn't whether the European Symposium on Programming is important or not, I'll take you at your word that it is, I certainly know of it. The issue, from Wikipedia's point of view, is whether that's demonstrated through independent sources. You may find WP:GNG, or it's cut-down version WP:42 helpful reading. Help!

There are a few anonymous users editing certain pages by fan perspectives. The things that are constantly being edited are the information for Skylanders: Swap Force, and the International titles, airings and ratings for Goosebumps (TV series) and The Nightmare Room respectively. I tried to invert the changes, but they keep coming back and somehow, more come in from the previous. What do I do? Hi Joe, thanks for your notes re: Allen Wood's wiki page. I view the absence of this page as a significant gap in the Wikipedia, but I understand your concern that my stub article was insufficiently referenced. My hope was to get the page approved, then buff it up, since there's a limit to how much work I can justify on a page that might get canned. I close a lot of deletion discussions, and if I understand the article correctly, I think that Wood unequivocally meets WP:PROF criteria #5, I'll let you read it yourself to understand why I think it's a clear-cut case. Assuming that you haven't snuck in some hoaxy material or copyvios), once a few reliable references have been added to satisfy our verifiability policy, etc. this should be entirely safe from deletion. Hello! I set up Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement/Protection to cascade-protect the weekly TAFI queue page and its ten subpages the day before they're used on the main page. Would it be feasible to have your bot purge the page's cache once per week (after 00:00 UTC each Sunday) to ensure that the necessary transclusions occur? If you're operating on Pacific Time, 00:15 UTC would be 5:15 pm during Daylight Saving Time (if your bot observes it) or 4:15 pm during Standard Time. 5:15 pm would work year-round, as this would translate to either 00:15 or 01:15 UTC.

Please don't go to too much trouble. Leaving it at 5:15 pm Pacific Time year-round would be perfectly fine. Whether the cascading protection takes effect at 00:15 or 01:15 UTC makes no practical difference. Either leaves plenty of time before the content hits the main page (at 00:00 UTC the following day).

I think you might have misunderstood the rejection, if you carefully read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GNG#General_notability_guideline, you'll find that it calls for reliable, independent sources, which would not include Wikipedia due to reliability, (see WP:RS), nor the other references you've added due to independence. You might find WP:IRS of help as well. Once you've found sources that back up what's in the article from an arms length, you should be able to resubmit.
As to how to resubmit, I'm not sure why it wasn't included before, but there should now be a link in the top rejection notice on the article draft that you can use to resubmit. Sorry for any confusion caused. Best of luck! --j⚛e deckertalk 07:09, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

I hadn't, but I just went and looked. I've added six months of WP:PC level one protection to the article, we haven't had anything but vandalism from non-autoconfirmed users in that long and we've (percentage-wise) too much vandalism, I think it's an easy call. Yeah, PC got revived for limited use, a month or two back, but this is really the best use case for it in my opinion--ugly vandalism, vandalism that will be easy to spot by reviewers, very low-volume article. The reviewing software is a bit of a mess, but is at its worst when there's a backlog of edits to be reviewed, I don't think that should be a problem here. I'd've just used semi-protection if I couldn't have used PC.
it's nice to be able to do things now and then--you'd be a real help with complex template/LUA coding I'm sure--but mostly I got the sense you'd rather stay out of the admin business, and I really respect that. Maybe we'll eventually get some sort of workable unbundling, that'd be nice.

Hello. Thanks for engaging with me here on my talk page. When I declined that article, I gave you references to our general notability guideline and to WP:42, which provides a quick overview of the former. Those guidelines are the basic test for inclusion in our encyclopedia, they insure that we have enough independent, reliable, third-party information to base what we say on. Now, I gave a couple examples of the sorts of sources that might work to establish that this fellow meets that test, and there may be others, if you read WP:IRS you may get a sense of how Wikipedia's policies look at the question of whether a source is reliable enough.
These policies help us reduce the amount of false information, promotional information, and non-neutral information in the encyclopedia, and are very important to us.
I'm very sorry that these policies are confusing, but they are what they are. In your shoes, I would work to find more reputable third-party sources that indicate what you're telling me about this guy, and use those to improve the article, then resubmit it. "Most chess engines do not have their own graphical user interface (GUI) but are rather console applications that communicate with a GUI such as XBoard, WinBoard or glChess via a standard protocol." Chess GUIs (or chess interfaces) such as XBoard, Fritz chess interface, etc., normally cannot 'think' but rather plug-in a number of chess engines (usually one at the time) to perform that functionality (chess 'thinking').

Every chess engine is different (different chess engines may assess chess positions differently and advise different chess moves). There are competitions where chess engine chess playing strengths is assessed. CCRL 40/40

"Vafra for Microsoft Windows is a free (by Robert Jurjevic cloned from Crafty) Winboard chess engine with classical approach to chess. Vafra chess engine can be used with ChessBase's Microsoft Windows Fritz chess interface (via Wb2Uci adaptor written by Odd Gunnar Malin) as an UCI chess engine to assist in chess analysis." This effectively means that Vafra is (yet) another chess engine (derived from and closely similar to Crafty chess engine) which can be plugged-into Microsoft Windows Fritz chess interface.

Vafra is not one of the top chess engines but plays a decent chess (many times it makes the same moves chosen by top chess grandmasters, that is evident when following big chess tournaments online live, it normally loses when playing against other top chess engines such as Houdini, Rybka, Stockfish, etc.)

Some chess engines have their separate Wikipedia pages (including Crafty from which Vafra is derived): Houdini, Rybka, Stockfish, Crafty, etc.

If Vafra chess engine is not notable deserving a separate Wiki page maybe I could edit Crafty chess engine page (not sure if I would be allowed to do that) mentioning that there is Vafra (Crafty clone) chess engine.

Prof Robert Hyatt (principal author of Crafty chess engine) may confirm that Robert Jurjevic (that is me) is working on Vafra (Crafty clone) chess engine for years now (Robert J and Prof Hyatt exchanged hundreds of emails on the subject).

Is that right? If so, then it has the same problem according to our guidelines as citing Wikipedia itself, or Wikia, or even IMDB. Oh my oh my. I read through the arguments and, reread the later parts of PROF (rare to see any criteria but C1 in play, so that was actually a treat), reread the AfD.... and came up with the same answer you did. I also spent a couple minutes trying to dig through sources myself, and couldn't make a compelling case for WP:GNG, either. So I would have closed the way you did, and probably (if I'd been participating) voted 'delete' or 'weak delete' if I'd come to the article fresh. Like journalists, this sort of subject is likely to get a lot more passing mentions than directed coverage, which often leads to people who don't live and breathe GNG getting surprised and disappointed. Hey, thanks for coming over here. We're talking about WT:Articles_for_creation/STEIGER_DYNAMICS this submission.
I think the first thing I should say is that "rejected" isn't forever, but it will take some changes, in my view, to get this approved.
In terms of promotional language, non-encyclopedic language, etc., the first thing I noticed, on a detail level was the use of subjective adjectives and adverbs, "ultra-quiet", "aesthetically pleasing", "seamlessly integrates", "industry leading components", "to the discerning user", and so on, in addition to marketingese verbs such as "enables" and "facilitates".
If you have any relationship at all with SD, you may wish to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest as well, with regard to that sort of writing. It's hard to do about yourself or your company, and we don't recommend it.
There is another problem, too, another "hurdle" any article on Wikipedia should meet goes by the name of our notability guideline. It's a term of art here, with a very specific test, called the general notability guideline. You can read it at WP:GNG, or a short version of it at WP:42. Roughly speaking, that PC Gamer review is the sort of source that guideline is looking for, you'll want a second, independent, reliable magazine/book type article to demonstrate that you meet this second test. In general, I recommend only using third-party sources to write an article from. Your mention of Editors' Choice is entirely on-subject and appropriate, it's their opinion (and probably a fair one) but one the article describes as their opinion, which is fine. Only use primary sources (that is, what you can find on SD's web site) to fill in incidental details. This strategy tends to result in articles that meet our various guidelines more quickly.

Because that was deleted as the result of a community discussion based on our notability guideline and sourcing, it took me time to verify the references you've provided, and the press releases left me with the impression that you were not familiar with those policies and guidelines. However, of the five articles you've provided there, I've been able to verify the 2003 Black Belt article and (more or less) the Martial Arts Illustrated article, they appear to be reliable, contain signficant coverage, and were not "in view" during the AfD. I assume you have access to all five of these articles, and will be rewriting the article based on the verifiable information within them, and including the references to those sources. Nope. Sorry that we have such a maze of policies, it is difficult to make sense of them when you're new
our article needs references/citations to reliable sources, independent of the subject, that talk about the subject in detail.
To explain further, "relliable sources" generally means things like newspaper articles, magazine articles, things that have had to be written and checked through by an editorial process.
"independent of the subject" means that it can't be the company's home page, Facebook page, press release, product description they wrote, etc.
This limitation can be frustrating, as this requirement prevents many subjects that are not particularly famous from having Wikipedia articles. It does guarantee that we're more likely to have correct and unbiased information, which is why we do things this way, but it does come with a cost. --j⚛e deckertalk 15:13, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Sure, the plot summary was, as near as I can tell, directly taken from probably from your film company's literature, e.g. [2]. You may (quite reasonably) wonder why that's an issue.
When you enter text in Wikipedia, you're actually making a copyright claim, the text between the edit summary and where you press "Save page" says:
By clicking the "Save page" button, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL.
More or less you're asserting that you own the copyright to the text in doing so, and that you're giving anyone the right to use that text for any reason. For the film, it's possible you have that authority, but there's no way that we would directly know it.
Anyway, it is possible to work through that issue if you really have the legal right to, that is covered at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials, and once that was handled, I could undelete. Thanks for the reply. So as you suggested I will rephrase this... I am attaching below an alternate plot summary.

"Little adivasi Oonga missed his village school trip to see the ‘Ramayan’. Upset at being the only kid in his village Pottacheru who has not yet seen the fantastic warrior-king ‘Rama’, Oonga runs away, embarking on a long perilous journey to the big harsh city Lohabad where he's told he will find this mythical hero.

Oonga braves his way across forests, rivers and roads, stealing lifts on cars past valleys laid to waste by industrialization… along scary under-construction highways… until he reaches large, cold, chaotic, blinding Lohabad. Where he finally sees the play.

He's stunned to see that Rama is everything the adivasi are - gentle, brave, a forest dweller and protector of mother-earth Sita. But he is Blue! Oonga gapes in awe as his hero saves Sita from the greedy ravaging demon king Ravana.

When he emerges from the play, Oonga believes he has become Rama! Painted blue, he returns to Pottacheru, unaware that he is now returning not to the warm, safe confines of a home he left behind, but to a battlefield where the ‘company’ will do anything to take the adivasi’s land away from them to mine it for Bauxite.

As the Naxalite rebels and the CRPF soldiers go to war over Pottacheru, little Oonga, in his Rama avtaar, believes he can save his home from the Ravana seeking to ravage it.

And a little blue boy picks up a little bow and arrow to script an eternal story."

Jcgloble3 -- thanks for the note. Karthik, if you see this and create a new account, here's what I'd say. Articles on corporations here have to be referenced to, and largely written from--reliable, third-party sources. That generally means magazine and newspaper articles (but not counting those that are simply reprinted press releases.) And those articles need to really talk at length about the article subject, not just mention it. And the article needs to be written in words not used in other copyrigthed material, and written in a way that sounds like an encyclopedia--very neutral and non-promotional. This is very hard to do if you're involved with the subject, hard enough that we generally recommend that you don't try, although it's obvious that many ignore this advice. Here's a plain and simple overview to the conflict-of-interest issues: Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. I have just noticed the template {{polluted category}} at the top of Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica which was added by you added by you

I have also noticed it at the top of several other categories that I monitor, all of which contain the test described in the next sentence. I am curious as to why you have added {{polluted category}} as the category is only populated by transclusions (instances of the template) that pass the following test:

{{#ifeq: {{NAMESPACEE}} |<!--is set--> |<!-- then-->[[Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica]] ... }} (For an explanation of how this test works please see Help:Magic_words m:Help:Magic words)

This test was added to this template back in August 2010 explicitly to exclude user space, talk pages and template space (for such things at the tests placed on the testcases sub pages.

Ahh, but it is polluted. Check the first two entries in the category, the very first one is not in article space. That, I suspect, triggered inclusion in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_reports/Polluted_categories , and would still. (At one time I had a hope of getting that listing to be small enough to be complete-- by fixing templates with the sort of test you indicated here, marking truly "ok to be polluted" cats as such, and so on. Hi Besteastern. Notability, as the term is used in our guidelines, is pretty straightforward. Just show a couple of reliable, secondary sources--things like magazines or newspaper articles about the award, and it's a done deal. You can see this policy at WP:GNG or in brief at WP:42. that policy is there in part to ensure anything said about a topic is based on somewhat neutral, arm's length references. Hi, we caught the copying of text from [3], I'm sorry that wasn't mentioned in the deletion notice. When you enter text into Wikipedia, there is a notcie that says the following
